How I Dealt with Neighbours' Noise: A Case Study

How I Dealt with Neighbours' Noise: A Case Study

When neighbour noise becomes a problem

Moving into a new home often feels like a fresh start. But some people find that persistent noise from a neighbouring property turns what should be a sanctuary into a source of stress.

Noise complaints are one of the most common neighbour disputes in the UK. They range from occasional loud music to ongoing disturbances that affect sleep, work and general wellbeing. The good news is that there are practical steps you can take if you find yourself in this situation.

Recognising a pattern

A one-off party or occasional loud evening is usually something most people can tolerate. Problems tend to arise when the noise is frequent or erratic.

Common sources of neighbour noise include loud music or television, arguments, dogs barking for extended periods, DIY work at antisocial hours, and doors slamming repeatedly. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 also covers noise from business and industrial premises, so commercial noise from neighbouring properties can be addressed through similar channels. What starts as a minor annoyance can quickly become wearing if it happens several times a week.

Before taking any action, it helps to keep a basic record of when the noise occurs, how long it lasts, and what type of noise it is. This information may be useful later if you need to involve your local council or take the matter further.

Trying to resolve things informally

In many cases, people genuinely do not realise how much noise travels through walls, floors or gardens. A calm, polite conversation is often worth trying first, though it will not work in every situation. Choose a neutral moment rather than knocking on the door in frustration at midnight.

If speaking face to face feels uncomfortable or has not worked, putting your concerns in writing is a reasonable next step. A short, factual letter explaining the issue and asking for some consideration can be effective. Keep a copy of anything you send.

Our free Noise Complaint Letter Builder can help you draft a clear and measured letter if you are unsure where to start.

Some people find that mediation helps when direct communication has stalled. Mediation involves a neutral third party helping both sides talk through the problem. Some local councils offer free or low cost mediation services for neighbour disputes, though availability varies. It is worth checking what your council provides.

When informal approaches do not work

If the noise continues despite your efforts, you can make a formal complaint to your local council. Councils have a duty to investigate complaints about statutory nuisance, which includes noise that unreasonably affects your ability to enjoy your home.

The council may ask you to fill in diary sheets or use a noise monitoring app. In some cases, officers will visit to assess the noise themselves. If they find that a statutory nuisance exists, they can issue a warning notice or take enforcement action against the person responsible.

Your local council's website will have specific details about how to report noise in your area. GOV.UK also provides general guidance on the process.

If you rent your home, your landlord or housing association may also be able to help. Many tenancy agreements include clauses about not causing nuisance to neighbours, and landlords can sometimes take action where the council cannot.

As a last resort, you may be able to take private legal action through the courts. This can be costly and time consuming, so it is usually only worth considering if other options have failed and the problem is serious.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Looking after yourself

Living with ongoing noise disturbance can take a toll on your mental health. If you are struggling, it is worth speaking to your GP or contacting a support service.

Dealing with neighbour noise often requires patience. Many disputes do get resolved, but it can take time. Focus on the steps within your control, keep records, and seek support where you need it.

Organisations like Citizens Advice can provide guidance on your options, and your local council's environmental health team can advise on formal complaints.

Common questions

What is the first thing to do about a problem neighbour?

Speak to them. Most neighbour disputes never get past a short, calm conversation if both sides hear each other out. Pick a moment when neither of you is rushed, stick to the practical effect on you, and avoid blame. Going straight to the council or police usually slows things down rather than speeds them up.

When should I escalate beyond talking to my neighbour?

When there is real damage, when behaviour is repeated despite a clear request to stop, or when you feel unsafe. At that point, written records become important: dates, what happened, who was there, any photos. Environmental health, the council anti-social behaviour team, your housing officer and the police all have different powers.

What if my neighbour gets aggressive when I complain?

Withdraw and stop direct contact. Threats, intimidation and persistent targeted behaviour can be reported to the police, and may amount to harassment. Keep everything in writing from that point on, including any further communication, and consider asking the council about mediation as a safer middle path.

@Mel That sounds genuinely draining, especially the late night episodes with the daughter. Start keeping a written log with dates, times and duration of each incident, as your council will want this before they'll act on a statutory noise nuisance complaint. Have one more calm chat with the mother first, then report it to Environmental Health at your local council. If you rent, copy your landlord in too, as they often lean on tenants faster than councils do.

My neighbour has two young boys 7 and 5 and a 12 year old old daughter , the boys are constantly shouting, screaming, having tantrums, slamming doors , the daughter frequently wakes us in the later night hours swearing and shouting in her bedroom , the mother shouts at the boys which escalates their noise , whats my next steps

My horrible neighbours think they have a perfect right to play music so loud it penetrates the 2 foot party wall. I am dreading the summer when they will move outside and begin playing in the garden. I have made polite requests, threatened to call the environmental health officer, etc. etc. They respond with smarmy smiles or blank looks, and carry on as before. This has gone on for over a decade. The only answer when I am truly desperate is to blast 'em with baroque. Handel's Fireworks Music turned up loud will pretty much drown anything!

Please can anyone offer advice! I've just worked my backside off for 2years and saved up to buy my own place. I moved into a ground floor apartment and upbove lives a family of 4 2 adults and 2 children. This child whose about 3 sounds like he has autism as he runs around, makes noises and bangs things continuously from 7am till 2am in the morning.I can't go to bed until he has stopped and he starts again all over in the morning. I work 6days a week and I'm shattered from this. My son has also missed college days as he's he not had sleep. They own the apartment. I've tried earplugs they don't drown out the banging and there's no where to escape. Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My landlord reported my neighbours (private tenants) for a barking dog they were keeping in a one bed, first floor flat and they since took up causing me issues at home, this included lies to get police out and false statements of being followed. These lies had no proof, were dropped immediately and complaints to the police ombudsman found in my favour. However in the UK no action is taken against people for wasting police time. This went on for a year with me getting the council involved, submitting noise app recordings, that were listened to 9 mths after they were submitted, making a diary and by the time they went to do anything of any meaning (if not council tenants it’s very difficult to take action, apparently, even if the council is the freeholder ???????) I had decided to move as after that long of intermittent upset and the style of upset, there was a clear sign these people weren’t well. In short dont live in Islington, rubbish council, poorly put together properties, overpriced with poor sound insulation. Most importantly avoid council housing blocks and if you do find one google it, mine turned out to historically (90s/00s) be for people with mental health issues… mystery of strangely behaved noisy neighbours solved!!

