What Constitutes Noise Pollution?

Understanding Noise Pollution in Residential Areas

Noise from neighbours is one of the most common sources of tension in UK communities. Whether it comes from loud music, late night gatherings, barking dogs, or building work, unwanted sound can affect your quality of life and wellbeing. But not all noise counts as pollution in a legal sense, and understanding the difference can help you work out how to respond.

In the UK, local councils have powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to deal with noise that amounts to a statutory nuisance. The Control of Pollution Act 1974 also applies in certain situations, particularly regarding construction site noise. Statutory nuisance generally means noise that unreasonably and substantially interferes with your use or enjoyment of your home. The law does not set specific decibel limits for residential noise. Instead, councils assess complaints based on factors such as the time of day, how often the noise occurs, how long it lasts, and the character of the area.

This means that what counts as a nuisance in a quiet village may differ from what applies in a busy urban street. Context matters, and councils will usually consider whether the noise is reasonable given the circumstances.

Common Sources of Neighbour Noise

Disputes between neighbours often arise from everyday activities that become a problem when they happen too often, too loudly, or at antisocial hours. Some of the most frequent complaints involve:

  • Loud music, televisions, or sound systems
  • Parties and gatherings, particularly late at night
  • Barking or howling dogs left unattended
  • DIY work, power tools, and garden machinery
  • Shouting, arguments, or raised voices
  • Banging doors, heavy footsteps in flats, or slamming
  • Vehicle noise such as engines running or car repairs
  • Commercial premises including pubs, restaurants, or shops with noisy equipment

Many of these activities are perfectly normal in moderation. A neighbour using a lawnmower on a Saturday afternoon is unlikely to amount to a nuisance, but the same mower running every evening for hours on end may well do. Frequency and timing play a large role in how complaints are assessed.

Some noise is harder to control. Crying babies, ordinary conversation, or children playing are usually considered part of everyday life. Councils will rarely take action over sounds that fall within normal domestic activity, even if they cause some annoyance.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

What You Can Do About Excessive Noise

If a neighbour's noise is affecting you, the first step is usually to speak to them directly. Many people genuinely do not realise how much sound travels through walls or floors, and a calm conversation can sometimes resolve the matter without any formal action. Choose a moment when neither of you is frustrated or tired.

If talking does not work, or if you feel unable to approach your neighbour, the next step is to contact your local council. Most councils have an environmental health team that handles noise complaints. They may ask you to keep a diary of when the noise occurs, how long it lasts, and how it affects you. This helps them assess whether the situation amounts to a statutory nuisance.

In some cases, the council may install noise monitoring equipment or send an officer to witness the problem firsthand. If they find the noise constitutes a nuisance, they can serve an abatement notice requiring the person responsible to stop or reduce it. Breaching such a notice is a criminal offence and can result in fines.

You can also submit a formal written complaint to your neighbour. Setting out your concerns in writing creates a record and may encourage them to take the matter seriously. Our free Noise Complaint Letter Builder can help you structure your letter if you are unsure where to start.

For noise occurring late at night or in the early hours, some councils operate out of hours noise services, though availability varies significantly between local authorities. You can check what services your council offers on their website or through GOV.UK.

Where noise comes from commercial premises or industrial activities affecting residential areas, councils have additional powers to investigate and enforce limits. The process is similar, but councils may apply different standards when assessing business related noise.

Preventing Problems Before They Start

If you are planning an event or activity that may cause more noise than usual, letting your neighbours know in advance can prevent complaints. Most people are more tolerant of a one off party or building work if they have been warned beforehand. A brief note mentioning the date, approximate times, and your contact details gives neighbours a chance to plan around it or raise concerns directly with you.

Think about the time of day when noise is most likely to disturb others. Early mornings and late evenings are particularly sensitive periods. Many council guidelines suggest avoiding noisy DIY or garden work before 8am or after 8pm on weekdays, and being more considerate at weekends. These are not strict legal limits, but following them shows awareness of your neighbours.

If you live in a flat or terraced house, sound insulation may be limited. Simple steps such as placing rugs on hard floors, positioning speakers away from shared walls, or closing windows during gatherings can all reduce how much noise reaches your neighbours.

Even when noise is outside your control, such as a barking dog when you are out, there are steps you can take. Training, dog walkers, or puzzle toys can help reduce anxiety related barking. If neighbours raise concerns, responding openly rather than defensively tends to lead to better outcomes for everyone.

Living close to others always involves some give and take. Not every noise will be avoidable, and not every annoyance will meet the legal threshold for action. But approaching these situations with patience and a willingness to communicate can often resolve disputes before they escalate. Where informal efforts fail, councils can intervene, and mediation services offered by many local authorities or community organisations can help neighbours reach agreement without formal enforcement action.

@yand This sounds really annyoing and frustrating for you as, after enjoying peace and quiet for so many years, you now have this. The noise levels you're recording are worth documenting, particularly the 72dB peaks, as this could be significant if you need to take things further.

While the school may not have needed planning permission for the garden itself, they still have obligations regarding noise and privacy. We would suggest you contact your local council's environmental health team about the noise issue, as they can investigate statutory nuisance complaints. For the privacy concerns, you might want to speak to a solicitor who specialises in property law (or us one of our tools on this site), as there may be options around screening or restricted usage times.

In the meantime, keep a diary of the noise with times, dates and decibel readings using the sound meter app which you can see on the header. This evidence could prove valuable.

we moved into our bungalow 10 years ago , and behind the bungalow has always been an unmanaged wooded area owned by the attached primary / junior school, 3 months ago they decided to build what they describe as a sensory garden ,but we think it is a childrens adventure playground, anyway since it had been completed we now have children running around ,screaming and shouting within 2ft of our garden ,this happens every day every playtime , the noise levels range from 72dbs max to 45dbs mins ,on top of that when the kids are playing on the equipment they have full view into my garden and house , it is now getting unbearable ,i contacted the local planning who insist it did not need planning ? because it was their land to do with as they please , any ideas where i stand legally

Noise and neighbours is a nightmare nationwide as communities and solidarity break down. Many have a complete disregard for anyone else and will not compromise leading to a breakdown in diplomacy and increasing a hostile battle mentality.

Police and councils don't want to know leading to tension and violence, only then acting as a result of consequence. We all know what the issues are, some people want and need quiet and cannot afford to move into the country. Nowhere near enough affordable detached homes are being built. People are just expected to put with nuisances with no avenue leading to resolution.

It is little wonder people lose it.

Hi to everyone my story is .. my husband purchased home next door near the pub ( sharing party wall ) it was back in 2007 . I personally moved in in 2018 , it always was a busy street with a pub next door and a pub in front of our house . It was more or less ok ( unless the pub kept on working with loud music till 3-4 am , then we approached the owner and pub was more or less cooperative but it was ok to live for us ) we always knew we need to move out , in 2021 was a fail attempt to sell the house ( the buyers pulled out and the house needed lots of repair ) the repair was done /house renovations and ect ) was almost ready to be on market but the interest rate gone up and things got thought . I have a bitt to our daughter in January 2023 and the existence near the pub with newborn became hard .. our priority was to sell and buy another house away from all the noise. My husband was a sole owner in the documents. Suddenly in May 2023 he passed away .. I’m still in the house and currently give through lots of legal paperwork and got letter of administration where I’m a legal beneficiary of the estate. Now the request in the Land registry was made and I wait for them to transfer property on my sole name and then my plan is to place it on market and sell . I was told it can take a few good morning… currently I can’t do anything or move out as I still pay all the bills here in the house and have now 1 year old daughter. To be a widow is a very tough time but the owner of the pub doesn’t seem to understand me or trubg to be considered. I explain I don’t plan to continue living here with small child but for meantime we need to do exist somehow .. he has DJ s parties on weekends and the music is so loud our party wall is shaking , the stuff is staying 1-2 or more hours after supposed to be close hours which is 12 am during week and 1 am during night . The owner is claiming he has lisence and they can play music and do whatever they want … needless to say that after they close the customers go out stand near pub/our house and talk / shout / smoke / wait for taxi and ect ,,I asked a few times ( called to the pub asked to tell customers who are outside to move away maybe from the house or not shot ) some stuff are good and understand/other stuff tell me it’s not their responsibility. Apart from the loud music shouting and sometimes staying beyond hours my problem when the pub stars closing it can take up to 1-1,30 hours after the time they are supposed to close .. so much noise of drugged furniture/slamming metal doors , fridges and ect are travelling through the party wall - only we somehow fall asleep it is a big bang .., my daughter is waking up multiple times and cries .. all our bedrooms /sitting room are sharing the party wall with the pub . Whenever room I go it’s all the same .. one level is their seller, another is bar then stair and top floor kitchen - for me whatever I try to hide with a child the noise is everywhere ( especially when shouting sn

I have an issue with my neighbour running very loud machinery from his shed on a daily basis, from around 8am to 5pm. Whilst I’m all for people running businesses from home, are they allowed to run such loud machinery? I have reported this to Environmental Health but all this done was make matters worse. I moved into my house 18 months ago and the bathroom and kitchen was in desperate need of renewal so I decided to start on the kitchen first. The builders were very good and tried to keep the noise to a minimum and finished promptly at 4pm, however when the electrician arrived to do his bit he found some dodge wiring and said he could leave it and would have to stay later to resolve the issue. Admittedly this went on until around 8pm and I should have told my neighbour the situation but he is very intimidating. Anyway, I had one very angry neighbour banging on my door telling me to keep the noise down, he the contacted Environmental Health and made a complaint. I have not embarked on the bathroom refit as I now he will hassle the builders and give me grief. All I need to now is there any legislation around running a noisy business from home? I know this all sounds a bit Tit for Tat but I would really like to relax in my garden this year.
Miserable Old Woman 18/03/2021 at 5:18 pm
We have lived in our house for years, brought our children up here and have been very happy. Last summer our then neighbour who we had lived next to for over 25 years moved to be nearer her grown up children. We were sad to see her go but welcomed the couple who bought her house. Like us, they were older but appeared pleasant. The problem is that the building works have been incessant. It never stops. My husband has a heart condition but has been working nights as a security guard. As I type this at 17.24 on a Thursday....the drilling and banging has started again after one short break since this morning. During the afternoon, the couple went out and left the dog indoors. It was beside itself. It howled and barked because it was left on its own and now at 17.30 p.m. the banging and noise continues. What is to be done?

I bought a plot of land on a security estate 3 years ago and built a house. It’s pretty idyllic, on a lake, peaceful, well kept. My house is across the road form an on site spa/gym and informal restaurant in a large teepee. All very casual and relaxed.

The developers are extending the development and in November moved a play area from the far side of the spa to 30 metres away from my home. Now, even in winter with our doors and windows closed, all we can hear all day long is persistent screaming from kids playing on swings, climbing frames etc which is all encouraged by loud shouting from parents. This is not occasional or restricted to certain times but all day and sometimes into the evening with torches and is having a significant impact on our ability to be in our home. All very overwhelming.

I spoke to the developer on one of the first days that the play area was open right next to the play area in with all the noise going on around and explained that the noise we could hear was what went through our house. The response was “you should have know about it when you bought’!

Any advice on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi , I have a noisy neighbour who constantly works a back shift , he has his tv or music on loud between 10am and approx 2pm then from 9pm -12 midnight . I am a nurse and because of working long 12-14 hour shifts I go to bed around 10.30pm . This neighbour moved in a couple of months ago and I’ve not said anything until this morning to him because I don’t like bad feelings, once I told him he was playing his music to loud last night this morning he said he didn’t realise , so I said could you please just turn it down a little . He didn’t say yes he would but said he didn’t realise . So tonight the tele is blaring out and I’m now waiting for the music to start ! He rents next door , this is a very quiet and respectable friendly neighbourhood, why do some people just carry on regardless , is it because they aren’t able to understand ?? Or are they someone who couldn’t care less ??

I firstly want to send my sympathy to everyone on here as it just so hard for everyone who has no peace in their homes! I have lived in my flat above a commercial property for years without issue. The lease has however been taken over by an estate agents and they have put in wooden floors. Does anyone know if they are able to do this? I have asked the building owner but no response as yet. I can hear the staff talking/laughing ,high heels on the floor and it is very distressing. I am sure it does not help that there are wooden floors as the sounds echo. Can I complain to the council as it is commercial?

I have an abusive neighbour, many crime references, reported to council, police over several years. Antisocial behaviour ongoing, neighbour has mental health issues and is elderly, they say can do anything to stop the behaviour, can't force her to take help or move. She often bangs on doors and shouts abuse in the early hours of the morning waking myself and another neighbour.

I have asked the Council about CCTV with sound to gain some evidential proof, (suggested by the police when I phoned them)

I live in a block of 4 flats I know there are law regarding CCTV for residential property but since this is Council owned property would there be anything that could prevent them from installing CCTV with sound. I think previously they told me its a privacy issue but would this apply in this case do you know? If they put up notices clearly saying premises were monitored by CCTV.

I thought it would be a deterrant.

The council have offered me a 2 week decibel sound recoding equipment, I would have to activate it myself by remote control, this would mean early morning disturbances may not be captured by the time equipment was activated. Also it would be used as statutory nuisance and wouldn't address the abuse itself.

Grateful for any advice.

for a few months now I am awakened every morning at 7 o'clock by my neighbour next door. What awakes me is the drawers opening and closing on what I can understand as being rollers. I awake yet the drawers keep opening and closing and there's more than five so as you can imagine I'm thinking how many garments. Going in or coming out. Was there a washing out . I concluded the washing wasn't out. This continues every day including weekends but at weekends the time changes to 6.30am. I figured this room was empty and no one was staying in it during lockdown so was my neighbour in looking in her nieces drawers?. Then as lockdown measures are relaxed the niece comes back to stay and this just continues opening and closing drawers like clockwork at the exact same time as her Nanna. My head can only conclude. What do you think?

You could contact the Ombudsman and tell them that your council are not dealing with your issue. However you do need to keep records of what is happening and use the council noise app. I fail to see why people think they can move in next door to other people and make their lives a misery. The lack of consideration is breath taking. You do not have to put up with any crap regardless of who it is or what they are doing. Get your evidence together, make your case and go for it. I am still recording my neighbour and sending it to the council. Thankfully, it has gone quieter. I think she knows I won't tolerate it any longer and I will do whatever it takes to get rid of her.

I brought a house in a what I thought was a quite neighbourhood. My house is a semi and on one side several garages from a neighbouring street backs on to the side of my garden. We have always had a problem with one particular neighbour who used his garage to store and fix large speakers and amplifiers and would test them occasionally which would cause windows and doors to vibrate. My immediate neighbour says he has been complaining to the council about it for years but nothing substantial has happened yet and the problem continues. Now that I work part-time and at home more often, I have experienced this problem more often as well as putting up with commercial vehicles, loading and unloading equipment and large groups of men outside and inside the garage working, when they leave the garage door open. I have complained to the council about the noise and use of the garage for commercial purpose on several occasions but so far they have done nothing about it, telling me I need to keep a log of the noise, dates and times for them to investigate and prosecute. I told them I have CCTV which records times when they gather outside the garage, but the council doesn't seem interested. The offending neighbours are also clever and schedule their activities at irregular times and dates to avoid detection by the authorities. Is there any other body I can complain to, as I feel the local council/officer is not taking the matter seriously.

I like music .. a lot. My neighbours ... don't. They very rarely go out either.

I now DJ in the kitchen after moving my speakers from the front room which shares their wall.

I also have a youngish family and and in bed by 9 most nights.

I only play music fri / sat / sun for a few hours in the afternoon always stopped by 7.

Yes its bass heavy music but I don't use my sub any more. If we are in the garden yes they will hear it but not overly loud. Is that not acceptable ?

We had an old neighbour who lived alone and was a huge problem. He would call the Police and say he could hear screaming in our home, tell them his wife was missing (she was dead). Anyway, long story short, turns out he had psychosis, fell down the stairs, and died. Out of 40 years, we had 1 of peace. He had been a problem all that time. The house sold to a rental landlord. Guess what? Problem family have moved in. They all have issues, the mother has 3 lads by 3 different dads. The middle son has ADHD and does drugs, the eldest just got out of prison and has just moved in. her druggie boyfriend (who the youngest kid belongs to) has moved in to. Her landlord doesn't give a hoot. They caused lots of problems for 2 years before she and I went to mediation arranged through the council. She walked out of the meeting and now clearly thinks she can do what she likes. I know its a horrible thing to say, but I hope she dies. I hate her so much she makes me physically sick. Her dogs bark and she just lets them. I'm glad I go to work but my poor husband has to stay home. I never thought I could hate someone so much, but I do, I really do.

I live in a flat and our neighbours just opposite our door blast their music from 12:00 until sometimes midnight. I have contacted the council and they are "investigating" the offense and it's been 3 weeks now. We cant even enjoy watching tv let alone read or just spend a quiet time with the Family. My wife works for the NHS and she is constantly having headaches and is feeling drained due to the lack of sleep. I really cant understand why people have to blast their music! I'm having high blood pressure issues now and desperate! It feels good to talk to other people in the same situation and hope everyone else find their light at the end of the tunnel. Keep safe.

I live next to a deaf old couple and every conversation is a shouting match. I am at the point now where I know way to much about there finances and grandkids coz we hear every word. And tv always full blast or Frank sanatra blasting in the garden. I work long days so it doesn't bother me I have some time of work to decorate my living room and they are constantly banging on the walls and windows. The noise from there house is constant and I never complain. They have even sent there relatives round to threaten me. Luckily it was my dad who answered the door I don't think its unreasonable to put a few screws in the wall mid week and mid day. I tried to apologise they say it's fine then there daughter is hanging over fences screaming after an hour.

I'm living in a council flat on the 3rd floor.
I have my neighbors exactly on top of my flat. I'm living with another 2 people (a couple)
So out story started by 3 years ago since they started to make the parties. We went upstairs few times at each time. Midnight or later 1am and more times. Asked them gently and nicely to turn down the music and stop dancing cos we can hear clearly everything. Nothing happened. Called council few times. They said we are coming coming hold on. 3 hours later they were still on the way so we had to give up.
In the last 2 years party time less. But now we have to deal with their kids. Running . Screaming . Crying in 24/7 . Moving things like such furnitures. Throwing things on the floor playing ball games and washing machine still working at midnight. And yes we called council again and Surprisedly nothing happened. Also these people coming from Africa. Kinda scared of them. . We don't know what we can do anymore. Thinking to call child protection agency. It's really the last thing what I would do but there is no one option who could help us. Council do nothing. Asked me to call them when it's noise happening. But they won't do anything if the noise before 11pm.
It's really impossible to accept that to find a new home cos some people don't know that how to show respect to another neighbors and how to raise their own child. If anybody know something help please let me know. I can give my email in private.

Also a couple of the neighbours have outside parties til half 4 in the morning with the music blasting. I’m not the only one in this area who feels like this, there are a few people around. Just wondering what the legal situation is on these

I live in a detached house, and never had any problems with noisy neighbours, until about a year ago the neighbours on one side have a barking dashund dog, barking as and when, and waking me outside my bedroom window. I am 71 and was so looking forward to my retirement.
I asked them could they keep the dog quieter...nothing, the council were involved....nothing.
Then out of the blue they started slamming shut their external doors shut. I asked them could they plane them down if they were weather warped, again nothing. They say they are trying, and it goes quieter for a while, but then starts up again. On top of this there is a builder down the road, working on many houses for the last year, insists on his radio blaring out. I have just paid out thousands of pounds to have secondary glazing fitted, but the noise is so loud it comes right though the walls.
I'm not anti social, and have loved my music all my life....but because of all this noise I now have to wear earplugs 24/7, no music ever, and am just a physical and mental mess, not living just existing. The council have told me there is nothing can be done.

I have been off work ill for nearly 5 months. I know my neighbour has reported me for noise. She has a machine she switches on at the slightest noise . One of my medications can keep me awake at night and i am now too scared to put my tv on which i have on volume 1 ( so it is quite quiet)
The trouble is the nieghbour sleeps downstairs in a room with a gas fire. She has had a man in her house since the beging of December 2018 and they sit talking or you can hear my neighbour getting irrate. In the middle of the night they have woke me up knocking on the wall between our ajoined houses . This morning around 5/6 o'clock my neighbours male friend chucked a can under my front window but i sat quite as i had all night just looking at fb. He then got hold of my flower basket under my front window and twanged it twice. I then heard my neighbour say is she a sleep. It was like they were trying to atagonise me into making noise or confronting them.
I work for the council myself taking these type of calls . I am being quite at night and i might drop the odd thing by accident. I dare not even put my kettle on for a drink and to be honest I am feeling rather intimidated.

