Theft between neighbours is not always obvious. It rarely involves someone walking off with your lawnmower. The types of theft that cause real problems today tend to be subtler: using your broadband, taking electricity, or helping themselves to items from your garden over time.
Many neighbours would never consider taking something that belongs to you. But boundaries get blurred for some people, and a small number are quite brazen about using what is not theirs. Knowing what counts as theft and how to respond can help you protect yourself without making things worse.
WiFi theft
Wireless internet has become a basic utility in most homes. Unfortunately, not everyone wants to pay for their own connection. If a neighbour uses your WiFi without permission, this is commonly called piggybacking.
Someone else using your connection will slow down your broadband speeds. If they use a lot of bandwidth for streaming or downloads, you may notice buffering, dropped video calls, or sluggish browsing. But speed is only part of the problem.
A person on your network can potentially access shared files on your devices. They could also use your connection for illegal activity, and that activity would be traced back to your IP address. In some cases, they might introduce malware or viruses onto your network.
Unauthorised access to computer networks may fall under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and could potentially breach the Communications Act 2003, depending on how the access was obtained. The specific application to WiFi piggybacking is not firmly established in case law, and prosecutions are rare. That said, it remains unauthorised use of your property and internet service. If you are concerned about criminal liability, seek current legal advice.
To protect yourself, make sure your router is secured with a strong password. Avoid using default passwords, which are often printed on a sticker on the router itself. Most routers allow you to see a list of connected devices through their settings page. If you spot devices you do not recognise, change your password immediately. Another form of theft that sometimes occurs between neighbours involves electricity. Someone might run an extension cable from your outdoor socket. In flats or converted properties, shared meters or unclear wiring arrangements can lead to one household paying for another's usage.
If your electricity bills seem unusually high compared to your actual usage, it is worth investigating. Check that no cables are connected to your external sockets. In shared buildings, you may need to contact your landlord or management company to confirm that meters are correctly assigned.
Tampering with electricity supplies or meters is illegal and dangerous. If you suspect this is happening, contact your energy supplier. You can also report suspected electricity theft to the Stay Energy Safe scheme, which is run by energy networks and suppliers across the UK. They have a confidential hotline and online reporting form.
Gas theft can be reported through similar channels. For any gas safety concerns, contact the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Taking energy without paying for it is a criminal offence, and suppliers do investigate reports.

Garden and property theft
Some theft is more visible but still awkward to address. Neighbours who help themselves to fruit from overhanging branches, tools left outside, or garden furniture are not uncommon. Items left in front gardens or communal areas can go missing over time.
Legally, taking someone else's property without permission is theft, regardless of where it is located. The value of the item does not change this. However, proving who took something can be difficult unless you have witnesses or CCTV footage.

This is particularly important in situations involving tenants and landlords, where disputes may need to go through formal channels.
If you have clear evidence of theft, you can report it to the police. For ongoing or lower level issues, your local police force may suggest mediation or refer you to a community resolution service. Many areas have neighbourhood mediation services that can help resolve disputes before they escalate.
Keep records of any incidents: dates, times, and descriptions of what happened. Photographs or video footage can support your account if you need to take matters further.

The elderly woman continued to harass my family. And finally my son in law saw the elderly couple at the electric box on their stairwell on david's property.
My family called the previous owner of the house they had bought and the previous owner said 'the elderly man downstairs was always at the electric box and to keep an eye on him.
a week or two later the elderly man and his wife called the police to say a wire had been cut and assumed it was my son in law who cut the wire.
Even the police when they saw the box said someone had rigged the wires up to the street lampost for electricity.
The police knew it was the elderly man but nothing was done about it, because they are elderly.

I've been going through it in two different locations for over 5 years now possibly longer. When moving it started happening straight way. They came in whilst we were asleep, as soon as were out of the door. They came through loft, then when the watertank is, just plaster board in between. I think they are filming us too. I've boarded up the loft hatch, boarded up the water tank door too. Water usage increase twice over when moving, even though we no longer have baths. They hacked the wifi, continuous, laptops, 3 phones, tried everything, have quite a bit of IT knowledge just not hacking. All locks were changed. Audio of them getting into house. Set up security but it was wifi based so made inoperable. They get into car, steal petrol and anything they can get in there. House, food, candles, jewellery, toiletries, washing powder, bowls, glasses, creams, money, anything they can carry. Neighbours know, they must do, have done nothing for this time. Police have done nothing to assist. MP nothing, citizen advice said they not heard of such things. Phone cloning, sim cloning. They hacked my daughter college laptop. Locksmiths should be licensed. What kind of world is this when its not even safe to live in your own home anymore. I can't wait to get a good nights sleep. Whatever happened to Karma? Would love to get together to do a class action against the police, or set up a vigilante groups where we share security items etc and help one another out. This isnt right. When I was growing up, I called my neighbours auntie and uncle and they came on outings with us. We need to educate these people what community really is. These people around me have more than I do, so I dont understand why they keep stealing from me. They've also tried to run me off the road. There has to be a solution to all of this, before it gets worse.
Police can't do anything about it. The spy cams I put out seem to disappear or are tampered with. There are cams in here because they come in during the day and during the night while I'm here. At first I thought it was my husband doing it, but now I'm wondering if I have it confused with my neighbors. Things happen too fast for it to be Bill, my husband. I think it's my neighbors. The woman who lived here before me, had severe Alzheimer's. I'll bet they had the cameras going and I'll bet they were taking advantage of her? Finally the manager stepped in and had her daughter come and put her in a rest home. This woman wouldn't leave the state to be closer to her mom because her sweet heart is buried here. I'm sure the neighbors must have taken advantage of her, now they're taking advantage of me, because I've moved into her apartment. They've left the cameras in place, in my bed room and by my kitchen.
I was out late washing my windows of my Jeep. He was watching every move I made. I had to use the bathroom. Went in and right back out as quickly as I can move, just as I heard the door of his girlfriend shut. Everybody else was in bed. I'm disabled and live in a retirement community so the residents are a little older than I am. I looked in my Jeep where I found my wallet sitting on top of my purse. Why I was so careless I don't know, but things will be locked up moving forward.

The nextdoor neighbours not only have access to all of my digital equipment hardware and softwares emails, telephones etc they have control via WiFi they also have influencers to get you sectioned with Paranoia... So not only they harassed me mentally with their childish games, they have given me a medical condition!...

Imam over 60 and ADD so not most organized house and my neighbor wh gave key knew never wanted these people in my house.
I believe they sold my household products ( i bought to sell in retirement).

They never clean up when it fouls up the garden.
Went to the police station and they said I shouldn’t have waited but called the police straight away, I live on my own I’m frightened what they may do when I go out to the shops, or anywhere, they might posion my animals.

I topped £50 over a 6day period I live in a two bedroom flat with my son and I work 9-5 Monday to Friday. My workplace is a hour away from my home so as you can imagine I spend more time away from home than I do in the home.
I have reported this matter on several occasions and nothing is being done about it. I am so financially drained I cannot afford to live. Moreover, I now believe for certain somebody is bridging my electric, I am not sure how I go about finding them out!

Problem is we dont get on with neighbour, we had a row some time ago over us cutting our hedge down. But they were on about getting gas in. We have seen a lot of stuff such as pipes and a gas fire etc go in. But from experience we know they dont seem to hire official contractors for any work. Thwy had teenage lads fix their unsafe chimney withouy any scaffolding who used a ladder to get up n climbed along the roof.
Is it possible our neighbours are stealing out gas and how would we know.
Our monthly bill has suddenly rose to the level we woukd nornally pay in a year so it definately not right.