My neighbours are just awful, there are two teenage kids from a troubled background who live with their nan , the 18 year old lad grows cannabis which I discovered when i was furloughed last year, the noise from the fans all night from his growing activity , low frequency humming that drives you crazy, even with earplugs you can feel your jaw vibrating. There is an alleyway at the back which has a constant stream of people coming to buy cannabis and they whistle up to him as they dont use phones as they can be traced. His garden always has three or four hooded figures hanging about and they sit out until 3am smoking weed and gibbering like chimps shouting and swearing all night and now those silver gas capsules everywhere. I can even open my windows or put washing out as they throw stuff at it. I contacted the landlord and as punishment got my house flourbombed as a warning , I contacted the police and landlord and they just expect me to keep a diary, Im selling up but scared about putting a for sale sign up as I know they will play up to any prospective purchasers.

I have a young female and young kid above my flat who make terrible noise . He runs everywhere thumping his feet like he has lead boots on and the mother has parties loud music different Male friends on a near weekly basis who do gardening and other jobs then I've to endure the bedroom antics at weekends with all these friends who do the jobs . She works with elderly in care homes but still lived as normal during lockdowns with parties and friends galore visitors etc whilst putting others at risk . What do you do with such a horrible person ? . Anyone who works with elderly putting them at risk during a pandemic with parties gatherings etc in my opinion isn't worth talking to or even trying to reason with . Selfish through and through clearly . Nobody in authority seems interested in complaints .

In a tiny 2 bed terraced attached to me there are 5 adults, one toilet and shower . They rent from a family member who owns the house . The garden is awful as they also have 2 large colllie dogs . I honestly think when the census recently came round to be filled in i bet those living there didn't add their true names . I would love to find out but dont know how to . Anyone know . ?

One of the biggest issues in my experience is New Build construction. Minimal soundproofing, despite it being classed as acceptable to acoustic measures. It's the bare minimum. Add a loud(er) neighbour and the party wall doesn't take this into account! Add noisy children - they tend to be, slamming of doors, scraping chairs, hard floors, booming tv's & Alexa... the list goes on & so do the problems. In a nutshell, it appears people aren't as quiet as they once were, in general and yet semi-detached, terrace & flats aren't equipped with insulation that can sound-out a loud sneeze or cough! New build's are constructed cheaply & very basically. Extra TRUE soundproofing is a luxury most cannot afford, if they could, they'd probably be in a position to own a detached. I fall into the 'cannot afford' category! As for help from Housing Associations & local council's to action anti-social noise... minimal. With a Housing Association, it's a process of, open a case, keep a diary, point a mobile phone at a party wall as close as you can for 30 seconds using an App (The Noise App) in an effort to obtain some evidence. At the beginning of the case opening, the person(s) making anti-social noise are contacted. They know a complaint has been made and in the 2 weeks of diary completion, you shall often end up with little evidence because the perpetrators have purposely gone quiet, since they know they are being monitored. The case is closed and there's simply very bad feeling left. After the monitoring period, the noise pollution starts again. Open another case. The system of reporting is shocking. If you are lucky enough to obtain evidence, then the neighbour receives a first warning. It's difficult to move to the next stage after this point. Involve the council, it begins again with a diary, they write to the neighbour. Council's state the Noise App is subjective. I would agree but it is a cheap method, putting the onus on you to have the device available to aim at walls for 30 seconds - not taking it into account that the phone is in use for work or study and you cannot spend every waking minute poised to do so. Housing Associations do have more sophisticated sound recording devices but try to get them set-up in your home? Near impossible. Of course, Covid 19 helped these agencies shirk responsibility for any systems of use. Abatement Orders - year's down the line if you even reach the stages of equipment seizure. Also, judges don't evict many. It's not in anybody's best interest to lose their home, especially as there is usually a list of excuses for behaviour and a matching box to tick. When you have neighbours that are yobbish, it's startling how they can fight the fight with some form of 'disability'. Complain to council's too much and from a written warning letter outcome (if you get that far) then, when you have finally lost most of your marbles and decided to try and sell - you have to declare the involvement of the council to pe

We have a family, next door they have 3 children under 5 yrs.
The parents are school teachers and a nightmare to live next door to.
They all bang doors,in/out of the house all day especially as the schools are closed.
Children run up and down our driveway, scream talk very loudly.Balls, balloons, come over in to our garden. They use to have a cat when they first moved in.Poor cat was always meowing at our back door @ 5am.
Never looked happy.Hardly surprising. I kid you not,my daughter and i counted how often the door banged, opened closed in 1 day last summer 50 odd times.I wrote down the times 9.20am - 5.20 pm.so when my husband got home i could account for
being angry and tired. We cannot wait to move from these obnoxious neighbours.

I moved into my new house in 2013 and loved it for 3 months until my new neighbours moved in, the lodger then thought that night it would be acceptable to start playing a drum kit at midnight!! They thought it was acceptable because the street was mostly “young people”!
I complained tor around 4 months to the council/enviromental officer but was told to keep a diary which was difficult because i couldnt bare to be in the house and moved back to my parents. The noise was unbearable and not just the volume but you could feel it throughout the house so there was no getting away from it. I was a single girl living there on my own and it was causing me such anxiety having to keep going round to knock on the door to ask the two lads to be quiet! The council told them the noise level from a drum kit was unacceptable in a domestic house and that if they continued they would be fined £5k or have the equipment taken away.
Luckily the lodger moved out shortly after this for a few years but has since moved back in a year ago, so far only a little noise nuisance but it gives me such severe anxiety im looking to put the house on the market now. Horrible that one person can completely affect the way you feel in your home which should be your sanctuary. I completely sympathise with anyone with awful neighbours.