Hi. My son plays the drums. He’s had a new kit for two weeks now. He plays for 15-20 mins 3 times a week. Never before 9am and never after 6.30 pm. My neighbours have reported us to the housing for constant banging of loud drums. We have been told by our housing we are in breach of out tenancy for anti social behaviour. Is this correct? We have silencer pads on the drums. They are not being play constantly at all. I do believe the neighbours record every time he plays. Are we being unreasonable at all?

Our back garden joins the backgardens of a long row of terraced houses. I cannot clearly see these gardens due to trees and high bushes, so I cannot 'pin down' which house is responsible. But, for a few years now, this particular house has incorporated chime bells and coconut shells that constantly ring and bash together. It was awful in the summer, but now the winter weather is upon us, it is AWFUL! It must be affecting dozens of other homes that surround it. As I don't know which house it is, I don't know what I can do. I don't feel I have the sort of relationship with my fellow immediate neighbours to 'join' forces' as it were, as people keep themselves to themselves around here. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Joe 23/11/2018 at 8:19 pm
Our neighbour is a DIY freak. At least once a month a new project takes place and I hear banging and sawing, drilling etc. Then in the evening they watch TV/movies/play music with a lot of bass.

I work nights. I feel so exhausted I'm actually considering quitting my job. But I have financial commitments that would really make people suffer.

I'm a light sleeper but I don't expect no noise at all. I'm perfectly fine with noise now and again, but the regular projects and loud bass at night/evening gives me no time to sleep.

They only sleep when it's time for me to go to work, which I'm often late for now due to lack of sleep and being incredibly tired. I also feel I'm developing health problems at least in part due to this issue.

They've lived in the house for almost 15 years, I don't know what he keeps working on. I believe he is a busy idiot but what can I do??? This is killing me and destroying my relationships.

We live in a retirement complex which we rent from a housing assoc. When we viewed the scheme we shown around designated seating areas. Our flat over looks the car park & grass. Since moving in some of the neighbours use the grass area for daily gatherings & not the designated seating areas as they dont want the noise of others using it. Its a block of 26 flats & 5 of the flats use the area outside our flat every day for up to 7 hrs a day. My husband suffered a stroke 3 mths ago & the noise affected him so much we had to leave our home for a day for him to get some peace. The landlord & the scheme manager are aware of whats gone on. Eventually all furniture was removed but the 5 flats have hagged the scheme manager repeatedly to have the furniture back. He caved in again & allowed it on Wednesday of this week. He put out furniture & went on leave. I had to go through the process of contacting the anti social behaviour team & our managers area manager to get it removed again. The asbo team dont understand why this is being allowed to go on as the retirement scheme as 2 designated seating areas & as said the grassed areas arent to be used. Now there is talk of a piece of garden area to the left of our flat being concreted to install furniture. We honestly cant go like this my husbands trying to tecover from a stroke & needs rest I'm at my wits end with worry & stress over my husbands health but also this furniture problem. I have emailed my mp & the ceo of the housing association as ghe scheme manager seems inadequate at saying no to these 5 sets of tenants causing so much stress. The police got involved as well due to a row that broke out between me ^ the residents, where one resident said my husband was playing it & swinging it, it being the stroke. Which sickens me. I could understand when we moved here if I had taken a flat facing or near designated seating areas but I didnt as I didnt want the noise. This as all happened since moving in. At times theres up to 8 residents with some of their family sitting outside as soon as suns out till after 7 at night. Constant chattering laughing calling to others to join in. We feel like moving but we havent the energy nor the health to move again. Any advice much appreciated

We have lived in our house for nearly 15 years and never had any problem with the neighbours.
In the last two months they have put a radio in the garden on a timer that starts at 0730 and ends at 2130 every day whether they are there or not and the noise level is 45 dba when measured at my back door.In the recent good weather we've had it has meant that we couldn't have our windows or doors open.

Is the window colour or anything related to appearance specified in the deeds? If not, there's not much you can do about that. The motorhome issue can be dealt with via the courts if it's a breach of covenant.
ellzee 02/07/2018 at 9:37 pm
Neighbours are just changing their oak faced upvc windows for white finish. All the other properties (cul de sac of 6 bungalows) have either rosewood or oak upvc. The properties were built in the mid 1980s all with wood finished windows. This is not in keeping with the rest and, quite honestly, looks awful.
He also has ignored the deed covenant by keeping a motor home in the front of the property.
Is there anything that can be done to keep the front of the property the same as the rest and get the motor home moved and who should I contact

Need Direction,
Since last year our neighbors( tenants) constantly making knocking noises.
No, it is not building work. Making ie, manufacturer the items.
Contact local Council, not much help, while they are in our house, not much to hear.
When noise comes, they say, itis not much to follow up. Need recording proofs.
Contact Local Police, notice the noise but could not get access to neighbours to sort out when they do come back, no noise, no follow up.
Contact Landlord denied accepting. They say, we have checked up, nothing there.
No tools, no pieces of equipment.

We are residence over 30 years, now as we getting older, our home should be relaxing place but opposite.

Thanks,

Wait to hear from all.

Why not talk to the council (environmental health). Tell them your neighbours are complaining about the noise and that you don't feel you are unreasonably noisy and would like some advice. They should be able to tell you about times when you can create most/least noise and may be willing to assess the noise levels of TV etc.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/05/2018 at 11:25 am
The council does not have to inform you if neighbours are about to start work. If planning permission is required, you may be consulted as a neighbour, but note that lots of work falls under the "permitted development" umbrella and does not need planning permission. If builders damage your property, talk to them and see if their insurance will cover it. If they refuse, you can use the legal system. Regarding working at a weekend /bank holiday, if this occurs often at unsociable times, contact your environmental health department.

We have lived in our house which we part rent part buy for almost 6 years it's a semidetached. Our neightbour in that period has complained about 6 times about the volume of our TV and music etc. We have always apologised and tried hard to keep the sound down. He says the walls are things and he can't hear his tv. This morning my partner put a film on early too early really anyway he hammered on the door told us how 8n considerate we were as he couldn't have a line on and was tired of the noise late at night and early morning and we should show consideration as we are now being monitored by the council. We have received nothing from the council but now we don't know what we can and can't do. We do usually put tv on before 7 but we are in bed before 10. Our dog is young and sometimes bark. Now I feel really confused and concerned. My partner lost his mum in Jan I lost 3 aunties and his dad us now in hospital. Being evicted 9snt what we want. Should we get a decibel metre any advise greatly given

I also failed to say the council, architect or the landlord failed to mention work was being done on the house next door. They thru a large bit of plastic on our lean too.....so we are not getting any light! I understand that people have to do things to improve their property but as we live in a terraced house their is no escape from the sounds. We might have to think about going away from Monday to Friday to escape the noise. As the next door neighbour we don't know our legal rights or what we can complain about as the law is so vague. I would have thought before work began that someone from the council before approving works determined how it effects neighbours. We are at number 5 and number 3 and 1 are both having extensive works being done. Also because we where told on the day works began it seems the landlord has a devil may care attitude! If there is damage caused by the builders, scaffolders etc where do we stand?????
Michael 28/05/2018 at 10:06 am
We have builders next door to us,we where not told building work is being done whatsoever,! Anyway they have started work this am on a bank holiday are they allowed to work on a bank holiday? If they are behind in work can they work Sunday. Woke at 7.55 am this morning. I am recovering from a brain tumour and the noise is upsetting to me.

My neighbours have started partying on a Saturday evening /night/early morning, it's 3.00 am and I can still here them singing in the house (with the patio door open) . My daughter works in retail and has to beup for 6.00 am to get to work. This is not the first time, last week was the same and last year I had to speak to their visitors about playing football in the garden at midnight. Am I being unreasonable? I have been ill (2 strokes, due to stress at work ) and need to get proper sleep (they are aware that I am a stroke survivor ) . Can I complain to environmental health and get support ?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 22/05/2018 at 2:20 pm
Talk to your landlord first of all...he/she may be willing to talk to the neighbours. To be honest the environmental health department will not take action in relation to children playing during the daytime. Your children should try and avoid hitting the fence with the ball of course. The best advice we can give is to simpy ignore it and to carry on as you are. Does your dog bark frequently? And do you stop it when it does?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 21/05/2018 at 3:30 pm
Talk to your local environmental health officer and see if they can tell you if this is within acceptable levels.

They came round the day after we moved to complain about the dog barking and have also complained that my sons playing football in the garden and the ball has hit the fence the kids won’t go out there now and have complained about cupboards banging there are five of us and we are not overly noisy I’m not sure where to go from here.

I live in the a 1980s build terraced house (ex local authority). At the beginning of April, new neighbours moved in, a family of 4, mum, 2 kids under 10 and a teenage girl. We had some issues with them having workmen round to do up the property before they moved in as they were working duing the night drilling, sawing and hammering and generally causing a disturbance. The first night this went on from about 10.30pm until 4.30am despite going round twice to ask them to stop. We decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and didn't complain to the council. However since they have moved in proper we are constantly bothered by the noise of their broken shower which they use almost all the time. We can hear a very loud, high pitched whining noise even over the TV and last night it was on from 8pm until 10pm which is very stressful. I realise they can shower whenever they like but I'm not sure I should be able tell when it is happening. We have spoken to her about this and she acknowledges there is a problem with it but seems reluctant to get the council involved. She did agree not to shoer after 10pm but that isn't always what happens. Please help as our health is beginning to suffer

My neighbour hates us for some reason but won’t say what it is. Ever time we play music they report us to our housing Association saying it’s disturbing them. If it’s inside it is disturbing and too loud and if it’s outside it’s too loud. Can I not play music? Is there a level? It’s always off by 8pm latest as we have small kids going to bed and we wouldn’t want to disrespect anyone. I live in terraced house so what can I do? She didn’t mind the music when we spoke but now gets mad.
Ladylylac 21/04/2018 at 8:52 am
Can someone please help me with something I was under the impression that i could play my music louder during the day as long as between 11pm and 7am it's not loud can someone help me with the actual details thanks for your help
ProblemNeighbours Editor 17/04/2018 at 11:47 am
You can complain to your local community policing authority about the cameras. They will be able to take a look at where they are focused and tell them to remove them if any are focused on your property. If the noise is frequent, excessive and often occurs late at night, it's worth having a word with your local environmental health officer. Regarding the drones, there are regulations that prohibit flying a drone with a camera/recording facility over or within 150 metres of any area substantially used for residential purposes
There's also an issue of trespass if a drone comes into the airspace of your property (a civil action can be taken if this is the case).

My neighbours have had a hate campaign against us for a bout 3 years now, we have been threatened, property damaged, we have 2 cars and park one on the drive but my Son parks on the road, they have a drive to the front and have 3 vehicles where they can park all outside their house, but one car always parks outside our house as close to our drive as possible as soon as my son has gone to work now the second car is out the front as soon as hes left, they also have now put up more cctv cameras, they now have 6 at the front of a semi and 5 at the back one now at the bottom of the garden near the boundary fence which appears to be looking into our garden and windows, they have previously had a drone going round our garden and looking in the windows, the parents went away over easter and their son played music as as loud as possible for 2 days the walls were shaking and they know we have a baby in the house we did knock on the door but as usual he didnt answer the door, weve tried talking to them but just get a mouthfull of abuse, I dread the summer as they have regular parties that go on till 4 am sometimes in the house where they bang on the walls and constantly shout, they have loud music in the garden then all their so called friends have to shout as they cant hear each other. My husband is retired and its getting us both down.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/04/2018 at 12:27 pm
Talk to your council housing officer about this. It's not fair that your children should have to tip toe around but nor is a 1 bedroomed flat suitable for someone with two children.
MoonRose 09/04/2018 at 5:22 pm
Hi, I live in a 1 bedroom council flat with 2 children, age 2 and 6 weeks.
We try to keep our children quiet where possible as we live above another person. But she will start banging on our door at the drop of a hat (or toy) if our child is playing in the middle of the day. Most recent example would be my eldest jumping up to greet me as I got home from work.
I understand that it must be a nuisance for her but there is only so much control we can maintain over a 2 year old and she is always in bed by 8:30pm.
We have never complained about her dog barking at 1am at our door, but I wouldn’t mind knowing if I should be worried about a fine for my 2 year old being a child? As we feel like we need to live on tip toes to avoid the harassment and arguments
Simi12 24/01/2018 at 6:12 pm
Hello,

I live below a couple with 2 small children, the children are permitted by their parents to play very loudly,to the extent that my flat is shaking,I had picture frames falling down my walls, the radiators are shaking, the whole flatis shaking under their feet,we tried sorting it out with the housing association who owns both properties, ours and my neighbours, but they declined to do anything because they are children.they even chose to ignore the crack in our living room ceiling blaming it on the building being old,Please, advise, because,we cannot live like this, the noise is already taking a toll on both my husband's and mine health, mostly my husband who is severely depressed and agoraphobic (he never leaves the flat),theyalso ignored the fact that the children are allowed to run freely in the communal area, how do we get through to our neighbours to understand that the level of noise coming from their children is unacceptable?Thank you.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 03/01/2018 at 11:37 am
Ask them again if they will revise the times the cleaner comes. Most hairdressers don't open until after 9am so there's no reason that 7am would not be feasible. If the noise is significant then you can refer it the environmental health.
Brand 30/12/2017 at 6:32 am
I live above a retail unit with my dog. One year ago hairdressers took over the premises below. Apart from Monday morning their Cleaner arrives at 5.30 am. Sometimes it has been 3 or 3.30 am. This wakes us both. She does two hours work andI during that time I either have to take the dog out, pacify her or leave her with friends . What are my rights? I did receive a letter saying they did not want to fall out with their neighbours BUT they do nothing about her times.

Hi my new neighbours moved in a year ago. We live in a cup-de-sac which has a restrictive covenent agreement. They have a double drive and have parked a caravan on it with a work van behind it. They also have another car. I know the restricitve agreement specified that no caravans were to be parked on the estate (also says work vans but I have no problem with that). The problem is that we are struggling to get our cars in and out. I have asked politely for them to be more considerate but that seems to have been ignored. What can I do now?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/11/2017 at 12:24 pm
The neighbour is the person you need to complain to. If the neighbour refuses to take action, then you might have to pursue this via the courts. You could say you are planning to get a professional company to tidy up your garden and then claim the costs back via the small claims court. This might prompt the neighbour and their builder to be more considerate.

hello,

My neighbour is doing construction works since few month. scaffolding everywhere. we get a lot of junk from the workers in our garden ( painting brush and even open paint bucket, and sanding papers gloves etc) we also get stones and dust.
we asked the neighbour to be more considerate but she doesn t care. who can we complain too?

Hi - our neighbours have a large garden mainly laid to lawn. They 'work from home and are semi-retired' so basically at home all the time. We both work full time Mon-Fri. Every weekend, particularly when we have nice weather the neighbours cut their grass for over two hours, sometimes longer, on a very noisy ride-on mower. Our garden is a lot smaller and they seem to ride up and down right behind our hedge for a while and it is very loud (we can still hear it at the other end of their garden). They then cut the grass when we get in from work for about another hour every couple of days. Our garden is quite private and they can't see our comings and goings unless they make a point of looking over fences or through hedges but it has got to the point that it is putting us on edge all the time and we can't sit in the garden in nice weather. We don't enjoy being in our garden, or sitting outside with visitors. We can even hear the mower when we are inside with doors and windows closed, which we have to do even in nice weather. We mentioned it to them nicely over a year ago but it didn't make any difference. Is grass cutting like this classed as noise pollution? Other neighbours can hear them and they get fed up with it but don't want to get involved. It's got to the point where we are thinking about moving but we really like it here so don't see why we have to have the expense and hassle of moving because of them, but why should they be allowed to make our lives a misery? One good thing is that we can't physically see them. Any advice about what we can do would be appreciated. However, one concern is that if we got authorities involved, we would have to declare this if we moved house. Thank you!

Hi, I live in Scotland in a city centre but still in a street with plenty of flats, above a pub that does karaoke on the weekends, which is already an issue in itself since the place in not soundproofed (is that even legal?). The clients of the pub go out on the pavement, just below my windows, to smoke cigarettes. There are always 2, 5, 8 people there, lingering for 10min, 20min, 1hour, and talking loudly, shouting, swearing, laughing, hollering. This happens every evening of the week and from 11am to 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays. This has been going on since I moved here so for 3 and a half years. I have been complaining to the council all this time, I still do every few weeks but all they say is that they cannot stop people from just smoking and talking in the street. I am at the end of my rope. I cannot enjoy my home. My life is just these people talking, talking, shouting. Even if I put the music or TV I can hear their conversations in detail and that's with the windows closed. I barely ever open them because then it is just nightmarish. I cannot stand it anymore. Is there nothing anyone can do to just make them stay inside this pub and not on the pavement? Is it really legal? I have never seen that anywhere. Would it be okay then if instead of below my flat windows I had a house in a residential area and they decided to congregate in front of my home? What is the difference? Just because it is a pub? And what if it was a restaurant or a nail salon, would people find acceptable to have people on the pavement in front of it, shouting for hours? Please advise. Thank you.

My neighbours decided to start playing music loud from about 7pm until about 11pm. My oartner asked them to turn it down beciase we could hear it in out house and also woke our baby up but they kept it going for about half hour after guvung us grief. They decided the next day to play it loud to the point you couldnt hear the tv even with doors and window shut from 8am til 4.30pm i spoke to their housing association about them and seny them evidence but now they are threatening to throw a massive party with djs from 6am til 8pm as well as other things. Where would we stand if they were to do it at that time.

hi
my neighbour is the lady with 3 kids and 2-3 more lady's spending all days with her all the time all what I can hear every day is they chatting chatting in the front garden all day and half the night when I asked them to move in doors or to the back garden as we are try to sleep they start to shout that this is they garden and they can chat there all night common how much You can listing and everyone know how much noise can made 3 people chatting at night they do not have to wake up in the morning to go to work (they do not work )but I do any idea what we can do
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/06/2017 at 11:55 am
If they turn it down when you ask, they are clearly receptive to your complaints, but maybe a little forgetful. If you don't want to keep asking them to reduce the noise, you next step is environmental health.
Tired 03/06/2017 at 2:01 pm
What about repetitive noise? My neighbour plays music for days sometimes weeks on end. Its not the loudest but I cant get away from the sound of it. I have to turn my tv up to hear it and their music keeps me awake at night. They play the same tunes over and over and over again. Its been going on since their adult kids moved in a few months ago. Previously it was the occaisonal blow out or argument that was very excessively noisy and unpleasant but not three days of continuous Pink Floyd darkside of the moon followed by a Beatles/country and western medley then maybe a day or so of quiet before it starts again. Can I do anything? They switch it down if I ask for a short time but as the day/night goes on the volume increases.

Hi, I've had noise issues with my local authority tenants upstairs in a block of flats since they moved in last August. Initially it was late night diy putting down laminate which has led to such bad noise issues.

There are 4 teenagers and their mother living there now and I get woken up but stomping and voices even with ear plugs in. Then there is the arguing and door slamming, but the worst part is the constant shouting and yelping of the boys when they play computer games or argue which I can hear across my flat.

I've complained to the council, they've even come round and heard the footfall issues and I have chased to find out what remedy was offered but not heard back for weeks. I've called environmental health officers to hear the noise who have also gone up to tell them it can be heard but still nothing changes.

I initially asked the mother and kids to be more considerate about noise and after being polite at first, they are just belligerent and rude. I really don't know what else I can do aside from complain about the council process and take legal action - are these my only options. I can hear them arguing now as if they are in my flat and it's making me miserable - any advice welcome!!