I’m 99% sure one of my neighbours has a vendetta against me. My partner and I are nice polite people, we keep ourselves to ourselves and try to stay out of people’s way. I have had my car tyres all punctured, twice!, while parked on the road (no driveway). The neighbour in question who also has no driveway always parks his giant van in the same spot on the road, right outside my house. He doesn’t work so it rarely moves but there were a couple of times I was able to park there last year and both times my tyres were all punctured overnight. That’s £400 worth of replacement tyres I had to pay for. Punctured probably by a dart the garage said. I’ve barely spoken to this man but for various reasons I am certain it was him. We have heard him telling lies about us to other neighbours. He doesn’t know anything about us. I have parked far out of the way since to avoid trouble and have had no issues... Until tonight when the road was full and I had no choice to park outside my own house(!). Less than an hour later, the van is back and my car has somehow moved itself several metres away. Do I report these things to the police? I have no evidence it is him. I am considering buying cctv on my credit card just to deter him but it may make him angrier and he seems like a dangerous individual. I am so out of pocket and wondering why me? I’m now desperate to sell my house that I worked so hard for 10 years to buy. I’m so sorry to all the others who are commenting here with their neighbour problems. It’s hard to realise there are so many vile people in this world.

My neighbours moved in 4 years ago, a single Mum with 2 girls who are now 7 and 16. They were fine for a few months and we barely knew they were there but then every Thursday evening the Mum had friends around who would be screeching and shouting till the early hours of the morning, sometimes in the eldest girls bedroom. This went on for months but we put up with it, then it stopped and they started congregating on a Saturday instead. If the weather was warm they'd all be out in the garden and in the house with loud music. It gradually increased to 2 sometimes 3 nights a week. During the day there was arguments between the Mum and eldest daughter, or the Mum and the kids Dad where we could hear every single word. Then they mounted their tv on the chimney breast so we could hear the constant low hum over the noise of our own tv which is on a stand. We tried to ignore it but then the tv got louder and louder until it was possible to hear the commentary. My partner went and spoke to the neighbour and she was so sorry, she had no idea. It made no difference and the noise continued until one day last year when I banged on the wall and she came and banged on my door. We had it out and I'm sure we provided entertainment for the people across the road but I didn't care at this point and gave it to her with both barrels. There was crocodile tears and she told me how difficult it is being a single Mum but I told her I was a single Mum for 13 years and didn't use it as an excuse to make everyone elses lives hell. As soon as she realised I had zero sympathy for her she backed off. For the next few months it was great, she was considerate and it was bliss. The past few weeks it's all starting again and I'm a mess. I have spent almost all of my time in the bedroom because I can't stand being in the living room or dining room which is also my sewing room. I hate myself for letting it get to me again because it's nowhere near as bad as it was but I feel like I'm constantly waiting for that other shoe to drop. On Sunday her and the eldest girl were screaming at each other for over 3 hours and the whole street must have been able to hear it, then yesterday she was out all day and her eldest daughter now 16 was at home with the youngest now 7 and some other kids who were banging and screeching all day. We own our house, mortgage is all paid for, we're retired and want a quiet life but the garden is now off limits because of the noise next door. I'm on antidepressants and beta blockers and feel like I'm losing my mind.

I have two speakers which I place against the wall. They can share my music.
One thing to realise is, you are on your own, for example music, the boom boom kind, started at midnight. I called the police, not open, called local authority, not open. Wrote complaints as I have done before but I expect no help and after six months I have received none.
I want to avoid being caught up in never ending stress, a downward spiral, which has created a stroke recently, so I am thinking that I might have to move.
They do not like meditation music, especially OM which you can get on you tube, anything peaceful disturbs a troubled soul. Remember, you are not dealing with civility and sometimes you are dealing with madness. Good luck.

Oh my so delighful neighbours the ongoing story continues the vile creatures who lived next door to me for 3 years and partied each weekend for 15 hours a time moved out and moved her parents in , the apple doesnt fall far from the tree , the gardens front and back never been weeded or tidied , the fencing panels blown down and rotted , and now got a dog , its allowed to bark for as long as it wants while they sit inside watching tv or whatever , the dog sits 4ft from me hidden by my 5ft fence and goes on and on . Ive even bought a dog whistle to try to distact it but its not working . The delights of low frequency neighbours . Ive now got ear plugs to wear on a sunny day . Yes i know compared to what you are all suffering mines a holiday camp now but i needed to vent my pent up emotions .

Sometimes im sick of this life its 4 and a half years on now and before they arrived i was a happy person getting on with my life at 71

Moved into what we thought perfect apartment in seaside village. Agent told us upstairs flat lived in Spain and only returned once a year for a month. Great we thought. Wrong, what we weren't told was every other week or so they let their friends use the flat. It's then we found out that theres no carpets, although we can't hear talking you can hear everything else, including every footstep if they need the bathroom in the night it wakes us them stomping across the floor. The washing machine and dishwasher noise vibrates and hums through the floor, scrapping of furniture and gosh why can't they just close the door, and not slam it 50 times a day. Anyway we moving in 5 weeks and I'm terrified it will be the same or worse. I'm pretty sure I'm now suffering from mental health issues. Good luck to you all. I feel your pain.

I can often hear the thump thump thump of music from the adjacent block of flats which shows how loud it is. I try to block it out with my TV (not so loud to disturb my block) and I wear ear plugs to sleep. But honestly it makes my anxiety go through the roof. I get up early for work (like lots of people) and the idea of a disturbed nights sleep is awful. I just dont understand how people who live so close to others can be so so selfish. There needs to be more done about noise complaints

Hi I have a big problem With a neighbour who lives next to me. He sleeps all day doesent work and then he awakes. At 7pm at. Night and starts blasting music til 5 having lots of people in smoking drugs, drinking alcohol all night loudly shouting back and for all night slamming and banging. Told my landlord who hasn't done anything about it he just said your more than welcome to ring the police. Which I think is wrong why should I ring them he is the landlord he should sort it. I don't want to phone the police as the neighbour will know its me and will cause more of a atmosphere

What should I do with a noisy neighbour who live on top flat? They have got kids and they constantly running or jumping on the floor. Have spoken to them few time and also their landlord already but doesn’t seems like anyone cares.Luckily they don’t make noise after 9pm that’s why council can’t do anything about it.Even the noise is during the day still is so loud and nothing that we would be able to tolerate it. Please advise what should we do?
Sandy 27/02/2021 at 1:11 am
I have a solution for some of you. It's not a long term one but it will help you get a little peace every day, say, 1 or 2 hours of quiet time for you to read, paint, play or even nap. You cannot live with it permanently though, as you don't want to get used to it. A white noise machine - get the best you can afford - but - make sure it has the water sounds. Only water can truly mask noise. It blocks out outdoor noise 100% (cars, children screams, anti social behaviour, music) and indoors you will no longer hear anything from your neighbours unless it's something that you will FEEL. So, washing machines, music with bass - you will still feel those sounds so your brain might ' hear ' them but far less than you would without the sound machine, barely audible. You won't hear your neighbours' voices no matter how loud, and you won't hear them walking around. And if you don't have carpets, get some. Also add paintings to your walls, proper thick curtains (not the rollers), and anything that absorbs sound. What you don't want is an empty white room. The sound from the white noise machine is delightful, I love listening to water streams. It's perfect if you are working from home. For anyone dreaming of a detached house to escape noise, forget it, unless you have no neighbours. I know this myself, now in my 3rd detached house in the UK. It's all the same. People in detached houses have other issues to put up with - loud entertaining in garden (sometimes with live bands), spoiled rich kids with purpose built play areas, DIY (it's constant), and gardening noise (lawn mowers, trimmer, leaf blowers.. every season). And the worst thing is, you've invested your life savings and it's not easy to get out. Your neighbours will own their house so there can be no eviction, and the police cannot do much except stop drunken parties, if you're lucky. Also, you will still hear impact sound! (the bangs you all describe) Whenever your neighbour closes his gate it will vibrate through your house too, and worse, basketball and other ball games, the noise vibrates right through our detached house. And there is nothing you can do about it as it's not considered a noise nuisance. Don't gamble. If you want a quiet house, you have to go rural and find a spot you know they won't develop on and build anything that can be of nuisance. Or try tiny house living, and more importantly, learn to be self sufficient before you make that move. Try a few courses, learn to grow your own food, learn to fix things yourself. It's worth it. We're making that move after covid, as heartbreaking as it is because we otherwise love our home and town. People are selfish and it's not getting any better with every passing decade.

I have a problem at rancho valencia resort. The yoga building is below us. Only class at 845 every morning is driving me crazy. The instructor yells one two three yea for one hour it comes thru our family room kitchen. Some days goes thrust to back yard. They say it’s no problem. All other classes are quiet. Who do you call. I turn my music up very loud so I can stand being in the house

I am as so many people a victim of very loud noise:music, shouting, screaming, loud talk, every kind of noise, the amazing thing that council, police, all organization are zero help, and they only waste your time if you ask their help!
The more amazing that the solution is easy but no body want to apply it!
Which is:strong law and punishment for noisy people, and all of this will stop, but goverment don't seem care!
Why?
Who know?!
Do you know the answer?

I have a big problem with neighbours who live two doors away. They are a young couple with 2 young girls. The problem is that the children do nothing but scream both inside the house and outside in their garden. I do not know if there is a problem with autism but it is making me very distressed especially as I have my own diabetes to manage and my partner has MS. On Christmas Eve the children were out in the garden after 19.00 hours screaming as they ran round the garden. It was extremely cold and they were out there with just party frocks and no coats. The noise was so piercing that I had to switch the fan on while I was cooking the evening meal to drown out the noise. In the end I went out and asked the mother to stop annoying the neighbours. Yesterday 29/12/2020 exactly the same situation both girls outside screaming for at least 20 minutes. I felt obliged to go out and tell the mother that the children were causing me distress. She replied that they were her children and that she would not listen to me any more and simply walked off. This is a neighbourhood made up of retired elderly people and I am very upset that no one else causes any problems with noise and yet we have to put up with behaviour which is totally irresponsible and with a total lack of thought or concern for anyone ellse. Is there anything you can advise please - this is doing me a lot of harm.

Part 2 (just realised there's a character limit)

I'm really worried about being broken into - also obviously concerned about anti social behaviour. I know from speaking to other neighbours that there was immense problems on my street just before I moved in as my house and one other had been designated by the council for short term tenancies meaning they were used for people in crisis (and basically were being used as drug dens).

Anyway just needed to vent but if anyone has any ideas let me know. Thanks!

Rev.TchaTchamomonomi

You're comment is almost nonsensical, but the sense I can make out of it I don't like. I worked and saved for years to buy our first house, this house and sorry to upset your delicate sensibilities but we have a right as a family not to be abused in the street and in our garden, in front of our children etc simply because we complained about arguing and screaming in the middle of the night and dogs barking non-stop. Just because you are a council tenant and need a house, doesnt mean you have a right to make everybody's life a misery and abuse people for daring to be unhappy about your anti-social behaviour. And we can't move because we plowed everything we had into buying the house and took out loans for work and can't move while there are legal issues and problems ongoing with those tenants. But you would know that if you weren't some sad little troll trying to get a rise. Well you got one, pleased with yourself? I hope you feel good now.

Hi all, so saddening to read your stories and I hope you all have a happy ending and get some peace.

Me and my family have also been going through similar for the last 3 and a 1/2 years. We bought the house of our dreams, a semi in a good area, lovely garden and my son's school at the end of the road. Tenants next door are HA. the day we moved in we heard the dogs barking and that went on for 3 hours nonstop, that was just the beginning. We tried approaching them but they weren't interested in engaging. We wrote polite letters as they sometimes wouldn't answer their door. Eventually, after 6 months of putting up with some days 8 hours of pretty much non stop barking, we complained to their HA. That was the starting point of the anti-social behaviour. They started knocking on our walls, lots of shouting and screaming, dogs barking, door slamming, thumping on floors and walls etc. We found out their neighbour is also a relative and they got involved as well as other family members of theirs. We've been abused and threatened with physical violence, my husband has been followed in the street and intimidated. My kids have witnessed all of this. We have multiple complaints, incident diaries, police incident numbers video and audio footage etc. And they are still there and still causing us bother. We are both now taking anti-anxiety meds too. I just don't know how much more we can take. It feels heartbreaking.