I have had problems with my neighbour for 10 years hoovering at midnight doing diy at midnight and the worst. Having her bedroom TV on loud until 3am. We have complained several times to the council who have issued her with a letter she's been quiet for a few weeks then starts again. I have tried talking to her but she get hysterical saying I'm being unreasonable. It's been on for 3 years now she has started again. For the last 3 nights her TV has been on until 2.30am. I've bs.ged on the way written to her. I. At my wits end
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/04/2017 at 2:06 pm
This would normally come from the complainant but it's worth giving them a call to find out what is the best thing to do.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/04/2017 at 2:05 pm
No you're not being unreasonable in your activities, but installing laminate was definitely a mistake which you should rectify if you can.
Concerned! 05/04/2017 at 7:45 pm
Also, can we contact the local authority to ask them to monitor the noise levels in his flat or does it have to come from him??
Concerned! 05/04/2017 at 7:36 pm
I live in a first floor flat that was converted by the freeholder after his family left home. It was converted in the 1980s and had no real soundproofing put in that we were aware of. Before we moved in, we discussed noise issues with him and he said he could hear some noise from the previous owners so he said if we installed sound proofing he would pay half. Obviously, having taken on a new mortgage we couldn't afford to do all the necessary work immediately but the bathroom really needed changing - on the day we moved in he got my son to slam the toilet seat so I could hear how loud it was. We obviously installed the best soundproofing during that work and he then refused to pay half, saying that he was only going to pay half if we had done the whole flat and then saying the bathroom wasn't the problem anyway!!! We have recently had the rest of the flat renovated and have laminate floor through the main living area and very thick carpet in the bedrooms - all with the best underlay we could get, all with soundproofing qualities. He is now bombarding us with emails/texts saying that the noise is worse than before and that we have to take all the flooring up and put better soundproofing in. We are a family of 3 and usually in bed by 10pm (sad I know!) although my husband is up at 5am for work - he claims he can hear us in the bedroom despite the added soundproofing underlay and extra thick carpet?? He called my husband down a few nights ago and got him to phone my son and tell him to walk/talk in different areas of the flat - he couldn't hear us talking in the kitchen (again, apparently much worse than before) and he couldn't hear us walking around the bedroom. He could hear foot steps on the laminate but we are planning to get rugs for this area which should lessen the footfall. He's still bombarding us with messages about the noise but we don't play loud music, we don't have any pets and despite having to get up to go to the toilet in the early hours of the morning (it's an age thing!!), we don't make any noise! Are we unreasonable because he is making us feel like problem neighbours??
Mooface456 16/02/2017 at 11:43 pm
At leaSt once a week my neighbours upstairs decide to play their music really loud at 11pm. The bass is so loud. We've asked thme to turn it down which they do but then 15 mins later they turn it up again. Is this worthy of a 101 call when it happens? It's a very regular occurrence.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 17/01/2017 at 2:00 pm
If the landlord won't take action, you should contact your local environmental health department to complain about the noise (they may take action for noise after 11pm or before 7pm)

I am attached to a Selwood house and the neighbours are extremely noise especially from 18:00 to midnight. I helped my neighbour when her husband was being abusive to her and even went to court to help her (he was banned from the house). Now the screaming, banging and incessant running has become excessive. She leaves the children on their own while she goes to the local shop (about 15 minutes walk away) and the eldest of the four children is about 9. I have passed all this onto Selwood but nothing has been done. This has been going on since November and I have sent in many logs about the noise and even had an interview with Selwood too. I am at the end of nerves now and not sleeping as the noise is terrible when I try to go to bed and then, even if I doze off they wake me or I lie there waiting for the next screaming match. The mother does not seem to intervene at all and the crying is awful. It is not just myself that has heard this, my family and my husband have been appauled at the level of noise I am putting up with. One Sunday evening my husband was woken up and he was sleeping in the bedroom at the other end of the house as he was up very early for working away./

So I live in between two of the noisiest inconsiderate idiots you've ever met. One Side have young children like my self. But they keep the. intentionally away until 2am, so that mum and dad get a lie in. They (mainly the mum) shout and scream and stomps about and slams the doors all night. And don't get me started on there TV volume. They're so loud I may as well be sat in there living room with them, honestly I know all there secrets and personal problems because they're just so loud. The when they eventually call it a night 3am joke. My over neighbours kick off, arguing, fighting dogs barking slamming about, the police are round at least 2 a week for them. I've complained about them both yet nothings being done, I can't afford to move out just now I'm in my first year of uni trying to keep mine and my 3yo daughters heads above water and get us a better life. But it's just so difficult when I don't even get an hours sleep most nights. I've just started taking sleeping medication. Something I really didn't want to do because I have a little one but it's the only way I can sleep through the noise levels and the lack of humanity in my neighbours.

Hi, I live in a flat and I think the neighbours above have taken up the carpets and I can hear everything from taps, light switches washing machine being turn turned on and off and they walk very loudly which keeps waking me and my housemates up during the night and before our alarms everyday. What can I do?
tweetybird 06/01/2017 at 4:31 pm
Is it legal? My neighbour runs a business. So they can have noises as many as they can. They use the kitchen with noises and turn on loud machines during the night. They turn on louder machines and louder kitchen noises during the day, but the council said these were not nuisance.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 05/01/2017 at 1:59 pm
Darcy is in a difficult position. As you can see from the other comments it can become very stressful having to listen to any type of excessive noise on a frequent basis. It can also be difficult to cope with a child who has learning difficulties. Perhaps the best approach would be to see if there are any other organisation who can help either with the neighbour and her child or with additional sound proofing. Your council or Citizens' Advice might know of anything in your area.
michbutts 04/01/2017 at 9:23 pm
Darcy, I am disgusted in your comments, a person with learning difficulties cannot just be told to shut up and stop shouting, his mother is probably at the end of her tether and upset and then to have you go round shouting!!! Grow up
Darcy 23/12/2016 at 5:07 pm
My next door neighbour is a woman with a 28 year old son with learning difficulties.
He screams, shouts and howls from 7am until well past 11pm every single day. The noise is so loud that I can hear it over my television. Most days I end up in tears because I just cannot cope with this incessant intrusion into my life. I knocked on the door and asked her if she would Please tell him to stop shouting, without a word she slammed the door in my face.
I contacted my local council but it appears that because he is disabled his quality of life is far more important than mine. Why does his disability give both him and his mother the rite to make other peoples lives a misery?

Thank you for your reply. Could you please tell me if there are other organizations who deal with neighbour noises? Because the council refused to investigate any further.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 08/12/2016 at 10:26 am
Not usually, unless you have an accurate noise monitoring/recording device and can demonstrate exact times of occurrence. A preferred option would be to contact your environmental health officer and ask them to install a noise monitoring device in your property for an agreed period of time. The EHO can then take action in their powers to serve an abatement notice or to subsequently take the matter to court.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/12/2016 at 12:09 pm
This is almost certainly something that the environmental health should be investigating, especially if it's causing a disturbance at night for your and your neighbours. Why have they said they won't investigate? They have an online form here or you can call them on 0151 233 3055. If they really can't or won't investigate (we feel they will if they know how bad this is) then you may have to take a private legal action via the courts.

Sleepless 05/12/2016 at 12:09 am
I have been told that my problem is something neither Liverpool City Council nor Merseyside police can not help me or my neighbours, her goes:
There is car owned by person staying a house in residential street where I live. His car alarm makes a loud percing BEEP every 2 minutes at all times when parked. The noise penitrates the double glazing and makes it impossible to have the windows open at night. This noise keeps me awake throughout the night and has began to make me feel ill.
My neighbours have asked me on my thoughts as they too can not sleep. I told them about my calls to the council and police.
I have spoken to owner of the car, he makes excuses and promises to get it fixed. This been happening since July it is now December. Any advice to stop the happening to us, greatly accepted.

Hi,

Our neighbors fight almost every 2-3 days and they always start at 12:00 midnight. Shouting swearing, throwing things and slamming doors are part of their routine which is now causing me a lot of stress. We have told them by our land lady and they still carry on.

Please what can i do about this as i can sleep at night and am getting panic attacks because of their horrific fights.

Hi I live in a private semi-detached dwelling. The adjoining neighbours son acquired a dartboard last Christmas. The Sound of darts hitting the board resonates throughout our home. The Son is at home most of the day. Usually starts 2pm and is on and off until well past midnight 7 days a week. Have written to them to no avail. Anyone any experience of how the courts will view this. We've had to vacate our 2no. adjoining first floor bedrooms in order to get some sleep in opposite side of the house. Have a extensive noise diary compiled and had a noise engineer come in and take measurement
ProblemNeighbours Editor 11/11/2016 at 10:52 am
Try and spend a week or two making notes of all the occasions when the birds are at their noisiest (start up time in the a.m and stop time at night etc). Environmental Health may take it more seriously if they see just how constant the noise is. They might agree to install a noise monitor.

My neighbour has an avairy with iver 50 birds and they are very noisy in summer its4.25am they start and dont stop until after 11pm, now its 10.30pm and 7.30am even at weekends, council gave said they have never dealt with this and will probably treat same as diy rules, althought people dont do diy 365 days but the birds do

Hi can I get some advice. We live in maissonette ground floor flat. We have 1.5 little one who makes some noise when she is playng or laughing but not all the time of course:) But never befor 8 am or after 9 pm, more during night hours we keep quite when little one is sleeping. And our first floor flat neighbour is moaning all the time to other neighbours actually about everything even she is saying that we use thumble dryier during night time ( which is not true as after night everything is off more I only use it in bad wheather) but on top of that she is shutting loudly doors in the morming in her flat, drilling something in her bedroom everyday for few minutes, knocking to her floor when our little one is playing, or even bumping on her staicase (made of wood) to make horribly noise. With the last one she made already some damage/ cracks on our ceiling paint so when I met her once I asked very politely if she could stop bumping as we have arleady some damage on our ceiling. So she started shout on me ( very badly with some racist comments) - not first time anyway. I used to ingnore her behaviour as I do not want to escalate the problem. But I feel it is too much now. I have spoken with couple of neighbours they are symphatising with us but this is not a solution. I do not want to be terrored by her in my own flat. Any advise what is the best path to deal with it to stop this sick situations. Many thanks in advance.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 01/11/2016 at 10:00 am
Not necessarily, if it's regular, excessive and is causing a nuisance it can be investigated.
tweetybird 01/11/2016 at 9:27 am
So during the day they can have noises as many and loud as they can?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 27/10/2016 at 12:53 pm
If any of these noises are at night and are particularly excessive, then your environmental health officer may be able to investigate.
tweety bird 26/10/2016 at 8:19 am
Thank you for your reply. I just want to know If these are nuisance:
They turn on the intake fan which is 3 metres away from our living room and bedroom from morning till night. They turn on the loud extractor fan for the whole day with lots of kitchen noises. They will use the kitchen when ever they like with noises. During the night they turn on loud laundry machines which are facing to our bedrooms.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 25/10/2016 at 11:58 am
If the environmental health department has refused to take action, that suggests there is no (legally defined) nusiance. If the night time noise is excessive, and you feel the council has not done enough to investigate it, you can apply to the local goverment ombudsman. If you want to take legal action directly against the neighbour, you should consult a solicitor first.
tweety bird 24/10/2016 at 10:47 am
My neighbour is four season care home. During the day and night they turn on their kitchen and laundry machines with kitchen noises which are facing to my garden and close to my bedroom. During the day we can not open our windows and patio door to enjoy the sunshine in the garden and let fresh air in. Even in the summer no matter how hot the weather is. Every day no matter what time they will use the kitchen with loud noises. These affected our sleep as well.
I reported to the council. They wouldn't admit these were nuisance and refused to investigate any further.
Who can help me what I should do next?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 11/10/2016 at 12:12 pm
Charging you £25 for something that has been sent on "hearsay" of another resident sounds very unethical. We suggest you take this letter to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau for some individual advice.
Louiseannabella 10/10/2016 at 10:47 am
Hi, I live in a block of flats with my 1 year old daughter and I myself have received a noise complaint letter from the estate agents where I'm being charged a £25 admin fee for receiving this letter. The letter is complaining of noise from my daughter I've been to the estate agents and they said the person who complained can hear her dragging thing across the floor (playing with her toys) within the noise restricted times 10pm-7am which I know isn't true as she's in bed the whole of them times. They've told the estate agents its perticually on a Sunday morning which is also another lie as my daughter stays at her dads on a Saturday night. To top this all off the people below who are the ones who made the complaint have now moved out they handed this complaint in the day they moved out so even if it was true my daughter is no longer bothering them as they don't live here. So my question is can someone who doesn't live in the flats make a false noise complaint against you? And do I have to pay this £25? I've been round to all the other people that live in the flat and no one else has heard her once not even the man that lives above us who's been off work for 5 weeks with a broken leg.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 05/10/2016 at 2:01 pm
Do you own the flat or do you have a landlord? If the latter, ask them what type of soundproofing is in place and if it's sufficient/appropriate for top-down adjoined flats. If your movements are normal walking around and you do not have laminate flooring, the chances are your neighbour is simply being extra sensitive. Your environmental health officer will be able to give you some advice on the sound proofing and tell you whether your apartment would indeed benefit from extra.
Jax 04/10/2016 at 9:52 am
we live in retirements.Flats. The lady below us complains that my husband makes so much noise that he wakes he up. He gets up at 4.30 as he has to leave at 6.30. But I am disabled and he has to get me up before he goes to work.
She knows what time he gets up take he dog out and comes back. Goes to work comes home. What time we go to bed during the week and what time at weekend
She now says that we should sound proof our flat.
As I suffer from a rare form of MS this stress is making my condition worse.

ProblemNeighbours Editor 27/09/2016 at 11:08 am
Could you try and have a polite word with the occupant? It may be that he doesn't realise the impact of the noise caused by the children. We're guessing they are put to bed at a reasonable hour so this should not be affecting your sleep. Your local environmental health department may be able to send a letter to this dad as a warning but in general they tend to consider "family noise" to be unworthy of action.

I live in a terrace house with flats beside me. The neighbour in the top flat gets his children at weekends and they are making our lives hell so much so we have got into bad health. Hi, I live in a detached rural location with approx 1 acre of garden and have been here for 10 years and have never once had a complaint/dispute with neighbours. On occasions during the summer months, we play music outside (ipod & docking station). So far this year, we've played it approx. 10 days over the entire summer, for periods varying between 1-3 hrs and never after around 6-7pm at the latest. We have no houses on our side of the road, but 5 bungalows opposite. Recently new people moved into one of the bungalows. Not long after they'd moved in, the man of the house came over kicking our gate and asking us to turn the effing music down, he was very aggressive and threatening. I explained that his behaviour did not really warrant any respectful response. A few days later I received a letter from the local council saying a complaint had been made about noise pollution, stating that the complainant had been asked to keep a log of noise nuisance for the next 28 days. I think we've had our music on twice during this period. Anyway, this afternoon we were playing music (about 5pm), they were outside mowing their lawn. The female of the house came across the road and stood by our fence with her mobile phone recording the music. We have a sound monitoring device, so we walked across the road to see what the sound/decibels were. When we just spoke to the device using a normal voice, it registered around 55-58. Across the road, the music was reading about 60-65 and their bungalow is set back about 20 metres from the roadside. When cars drove past it shot up to nearly 100. We are aware that the reason they moved was because they made several complaints about their disabled neighbour playing music too loud. Does this constitute noise pollution, as we now feel that we cannot enjoy our music in our own property and whether any action could be taken against us. Thanks

Hi
One of my neighbours go to work at 5am. He leaves in his truck parked down the road on a dead end road.
He reverses out of his parking spot every morning and it bleeps really loudly. It goes on for ten to 20 seconds. Sometimes more.
It wakes me and the bsby up.
I've written a letter asking him to reverse in to his spot at night so he doesn't have to wake us up. But he's ignoring me.
It disturbs our sleep. And also he puts cones out to "hold" his space everyday without council awareness.
What can i do. What should I do?
I've got single glazing windows and my landlady just won't change them either.
Thank you

ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/09/2016 at 2:29 pm
Excessive noise after 11pm may be considered a nuisance. If your housing association is unhelpful, your Council's environmental health officer will be able to offer you useful advice.
Emma J 05/09/2016 at 6:00 pm
Can someone help me. I've researched this so much online and still can't find an answer regarding whether my neighbours are actually technically causing nuisance noise or not.

My bedroom window is right next to my neighbour's council flat. She stays out in the garden til around 11:30pm at night talking, and her children also make noise in the house and leave the windows open. Even when I close my window I can still hear the noise and it's so hard to sleep! I have to wake up early but I often find myself waiting for her to go inside before I can fall asleep.

I've asked them if they can keep it down or go into the house earlier but they don't want to. My housing association said they're allowed to stay in the garden as late as they like, and they're not breaking any noise laws. Is this true??

I'm so confused because I thought legally you have to keep the noise down after a certain time. My housing association is completely useless and rude.

Can someone tell me what the laws are, and what I should do?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 23/08/2016 at 2:43 pm
Have a word with the neighbour's landlord first of all. It may be that the landlord can enforce some terms of their tenancy agreement. If that is unsuccessful, the council's environmental health department is your next port of call to complain about a noise nuisance.
Kydee 20/08/2016 at 8:25 pm
I live in a local authority property, which is in a block of dwellings. Upstairs however belongs to a private landlord. Since the person who owns the property moved out 2 years ago he's rented it out.I've never had problems until recently. Over the last few months, every day they play loud music with a deep booming base at any hour. It's that loud and booming it actually makes my mirror rattle on the wall. I know it's also upsetting the surrounding neighbours, which incidentally do not have adjoining property's, so you can imagine how bad it is in my home. I'm quite a laid back person, so for me to look for some guidance on this situation only goes to show how bad it is. As for the surrounding neighbours. Most of them are elderly or have some kind of disability and are afraid to approach them............I afraid if I approach them I will end up in trouble myself. I just need some sort of advice about our rights and a way to deal with the situation.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 03/08/2016 at 2:08 pm
Unfortunately, there is not a great deal you can do about this.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 02/08/2016 at 2:18 pm
No if the environmental health department does not consider it a noise nuisance, there is no a great deal you can do about this. Do the birds make a noise overnight or is this just a daytime thing?
Kayleigh 02/08/2016 at 11:57 am
I live in a semi rural area and my neighbour is running a chicken business. The chickens make a huge amount of noise and there is a cockerel crowing all times of the day even at 10 pm at night! I have asked her nicely to reduce the noise but to no avail. The council say although it is annoying they don't see it as a statutory nuisance. There is nothing in their deeds to say they can't run a business from their home. The noise is driving us mad even the police have been involved and they refuse to take action. We shout at the neighbour to shut the birds up and she rings the police and then we are told to stop harassing her. Im at my wits end!!! Anything I can do legally or otherwise! Any suggestions would be much appreciated...Thankyou!

Write to the planning department and give details of how your lives will be affected if permission goes ahead. Even if permission is granted, you may be able to suggest conditions that can be attached to the permission.

We live in a quiet rural village. One of the farmers has recently advertised his former hime as party house for hen dos etc sleeps 24; hot tub etc. Parking for 12 cars dog friendly etc The noise every weekend is a nightmare. We have sought help from our CC and they have given them 4 weeks to make a planning application for change of use.
What can we do to object to the change of use; which is resulting in very serious ill health for the person who lives nearest to them and will sell up rather than stay. This is our forever home which we have worked hard to secure; our peace and tranquiity is bieng ruined by this farmer - who is earning £2,500 each weekend. please help

You could try and take action against the management company for not enforcing the conditions of the leases? If your council wants you to keep a diary, then we suggest you do so, in order to help them decide whether it is actionable or not. They won't come and monitor the situation until you have done this.
J 17/07/2016 at 9:59 pm
I live in a large complex of apartments with the communal area in front of my living room. The resident kids (about 12 of them) literally scream, shout, skateboard, cycle, run, climb into my property, etc everyday. weekdays they do this from 4.00pm until 10.00pm, weekends they do this from 9.00am to 10.00pm non stop. Plus they leave their toys and bikes and skateboards and balls everywhere as constant trip hazards. The leasehold conditions clearly state comuunal areas are not be be used as playgrounds, and noise should be kept down, but the management company refuse to do anything to enforce the regulations. It is like living in the middle of a nightclub playground every second of the day I'm at home. Local authorities said they might do something but a journal has to be kept first and suffering has to continue! All they have to do is come and observe for a couple of hours and they'll have all the evidence they need, but they won't do that. I have decided to sell and move as soon as possible as no one will enforce the law effectively.

I have lived in my council property for 12years.i have a partner and 3 children we use to look at this house as our home and was even planning on buying the property through rights to buy scheme.its a small 3 bedroom terraced type of place. My partner and i work 63hours aweek so when we would come home from work,At about 5pm we would prepair the childrens evening meal and play our music,we wouldn't play it every night but maybe 3/4 times a week.it would be off by 7pm.Our next door neighbour called the noise team this resulted in a couple of warning letters that asked me to attend a meeting. But I couldn't attend these meetings as I cant get time off work and i thought if I kept my music off and keep telling the children to stop banging, dont shout it would dye down...How wrong could I be.25 th of may the noise team came to my property took all tvs all music systems and my childrens computers that they had for xmas.i wasn't given 24 hours notice like it stated on the letter. And my music wasn't blasting out to 11pm it was played from 5 till 7pm.The website states that loud music should be turned down by 11pm.But when I tried to explain this I was told that I should be more considerate to wards my neighbour.WOW I thought...These are the neighbours that I emailed the noise team about in janaury for breeding puppies illegally in their back yard selling the pups avoiding tax,The constant barking through the night..these are the neighbours who don't work who stay at home claming benefits smoking weed and having domestics. The noise team lady refused to believe that I had emailed her and took our stuff. So your website advice tells you to try and communicate and solve the problem by talking..so I tried to approach my neighbour which ended in abuse and then she calls the police and I get charged with harassment.so not good as I don't have a criminal record nor did I want one. This then leads to the council wanting to evict us,for anti social behavoir...but we cant go private rent as we tried and the council gave us a bad reference because of this aniti social behavoir.Well on the 23rd of june the time had come for us to pay the council £124.00 for our stuff back,And when I collected our tvs ect..I shown the noise lady the email I had sent in janaury and all she said was its not like the team to not get back in touch with you sorry.......so nobody botherd to contact me about noise from her next door and un like next door I have to go to work to pay my bills and bring my children up knowing I work hard to provide for them.so I don't have time to sit about writing dairies for the council to read. I think some people have nothing better to do than complain.YES we can here their dogs barking, yes we here them playing music, yes their children make noise, yes we have witnessed the domestics. But we took into account the walls are thin, and no we didn't moan we just got on with our lifes.Big mistake on our part because now we are looking at becoming homeless. We ca

hello. does anyone know what would be the best way in approaching housing association whose housing officer gives preferential treatment to tenants against tenancy agreement clauses who have been by many others reported for noise nuisance and antisocial behavior with the backing of housing manager. Also same housing officer lied about few things to me as tenant who is subjected to hate crime as being from another country living here for over 20 years by these antisocial neighbors. As result I find it impossible to trust the association or officer. I am finding police pointing finger at association, association at environmental, environmental back to association and when i try to get all three at the same time and same place they never all turn up. i feel i need three other people with me to meet them anyway as it is very unbalanced 3 against 1 situation let alone for them not turning up. how can i approach association who i have evidence treats me differently on grounds of race/nationality?