Please please contact your local authority if you are having issues. I suffered with a noisy alcoholic violent neighbour. I called the council out at least once a week for a year, I made notes of everything. It took a year but it went to court and he was evicted. I provided statements to police for the case. If you stick with it councils will take action, they have a legal duty to

I was putting up with them until this week when he started screaming obscenities at me and threatened to come up -his partner begged him not too, said so urgently I’m inclined to think he had a weapon. I’m now a nervous wreck... I pretend I’m not in and when I’m out I don’t want to come back. Totally trapped with covid etc, I want to wake up from this nightmare... I should feel safe in the place I live (It will never be home) but I’m terrified :(

I suffered 3 years of hell my neighbours now rent out their house to family and the family are quiet so far . Im thankful every day but i will sell my house if the two vile creatures that made my life hell move back in , i could never live attached to them again .

Id like to say if you live on social housing you should have the support of a housing officer whos job it is to support you after all you pay rent . Sadly if you own or are buying your property its more difficult because i was told by police etc that home owners are entitled to have a life , even though they received letters from anti social team they ignored every one and guess what the case was closed ! During one distressing call i made yet again to anti social team the woman told me it sounded as though i had a vendetta towards my neighbours and i was offered counselling .......honestly

But the vile creatures moved out somewhere and rent their house out , wherever they live i feel for their neighbours because they are the lowest of the low .

I feel deeply for you all

I didn't realize there must be a character limit on this so my story was cut short. I can't write it all again, but I am genuinely deeply sorry for anyone living with nasty, rude, anti-social neighbors because it truly does ruin your life, steal your health and makes you unable to function when the situation is bad enough.
K.D. 07/11/2020 at 12:22 pm
First, I have read every one of your posts and my heart truly does go out to each of you. I read so many sentences that are exact words I've said or thought myself that I never would have thought I'd feel or write until this happened to me.

I'm broken down crying as I start typing. 5 1/2 years ago (also on a Saturday, I'll never forget) the new neighbor started moving in. It was a nightmare. I should mention, I'm in Germany so as for the legal issues that you all are dealing with, we have no Asbos here or public health officials. This would have to go to court.

She was 19 at the time (I only know that because after she'd been here wreaking havoc for months, she started "dropping" her doctor excuse from having to work due to "psychiatric conditions" on our doorstep and on the floor by the mailboxes in the stairwell.

On move-in day there were 20-25 people, many just standing around outside and I thought "social work students". I don't know why, but that's what came to mind. ..The family were bringing her things in in trash bags. When we move, we put our bedding in trash bags, so no disrespect about that, but they had more trash bags than boxes. And we live in very small apartments and also the stairwell is very narrow. They stood outside our door screaming down to people outside through a window that only one panel (very small panel) opens. So no one could hear them and the screaming back and forth continued for the time they were moving.

Then they left. And amid all the trash bags they left a little dog. This is not the dog's fault, they rightfully believed they'd been mistakenly forgotten and left behind. For the next 9 hours straight the dog barked. Nonstop. Our balcony is right next to their window so I tried to talk quietly to them and let them know they hadn't been forgotten, but of course that was hopeless.

I can not begin to recount what happened in the following weeks. Besides the family dumping dogs off in the apartment, the person living there screams every word they say, throws trash down in the stairs, allows the dog/s to go to the bathroom all over the backyard area (gardens because there are actual houses owned by the same landlord that we're connected to), keeps birds, has caused insect infestations in the house that spread to the other next door neighbor...it is a never ending nightmare.

In Germany you have to give 3 months notice before you move out. The people above her and the apartment next to her across from us, both moved before the three months was even up. At the moment I'm typing this, the person who had moved in across the hall almost a year after the other tenant left, gave up and moved too. She was too scared to tell the management why she was leaving because she knows they protect this family and she moved into another unit managed by the same company.

We do have in writing from our management company that they realize there is a problem, but that's get

I have the same problem but only just realised I suffer from CPTSD. This means that any bang, crash, sound of someone’s television or music will trigger an emotional flashback from hell. I don’t know what my parents did to me to cause this but it’s not pleasant.

I moved into a housing association property 2 years ago, (still here) im very quiet as im here on my own OMG! talk about nightmare neighbours i have two either side of me, that create nothing but trouble, and intimidation, and there not the kind of people you want to approach, but i painstakingly did diary notes, used my mobile phone to capture the audio, and had proof, it took me two years to report it to the community support police, as i was scared of repercussions, luckily i have a good police officer that regularly calls me, time and time again he said let me go in to them and warn them, it was only yesterday i allowed him to speak to the neighbor on one side, and touch wood its slightly quieter, but i feel for anyone going through this as i too am still going through it, some days i cant even go out, and when i do i don't want to come home! i let my housing officer know, and im waiting for a transfer to get the hell out of here, what i would say to anyone in social housing, is report it by 101 on the phone, get a log number, keep doing diary notes, if you can get audio evidence use your phone, and do not retaliate, although its tempting, call the local police that deals with antisocial behaviour,

This is so cathartic to read. I have had to deal with a nightmare neighbour for several years now.

I look after my disabled mum and the guy who lives upstairs is the worst. He'll play loud music and loud instruments regardless of the hour. He can start at 12 in the afternoon and keep going until 8am the next morning. He's an alcoholic, who whenever he's been confronted immediately attempts to threaten people.

It's got to the point where I genuinely detest him and it's affecting my mental health and even turning me towards drinking more as I feel less agitated whenever I've had a drink.
Noise ocd 20/10/2020 at 12:09 am
Okay, so where do I begin...

Initially my first neighbour related noise problems started 11 years ago in a ground floor flat. I was only 17 at the time and the couple above would sleep all day and stay up all night playing films and music through a massive sound system. Approached them numerous times to no avail. Ended up moving out.

My second bad neighbour then came 9 years later and lasted just over two years. An older couple who initially seemed okay until 3 weeks in and music started in the early AM. This proceeded on various nights when the husband was working and the woman was in the house by herself. We approached her a couple of times but she was a very unsavoury character. The first time I approached her she turned the music down for twenty minutes then back up again. Second time my partner approached her and she apologised and kept the music down for that night only. After approaching her she would then ‘get her own back’ by banging stuff against the walls in the day pretending she was cleaning. We had the thinnest walls known to man and could hear the neighbours on the other side using the toilet etc. Ended up moving.