Hi
We have recently had some new neighbours move in next door it's the house joined on.
She has two children under the age of 6 I would say. It's only a small 3 bedroom house and thin walls, but her children scream constantly, through the night, early on a morning, throughout the day, it's non stop! We can't even have the windows open in the bedroom on a morning because they are screaming out side. In fact today the boy was screaming and crying for 1 hour solid this afternoon and crying for his mum. I mean I know children cry but its constant. One morning around 7 am they must of been running something along the radiator and banging of furniture. One evening at 12:30 just as we was going to bed she was hoovering and dragging the Hoover up the stairs, how do we stand with this?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 14/06/2016 at 12:16 pm
This does sound a little excessive. Does it really attract birds? Would birds not avoid somewhere that already contained nesting birds? How does the machine vary the call? In the real world birds have different calls for different occasions - for example parents announcing their return after finding food, warning the young to be quiet etc. The machine certainly sounds like a bit of a nosie nuisance. Check with your environmental health officer, they'll be able to tell you whether or not action can be taken.
Birdman 12/06/2016 at 3:29 pm
Our neighbours put up bird boxes last year for swifts. It seemed the resident chicks would screech non-stop for hours on end often well into the night. Not wanting to appear anti-conservationist we put up with it right through the summer.
This spring the noise started again and eventually I went round. I was planning to ask my neighbour to removethe boxes in autumn since we didn't want to evict nesting birds but could not tolerate the prospect of the noise again next year. However, when I spoke to my neighbour she revealed the noise is not chicks at all... It is a bird noise machine pumping out near constant noise of swift calls in order to attract birds into the boxes.
Our neighbour has agreed to only play the noise on workday mornings for the next two weeks but says she will switch it on again next year for six weeks over May and June.
I often work from home and my wife is home all day and we do resent the prospect of this being an annual six week disturbance to our lives. What our neighbour is proposing is literally a twenty second burst of screeching with a few seconds silence on a continuous loop that is being played directly into our back garden for four hours at a time every weekday for six weeks.
We don't feel we should have to put up with it. Can we obtain an order for the machine to be switched off permanently?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/06/2016 at 12:49 pm
You can report this to your environmental health officer as a noise nuisance. You might also be able to get the council or police to take action under Antisocial Behaviour Laws.

Hi there. I live in a terraced house for 6 maybe 7 years. One of my next door neighbour has parties and really load friends 2 or more times a week also on school nights. They are always more than 4 males so it sounds like they are shouting at each other and is always passed 23.00. My kids are being awake at least 3 times on that period and ask me what the "swearing " word they hear means! As they are also smocking weed in the back garden is like 3M away from their windows so I feel like a spion as I always shut the windows then open them back on when they go inside. Can anyone please advise me??? Help!!!
ProblemNeighbours Editor 08/06/2016 at 10:04 am
If they can hear it and it's causing a nuisance, then you should turn it down a little. The environmental health officer might be more inclined to investigate music playing at night, but if your music is interfering your neighbour's "enjoyment of their property", the EHO might pop round and have a listen/use a noise monitor to see whether there are grounds for action.

Hi when I finish work I like to chill out in my garden with the radio! My niegbours been round asking me to turn this down so at times I have now she's complain to council for loud music my radio is on its 75 decibels what's the law on this anyone????
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/06/2016 at 10:19 am
Check your deeds, are there any restricted covenants relating to running a business from the homes in your road? The planning department might be able to help you especially if there are any local conditions in place about use of residential properties for business purposes. If the parking is causing an obstruction, meaning you cannot exit your properties or an emergency vehicle cannot get through, you could try the police on non-emergency 101
Paddy 03/06/2016 at 2:11 pm
I live in a small residential cul-de-sac of 8 houses and a neighbour is advertising spa parties on the internet & Facebook 7 days a week from 9.30am to 9pm at her home. Vehicles of customers are arriving at all times and are parked in the road and are causing problems for myself and other householders with regard to our visitors and deliveries. The person running the parties employs a third party to assist and her car is also parked in the road. Is there. The address being used
only has parking for three vehicles and customers are not allowed to park there.
Is there anything that can be done to restrict the business activities and if so who does the complaint have to be made to and do a certain amount of people have to complain. Most neighbours have voiced the opinion of being unhappy at the situation.

I live in an end terraced house. I have two sons whohave both left home. One is at university and other in armed forces. My soldier comes home every second or third weekend at the moment, he comes home Friday, about half 6, listens to his music (I can still hear telly an his room is above living room) while getting ready to go out and is out by about half 8 - 9 pm. Sometimes his pal will come to house an they leave together. My neighbour has been calling the police an on their last visit at 8.45 pm on Friday they have said because they have been called out again the next time they get called they can arrest me. I told them about the intimidation I receive on a daily basis from my neighbour who is over 6ft tall an they said I have to report it. I've been reporting it for months an nothing has been done. There is a lot more to this story, too much to put on here. I am 45 year old female, living alone an he scares me. I'm now at my wits end an think it's unfair that my son can't come home an get ready to go out without next door shouting swearing an calling police. He used to wait until my boys had went back to army an uni on the Sunday then come to my door on the Monday an scream swear an shout at me but since I stopped answering door to him he now calls the police at anything I do including if I hoover when I come in from work at half 6. Cam someone tell me what is excessive noise an what isn't please? Also who can I ask for help I'm so upset by the whole thing an dread coming home from work, I don't want to live here anymore as he makes my life a misery.

Yes normally 9 or 10 at nite me and wife work shifts all I do now is play radio when it starts until it ends ,nothing els I can do thanks for reply
ProblemNeighbours Editor 16/05/2016 at 11:19 am
Does the noise of the children playing cease in the evenings? Eg after 9 or 10 pm? If so, then it's very unlikely you'll be able to take action.
Jeff 13/05/2016 at 10:07 am
I live in a detached house as the people next to me ,for three years about 10 children or more are constantly shouting and screaming on trampoline ,iv loged everything with council took recordings of loud shouting ,done everything correct and police have been involved .....they can't do nothing!! So all I can do is put a radio on and play music or a talk show in to muffle noise any advice on what time I can leave radio on without breaking the law? Also to give a bit of noise back to antisocial people,I've tried talking to them but its like talking to a potato thanks anyone?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 11/05/2016 at 10:00 am
Firstly ask them if they'll cut the grass a little later on Sundays. Many council advice that this kind of noise does not start up until 10am on a Sunday, so check your own council's information. If there had been an actual dispute/complaint, it should have been mentioned in your sellers information questionnaire, check with your solicitor to see what can be done (it will only be compensation and only if it can be proven that dispute occurred). There won't be much you can do about the daytime noise but your environmental health officer might be able to have a word with the neighbour or offer you some advice.

Hi me and my wife recently moved into our new home, the problem we have is the next door neighbour plays the guitar for 3 hours at a time sometimes more the time he plays is till 11 at night most nights 10 pm but does it quieter or so he thinks but we can still here him, I understand people learning to play guitar but is 11pm ok, or are we being unreasonable ??
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/05/2016 at 2:17 pm
The best thing to do would be to ask the neighbours for their opinion before planning the event. If it's a one off occasion and you agree to turn the music down at certain time and make adequate arrangements for traffic/collections and drop-offs it's a reasonable enough proposition.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/05/2016 at 1:49 pm
If you feel your council officers have acted unfairly or improperly, you could consider the Local Government Ombudsman or asking the EH department to do another "random" monitoring.

We moved to our new house 15 months ago . Our neighbours have two boys . At all hours they kick footballs at the dividing fence . Whack ice hockey pucks on the decking . You have never heard such noisy people . The father was out banging about and cutting his grass this morning at 9 on a sunday . My wife speaks to them but doesnt mention the noise and was told by the mother that the previous owners of our house had fell out with them over noise . When we purchased the house we was not told about this . Is there anything we can do about this ?

My daughter is about to turn 18 and we are struggling to find a venue to hold a party. We have a very large garden and are thinking about having a gazebo so she can have an outdoor party for around 30 of her friends. Obviously we will be around to supervise but the main problem I can see is the potential noise issue for the neighbours. My husband is not keen to have this party but I am thinking so long as we forewarn the neighbours and tell my daughter that the music has to stop at, say, midnight, there shouldn't be a problem with neighbours as it's a one-off. Is it unreasonable to hope the neighbours will be ok with this?
Gimpea 08/05/2016 at 1:21 am
A word of warning about EHO.
We've had an ongoing problem with noisy extraction, a total blight on our lives including affecting sleep as it gets left on all night at times.
We complained, we kept the diary etc etc and the EHO agreed to install sound monitoring equipment.
The recording picked up nothing, for the whole time it was in situ the extraction was never left on overnight and its general level was much lower than was usual.
We subsequently discovered that the EHO told the noisy neighbour (a business) that recording equipment was being used. The EHO justification was that 'it was in the interests of fairness' that the other party was informed of monitoring.
The equipment was removed and the noise went back to normal, overnight etc.
Some EHO automatically err on the side of businesses and we, the homeowners, have been treated like we are whingers.
Everybody who visits our home is horrified with what we have to live with. Sadly our council are simply not trustworthy and have, in fact, created a situation that has meant the problem has got worse as the offender thinks they can do what they like with impunity.
EHOs are not always the help they are supposed to be.

My neighbours havnt moved in yet they have people working in their house. Sub contractors I guess. They work hammer bang and still from 9am to 10pm or 11on some nights. Surely this isn't fair or allowed. Surely they shud stick to builders trading hrs of 9 to 5.

Could you speak to the council housing team and perhaps also your local councillor? They might be able to intervene and find her a property more quickly, or help her to facilitate a swap with an older person etc.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/04/2016 at 11:38 am
If they are in breach of their tenancy agreement, surely the landlord can take action to force them to put carpets.
Billbob 28/04/2016 at 7:48 pm
I think I have the opposite problem to most people here in that I am the noisy neighbour! Except I don't think I am... We occasionally play music and have been getting bangs on the will from the neighbours to say it's too loud. If the music was loud or if it is at an unreasonable hour then I would have no problem turning it down - it probably wouldn't be on in the first place. But the music played is at the same volume as we would have the tv and it has happened twice, once at around 2pm and once at around 6pm. I'm worried because they have threatened to complain to my landlord but I don't think we are being unreasonable. We can't hear the music upstairs in our own house and can barely hear it in the next room. I've tried to invite them in to show them the volume isn't that loud but they're not willing to discuss. Anyone know if there are any guidelines here?

I really need some good advice. I live in a middle flat. 5 months ago a young family moved in who I later learnt to be council tenants in dispute. They are only meant to be temporarily housed in the flat below. It's a young family with a two year old and a four year old that scream pretty much all of the time. I feel for the Mum who is stuck in doors with them all day as the flat is too small for her and her two kids who must be driving her up the wall. I've spoken to her and she is also going out of her mind and confesses the kids are driving her mad and is waiting for the council to move her and she says it can be any day. The screaming is getting to me. They were only meant to be here for 3 months and it's now edging towards the 6th. To add to this I'm meant to be recuperating from a stress related illness and have been forced to resign from my current job and am meant to be relaxing and having to stay at home listening to the screamers isn't working so it's forcing me out of the flat every day. I just don't know what to do. Advice would be much welcomed. All I hear all day and night is screaming, crying and her shouting.

I am living in a block of massionette and I own my flat there is a family living aboveme. It is a family and they have two young boys aged 3 and 5.The problem is that they have wooden floors and they are tenants and the noise created by these two tiny children daily is unbelievable and it is ruining me mentally and emotionally. The impact noise coming from them is the equivalent of a Heard of elephants running throughout the flat and I have tried to contact the council at least 3 times but they haven't even bothered to reply to me.
There is actually no sound insulation at all and this is the root to the problem. However the neighbours are in breach of their tenancy agreement by having wooden floors and I am at my wits end.

Most Monday's I get woken up by noisy runners and screeching girls using a hill I live on as a training grounds at 6am in the morning.ive contacted funky pumps the company and emailed them, contacted the council and even the police but no one seems to care that it wakes up the whole street.surely there must be some sort of time before they can start shouting and waking everyone up at 6am.if it was a barking dog I'm sure someone would step in.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 25/04/2016 at 10:31 am
Wanting her "out" or moved is an extreme and probably unfair answer to the problem. Could you speakw ith her politely about it? Maybe she is not aware that it's a problem for you. If the music goes on after 11pm you will have more chance of the environmental health services taking action. If the EHO thinks the problem is serious/a noise nuisance, then action will take the form of an abatement notice, not an eviction. These notices are usually sufficient to address the problem.

I have recently started a classic car project at my future mother-in-laws on a 7ft fenced driveway between houses. They bought this car for us (my girlfriend) 2 years ago and was used until it failed the M.O.T. on major bodywork two months ago, although i have only been able to spend five sessions on it thus far and then only for three hours at a time during 10am- 5pm. Initially it was hoping it was going to be a quick fix, but it requires a lot more cutting, grinding, drilling and banging then i thought. Before i even started, i approached the neighbour who is retired and very active Lady ( whom i have got along with in the past two years of her living there) informing her that i would be making some noise for a while and that it may take some time, she seemed ok with that. After two afternoon sessions of three hours i heard someone shouting me asking how much longer was i going to working that day as she likes to work in the garden in the afternoons, i packed up for the day. After some thought i went round and asked when it would be ok to work on the car, she replied in the mornings whilst she's out. Today (Saturday) was the third time... and started at 10.25am.......at 11.35am i was asked by the neighbour how much longer i would be, i replied i would finish at midday as agreed. She then asked how long the project would last, i said not for some time, to which i heard her door shut. I have the car with no rear wing or rear valance on it now and unsure where i stand on this matter as it is going to take more sessions than i thought due to the restrictions already. I would like some advice on this please.

Hi, I live in a complex of flats, there is a swimming pool (small less than 10m long) located say 50m away on the floor below. The opening times are from 7am till 9pm. The issue I'm having is a resident has started apparently doing sprint laps, apparently some 500, very other day! The result is a continual bass thump from the splash kicking which wakes me at around 7.15 and continues for an hour this happens on both weekdays and weekends. The management say that as the pool is open they cannot advise someone how to choose to swim! Any advise, with my work pattern I am getting exhausted by continually being woken by this...

I'm in a ground floor council flat and my upstairs neighbours bang and kids scream and run around crying falling off into things they do d.i.y after 8pm...its every night the noise except d.i.y
What can i do?
tway 13/04/2016 at 8:43 pm
i own my ground floor flat in a converted house. the upstairs owners have just let it to a couple and their two dogs. apart from the heavy footfall they take the dogs for a walk at 5am and again around midnight thundering down the stairs, through the communal hallway and slamming the front door (the lock is stiff) waking us up in the process. thankfully they are very nice (at the moment) and have said they will try to reduce the noise. in the meantime, do i have any legal right to request the landlord make improvements to soundproofing i.e. carpeting their stairs/floor boards/contributing to replacing the front door lock?

pumpkin1975 31/03/2016 at 10:14 pm
The boys next door are allowed to play in their back garden until 9.30-10 pm most nights during the holidays, slightly earlier in term time. They're in infant & first year juniors so not particularly old. We have a 1 year old who is constantly being woken up from the thud of their basketball & leather football plus loud voices carrying. What can we do? They aren't the most approachable.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 31/03/2016 at 12:56 pm
You could try asking your environmental health officer for advice, but it's unlikely that temporary building work will be actionable. They may be able to negotiate a break at the weekends.

Can I get evicted if my neighbour lies about me and gets other neighbours to lie about slamming doors
Tess010 29/03/2016 at 12:34 pm
I am a tenant, and my next door neighbours house is undergoing multiple extensions and renovations. I saw the planning proposal last summer, but was never contacted by the neighbours themselves, nor warned of the work starting back in mid February out told how long it would take. I'm a teacher, and desperately need the holidays for rest, recuperation and a significant amount of working from home, so I was upset when the work started without warning on the first day of my half term holiday. However, the scaffolders said that the scaffold would be up for four weeks, so I was reassured that at least my Easter holiday would be free of noise. However, I asked this morning and apparently it's due to go for another month, meaning that I will have had constant noise from 8am-6pm throughout both the half term and Easter holiday, as well as all Saturdays in between. I just can't be in the house with that going on all day, so I'm now having to look at hiring a holiday home somewhere for a few weeks, on top of the rent for a property I can't be in. Do I have any rights here at all? I clearly cannot enjoy the home I pay for - it's just far too stressful. I cried this morning when the noise started up again. My mental health is really suffering. But having to rent somewhere else will cost me an awful lot.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 24/03/2016 at 12:26 pm
No, not really - any noise issues that might be dealt with by EHO would be more likely to occur late at night (and thus not generally caused by children)
Jennyc83 22/03/2016 at 3:09 pm
I live in quite a built up residential estate and there is a small play park just outside my dining room all day during the holidays the children who go there are firstly, unattended, secondly, so loud I cannot get my baby asleep at all during the day. The kids howl, screech, yell, scream, make high pitched squeals and many other loud noises. What I'm interested to know is, are there any laws about noise pollution from a play park.? Thank you in advance.
NANA 13/03/2016 at 1:16 pm
Since i have lived at this property, six years, my neighbour every Saturday or Sunday or both drills and hammers. Think he is taking the plaster off the walls of the whole house. I can hear him swearing and shouting at his wife so i am afraid to approach them about the noise. I find i am getting headaches and i get terribly upset about it. I have recorded the noise on my mobile phone and my family can't believe how loud it is. I now feel that i have to put my house up for sale which is a shame. I am at a loss to know what else to do as according to the Department of the Enviroment it's ok for DIY during the day no matter how loud and detressing it is.
Nerdachu 11/03/2016 at 8:36 pm
My next door neighbour's son's bedroom is next to mine, and he has his friends over sometimes. He's consistently loud with his friends and usually at 4am, he's still being loud, laughing and yelling. It's every Friday now. I have insomnia, so I constantly wake up at night and struggle sleeping. He keeps me up and annoys me, so much that I can't sleep. We've complained to his mother several times, but he still does it. What do I do? Bearing in mind, he's 20, so he should know how to be polite by now.

We run a small tattoo studio at the top of a main shopping street which is one way to traffic. The next door neighbour has a really huge camper van which is permanently parked outside our studio. Although he lives just next door the whole of the main shopping street has parking restrictions which limit parking to one or two hour parking, but immediately outside my studio the parking restriction is lifted and there is unlimited parking. So of course my next door neighbour is doing nothing illegal in blocking off the front of my business. However, this means that my business is completely invisible to passing motorists and pedestrians, and even the light into the studio is affected. This really is one of those huge vans. We tried talking to him to explain that is affecting our livelihood and he was sympathetic but said there was nowhere else he could park it. Is there absolutely anything at all we can do?