Lastly, in my current property we have lovely neighbours one side and then a family who think it’s okay to slam, bang, crash and run up and down stairs and stomp everywhere. This goes on throughout the day. I have approached the gentleman who even questioned if I had got the right house and that it ‘couldn’t be them’. I almost laughed out loud when he said that. Since approaching him the slamming has marginally improved but the stomping of their children (who are old enough to know better) continues and every single time I hear it I just cannot put it any simpler than it just goes right through me and makes me so angry. I actually hate them SO much. I cannot believe we have moved from one noise hell hole to another!! I am becoming obsessed with them and check to see if their lights are on and whether they are sleeping yet. They seem to sleep and then wake up and all sorts. No routine which I cannot stand! The noise could happen at any time which means I cannot relax and am not myself. We still have quite a lot of months left on the tenancy too so in it for the long haul. We said this would be our last rented property before buying (which Covid put a hold on) but I’m not sure I can last here.

All properties where I have had noise problems have been rented and I’ve hated every single one of them.

I literally sit here just thinking about noise and any little noise makes me jump. It’s getting to the point I cannot think about anything else other than noise. My partner does not think the neighbours at my current property are that bad but I had to disagree. Admittedly they can go hours without making a noise but the fact they may make a noise at any time just puts me on edge. It isn’t just a little noise either it’s a startling bang, crash or stomping that goes through the house.

Absolutely disgusting, and

Omg I have the same problem with the temporary flat above me I've barely slept in 3 years because of the evicted people who get placed above me and my child we can't sleep in our own rooms adls the noise is so loud the people who are there 2 or 3 weeks at a time move in at all hours of the day and night and make out lived hell they make noise on purpose when I ask them to please not make noise after 11pm on a school night and the last ones were very unpleasant they harassed me and my child making noise and stomping very loudly on purpose to scare my little girl who is only 4 I asked the people housing them to stop made complaint after complaint (just like I've been doing the last 3 years) and was told my complaints were irrelevant to them go to the council they are not going to stop using the property for the temporary housing of evicted people they house there unless the council tell them to soni went to the council and they refused any part till I gave them proof I'm a council tenant but they wont move us even with the 3 years of logs of police reports, noise recordings, petitions and even every complaints not only by myself but other tenants and all I got told was the government let us do this so make any petition you like we wont stop using it for temporary accommodation??? How the hell can they get away with leaving us here. I've had people urinate through my letter box because I had to call the police because the weed they was smoking was affecting mine and my child breathing, as it was coming into our flat from theirs and the communal hallway was thick with smoke. the police did nothing and have done nothing to help with all the threatening behaviour from the people place above us they allow them to get away with everything while me and my child are forced to live here! being called liars even though I can and have provided them proof of everything I've said to them and am telling you all now and just refusing to do anything both mine and my child health and mental health is being effected by this and I've given proof to the council about this and yet they continue to house anti social tenants above us basically saying they don't care because they don't have to live with them. I have so much proof they have breached covid restrictions aswell and even reported to the mps of this country and the police but guess they above the law when dealing with anything as apparently the government let's them do this as a lady told me at the council I'm now withholding my rent till they move us and they ain't even asked for it because they know they are in the wrong!! even now at 12.24am the new neighbour's who just moved in a day ago only 4 hours after the last tenant moved out (and no one cleaned the property after the last tenant left) are making horrendous noise it's so aggravating to have to keep putting myself in danger going up there to ask these people to please be quiet continuously I've asked the housing group housing them to put

I’m so glad to have found this site. Our neighbors are the grossest people ever and I mean character. They bang, jump, stomp like jolly green giants, drag furniture, talk so loudly at times we can hear their conversations, rock on their work bed frame where the squeaking travels into our home. They smile and apologize. Classic passive aggressive. They slam doors like Neanderthals. They bounce balls right outside our window which is low to the ground which makes it right at our heads. They play the victim and feel that we are to accommodate them. Talk about privilege. Their door squeaking on it hinges. Their toilet flushing. Their washing machine noise. Those are relatively normal noises living in a building with others. Even footfalls, but not stomping and marching across the floor. The husband makes so much noise leaving out for work that it sounds like the entire family is having a parade just inside their door. They drop heavy items all of the time. And, they’re liars. I texted about the noise and I was met with questions: Running? My...are running?...I tell them to walk like mice...” Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Those must be some genetics mutated mice because what we hear are sounds one would hear in an indoor gym with play centers for a variety activities. They’re animals!

Am angered by these two fat husband and wife who don't have the courtesy of living upstairs. They never caution their baby elephants that run and jump off the couch all day till 4am everyday. I wonder if they ever sleep because there is always stomping and banging. I hate them.
I wish i never rented a downstairs, because they are jobless fellow who stay home all day causing fuss all over our living room and bed room.
The floor creaks when they walk and i understand that the building is old but these illiterate couple fix everything they do to midnite. Vacuuming, dishes, washing etc. I can't wait to get out and am glad am not alone in this anxiety struggles.
Karma will catch up with them definitely if they do some stuff on purpose to annoy me
The Dude 01/10/2020 at 7:09 pm
How cathartic it is to come across this site! I am so empathetic to so many of these entries, and sincerely wish all your problems may be resolved.
My girlfriend and I live in an apartment building. We are pretty tame I’d say for being in our early thirties. We both work full time and are in bed by 9:00. We haven’t had a soul over, partly because we are introverts and largely due to Covid.
I have recently had to start working from home and the past few months I have nearly lost control of my mental health, which I have come so far to get a handle of. There are two men living upstairs. I can’t lay all of the blame on them as I believe in large part, our issue is caused by substandard construction. I can tell where they are standing down to the centimeter due to how much the floor creaks and booms with each step. I can even tell when someone is standing still shifting their weight from leg to leg.
The problem is, the noise does not stop. At any given hour of the day, there are bangs, booms, screaming, slamming. I know it’s not great to throw out assumptions but if there was rampant stimulant use occurring upstairs I would not be surprised. It sounds like we are below deck of a colonial-era warship where there is a jiu-jitsu class in session above.
Our property managers do. not. give. a. sh*t. I’ve inquired about getting an inspector over to confirm the floor/ceiling is to code and to see if they’d be receptive to installing some sort of noise-softening flooring, which I proposed would be mutually beneficial given the age of the building. They ignore me and refuse to schedule an appointment with me.
We have decided it is best not to engage the neighbors as they’ve given indication they may be armed (one of them has a note on their car threatening to “shoot anyone on sight” he sees messing with or playing around his vehicle). I am at a point where I think it is best to scrap our money-saving plan and try to get pre-approved for a mortgage, then try to refinance in a few years. I fear for our safety, and our sleep schedules have been destroyed. Every boom, slam, and shout I hear gives me horrible heart palpitations and makes my anxiety skyrocket. I have tried so many coping mechanisms and breathing exercises, but I am just exhausted and depressed trying to deal with this around the clock. This is no way to live, I pray that we can find a way out soon.
Best wishes to you all on resolving your issues!
Village 30/09/2020 at 6:33 pm
And agree with the other comments write a letter to state what you feel? How it's making you feel and if it happens again what you will do?

That's what we did. You won't be friendly with them but you claim your self respect back as regardless no one has the right to judge someone else especially when they have their own issues.

With noise, keep a record if the letter does not work and call in Environmental Health they can then take it further!

my neighbour has numerous chiming clocks. The person came to live in an adjoining bungalow 2 years ago. We have talked about this problem of chiming clocks and at first switched them off at night . I received a threatening letter of his landlord accusing me of bullying his tenant and best friend and if I carried on this way they would put someone in I really wouldn't want to live next door to. The clocks have been turned on again through the night with a chime at the half hour added and is even louder. Will the council use a noise monitor to calculate the noise pollution..

I know you may think I am being stupid but I am terrified of who will be moving into the rented house next door.

(part 2)
....despite it being so bad and I'm just whining about it for the sake it. There are complicated problems behind everything that keep me stuck here as of yet.
I've gone through highschool getting worse with each year because studying was so difficult with all the noise. Wear headphones most of the time, damaging my hearing. I even hear noises now when there are none because of all this insidious noise pollution. It's simply so awful. This environment has traumatized me, my body is in stress mode 24/7. I rely on medication to relax for just a few hours. I'm struggling with college like never before.
Now COVID has made things.... unbearably worse. For months I was stuck home, in the place I hate the most. Whereas prior to the pandemic, I would take any opportunity to go out, study in the library, meet my friends, I wouldn't come back til late on purpose to avoid this place. Now I'm not irresponsible, I would not risk my family's health by being out when the contagions were high (and my country is amongst the most affected by COVID, besides government actively made being outside difficult). I don't hold a grudge against that because it was for the greater good and I would take the noise over the virus any time, but that doesn't change how quarantine caused my already precarious mental state to get worse.
I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety that make being outside among people an unnerving stressful experience. Usually with exposure and practice, it gets better - isolation on the contrary brought me back to square one. I'm relearning how to handle socializing and being in public without getting uncomfortable again. It's paradoxical and absurd. It's like I'm not allowed to have peace, neither by practical living circumstances nor my own treacherous mind.
I've been depressed for years for my own personal issues, and this place has only enhanced that. Now I use medication and therapy to survive, but I'm becoming suicidal again.
All I can think about is running away. Sometimes I get so angry I wish to actually hurt these neighbors for being such mindless human caricatures, they've become monsters in my mind. Other times that very same anger makes me feel bad, because I don't wish to engage and get revenge or whatever, I simply want to GET AWAY and finally have peace and forget this ever happened. I desperately want to have some quiet and rest and heal from this awful, years long experience. Money is the biggest factor, significantly slowing down the whole process of getting out of here.
Thank you to anyone for reading this. I hope we all can solve our neighbor problems and live in a peaceful, comfortable environment soon.
No One 12/09/2020 at 3:15 am
I don't really talk about this to everyone because I feel like people won't get it unless they themselves have lived in extreme noise pollution and toxic environments. But finding this website, I just wanted to share my situation and vent my emotions a bit, hoping to be understood...
Let's just simply say that this place has damaged my mental health in unimaginable ways. I've been living here for almost a decade now. It was not like this at first, and despite being a horrible squalid building right now, it is actually located in one of the nicest areas of town and in the beginning things were just fine. We had no idea what we were getting into.
But progressively with each year more and more uncivilised, disrespectful, down right terrible people moved in and as of now I am CONSTANTLY surrounded by all kinds of noise at all sides. At least a dozen screaming obnoxious children in total, incessant stomping above me, abnormal inhumane shrieking at any hour of the day, noise that won't stop until even 2-3am, fighting, talking so loud I can hear every single word from far away, singing on a mic, blasting metal music, there is always someone doing some work, drilling noises. Neighbors upstairs throwing trash down from their windows, even stealing our things, inviting god knows who to sleep at night at their place, babysitting children and making the apartment above us into a kindergarten, people constantly coming in and out of the building stomping around like elephants, the stairs and common spaces are always so dirty... It's genuinely torturous. No respect for the condo rules, no civility, nothing.
Landlords DO NOT CARE. We cannot get noise cancelling windows because it is not our property. We did everything we could, talking with neighbors at first but they didn't care, fighting, writing letters, even calling the police. There is no more point in doing that... No, the only option is to move elsewhere.
To make things tenfold worse my own family is unbearable to me, they're toxic, dysfunctional, I cannot stand them anymore. We have to go separate ways so of course we are searching for different apartments now... And we are also poor. If we could we would be out of here years ago. But we cannot afford to move as we please, wherever we desire. It doesn't work like that. And the prices do not accomodate you: they only go up. So the rents that are seemingly affordable are just the same awful buildings like this one. We carefully research because we don't have money to waste. It has been very difficult to move out to somewhere better and secure.
On my part, I'm losing my mind and my health. If personal troubles were not enough, I've been stuck in this God awful environment for the most part of my teenage years when I could not even legally go away. It's never that simple, I cannot even explain everything but I feel the need to make it clear that I don't stay here on purpose despite it being so bad and I'm just whining about it for the

I live in a detached house, but I have neighbours on both sides think they can do what they like, they play their sub Woofer all day long, they must be on the dole. They own their own house how they manage to pay for it god knows.
So I work from home and these guys knows I am annoyed by their doof, doof.
I have mentioned it , threaten them but they just laughed and continue playing louder. I contacted the council, the police who came and gave them warning, they continue. I decided to open all my kitchen windows and switch on the extractor fan and fried chillies it let out fumes and I could hear these guys coughing and shouting.
They knocked on my door I said what is the matter go and play your music, they just left. I have have heard no sound since. Please guys if law takes long to help you have to find ways to stop these selfish people, trying to find legal ways kept me sane so hang in there keep up the pressure you will win. I want law to act fast and enforce the good law we have.