My bedroom window is facing a popular grocery store back year. Every morning without fail their delivery guys arrive and move trolleys around the back yard making considerable noise and never failing to wake me. I don't mind some much during the week but every chance of a lie in at the weekend is gone. I appreciate deliveries need to be made and maybe they struggle with parking the truck later in the day but what are my rights here? Can I enforce that the weekend deliveries are carried out out later in the day or they implement some system to minimise the noise from movement of trolleys? I often hear their staff talking and shouting also. Thanks for your help!
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/02/2016 at 2:42 pm
Once you've spoken to them and that has not resolved things, follow the suggestions in the "who to contact" section of the above article.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/02/2016 at 9:56 am
You should report this to your environmental health department if it carries on. This is certainly actionable under noise/nuisance legislation.
Glos1995 26/02/2016 at 10:49 pm
My neighbours have been playing there music excessively loud most Saturday nights beyond 10pm and not everyone has weekends free, such as myself I have work in the morning and I cannot sleep. There is always shouting coming from the house most days and I'm worried to say something to them what can I do?
Jo 26/02/2016 at 4:05 am
My neighbour is drilling for the second night now it started at 3am and continues now it's just gone 4 am. I have a disabled daughter with a sleep disorder and don't get much sleep myself. This person has caused issues in the past and has been in trouble a few times now with the council. It is causing problems what can I do please I cannot approach this neighbour as he is known to be violent.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 24/02/2016 at 12:06 pm
Firstly speak to them politely and let them know that their music might be louder than they think. Secondly, even though it's during the daytime, the EHO might still take action if it is persistent and excessive.
j 23/02/2016 at 10:27 am
My neighbour who lives below in a flat contrinuously plays loud music thorughout the day although i am aware they can play music until 11pm to be played so loudly is unacceptable. Is there any advice you can give as to what we can do. We do not want to cause any further issues however it is not getting any better
Jack 21/02/2016 at 2:20 pm
In response to Maz:

If you are watching your TV or are talking so loudly that your neighbours are disturbed by it, then it is you who has to change. Particularly if it is late at night (I note your entry time being 10pm so you might prone to being night-active) as you are interfering with your neighbour's enjoyment of their property. The law applies to you as to everyone and if your behaviour affects your neighbours then it is you who has to change - certainly something as easily as a TV where you can turn the volume down or use headphones. As for the talking I am sure you can close windows and doors or take other precautions that will enable you to have your conversations without interfering with your neighbours.

Your response to me sounds more like that of a someone who is quite young, has had no real job or familial responsibility and only see his/her own interest and who declares anything not in line with his/her own interest 'irrational'. I suggest you grow up and see normal people live. Normal people are in bed by 10pm as they have jobs / children to attend to the next day.

Finally from your entry I would infer that you have likely come from a different country / culture. So, I suggest you learn what is acceptable in England and behave like local people rather than labelling them that they are irrational.

You should particularly take into account you neighbourhood: if it is terraced houses mainly lived in by families and working adults, then you have to behave like them. If it is flats inhabited by students, then obviously habits will be differently.
Maz 17/02/2016 at 10:07 pm
I just has read some comments about noise from TV s or loudly talking and as my advice I would say calm down people, because yours complaints are iracional. This simple say that there is not problem with neighbours but with you. Live and let live other.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 02/02/2016 at 10:52 am
If you're genuinely concerned that young children have been left alone without an adult, you should contact the police or social services. If the noise is excessive and consistently after 10pm you might be able to get the environmental health department to help.
Frustrated 31/01/2016 at 1:56 pm
I have a flat above me were the children sound like they are jumping on the floor and stomping around the noise can occur from 5pm till as late as midnight! I am concerned there are no parents there sometimes as they appear to run wild all day and night & I very seldom hear an adult intervening. I am kinda stuck about what to do and feel bad as it just children playing but it is starting to get very annoying!

My neighbour smokes grass, and the fumes are so bad that they pervade my house. I cannot sleep upstairs anymore and even smell it in my garden. It surely must be harming me. What can I do.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 04/01/2016 at 12:28 pm
The only really effective answer to this would be to talk to him about it directly. He may not realise that it's an inconvenience. You could ask if people could park on his drive while he's away if he doesn't want to park his own van there. Also check with the local council to see if there are any local bylaws or conditions prohibiting the parking of commercial vehicles oh the public highway.
Poppy 03/01/2016 at 6:04 pm
My neighbour has a white transit van which he uses for his business. He also has two cars, one of which is in the garage and one in the drive. He has marked a space in the road for his van and as we are all a pretty friendly lot we all try not to park in "his space". The problem arises when he goes away for such as the whole Christmas holiday. He takes one of the cars but instead of putting the van in the drive or in front of the garage he leaves it in the road. We live in a cul-de-sac and there are six other properties to consider but obviously he never gives it a thought. We know from past experience that he has a "short fuse" but would like to bring our feelings to his notice.
EL 31/12/2015 at 1:25 pm
We have a rented property next door. We did have a contact number for the Landlady - she has either changed her number or is ignoring our calls/text messages.
The noise is no longer from music but from noisy conversations, people arriving and leaving loudly and sitting in the garden to talk at 1am. Our Local Authority have told us they only help when the noise is coming from equipment. This seems contrary to the information on this website. Do we have grounds to challenge the LA to take some action? Is it possible to enforce Landlords to not re-let the property to students again?
Thank you!

My neighbours do this day and night. Slamming doors. Stomping as they don't seem how to walk properly. Gatherings in their kitchen which is right next to my bedroom upstairs. I approached him once before about it and he said it's because he has two young kids. But the way I see it is that just because you have kids, doesn't give you the right to bang doors, stomp about and whatever else all day everyday. Is there much I can do about this? It's been happening for many months now. I am on Disability for severe Anxiety and it is really causing me to have some real problems with health.

The neighbours are completely unaware of the noise that they make on pretty much a daily basis and in most from their TV that I can hear from half the house. This is usually around a 5db increase from when everything is quiet, approaching them is not in the equation as they won't listen. Is there anything that can be done in terms if the police to curb this?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 14/12/2015 at 12:51 pm
This is one of the issues with living above takeaway premises. You could try contacting your council about this, they may be able to advise on licensing and opening hours etc.
bleako 13/12/2015 at 6:13 pm
I live above a indian takeaway which is open 7days aweek normally from 5 till they shut at midnight some times I know this as that's the last time I hear the bang from the door laughing shouting and anything else they care to throw at me is there anything I can do,i do like to go to bed early sometimes but then get woken up from the noise.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 11/12/2015 at 12:48 pm
Usually DIY noise during the day does not consitute noise pollution but if this has been going on for some time, a few weeks for example, then you should first try talking to the neighbour, and if that does not resolve the situation raise a complaint to your environmental health officer.
z 10/12/2015 at 7:53 pm
My neighbour does diy till 9pm Monday through to Friday, it's extremely noisy...is he allowed to do this, are these within lawful hours?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/12/2015 at 10:19 am
Is it noisy/affecting you because of the noise? If this is regular and excessive, firstly ask them if they can put their dartboard somewhere else (where you might not hear it as much) and if they can keep the noise down. If that does not work, make a complaint to the environment health department at your local council.
Dave 09/12/2015 at 12:35 am
Our neighbour plays darts on a regular basis. He has been playing darts now from just after 10pm and is still doing it now at 00.30 what can we do ?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 08/12/2015 at 11:47 am
There may be little you can do about this, especially if you live in a rural area. Check to see whether there are any covenants or local conditions that prevent the keeping of chickens. You could also try contacting your environmental health officer who will be able to advise you about whether it's possible for them to take action or not.
fagashlil 07/12/2015 at 7:05 pm
My neighbour has chickens and a noisy cockerel that is screaming all day long. It starts at first light and I cannot take any more. I look after my father who has dementia and this constant noise is trying my patience. What can I do about it?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 07/12/2015 at 12:23 pm
The council is probably correct, this would not normally constitute noise pollution. Was the playground there when you purchased your property? If not, were you consulted when planning permission was sought?
Splash 05/12/2015 at 11:50 am
Ours is a particular problem. Our Parish Council has equipped a children's playground on the other side of our garden fence. At times the noise level generated by 20 or so screaming,, shouting and squealing children is unbearable, driving us to the brink of insanity. The Council's attitude amounts to 'Well, you'll just have to put up with it.' We claim that the noise, lasting sometimes from early till dusk, constitutes a denial of our human rights, i.e to live in peace in our own home. Advice would be welcome.
Tilts 19/11/2015 at 7:37 pm
We live in a 2 bed flat above neighbour where you have to climb stairs which are above his living room.

We had a few gripes from him about us going up the stairs but hey what can you really do about going downstairs to work and upstairs when home.

Recently he has stepped up his complaint due to squeaky board in kitchen floor but again does he suggest we float above the stairs and the floor??

We are not noisy people and are out for at least 10 hours a day working. We do stay up till about 12ish but most evenings sitting watching TV and making cups of tea etc.

Apart from that we go out a couple of saturdays per month and we may come home and speak for ten minutes or so before going to bed.

We recently raised issue with landlord and he may fix kitchen floor but since then we have a council complaint and a complaint via the owners of the whole site.

Mainly noise complaints to do with foot steps, dropping things (which puzzles us) and saturday night noise.

The concern is he will continue to complain.

More than willing to have noise levels measured to prove him wrong but can he really complain about a few minutes on a saturday night.

My last recollection is that when I had a noisy neighbour who had dogs and loud music we had to spend many months recording the noise and making notes of dates and times etc but nothing came of it.

What can happen to us if he keeps complaining how can we disprove him and show he is just obsessed with small insignificant very rare instances?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 13/11/2015 at 2:37 pm
Check with your local planning office - it's difficult if an industrial area is adjacent to a residential one, so you may find that there are some regulations or specific conditions in place.
Steve 12/11/2015 at 6:52 am
We live in a residential area with a small industrial estate beside us, one of the industrial units distributes frozen food to businesses and homes, this company regularly has deliveries from 5am onwards with refrigerator trucks with very noisy compressor units running at high noise levels whilst the truck is being unloaded approx 1 hour each time, my question is 'is there a time restriction for delivery vehicles in residential areas' ?

does anyone k now how i can trace where a ground source heat pump is in a neighbouring property. we have the vibration and noise 24/7 but worse in the winter. we can feel the pump when sitting down on chairs and under the bed and the compressor coming on and off. we are detached but assume it is coming from a garden which backs on to us and there is a run of about 20 houses - there are various outbuildings and sheds in most of these gardens which are long about 250 yards.

we have checked with the usual utilities and no pumps so assume it could be a gshp - not a ashp as we can see into the gardens and there are none.

any suggestions as to how we can trace this to the source and get it insulated would be helpful,

Hi, I have a problem neighbour. She is shouts at her 3 kids most evenings which i can clearly hear through the walls and anytime from 6.30 am her yappy little dog barks until someone gets up every morning. On top of this she randomly plays music at any time of day. last weekend she played music with the window open but it was very loud in my house. She then decided last Sunday eve at 10pm to play dance music for 20 mins really loudly and shouted at her kids to go to bed!
I phoned the out of hours service at the council but they said they would make a decision on how and what action to take if any. The Police and Council won't do anything about her. She is abusive to me and my family if she sees us in the garden or street.
please help!!

My neighbour has a cat rescue centre next door and has approximately 60 cats. She does not have a proper cage set up only a chicken wire cage about 10 ft high over a concrete area in her garden . Trouble is the smell as she has about 20 litter trays . She leaves the rubbish of cat litter and food pouches but her bin and obviously during the night foxes rip it up dragging it all around our garden. We have repeatedly asked her to deal with the smells and rubbish and have contacted the Enviromental health at our local council but it's still on going for about 5 years now and I'm at my wits end as the smell during the summer is over powering and we then cannot use our garden. Any ideas would be welcome

My son would like an outdoor party for Halloween but we have very unfriendly neighbours who are bound to complain. Is there any laws guiding us on what time parties are allowed until? Obviously by 11ish I would make them turn the music down very low but lots of 17/18 year olds have very deep voices which carry. We are planning to be in so there is no trouble but I just can't see the point in inviting people if they aw going to be turned away 10 minutes after it starts

I think you comments of carrying DIY work out at the weekends to be totally wrong !!!! The weeend is when after a hard week at work just want to relax and de-de stress and heres a web site advising to use the weekend - no wonder we are all stressed out!!!!!!

I really do not know who to contact about this. However there is a car that has been parked on the opposite side of the road from my house for about 3-4 months now. I do not think it is abandoned, but I have never seen anyone get in or out of it and it hasn't moved in this time. I am starting to think it is a SORN however it is parked on the street. It is stopping anyone from parking outside of my house and has done for the period that it has been out there, the time frame I gave could be longer I didn't notice it wasn't actually being moved until this time frame.
I have no clue who it belongs too because I have never seen anyone in it!
It is parked so no car can park behind or infront of it.
I mean it might be taxed but is there a way to find out because if it isnt I am going to get it moved, because it is getting ridiculous it is parked so at least 4 house cannot park outside there own homes (one of them might own the car). Others may not mind but I have people round and that have to park like 3-4 house down.
My area isnt the best so I cannot go knocking on doors in fear of retaliation.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 14/09/2015 at 2:26 pm
Your housing association should be taking more steps to help you with this difficult neighbour. As you'll see from our articles, the environmental health department can help with regards to the noise and nuisance issues with a variety of means such as a noise abatement notice or even an ASBO. These remedies are sometimes shortlived, and if your health problems are an issue, perhaps your housing association would be able to re-house you?
dee 14/09/2015 at 12:53 am
Im in a housing association house my neighbours too they are excessively noisey the have parties till 4/5 am they have a large American bulldog that barks at all hours of the day and early hours of the morning scaring me as it wakes and startles me at times that doesn't help my heart as I'm in chronic heart failure in the garden it will bark if I'm out at me and my small dog the parties are loud annoying go on for hours and no care or consideration for myself or my daughter. they also throw junk food garden lights broken items and their wine and bottles over the fence plus throw LARGE amounts of bottles into their glass bin this will be done at 2/3am most mornings it is killing me with stress putting up with it I was told by my housing officer they are gypsies they put 3 bins out on bin day placing bins in my garden which is disrespectful I've tried talking to them about it the laugh and shun me I'm a single parent and very ill what can I do to improve my living situation

I am renting a maisonette and the couple next door (they have a 6/7 yr old) keep noise from the time they wake up until they go to bed. There's a lot on banging, door slamming, and heavy thuds on the floor. I have already asked them to keep the noise down but they haven't. To drown it out when I'm at home in the evenings and weekends I have to turn up my TV really loud!

You could try contacting the council about this, but this is really one of the problems when shops/residential areas are attached.
undershop 01/09/2015 at 5:34 pm
my girlfriend has just moved into a student room where the house is behind, on top of and underneath a premier corner shop, and as her bedroom is directly underneath the shop we can constantly hear the door beep very loudly as it opens, a very loud constant radio and the obvious customers walking around- the shop is open from 6:30am to 10:30pm which means the entire day is filled with noise for her- is there anything we can do?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 19/08/2015 at 2:52 pm
Keep notes of all the occasions that this occurs and how long for. Give your environmental health officer a call and see if anything can be done.

Hi all,

Nursing my poor head again today. There is a person who has been walkkng this little Bichon Frise dog around 6 am each morning, thing is this person will shout at the dog full volume every time the dog stops or slows down.

There is always something to wake me as i live in a crowded residemtial area, I can often get back to sleep; However by the time this guy has finished walking his dog I am fully awake with no hope of returning to sleep.

I have recently moved into a house which sits in the middle of 2 others. I've moved from the city into the countryside to enjoy the peace and quiet. The neighbours on both sides are really polite. One of them has a Koi pond with a waterfall feature. I don't mind the sound of the water, however, they have a seperate pump blowing air into the pond. The pump is on 24/7 and makes a constant humming/buzzing noise. During the day it's not so bad as there are other noises - birds, aircraft etc. However, at night, the noise is very loud and irritating. I can hear it in my bedroom with the window open and shut. It's like having a fridge humming/buzzing outside the window! Anyway, I went round and asked them if they could dampen the noise of the air pump and they invited me into the garden to take a look. The pump sits in a little black box on a flimsy piece of sponge. I asked if they could just soundproof the box some more and they seemed fairly willing, though they did make to odd sarcastic comment. It's been 2 weeks now and they've not done anything about it. I should be able to enjoy my garden without the noise of this pump irritating me! Or am I unjustified? If it was me, I would have done everything I could to dampen the noise. One of them admitted it was loud, whilst the other one said he had his bedroom at the back and couldn't hear it at all! Should i get teh council to send a letter? Obviously they know who will have made the complaint now. Any advice?

We have had some new tenants moved in next to us and they are portugese. They are very loud during the day and at night after they get home from work around 10:30 pm, we have written them a polite letter asking for them to reduce the noise and the man in the house comes out very rude shouting in his native tongue and saying call the police. I have found out that the tenant agreement is for 2 adults and 1 child but there are 3 adults and 2 children in the house. They have also built a shed in the back garden against the fence but it is over a shared drain so if there was a blockage i can not lift the cover to sort it out. What can i do about this situation please......

We live in a ground floor council owned flat . Above us live a woman and her 1 adult child and another aged 7 . For 19 months now we have complained to our local authority regarding the banging on the laminate flooring . The flat is leasehold with tenants . We have diary sheets of the noise , had a dat machine fitted which showed daily noise but not enough for a statuary noise notice to be issued . We are lost where to go . We have contacted the leaseholders letting agent but still the noise continues .

im in a stressed mood over noise, my neighbour is building a motorbike and using power tools all day, i can hear it indoors but he even wears ear protectors , we have narrow gardens so i cant use my garden unless i wear ear protectors, not just that i have rabbits and im sure its not good for them either, i feel if you want a hobbie like that go rent in a appropriate place, not on a terraced street, i brought my house with garden to sit and relax in,
ProblemNeighbours Editor 02/06/2015 at 10:04 am
@liverbird08. Sounds like she's simply being intolerant. If the neighbour on the other side is not experiencing any problems with your noise then chances are that environmental health would not find sufficient evidence to take action anyway. At this stage the best advice is to ignore it. Tell your daughter to block her on Facebook and if she's starting to harass your daughter at work, she should mention it to her employer and perhaps to your local Police community support officer.
Liverbird08 29/05/2015 at 11:07 pm
We have lived in our house for nearly nine years and not had one complaint about noise from our house. 2 months ago we got new neighbours and all they do is complain, but not directly to me or my husband, but to my daughter who works in the local shop and to a couple of the neighbours. Apparently our dogs are constantly barking and that the TV was too loud, it was on an adjoining wall so We have since moved the TV to the opposite wall but it has always been on the adjourning wall. One of my dog does sometimes bark for about 1 or 2 minutes when we go out. The other is a nine month old puppy who doesn't bark very often. We all work shifts so there is someone in and out during the day and the dogs are not left for long on their own. Although the older one will bark if someone knocks on the door or posts something. I never leave them in the garden to bark which they don't do very often again only if someone they don't know is about ie possibly the new neighbours. I have spoken to my other immediate neighbour and she said she hardly ever hears the dog and even though the TV is now on her adjoining wall she can't hear it. Occasionally when the kids (I also have 9yr old and 6 yr old) are messing around with the TV they do turn it up but it is turned down immediately.
I used to like living here but now I feel really uncomfortable and are reluctant to let the kids play outside with the dogs like they normally do in the summer in case She sends more Facebook messages to my daughter on how 'P#€$ed off she is getting' what can I do?
abbiemidge 26/05/2015 at 11:23 am
I live next door to a student house and when they first moved in we were very friendly. A few months later and they started having parties on the weekends til 1am which was fine. Then shortly after this they began having parties on Mondays and Wednesdays (without fail those specific days) and it would go on until 5am. They would play loud music and guitar in seperate rooms and you could hear it throughout my house no matter where you went. You can also hear them when they go outside to smoke joints (which you can smell from a mile off). There are about 30-40 people at these parties at once.
We spoke to the neighbour and they were understanding in person, however they then continued (making the parties louder) and even shouting 'F*** off' at us while they parties were happening should they see us. The neighbours now won't even speak to us in order to resolve this issue, and it is happening twice in the weekdays, every week, without fail.

What can I do?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 11/05/2015 at 12:26 pm
@misspoppy. Unfortunately, there's not really anything you can do about this. If anyone is actually obstructing your driveway, preventing your from getting out, you can contact the police though.
misspoppy 05/05/2015 at 1:26 am
I live in the corner house in a cul-de-sac so the space of pavement to the road is quite narrow My neighbour on one side parks both her cars in front of her house and overlapping mine, on the other side My neighbour has a car parked in front of there house too. my 2 car neighbour does have a driveway but chooses to park horizontally across it and not to park the car or cars on the created parking on her garden space. My problem is any one coming to mine has no access really to park at all being on the bend anyway has always been difficult. My daughter who is about to have her second child, has to park some five houses away to get to mine and because when she comes she has traveled some distance and is staying for up to a week.this means the luggage and baby gear has to be carried some distance on nearly all occasions. I'm so fed up, as I'm not young and although still able, find it difficult traipsing such a distance.

The owner of the house next door died earlier this year and his neighbour was asked by the family to "clean" the house and "do it up enough to sell". It is already with Estate Agents and lots of people have been to view it. However, this next but one neighbour has been doing all kinds of drilling, banging and knocking, several times until 1.00am, then again at before 7.00am the following morning, today (Saturday) was 6.45am. I have asked him not to make that kind of noise so late and early, but he just laughs! I am going to ask for his wife's assistance as she is fed up with the time he spends working in other houses late! It is affecting our sleep, and as I suffer from blood pressure and headaches, it is having an adverse effect on both my husband's and my health. He has done this before, when this neighbour had a new kitchen and other home improvements, and he was hammering on concrete until after midnight. This neighbour did not work at the time but we did. Yet he still does the same! What can we do apart from the route of reporting it to the council and keeping a diary, which we have started to do?

I moved into my property last year, and after 3 days of moving in i had banging music through my walls. After 3 weeks of music every other day through the daytime my husband decided to go round to speak to them. The owner who is in his 60's,who plays the music.!! wouldn't answer the door and just turned it up louder. I rang the local council to which no one answered as it was a Saturday morning. I decided to go round. After persistant knocking he did answer the door. I explained we were the new neighbors, and would he turn the noise level down to which he did. He made it quite clear he did not want to speak to me...fine. The next day the same happened again. I couldn't believe it. The following week it happened again, and my husband was in bed after working a night shift. It was that loud my child couldn't hear the tv. Again i went round and knocked on the door. All i got was a load of abuse when he half opened the door. Shouting at me and threatening me. He wouldn't open the door properly. He just kept shouting and opening and slamming the door in my face. I reported him to my local council, and they sent a letter to him. The next few days i was out in my garden and he came out of his house and started on me. Shouting again and threatening me. I had a load more abuse of him. I did the stupid thing of arguing back with him,as i was furious. All he did was shout over me and not let me speak. I was enraged. I reported him again to the local council and they told me to report it to the police to which i did. I am now kicking myself as they asked me if they wanted them to go round to speak to the neighbor to which i said no,as i did not want any more trouble. Since then he is still playing his music, its been turned down a bit but its still banging through my walls. I have to put the tv on to try and drown out the noise. We are now having sound proofing put in to which is more money. Now i am having the problem as i think he is trying to intimidate me. You can tell he doesn't like women. Hes not married, probably never even had a girlfriend. He stares at me and laughs. He keeps watching me and shaking his head. Walks past my house, but waits till hes past then starts the comments. He only does this to me...never when my husband is there. This makes me feel very uneasy. I have now found out since from other neighbors he has fallen out with all the people that have lived both sides to him,and they have all moved for him and he has had mental health issues. He has lived there all his life and thinks he rules it. His house is an absolute mess. I feel so upset as i just can not settle. What can i do.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 08/04/2015 at 12:09 pm
@gampur. Most councils will not deal with DIY/Gardening noise, especially if is not unusually late at night or very early in the morning. If the noise is significant, frequent and of unnecessary duration, they may investigate though. Give your environmental health office a call.
Gampur 05/04/2015 at 1:15 pm
Does anyone know what the rules are regarding making noise during the day in gardens? I live in a semi-rural area and you can guarantee that if it's a nice day then my neighbour will be out using one of his array of power tools. Friday afternoon there was 2-3 hours of loud noise from a generator type thing. (I couldn't see what was making the noise and ther was no sign of him -sounded like he just left it running.) On Saturday afternoon there was at least 5 hours of him power washing - with a similar level of noise. He has a large garden and I accept that he needs to cut his grass etc, but he takes hours to do it at weekends and I can't enjoy my small amount of outdoor space. The noise can also be heard in the house at times as a low level constant hum. I've been putting up with it for a few years now but feeling stressed at the moment due to family Illness. He has shown himself previously to be an inconsiderate neighbour on other topics and I've avoided confronting him as I worry about making things worse.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 01/04/2015 at 12:54 pm
@noisystreet. Speak with your local community policing officer. The police have powers to act under Section 9 of the Antisocial Behaviour Act and Section 5 of the Public Order Act in cases like this. More information can be found here.
frodo 30/03/2015 at 5:02 pm
Basically everyone else has to suffer your child even if they choose not too but you can be damned sure if I was stood outside their window just staring in (as she AND her mother have been doing today) then I would probably be spoken to by the police!
Peace and quiet should be respected by everyone,I already have dangerously high blood pressure. How idiotic do you have to be to move into somewhere that's clearly not child friendly and then not be aware that you are the only ones who are making noise?
I hate how child obsessed this country has become.
Noisy street 29/03/2015 at 6:12 pm
Is there any action I can take against noisy drunk people on the street? The other night my street was full of people screening and hooting until 3 30am. They are not neighbours, although there are bars and a hotel on the street, so I'm not sure if it worth reporting to my council.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 01/04/2015 at 10:17 am
@Mosses. Although it's in the daytime and is not as much a noise nuisance as during the night, this kind of loud music can still constitute a nuisance/antisocial behaviour. Make notes of when the music is played, for how long and how loud (eg. state where you are and how far away the neighbour is etc). Then contact your environmental health officer they can act if they consider the music to be unacceptably loud. Bear in mind however, that while you like absolute silence, this is never entirely possible in a row of houses where other people may not have the same opinion.
Mosses 28/03/2015 at 7:52 pm
I live on a road where all houses are council, and I am fully aware of the laws for Housing Association i.e being neighbourly. Unfortunately one of my neighbours somehow think it's acceptable to play music, normally around 2pm to 7pm. I live in a absolute silent house, as I enjoy the peace and quite. She is fully aware that her music is very loud as I've informed her about this issue several times and we've even got into an argument over this. She stopped for a brief month or 2 but then gradually started playing music loud again. Now she is back to her normal routine.. about 4-5 times a week. The bass is really bothersome as it penetrates through our walls like a hot knife through butter! I've sent her a letter a few days ago and I got the impression she decided to stop, boy was I wrong! I'm really sick of it and it's psychologically affecting my stress levels. I haven't spoken to her mum yet and I'm 50/50 about whether she is aware of this but what do you think I should do from hereon?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 26/03/2015 at 1:53 pm
@frodo. Unfortunately there is not much you do about this - simply family noise and not late into the night.
frodo 24/03/2015 at 11:46 am
Where we lives comprises of studio flats, next door to us (owned by the same landlord) are mixed 1,2 and 3 beds.We have lived here for 12 years and have been lucky because it's so quiet. Our peace and quiet has been ruined now because the landlords have now decided it's appropriate to let one of the ground floor flats to a small family. The girl has been out in the garden next to ours early at the weekend and after school, she plays right outside our window screeching and shouting across the garden and staring in.There are no families that live here and to me seems completely and utterly stupid and inconsiderate to place a family right next door to studio flats.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 23/03/2015 at 2:27 pm
@ropper. Check your local bylaws. For noise abatement purposes, an environmental health dept will usually act on extremely loud/antisocial noise between 11pm and 7am. If you have children living next door to you, it would be courteous to stop work involving loud noise between 8 and 9pm.
Ropper 20/03/2015 at 6:35 am
I just moved in to a house and it's a wreck and I need to do some diy what is a reasonable time to stop
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/03/2015 at 10:06 am
@stapeler. Could you suggest that he wears wireless headphones to hear the TV? He may have trouble sleeping so tackle this with sensitivity. Your only other alternative would be to report it your EHO who would investigate and if necessary serve an abatement notice.
stapeler 05/03/2015 at 10:31 pm
just moved into a new house I am having problems with the next door neighbour he puts the tv on around 12.30am until 5 in the morning have told him that I cannot sleep he apologies and says he knows its loud because he is deaf and wears and aid, he promises not to have it up loud but just does it again I can tell what he is watching is there anything I can do driving me mad
bottleofpop 04/03/2015 at 11:32 am
regeneration.
what does that mean to you?
Here in the London borough of Brent
It is meant to signify something better.
But sadly what is said is always different from what Is made.
so we in Brent are Told that the council are planning to regenerate after decades of allowing people to live in rundown council housing.
the estate is knocked down and replaced by a much smaller estate run by a Housing association.
it looks good on the outside but when you move in and settle down you eventually realize that once again you have been mislead into believing that the council had noted your complaints and had used them in such a way that would ensure that the new estate would be better.
but no it turns out to be the same as the previous estate but on a smaller scale.
all the faults are the same.
1. poor sound insulation.
2. insect and rodent infestation.
3. the tenants turn the place into a nightmare
and you end up feeling even more depressed than you were in the former council estate.
its a unfunny joke.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 04/03/2015 at 2:46 pm
@sadkitty. You could try and negotiate something with your neighbours. Clearly they are aware of the noise if the music is turned down, but may don't appreciate how much it affects you. The EHO will also come and assess the noise levels if you ask.
sadkitty 01/03/2015 at 6:16 pm
My neighbours have parties every weekend and sometimes two days in a row. I have to school children (age 3 and 5). Neighbours lower their music at 22:00, but chatting loudly in garden or from till 5:00 or even 7:00. There is a baby girl living there under 1 and lots of strangers comes on their parties. Can I make concern to not allow them make parties so often and music be lowered by 20:00 on Sunday nights, when my kids need to sleep and next day go to school?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 27/02/2015 at 1:56 pm
@lee. Does the child ever sleep? If the noise continues through the night, surely they EHO could offer some help? Try your local councillor or MP for other suggestions.
lee 25/02/2015 at 10:33 am
I am being driven out of my flat by a toddler who is just allowed to run about at all hours of the day and night. I have spoken to the parents explaining that the sound insulation in the property is very poor. I've given up after 3 visits to request that they be more aware of the noise levels.

I know it's a young child and I don't expect absolute silence but, I now regularly spend the greater part of the week sleeping at other relatives homes. I have been advised that because it is a child, there's nothing the Council can do.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 13/02/2015 at 2:28 pm
@Jinstoke. We hope the council response was helpful?
JinStoke 12/02/2015 at 12:16 am
I live next door to some people who have a small child who is about a year old.
When they get up for work in the mornings between 5.30 and 7am I am been woken (with earplugs) by them shouting at thier child or banging. The first time I went around I was told the child was doing thier head in that much they were banging thier head on the doors - hence banging. I feel stupid ringing the council but after going round again today they just denied it. In the end I rung the council becasue its obviously not going to be resloved by doing the right thing, I even did the right thing and informed them I made the complaint.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 13/02/2015 at 11:58 am
@Shropo. Your first step is to speak to your environmental health department. They can monitor noise etc and establish if it is causing a 'nuisance'. They may be able to support your objection to the extended opening hours too. Are people really leaving their engines running while visiting the shop? That sounds unlikely - but if true it constitutes a pollution issue that the EHO might also be interested in.
Shropo 10/02/2015 at 8:29 pm
I live opposite a new store. The noise from this store, although not loud is disturbing. Vehicle engines are left running whilst people use the sore and this causes like a viabration in my house. The store has requested extended hours which will cause even further disturbances. The local council has obviously supported the store operator and site developer. What can I do to stop the noise. What action can I take against those that apporoved the development ?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 09/02/2015 at 12:47 pm
@Sarah. If you consider it a nuisance you should first try her landlord then the environmental health officer as detailed in the article.
Sarah 04/02/2015 at 8:17 pm
My next door neighbour has started her singing again and she has the full set up in her lounge our walls are very thin and I can't even hear my own telly when she starts she lives in a rented property and mine is owned by our selfs she is doing at a sideline to her job ..what's the law on running a business from a council owned property will she have to have all her walls sound proofed ?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 04/02/2015 at 1:50 pm
@beki. It might be worth having a word with him - perhaps suggest he uses headphones when he's playing late at night etc? IF that doesn't work, then get back in touch with the management company again....there may be terms and conditions to which he is not adhering. If that fails, call your environmental health officer, who has the power to act under the Environmental Protection Act.
Beki 01/02/2015 at 2:48 pm
My nebiour plays electric guitar below me. I live in a block of flats he lives on the ground floor and I live on the first floor. He plays that loud my floor vibrates and my neibours above me can here him. He plays everyday and doesn't really stop playing either really loud rock guitar or rock music from 3.45 till 11. When it gets to 11pm he turns it down but I can still here and it woke me at 2.45am the other morning. I have been living here three weeks in a flat I've brought and it's really effecting me mentally I suffer From mental health problems, depression and I also have borderline personality disorder. I am also a very anxious person and he is really affecting me. I am so in happy in my new home. I have contacting the managing company for the block and they have sent to letters out to him. If any thing he has got worse and has started revving his motor bike and then doesn't go out on it. I think he has started perpursly now. I have never reacted to him and have never approached him as he looks very unapproachable. I have been told by other neighbours in the block that he's running a guitar lesson business from the flat. What shall I do? I don't even want to be in my house.
BumbleBee 21/12/2014 at 7:44 pm
I have lived in my house for nearly 16 years. About 2 years ago my Neighbour told me he wants to buy part of my garden, half of it in fact. He has confessed to getting my property valued without my knowledge. He also gained information from the local council about change of access rights by claiming the property as his own. He told me to sell the the property to him for a third of the market value & if I sold to anyone else he would oppose any building works.
He owns a huge steam engine which he fires up most weekends. It sends thick brown smoke into my garden. I have to keep the windows closed & cannot hang out washing. I am worried about the health of my hens.
He & his friends work on the engine - they are loud & the language is terrible. When they are working on the engine they look down into my garden & will be out there all day. It makes sitting in the garden during the summer impossible.
He also uses a box to look into my garden, I have also caught him looking at me through my dining room window.
He comes onto my property to cut the his trees & never asks for permission.
He has shouted accusations over the fence because the council contacted him about the steam engine.
I have heard him literally screaming at his wife & grandmother on a few occasions.
Now he has befriended the people next door to him who's garden is at the bottom of mine. They also want to buy part of my garden. These neighbours have reported me to the council 3 times which have not been upheld but this has only happened after I moved the chicken coop into the part of the garden they want to buy.
I am a single woman, I live on my own & have always kept my self to myself. I find it all very distressing.
I spoke to the police a week ago about the problems. They told me to keep a log of everything, photos etc & said they are going to contact the council. I haven't heard anything since. I don't feel supported by either the police or council.
What else can I do?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 15/12/2014 at 12:47 pm
@Disgrunteld one. Why not try contacting your local environmental health department?
DisgruntledOne 14/12/2014 at 10:20 pm
I've tried ringing the non-emergency number for a neighbour that likes to play their music until 2:40am, but unfortunately the police couldn't do anything about it.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 02/12/2014 at 2:41 pm
@NorthEastScotland. Keep up the complaints to the council's environmental health officer regarding both the noise and the cats - if it's really bad, they should have enough evidence to act. Are these neighbours council tenants? If so, speak with the housing department, it may be that they can move them or assist in a swap with a single person looking for somewhere smaller or with no garden etc.
Northeastscotland 29/11/2014 at 10:27 am
....their cat sits on my window at about 10.30 at night crying to get in my house for up to an hour because they don't have a cat flap and my ground floor neighbours cat is territorial over the closey. now she's got a kitten too who scriffs across the floor all day even when she's out. Even them walking sounds like they are going to come through the roof!!
I can't have any guest stay because they wake up as miserable as me and a few times I've had to calm them down because they wanted to go up and scream at them to shut up!! what is it going to take for these councils to actually make the effort to fix the problems with flooring. like I said to the victim support woman " I feel like the only option is killing her which I wouldn't do or killing myself" to which she said "don't say that, that wouldn't make it better" which I answered "well it's the only way I'll ever get some peace".
I'm at a complete loss right now, I have no clue what's left that I can do. Does anyone have any advice to give me ??
northeastscotland 29/11/2014 at 10:16 am
Does anyone HAVE ANY ADVICE TO HELP ME ....I live in a ground floor 2 bed flat (owned)which was my gran and grandads home from when I was little(I'm 24 now)that I pretty much spent most my life in and have known the 4 other neighbours since I was born. My husband and I have lived here for nearly two years. we've never had any bother in all the time I've been alive until 5 months ago when the (what i can only describe as) "JEREMY KYLE SHOW NEIGHBOURS FROM HELL" moved in upstairs. I have never been this miserable in my life. They live above me in a council rented flat. I know I'm taking bad with it being a girl with a child and a man(I would say boyfriend but they seem to constantly break up) as it's only ever been an old man before on his own then an older woman who lived alone but I never even heard them speak. It doesn't help I work nightshift thur-Sunday morn either! I know there is NO insulation between the flooring and the actual floorboards squeak like crazy because I asked my neighbours if they knew, the flats were built in 1959 and have never been fixed up to a decent standard!! Out of the 6 Of us there are only two council flats left ( the two middle ones) the others are bought.
I've now got the ASBO team involved due to the noise. I know kids cry but this kid cries ALL THE TIME. every day this week I've been woken up at 2am till around 2.40 then 3.10-3.45 then 5am till about 5.30 n then 6.50 when they get up to wander round the house, play with toys and sing or even argue above my head until about 9-9.30am when they leave for "work" n then back home between 12-2pm to start the same nightmare all over again. Some times they sit and talk on the fone or yap and laugh n giggle or moan at each other until 1.30am. the child doesn't even go to bed till about 10-11pm n I think he's about 2. I think what is the main problem is that al she needs to do is take the kid and the cats through the living room and a lot of the problem wouldn't be so bad. When I say it's noisey, I mean to the stage where no matter how quiet they are I can hear ever conversation perfectly clear-word for word. I'm now on sleeping aids and anti depressants because I feel like if I don't take a pill to make me stop feeling I will lose it completely. I put a sign on my door every day I'm on nightshift so they know but it's like they make even more noise especially in the bedroom above me like they are trying to test my limit. The police have been called because a few times the fights got that bad I was more worried about the kid who was screaming his wee heart out. I've recorded everything I could, wrote down times and dates etc. I also have the out of hours service to phone at night but they didn't even get back in touch or phone back a few times. I'm at my whits end. I'm in a bought home that in all honesty.... Who the hell can I sell to if I can't even bare it here!! their cat sits on my window at about 10.30 at night crying to get in my house for u
ProblemNeighbours Editor 27/10/2014 at 12:02 pm
@doreen. If this is consistent (ie it has been going on for several weeks or months) and excessively loud...so much so that you consider it to be a real nuisance, then you should contact your local council. Follow the steps laid out above. Night hours - for the purposees of the Noise Act are 11pm to 7am.
doreen 24/10/2014 at 4:11 pm
I've lived happerly in my property for the past 22 years, but recently my neighbors having been playing there piano till about 10.45. I find this very upsetting coz me and my husband have to be up for work about 5.45. I became so frustrated last night that I had to go round and complain. I was wondering what are my legal rights of complaining regarding my neighbours playing there piano. What time legally are my neighbors aloud to use there piano. Please could you help me. I would be very greatful for any advice you could give me.

Many thanks Doreen

@roland. It's poor practice to park on pavements and in some parts of the country it is banned (eg. London).
roland 21/10/2014 at 10:28 pm
good evening.

at the place of work, the company on the opposite side of the road have installed poles with chains on the pavement up to the road to prevent us from utilizing the pavement in front of his property for us to park our cars. currently we park in the street and are obstructing and narrowing the road and the use there off for other road users. is such an act legal and is it allowed to have the pavement closed off.

the property is in Crucible Road , Heriotdale Johannesburg thanks Roland

10gingercats 07/10/2014 at 9:44 pm
I forgot to add in my previous post that you must report all bullying and aggressive behaviour to the police.Do not put up with it The police will intervene if not immediately.. Do not say to the offending party that you intend to do so
10gingercats 07/10/2014 at 9:37 pm
I have a long experience of various noise problems over many years..mostly DIY and antisocial music but also some gratuitus bad language in the same connections for no reason other than politely asking someone not to do something antisocial and they object to being told to adjust their behaviour...Rarely is it safe to approach groups of people in pubs and clubs in your neighbourhood who are causing a disturbance. You have to approach the Council and or police esp. where violent and antisocial behavious is concerned. My husband has been punched on the nose by a thuggy who objected to us 'complaining' about DIY late at night. Your own safety is important. Getting the names of other offended people will help to booster your case. In some areas Special Constables will intervene and they can often be contacted via 101 non emerg. policing..I am still struggling with noise from a Club and loud beat music but my local Lib. Dems are helping out as well as the police. Do get neighbour support if possible. It is very hard to stop noise but we have to keep on trying...do not give up!

I live in Branksome, Poole and was wondering if anyone else had noticed the late night banging noises?? Sounds metallic in nature, like someone is hammering on a bridge or sheet metal... I can very clearly hear it now, repeating every five to ten minutes. Not keeping me up just a very strange noise for this time of night. ( 2:00 am )
Thanks in advance for any comments.

She is constanly complain about every little thing. she is very nosy so me and my husband are working in the backyard and we are putting the music from 11 am - 4 pm she is complain that we are too loud. people come to visit me and park in the street and she comes out and tell our visitors they can park there for a long hours....also we have material in the front of the house since we are about to put in interlock in the backyard she is also complaining about it...can someone please advised what i should do with this noisy neighbour.
Steve 16/08/2014 at 1:25 pm
I live in a ground floor flat. The Neighbour above i've had to complain about because of Laminate flooring and small child noise but think i've gone as far as i can with that one without moving out.

The problem i have now and have had for a few years is the Neighbour in the house next door. I've had to complain about their dog being left in the garden for hours on end barking, got that sorted eventually by a letter being sent to them via the Housing Associating.

Now what i have from them every year during the Summer months is occasional parties. The worst (about 4 years go) went on until 3.45am! On top of this they are always in the back garden which is approximately 30ft from my Bedroom window. Because of this i have to shut the window and put earplugs in which i find wholly unacceptable. Most of the time the 'noisy' ones end about 1 - 2am which is still unacceptable in my mind. I don't mind if the noisy element finishes at say... 12 midnight, i can handle that at a weekend.

It just puts me on edge all the time wondering when it's going to stop, so even when there isn't a party, or after it's finished, i'm so wound up i still can't sleep. It's so bloody unfair!

On one occasion last year i actually called the Police for advice on their non-emergency number because it had been 2 days in a row ending at 2 - 2.30am. Initially they said it was an Environmental problem but to leave it with them to see what they could do. Well, i recon they contacted them because the next day she (the Neighbour) knocked on our doors and appologised about the noise... but then announced it was going on for the next 2 days because of 2 family celebrations! So that's 4 days in a row, starting on Thursday ending Sunday, all 'till around 2.30am! Why appologise when you're just going to do it again? To be fair to her she did say "you're welcome to come over for a drink" (which the Police probably advised her to say) but what about those of us that just want to get a decent nights sleep? I need my sleep because i suffer with anxiety and occasional depression which can be very draining at times.

This year i have kept a diary of when noise occurs, or parties. I've also managed to take a couple of small videos, one out of my Bedroom window last night funny enough at 12.15am to give an idea of the noise i have to put up with and the proximity to my Bedroom.

To be fair to them it isn't that often, but as i said to her, "every time you do this i lose a nights sleep".

Is there anything more i can do other than move?

As a footnote, i just don't get how these people can continue to do this without any concern for their Neighbours? Well, actually i do know... they don't care, they're just selfish!

The whole thing just makes me i'll, every year my Summer is ruined because of these people and their selfish attitudes!

I live in the middle floor of a purpose-built flat. The upstair flat has laminate flooring, and I can hear footsteps and conversations. For the last year, that flat has been rented by a family with three young children. They run, jump, chase, shout and drop things on the floor! Especially in the school holiday seasons, the flat was packed with guests and the noise often lasted well after midnight! I feel so stressed out. The property manager helped by contacting the landlord, but there was no improvement. I've contacted the council but what they told me was cases involving children were very difficult to deal with... I'm now waiting for this school holiday to end, so that their guests would leave. I'm feeling really negtive now, and I guess nothing gonna stop them unless they decide to move out some day...

I live I in a flat which is on the middle floor therefore neighbours below and above, double whammy! The chap in the flat above has laminate flooring and likes to work out. I hear when he is on the rowing machine, cross trainer and when he is weight training. This last one is the worst because when he puts down/drops the weights it makes me jump out of my skin, I sometimes think the weights are going to come through my daughter's bedroom ceiling. He usually starts this activity about 8.30 pm which is not too late but my daughter is usually in bed by this time as she is up very early for work in the morning. What can I do? It is making me feel ill.

my only problem is neighbours complaining of me playing the saxophone this is the third house ive moved to
i play in the shed, use a mute, and lock the shed doors and play in the afternoon for 2 hours every day
funny thing is that its always neighbours 3 houses away that complain
what can i do
Sally can Editor 08/07/2014 at 12:34 pm
@Sue. Many councils allow their tenants to childmind in their homes so it must discretionary. All childminders also have to be registered with their local council/early years departments too. You could try dropping her a note and asking if she would arrange for the parents to drop off at one particular spot and maybe walk down the road? If they're actually causing an obstruction then of course the police can help. Other than that there's not much you can do. She is providing a good service for working parents whilst keeping herself employed after all!
Sue 07/07/2014 at 4:09 pm
I have someone living 2 doors down from me and she looks after children as her job. I have nothing against the children but they are all VERY VERY noisy right from the morning right up until they get picked up which is usually after work hours.

The other problem is that because the parents of the children have to drop them off and collect them at certain times it is always stressful coming home and struggling to find a parking space outside our OWN home. They own about 3 or 4 cars themselves and take up SO much space and park really spaced apart. This makes it difficult for others to atleast get their cars parked too.

She's running her house from a council house and I don't know much about the law when it comes down to that sort of thing either to atleast complain. I don;t want to approach her because she is a VERY loud person herself.

Strumper - if your neighbour's shed is within two metres of your bounday fence it needs planning permission if it exceeds 2 metres in height.

Im in my sixtiex, disabled and often in bad pain. I live on a small estate with occasional bursts of loud music and swearing outside, but I can just about cope with that if it doesn't go on too long, although it makes me incredibly tense. But I HATE the summer because the youths, who don't even live on the estate are driving incredibly loud motor bikes with some kind of screeching adaptor on them around and around all weekend, every night and all day in school holidays. They only seem to stop to kick footballs on the estates perimeter walls. Tonight as I type it is still going on and has been since about 4pm. It is directly under my bedroom window and the constant bang bang bang reduces me to tears. They shout and use the foulest of language and it just goes on and on and on. They are an aggressive and feral group and everyone is too scared to approach them or be known as the person who told the police for fear of repercussions. However the police have been informed and have done absolutely nothing. They have come out a few times over fights and just seem to talk to them and then get away asap with no arrests. This isn't a massively busy area and im sure a few words from the police on a regular basis may make a difference, altho the youths who do it, all just laugh and joke and take the pee out of them when they have been called for other reasons. There is no controlling these boys and girls and anyone who tries has their equally foul parents to deal with. Why should decent people who just want to have a peaceful life have to endure these soul destroying scum who truly don't give a toss about anything or anyone. I am not being dramatic but truthful when I say I am so depressed and worn down with it I shall be more than happy to die as on top of all the other hardships disabled people face, noisy soul destroying noise night after night and weekends is more than I can bear. To all of you out there suffering the hell that is noisy selfish people I offer my deepest heartfelt sympathy. If you find a law that I can quote to the police please post it. Thanks for reading this,it helps to unload a bit!!

So sad reading many of these posts knowing that nothing will be done in 99.9% of them!
Go see your G.P and get tables to help you sleep or get anxiety pills or become an alcoholic and drink yourself to sleep because no one does anything to stop unsociable, ignorant, obnoxious pig heads in society making the rest of our lives miserable.
You could forget all the above and go to your m.p or write to him/her,but always keep a diary of noise and never give up pestering those who can do something (m.p,landlord,c.a.b).
From a long time sufferer, good luck!

I live in a tiny rural hamlet and I have the only noisy neighbours in the village. Ever since they came here we've their endured loud parties, their kids' louder parties, vehicles coming and going in the night, smoke from their chimney drifting into our house, weeds from their garden, which resembles a scrapyard. Polite remonstrations meet with verbal abuse. The council won't do anything because each incident has been classed as 'occasional nuisance'. No other neighbours have complained because on the surface, these people are all 'hail-fellow-well-met' types that everyone else is deceived by. Only one other person knew what they are really like because he lived on the other side. Unfortunately he's left the village.

Live in block of flats and there is a car alarm that Is constantly going off what can I do
Bobbie 17/05/2014 at 11:24 am
live in a council block in a very small cramped flat, I have a neighbour directly downstairs from me who has mental health problems and for 4 years made our lives hell by his ranting and raving, shouting and repeatedly swearing all of the hours of the day and night. As you can imagine, this is very upsetting and distressing. I have complained so many times and gave the estate officer doctors letters about this and went through the whole procedure, keeping noise diaries etc and have had the estate officer and his support worker round to his flat to talk to him. Finally after 4 years, (whereby my depression, anxiety and stress levels are now severe, as the damage has been done), my neighbour is a bit quieter. He still rants and raves and babbles to himself during the day and in the middle of the night, but it is not as bad as before.

Now I have a neighbour who lives underneath the ranting neighbour, who has recently been transferred to the flat on the ground floor from another part of the building. This neighbour has outside space, and he plays his radio for up to 15 hours a day, starting just after 6am. This is very noisy for us as he has the outside space with his door constantly open and in the nice weather I have to have my windows open in this airless, cramped flat or I will suffocate. The noise travels from his open door to my open window 2 floors above.
I put up with it for 3 months, and finally after being woken up at 6.15am with his loud radio noise, I went downstairs and very politely asked if he could turn the radio down, he looked at me with a look of hatred and his face had a nasty scowl on it, but he said he would and I said I would appreciate it.
Anyway, he did the turn the radio down, but it was still too noisy, and I had to close my window.
He is playing his radio as I write this and the level is back up again.. He acts like he lives in a detached house with his own land, and has no neighbours to be considerate of. I wear ear-plugs, I have been wearing them for years, and Also I have a fan to drown out the noise, but it is very expensive in electricity, and I can still hear his radio. The thing is I am now sensitised to noise, and have very bad nerves.
What can I do?
Rob 04/05/2014 at 4:02 am
I've been a noisy in my youth toneighbours to my shame, but I've had ten years of noisey neighbours and one thing I learn after living in Germany is flats in the UK are cheaply built
Emiliano 28/03/2014 at 5:48 pm
I live above a Chicken Cottage fast food and their ventilation system exaust is just at my bedroom window.
The noise is high, especially at night, till at least 3 a.m. and it doesn't allow me to rest properly.
The manager says that it's all legal, so he won't move a finger.
I contacted several times the Council also at night to demonstrate them the sound pollution I have in my bedroom.
But apparently they didn't do anything at all.
I was surprised when the guy from the Council told me, listening at the noise "Well, it is invasive, but it's constant so I guess you can sleep with it."
I was feeling offended, to be honest!
Also, when I asked for thei instruments in order to take mesurement he answered indicating his ears "These are my instruments".
And this is the seriousness of a British Council in London???
What do I have to do to let respect my rights to sleep in the night???
Please can you advice?

Moved into my new council property 6 months ago, met my neighbours when moving in they seemed nice enough, they are buying their home and are doing it up as it is in need of modernising, which is a good thing I know, they are drilling, bagging until silly hours , my partner went around at 11pm one night to let him no the noise was not allowing my 12 year old son to sleep and that he needs to get up for school, the guy next door responded by saying he couldn't stop as it needed to be finished, they also have a young baby that screams beyond control, we have been tempted to knock about this not to complain about the cries but to see if anyone is their as we don't hear them attending to their baby , what do you do in these situations as you can easily be looked on as interfering. Rebuilding your home and having a young baby is hard work for them that I totally understand but the stress they are under has them yelling, screaming at each other day and night. Was so happy when I got my home to move into but don't know what to expect next,
Its not just council tenants that cause problems , These people are buying their home and have no consideration for others , dread every day living next door with these people :(

In front of our house a fabricator shop is open. Every morning from 9am evening till 7 pm all through the day they are cutting, banging, drilling and just making so much noise. Doctor have advice her 2 take rest in afternoon, but due huge noise she is not able 2 take rest. Please guide us in these regard.

My friend cares for her elderly mother who is in poor health but there is a large family next door who keep making noise not music but screaming and shouting, also the kids are out of control I don't mean just being kids and having fun like kids should but shouting all day long in the summer meaning other neighbours cannot use their gardens because this is a big threatening family. Also lots of bad language when the woman has fall outs with the men she picks up.

Every 2 weeks my nxt door neighbours have a party tonight my daughter went round at 11pm to ask if they could keep the noise down as i had gone to bed with a migraine however they decided to get louder n louder so what do you do in this sitiuation when your neighbour dont seem to care
KJ 24/11/2013 at 10:14 am
Since we bought our house last December, our neighbour has got worse. First it was her kids breaking the fence between our gardens (she just let them do it), then they started throwing rubbish/toys/old shoes over it when it got mended. Her kids now sound like they are throwing themselves down the stairs and into walls at all hours of the day. The mother gets up, takes the kids to school, then from the minute she gets in till the minute she goes back out at about 3pm she plays drum and bass music so loud that the walls shake. She comes across as quite intimidating and neither my husband or I want to approach her really. I am a nurse, so my days off in the house are quite precious, and I would like to be able to relax and unwind. This is not possible at the moment. Her loud music has started on a Sunday morning now as well. I worry how her kids manage with that noise in the house!!! Is there anyway we can find out who she rents her house from as we don't think it's privately owned? We are hoping to have a baby soon, and it can't carry on if this happens!
Sarah 07/11/2013 at 5:06 pm
I can relate to most of the posts above. We are in a rented flat, highly over-priced, landlord keeps increasing the rent each year at the renewal of the agreement. Our flat is on ground floor, our bedroom located directly under the main staircase of the building. So everyone in the building keeps running up and down all day and night long. Not a pleasant feeling during night or really early morning.
When we moved here in 2011 it was difficult to adjust to the floorboards creaking and constant pounding/thumping noises but at least whoever the tenant was used to sleep at night. So we never lost sleep because of the noise, during the day we tried to ignore it. He threw parties in the middle of the week and people dancing on a badly insulated floor, no soundproofing at all. It was a nightmare at times, triggered migraine every once in a while.
Then he left, a new and improved nightmare came in his place, who has no job or no other activity except for pacing around in the flat till 3-4 am. Slept on a mattress above our heads for first year and a half, we could hear him snore, so imagine when he walks heavy on his heels, its like we are under attack. Bringing women and we have to listen to their muffled chatting and some other not so muffled sounds at 5 am on a Sunday.
In summer his family of 5 was living in a 1 bedroom flat. I was going out of my mind. The niece was jumping all over the place, and if we knocked to tell them to keep it down, they'll start banging the ceiling. It felt like its going to fall on our heads. Since we spoke to the guy calmly many times over, and he shouted at us each time. Kfh told us to contact the council.
I contacted the letting agent KFH, got no help whatsoever, we have never spoken to the landlord; all the dealings are through KFH (who are utterly useless for tenants, only loyal to the landlord). I was told to contact the council, which I did. They said since its not a council flat we can't help you with privately owned flat. I was told to keep a diary for a month (which no one even bothered to check) When the time came everyone just said we can't do anything, find another place to live. Is it that simple? to just pack up and leave? My husband works abroad and everyone's situation is not as simple to just quickly pack bags and find a new place because an insensitive idle middle-aged man is hopping around the flat till 4 am. And has no respect for anyone. He has shouted at me, even threatened me because he knows my husband is away and council wont say a thing to him. As a last try I spoke to the landlord/landlady of the flat above; they were even bigger bullies. Landlord came to put a new bed in because we complained about the embarrassing noises we have to listen, so very kindly he bought his tenant a bed. After the bed assembly he came down to bully me on his wife's behalf. As she had already done so previous week over the phone. Since then I have been told countless times to find a new place. A lot has happen

I note with much dismay that here are no solutions offered here!

Like Lottie I am literately being driven insane by the constant noise form upstairs.

Why is there no regard for people, for if there was there would be clear legislation!

Upstairs hoovers at 3am, she drags furniture around and when one is on 13 hours shifts day after day is utter torture.

My life is living hell and the lfat a doss house for there is no point doind anything to it for is not a home but a sound box.

I've just had a cry at my desk after listening to my neighbour's landlord's voicemail response to my last-ditch plea to curb their noise. We bought our 1st floor flat at the peak of the housing boom therefore we have no hope of selling it and clearing our mortgage, nor can we rent it out for the value of our re-payments. We're stuck. My elderly neighbour below passed away and the flat fell into her daughter's hands. They moved a young couple in this time last year and I've been suffering their three year old's relentless barrage since. Like someone above has experienced they let their child run riot all day and night, jumping into the walls (I kid you not as it was witnessed when we politely complained at their door one night), jumping off of furniture, banging their fists on the walls and doors (this again was confirmed as their way of 'playing' by the father on yet another complaint visit) and screaming their head off. Recently they had another baby, which doesn't cause us any grief actually, and made friends with another young couple living locally therefore the noise has escalated as we now have five adults shouting over the noise and two kids running riot every day. The landlord was kind enough to start with but now she's indignant and dismissive "if it's the noise of kids that's bothering you well I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do about that' - I wish I could in some way communicate the tone that comes with that quote.
The council told me they have no evidence of excessive noise so they can't do anything, like another poster here we are the only ones with any direct contact to their property (being directly above in a block of three and three) therefore I'm not surprised.
I'm at my wits end, my partner and I bicker constantly because we both feel helpless but somehow responsible. I don't see a way out. Any comments or advice would be much appreciated.
Laury 13/08/2013 at 8:46 am
We have had an ongoing dispute with our neighbour in the flat below for 15 months over their excessive noise. We have been working with the local council and the property management company to resolve the issue but have not been sucessfull.

We are now looking to sell and move. My question is legally what do we have to disclose to potential buyers about the dispute with our neighbour? And legally what comeback is there for us if we dont mention any dispute which the buyer later discovers? I know this may not be morally right but we have got to the point where we cant bear to stay in our flat anymore and need to leave.
Taexali 04/08/2013 at 8:08 pm
We live in a small village where on street parking is required. We do have a drive and can park off street. The neighbouring property is let out and the landlord advises that tenants can park on our drive. We have advised that this is not the case but frequently find tenants cars parked on our drive. Oe of the tenants actually sent my son to park in the street as he was in their way!

While perhaps we're being a bit mean in not allowing them to use our drive, we have to upkeep the surfaces and also are concerned that we may be setting a precedent and eventually lose our exclusive use of the driveway. This must be a bonus should we ever sell our property.

Anyone with experience of a similar problem - any advice appreciated.

Our neighbours are a nightmare with loud music from the stereo in the back garden and massive amounts of cars, people shrieking and kids running round the street. Its completely crazy for the full day. Starting early in the day and going on all evening. Sick of my life. I have asked before for the music to be lowered and she did. For a couple of days. Think her friends encourage her to be louder for me asking the noise to be lowered because its louder than ever now. What can I do about it. I will be phoning the police but what else can I do. Im also going to report her to thedwp for lliving with her boyfriend.

oth the dining room and lounge so it occludes light across the whole of the back area. Now my horrid neighbours have erected a wooden shed thing with a sloping roof to house the BBQ. It is 12 ft high and 14 feet wide. It touches my fence and occludes more light and is an eyesore. What can I do. They laugh when I mentioned it. Strumper

I live above someone who smokes weed at least 5 times a day and the smell fills my flat through open windows and the ceiling.
I get on ok with the guy and am scared to say anything to him as he is not from the uk and by the sounds of things also has anger management issues.
My kids stay with me now on occasion and constintly comment on the smell which puts me in a very difficult position.

All advice greatfully appreciated !

What happens if your local council grants a licence to an excessively loud concert group to hold a concert in a council park , surrounded on all sides by residential areas. And if the excessively loud noise is allowed to go on for twelve hours without let up, what then?

I stay at my girlfriends a lot, her new neighbours (renting) are from some arabic country, out in the back yard all day, and into most evenings shouting at eachother, they have recently added a stereo system to their backyard, which is played allday long, and most of the night. Not one of them speaks English, I have no idea why they are in the UK as none of the 7 living their have bothered to find a job, yet they do use the backyard as a breakers yard, smashing TV's, gas and electric fireplaces (asbestos), carparts, washing machines and fridges and anything else they can lay their hands on to pieces with hammers to pull out any metals they can scrap, it has gone beyond a joke, it took 2 months of asking repeatedly to get them to stop dumping their rubbish in the shared passageway we need to use to take our bins out, their bins are constantly too full for the binmen to take so they dump their smashed up electrical waste in everyone elses bin in the early hours when they think noone is looking, and they have started dumping any large waste at the end of the street, every day you see them taking car loads of junk into the house, even wooden furniture that just gets smashed to pieces and then ends up in everyone elses bin, not sure what to do anymore, they dont care about their neighbours, or the house they rent, or the environment, and cant have any education or they wouldnt be smashing asbestos with hammers. anybodies any ideas what we can do to stop this crazyness?

My new neighbour in the flat below started DIY the day he moved in, 3 months ago. I have no idea what hes doing in there but he may as well be putting new walls up for the amount of noise he makes. Every evening til about 7pm and weekends from 9am all through the day he is banging, drilling and just making so much noise. I have a 2 year old and it disturbs him greatly. I cant watch TV. I think he also smokes alot of weed as I smell it often drifting up the stairs into my flat. Im beginning to despise him. There is a small car park outside our block but he fills all the spaces with his vans and cars or his friends vehicles, meaning I have to park up the road. Im so sick of it but I dont know how to say anything to him?

My family moved into our new home 6 months ago, the neighbours seemed ok at first. The house was a bomb site so a fair bit of work has gone on. My neighbour is about 40 and has never worked so he seems to spend his day with an ear to the wall. If I hang a picture he will hammer his wall or turn his music up as loud as he can for an hour, we had a get together with friends last month which ended around 11pm in which the following morning he had his music on loud from 6am, fortunately we are up wwith the children by this time.I spoke with him about working hours and stuck by it but it seems he seems to have forgotten that and we cannot make a noise anytime without a reaction. no matter what I try to reason with him he is absolutely bonkers! any advice much appreciated

Some motor is faulty on their roof and is making a loud noise, like when you try to start a car and it just winds and moans. It has been going on since Wednesday and today is Saturday. I have lived at my property for 25 years and it is very quiet and rural which is the way I like it. Last July a neighbour along the road bought the land next to me and since then he has been running a large commercial digger in there almost every day. The noise of the engine is bad enough but he bangs the bucket on the digger at regular intervals which is unbearably loud. I am dreading the long summer nights as last summer he had the digger going until 10 and 11 o'clock at night. Is there a law against how long or how late he is allowed to use this digger? Both myself and my husband work from home and are finding it impossible to concentrate

(Continued from post below-)So am in the situation now that I don't know what to do about the noise. I don't really want to have to resort to moving. Has anyone else had any luck with noise patrol or getting any independant witnesses for noise? thanks Sleepy (the nickname was originally I'm not turning into Victor meldrew-im just tired but it was too long)

I moved into a small council block which is 4 double studios in NW3 area, moving is not an option till May as I have to live there for a year before I can go on homeswapper or move. it's a lovely place and is a great location for transport, shops etc.pity such a nice place gets spoiled by one person-the guy downstairs is a total tool. Every so often he puts on some kind of recording after 11pm at night & it goes on sometimes till 5am, anyway I rang Camden noise patrol on Thursday night, before they arrived I thought I'd open the intercom door so that they would clearly hear it on arrival and even told them to park down the road so guy downstairs would not see the car arriving (yes can hear it loud and clear in communal hallway too) what happened? 2 minutes before they arrived, he turned it off! typical!!! Noise patrol said that happened all the time? (do they ever catch anyone making noise then?) Well the noise was very bad early hours of this morning-1.25 was woken up by his noise again, so rang noise patrol again, this time the guy said 'we are very busy' WHAT early hours of Monday morning? bullcrap.more a case of lazyitus! The estate manager says she can't do nothing unless I have an independant witness such as noise patrol and that if she goes round to see him without that,(good luck, he never answers the door) and says there has been a complaint from the neighbour above, it could be my word against his about how loud it is? meaning he could deny having it loud.
Lottie 04/01/2013 at 12:41 pm
I can really sympathise with the people on here. I lived in a ground floor flat and am being driven insane by the woman upstairs who has every TV on so loud I can hear what she is watching. I can hear it in every room of my flat and can no longer watch my TV, listen to music or read a book. I can't even have a bath in peace! I have spoken to the woman very very nicely, who turned it down for 2 nights, but then she put it back to its usual volume. Luckily I am renting so I think the only solution is to move. I told my landlady I was suffering and she said "turn your TV up really loud". Great one! Apart from the fact that I don't want to damage my hearing, it's not fair on the man who lives next door to me. I have complained again and my landlady said she would speak to her landlord...nothing had changed. This has been going on for 5 months now and I am becoming really miserable, angry and stressed. I can't ever relax and I have a demanding job and need some time each day to unwind. just can't get over how selfish some people are. I would be mortified if I knew I was disturbing someone.

I moved into my house 10 years ago - next to a copper, his wife and 3 girls. They were quiet for the first month until I had work done - then they started with their noise, banging doors, etc. I then had a gas fire fitted - 1 hours work, copper came round complaining so I got annoyed after that about their noise. He came round threatening me with court. Since then they've got a dog which barks a lot and now there is a 18 mnth old grandchild which comes frequently, it isn't the child that makes all the noise, it is the 14 yr old, there is banging on the floor so hard it makes things rattle in my house. I think it is disgusting that he is a copper - I've no chance of fighting them have I.

We moved in to our new house oct 2012 its on a colisack when we moved most of the neighbours were really nice even sent us cards. About 6months after moving in we started maintance work (there was alot that needed doing) We have neighbours on both sides.
We admitted we worked for about aweeks till very late about half 10 when the elderly lady came round to complain we were very sorry as we didn't realise she was quit aggressive but we completely understood we even went round with apple pie to say sorry and agreed we would't work any time after 7pm(We have kept to our word). We thought the matter was sorted but since then she has been very nasty spreading unpleasant comments to other neighbours be more annoyingly everytime we do any kind of DIY weather it be banging drilling at 1pm or 5pm she comes round and knocks our door to complain. I also think she has a problem with us because were asian as when she came round last she was very rude (bearing in mind it was only 5pm on a week day) complained about the noise and also went on to say you kind of people are alwys a neusense and use have been since you got here. what rights do we have????

I had a 'one off' 50th Birthday Party on 1st September 2012. I called the police beforehand and advised the police that the music would cease at 11.30pm. The music was played by a band and they were located in a marquee in the garden. The police thought this was very reasonable. I also advised the immediate neighbours about the event and invited them.
On the evening of the party two men from Envirocall came to the house at approximately 11pm. They came onto the property, uninvited, via a garden gate. They advised that a complaint had been received and that the music had to be turned off as it was after 9pm. They also said the sound recording levels were too loud. ...............It was explained that we had called the police and that the music would finish at 11.30pm. There are no negotiation and they were aggressive to me (one waving a finger in my face).............They said that 'unless I turned that off' they would issue a writ and if I still failed to turn off the music, they would confiscate the equipement..........

Is it possible for me to obtain the following information?

1) copies of the sound records - notes taken by the two individuals that came onto my property.
2) The time that Envirocall received the complaint.
3) Newcastle City Councils and Envirocall's policy in terms of the training advice given to their employees regarding the issuing of a noise abatement notice.
4) Full details of the exact policy in terms of noise levels from private parties and acceptable times when music might be played.
5) Is it normal procedure to 'turn off' music in the absence of a noise abatement notice?
6) Is it normal procedure to 'turn off' the music, with out first asking to perhaps 'turn down' the music?
7) Is it normal for one complaint to stop band at a private party - bearing in mind that they were going to finish in 15 minutes anyway?

This party had been planned for many months and my husband and I consider ourselves to be very reasonable people and good neighbours. The event cost a considerable sum and was held as I really wanted to celebrate being 50, having been diagnosed with breast caner in 2008.

These individuals ruined the event and upset me greatly.

I believe it is my human right to have a 'one off' party in these circumstances. Am I correct?

In my deeds dated 1959, it says, among other things, that no caravan is allowed to be parked on the land, and neighbours not to live in a manner to spoil their neighbour's enjoyment of their property. Well that says everything , but has anyone succeeded in taking any deeds rules abusers to court?

My neighbours are almost constantly in the back garden, always with a group of around half a dozen friends/family. Their conversations are loud and the language used is often terrible. Added to that, their dog is out most of the time and barks continuously.

When it is warm, opening the windows is not an option as it sounds as though there is a party in my house. Even with the windows and all internal doors shut, their noise can be heard above the TV in our front room - their back garden backs onto ours, so this should give some indication of how loud they are.

Unfortunately, my bedroom is also at the back, and due to illness I am regularly bedbound and need lots of quiet rest. This has now become impossible and I find myself constantly hoping for rain so that they will go inside!

The summer holidays has made things even worse as the friends and family bring along their children, who are allowed to kick balls against the fence; throw band snaps (those exploding cap things); and scream without being taught any consideration.

Right now there are 6 adults, 2 teenagers and about 5 children in one small back garden - this is the norm. We have fantastic children's play parks only minutes away on foot where the children could be playing without getting under each others feet, which causes constant bickering.

I am now sat with ear plugs in but still the noise is unbearable.

Being that the noise is caused by conversation rather than loud music or arguments, I feel as though my grounds for complaint will be limited and sound petty. It is truly ruining my life though. My health is bad enough without having to endure this every day. I am at my wits end. The neighbour simply laughs whenever we tell her how noisy they are.

My neighbours bought alarge trampoline last year & promptly placed it against our adjoining tall fence. My only outside access is via pation doors also close to this fence. When the 8/9 yr ols kids & adults use the trampoline - this impedes on my privacy - especially in summer when my pation door & only fresh air source in open! They yell & screem in excitement & have a clear view straight into my livingroom! I have blinds which I can pull closed-but feel I should not be left to suffer this way in summer expecially as it is cutting the fresh air from circulating my house. I work mornings therefore they have all that time to enjoy on this apperatus while their neighbour is not home- yet they insist on making my life a misery by impeding on my privacy while I am home & sitting out in the garden with friends etc.I DID ask my neighbour to please move it & gave the reasons why, but he was rude & abusive. I will say however that for the first few months he DID move it every week or two from one side of the garden to the other as they noticed that their grass had suffered as a result of the lack of sunlight getting to it, but over the last 4 months it has remained in the same spot & looks unlikely tho move. I do not want to approach him directly again as he is brutish & a nasty man. Can you please advise me what my rights are if any?

My neighbours have been really bad with the loud music and shouting, but since she became pregnant and had the baby things have calmed down a lot. I still hear them most nights talking with their friends as they cannot talk quietly. The other night they were all cheering and stamping their feet due to the boxing being on but at half 10 at night I felt they should have been a bit quieter so I politely asked them if they could keep the noise down a little bit and it ended up in world war three with him saying I was wrong to even suggest they keep the noise down, surely I was in the right for that at that time of night. I have let them off with the back door constantly being opened and closed at all hours of the day and night and the fact she does her washing at midnight and I can hear it.

I am renting my property for 6 years. It was really great neighbourhood until new family moved in. It is very small street and the mother of the family in particular made everyone life a misery. She is kind of "I owe it here" person. Because of her, council put strict parking rules in our street (there was no problem with parking, we were used to talk to each other if there was an issue), she called parking officers to our neighbours few times and they got tickets etc. We were not used to such a treatment from one of us so everyone is angry with this family. My problem is that I live next to them and we share same wall. There is constant noise, argument etc. I can live with bit screaming but recently they are having heavy repairs done. Last time I had argument with her was on 25th of December - yes Christmas- there were using heavy machinery for walls. My house was shaking and noise was terrible. Now they started again. Can they do heavy repairs on Sundays as well? I always though that it is against law! Any ideas? My council is Waltham Forest but we have strong feeling that they are council tenants and so far they got everything what they wanted from them. Looks like private tenants have no chance.please help

@Me Firstly, you could approach your neighbour and explain that his camper van is blocking both the light and the view from your living room and ask him to move it (maybe he hasn't realised). If this is not feasible I would contact your local council and explain the problem to them there may even be by-laws that prohibit the parking of vehicles over a certain size on private property. I certainly don't think you are being unreasonable. Good Luck!

My neighbour has just bought a massive camper van which is now parked across his front garden and thereby blocking light and view from my front room window. Where I sit and therefore look out of the window now consists only of the rear end of this vehicle. Is it unreasonable of me to feel agreived? What rights do I have to get him to move it, if any?
comments appreciated.

Can anyone tell me if there is a by-law restricting the hours a milkman can deliver?

Our neighbours 'Organic" milkman delivers 3 times a week, Mon, Wed Fri, any time between 3.30am and 4.30am.!!!

People living in my neighbourhood always seem to have parties at inappropriate time and without notifying any neighbour and talk well into the night. as I type there is a part going on at number 11 and because we are in a row of houses all our gardens are lined up so its easy to hear. Why dont people take into consideration that others need to sleep because of work.
dog lover 27/05/2012 at 3:42 pm
I live next to an elderly couple who enjoy making complaints about me. I live on my own apart from my dog. When I take her outside, I monitor what she is doing but she does bark at sudden noises. When she barks, I stop her - she only barks for a few times before I catch her. She also barks when the paper is delivered but again is stopped after a few barks.

As soon as she barks, the neighbours complain straight away and are quite aggressive about it to me (yesterday they shouted that they would have my dog taken away from me.). They've now taken to standing at the gate and bad mouthing me to other villagers - playing the "gentle old couple" card. They bang their doors (to entice my dog to bark) and shout at each other. Their dog is not allowed to poop or urinate on their own grass but is actively encouraged to go on the front of my garden. I've suspected that a few stones have been thrown at my dog but cannot prove it.

We do live in a village where there are a lot of other dogs, some of which also bark but my neighbours only complain about mine (they complained last year about the noise from my dog although my dog had died 2 weeks earlier). As they are being so obviously unreasonable, I'm taking the stance of ignoring them and refusing to play along - hoping that they will make a complaint against me. But its not easy.

@CJP unfortunately as it's a communal parking area there is not really anything you can do.

I live in a row of five town houses where there is a communal parking area. One of my neighbours has a dirty, broken-down caravan which he uses to transport his motor bikes to weekend events. He parks the caravan outside my house and it is really blighting my enjoyment of my home and garden. It is fully visible from bedroom windows and partly in view from the lounge and garden.Visitors always comment about the state of the caravan. I have asked him if he would at least clean it up but he has refused to do anything. Needless to say it is parked out of sight of his own property. Is there anything I can do?

We have neighbours who live opposite who have 3 cars, 2 children and 1 large dog. There is no garden as such only block paving round the house. They have now had an orangery built in the space where they used to park 2 of their cars. Consequently, these 2 cars are now parked outside their house directly in front of our lounge window permanently, making it impossible for either ourselves or visitors to park outside our house on the road. They are the type of people, especially the man, who think they own everywhere and have a right to do exactly what they want. He used to park on the wide pavement in front of our kitchen window and after numerous reportings to the police, they eventually made him move his car. the dog is shut outside most of the day and evening and barks at everything and everyone going past. It is a very large dog with a tremendous bark. We have reported this to the local council and as above, we were sent a log to fill in, but mysteriously, the barking stopped until the month was up and then allowed to start again. We have reported this 3 times and the same thing happens everytime. These people make ours and surrounding neighbours lives a misery. What can we do. We have lived in the same house for 43 years, have had 2 children and 3 dogs over the years and never given anyone cause to complain. why do some people have no respect for others. It beats me!!

We got on well with the chap nx door until we had an extension which we needed due to having three children he has none and doesnt need the extra space as he lives alone. Since then he has made our lives hell with parties that started 4 in the afternoon till 6 the nx morning. The council put a stop to it so now hes moved on to hammering and drilling from 7am till sometimes 11pm every day when he gets back from work and all weekends. Its Easter weekend and hes drilling and hammering as I text this can't take much more. When we had our extension the builders stared at 8am and finished at 5pm and never worked weekends so he was never home when they where here. Any advise on what to do, tried talking to him ended up with him and his brother getting drunk and throwing a brick at r window lucky for us they missed.

I live in a development of flats where I have a car parking space which is allocated to me by title deed. The car parking is not marked and people often park in my space. If I see the person I say to them and ask them politely not to park there. If I don't see them I leave a post it note politely advising them the space is legally owned by title deed and asking them not to park there. However, a recent tenant in the building persists in parking there what are my rights to deal with this issue?

Our problems started about 2 years ago. Firstly with a deaf, blind old dog that the family next door adopted. They would go out every Saturday and Sunday for hours on end...the dog would be left in the house howling - quite literally from the moment they closed the front door to the minute they came back. This persisted for about 4months...we asked if the dog was OK and even offered to let the dog sit in our house whilst they were out so it wasn't alone. After repeated requests, and not wanting involve the local council so we could at least sort it out amicably, they got rid of the dog - only after I had stated that we'd had enough and would call the RSPCA about the matter if they continued to do nothing.

Since they have got rid of the dog, we have now suffered from the "lady" of the house slamming the front and back doors whenever she goes in and out...including taking a single item to the bin - just to have the excuse to slam the door.

Last July my wife and I had driven from Edinburgh to our home, North Manchester. As you can imagine we were very tired after the journey and just wanted to spend the remainder of the Saturday in front of the telly (we both work during the week). We had not been in for more than 10 minutes when the front door of my neighbours house started to constantly bang. I went around to ask if they could stop it because it was becomnig annoying...to be told that there was "nothing I could do" from my neighbour (the "lady" again!). I even suggested propping something behind the door to stop the banging. I was told that "The front and back doors were open so a breeze could blow through the house...and there was nothing I can do about it". Not even a hint of cooperation.

I escalated matters to my local council. They follow the practice of sending out a letter to the noisy party and a log book to the complainants - which allows me to record incidences for a period of 1 month - they have done this twice. However my next door neighbours go mysteriously quiet during these periods, leaving me with nothing to record.

We hear EVERY cupboard door slam, every footstep throughout the house - including their 8year old son running and jumping everywhere. I'm not a killjoy, but when you hear this from c6am right through to gone 10pm most nights it becomes annoying! My house actually shakes on occasion through the violence of the door slams and heavy "thuds" that emanate through the walls. The "thuds" sound like someone dropping heavy items on an upstairs floor.

My wife and I are at our wits end...

HELP!!

@desperately sleep deprived. You need to record the types of noise and when they occur. Keep a diary of this for the next few weeks and then take it along to you local environmental health department. Because it's a public place/licensed club it should be easier for them to take action.

I live in a rural area. My property, a bungalow, backs on to a green area. About 40 or so yards away from the back of my property is a minor union league Rugby Club. There are regular events going on here, parties and such, where they have live bands performing as well as a DJ.This goes on during the week also. Last night, Saturday 17th December '11 was the latest of these events, where the music went on til 1.30am. As well as the noise from the loud music, there are also the noisy revellers. Men shouting and picking drunken fights, the women cackling, cars revving. I have recently paid out for brand new double glazing at the back of my property to, hopefully, minimise the noise. It hasn't worked. I have a four year old son who I have to drive to school every week day, feeling like I do now, like I'm about to have a heart attack or a stroke. Can someone advise me on what I can do about this? I know there are nose pollution laws but what I have found only seems to refer to private, residential parties. how do I tackle someone with licensed premises, and more than lilkely, permission to hold these noisy events?

the house next door is rented out. it has no carpets & has had the original floorboards restored. i now feel the tenants live in my house. i can hear every noise & have to go to bed when they do, this can be 3am, & then get up when they do. i hear every cupboard being banged, doors being slammed, kids screaming, etc. i have informed the landlady who is now living abroad, but she didn't even bother replying to my emails. i am having this problem with every tenant who moves into that house. its hell as i'm on my own & disabled. i feel like giving up sometimes, i couldn't approach these people neither.

Like neighbour above we too have had trouble for an inconsiderate and ignorant neighbour. She went through a period of two weeks of DIY where she was banging and drilling until after midnnight. We tried to be reasonable but she didn't appear to think her behaviour was at all inconsiderate. When I confronted her one night at 10:30 she just shrugged and said she didn't complain when we had our exension done. I had to remind her we a) informed her in advance and apologised before the event and b) all work started after 8a.m. and finished by 4.p.m. It did eventually cease but not due to our complaints to her - I guess the "project" was completed. She has subsequently been drilling and banging in the party wall on several isioated occasions since, usually starting at around 7 p.m. - great when we are trying to get our young kids to bed. She "didn't realise the time" and "it will only be five minutes" (the latter at 9:30 at nighht !) I don't think she is being intentionallly obnoxious she is just completely ignorant and without consideration for anyone else ! My wife now speaks to her because I am afraid what I might do with her drill / hammer !

My daughter plays the drums and is study for a drum examination to be taken next year. She has a drum kit set up away from the house next door to cause the least inconvenience. She only plays them for a short while - 30 to 40 minutes and does so during the day when most people are not it. She normally plays three or four times a week. She has been playing drums for a least four years. Recently our neighbour complained to the council about her playing. They initiallly threatened my daughter with the police. At no time have they ever complained to us about this prior to this. They were asked to complete a disturbance log but failed to do so. Are we being inconsiderate allowing are daughter to practice for her exam at reasonable times and what rights do we have in this matter? We sent the council a lengthy letter putting our side of the argument but have heard nothing back from them.

Very sadly, some people seem to delight in annoying their neighbours and will do so at any opportunity. Step forward our neighbour - he has now started operating a repair business from a little bedroom using an industrial-type sewing machine. He used to do this work in his shed but, for some unfathomable reason, moved his equipment into the house some weeks ago. These semi-detached houses have thin walls and every sound vibrates. We are not even sure that he can legally do this - they are definitely NOT the sort of people who can be approached about the matter.

Would be nice if people could show consideration for a child settling down on a school night! My neighbour thought it was ok to drill up to 9pm, despite my pointing out that my daughter had to go to school the next day and he could have waited until the following week and the kids would be all of school but insisted that because it would only take 5 more minutes he would continue?!

Anyone had problems with security lighting? My neighbour has a light that goes on and off intermittently but lights up my windows, including my bedroom. I asked the guy to lower it which he did, but then he put it back up again as he thought someome had been messing about by his shed and he refused to lower it. I contacted enviromental health who visited him and he is supposed to have agreed to lower it but didn't. I am really distressed by this and it's affecting my sleep and I feel it's an invasion of my privacy, any ideas?