I have Owned my house since June 1981. The problem is that it's in the Bronx, New York in a nice area where there are all private houses on our block with most houses sharing driveways. The problem is my neighbors and I share a driveway from the street to the back of our houses. I have a two car garage and my neighbor does not have a garage but they have room for two cars on their side of the yard. In order for them to park two cars in their side, they must enter my side. No problems with that. The problems I have been having is they sometimes leave cars at the entrance of the driveway or in the middle of the driveway at the bottom where it block my access to our garage. This driveway must be kept clear at all times, 24/7. Never block access. Never, but they block access lot of times. What can I do to stop this on-going problem. I spoke with these neighbors many times but it keeps happening. I need help with this on going problem. I'm a retired First Sergeant from the 82nd Airborne Division and care about almost everyone and don't want to hurt anyone anymore since I'm know longer in the army. Please help me if you can. Thanks. If you'd like to call be. My cell is (407)361-2727. You can call my anytime. 1SG Ace!!!

The house and road we currently 'exist' in is like living next door and around a building site. One neighbour across the road has spent more than a year doing noisy work to his back garden and our neighbours the other side of the wall it's like living next door to a building site with one 'project' after another. The council couldn't care less and have practically said anyone can do what they want when they want. I don't sleep properly at the best of times and get suicidal when sleep deprived. Bank holidays are the worst when it all seems to start. The worst thing is the previous owners lied about who the neighbours were(said it was a couple,it was a house share) so had we known that we wouldn't have even bought it. We moved away from previous neighbours who were similar but at least that street wasn't as noisy.
It feels like we don't own the house, our neighbours do and they paid a lot less than we did for ours! The house isn't even worth half of what we paid in my eyes.
As soon as the current worldwide situation is over, we're selling. If I haven't killed myself by then.
JT 22/08/2020 at 9:25 am
We bought a semi in a decent area. People who sold it to us said neighbours are great and very friendly... They have a 16-17 y old kid who plays electric guitar. Every day. Sometimes late in the evening, when you try to watch TV without turning volume up and cracking your windows. They also love to turn music on really loudly then sit outside in the garden, talking really loudly. My husband and I have been working from home for month, I often have to apologise in online meetings because of loud music, or kids screaming next door or them just shouting. We have not spent a single nice weekend outside in the garden in peace because they always have a lot of people over and are extremely loud, we cannot actually hear each other when talking. Couple months ago I was going to be after 10pm and they had radio on really loudly. I tried ear plugs, didn't work. So I walked over and asked him to turn it down and he switched it off. And this morning I planned a bit of a lie in, but no, just before 9am loud rock music banging theough the window. I really cannot understand how can people be so inconsiderate and selfish. I feel for everyone who has similar or worse issue, it really is soul destroying.

i swear i sometimes think how much better it would be if i just took my life , all the noise or maybe just kill all my neighbours, its how bad it gets for me.
Tolkienista 17/08/2020 at 4:39 pm
I've read through many comments on this website today and the despair and harm done to.mental health is simply immeasurable. Unless you've had difficult noisy neighbours, you can't envisage how it can take over your life. For me it's an elderly woman who has her t.v. On loud every minute of her waking hours and no matter how often I ask her son and daughter can they lower it when they visit, it's always back up within minutes of them leaving. They're not on my side at all and for me, it's wearing.earplugs in bed, because her t.v. comes through the wall and the feeling that I'm the one who has to compromise because of her age. As I say, unless you've been through it, you don't know how it affects your life.

Everyone on here has my full sympathy and a problem shared is a problem halved.

Im a regular visitor to this site because ive had my share of appaling neighbours and i feel for you all. My story may not be here now as it was a while ago . Im blessed as my unpleasant neighbours actually moved out and have rented the house to a quiter family.

I decided to write to the Police Commisioner asking for support for people like us who suffer anti social behaviour . It may not get me any where but i wanted him to know that no one helps . The anti social team did write to my neighbours and phoned them but they laughed and carried on raving . So im now waiting to hear from the police commisioner . May i suggest as many of you do too , especially if housing associations , councils , etc wont help . It would be only right some kind of legislation or boundaries were put in place to support us . Best wishes from one who has suffered at the hands of despicable people

I have lived in my council home since 2005 had a nice elderly neighbour on one side who owned his home and on other a family of 9 in a council home both neighbours were fantastic neighbours all was well until the man died sadly and that house was bought to rent out the other side family moved out. Got new neighbours in council house who have constant BBQs and music on loud and been putting up with this on/off over few years and still putting up with it. Other side a family moved in for several years and were not so bad then they moved back to Poland. Then the property agency let the house out to another family in September last year and the garden is a dump they were very noisy kids running around at 2am and banging doors etc. Last week think they moved out been nice and quiet on that side but now I dread who will move in next because seems the place letting the property out is letting it out to immigrants and I doubt they will clear the garden to make it look nice so we get some working class people in. Both sides do not work . They are driving me and my family insane. Told the council about ones in council house but they don't seem that bothered at all. Can't afford to move anywhere else either so we are stuck. I feel for them that are having same problem. Sometimes I wish I were deaf life would be bliss. Sorry if anyone is actually deaf but I am afraid that's how I feel.

Hi all. I hope some of you who already posted have sorted out your problems, I wanted to share my experience with a noisy neighbour.

It started about 4 months ago. I work nights and remember going to bed at noon...I started to hear strange music, almost like there was a band practicing nearby.. I wasn't sure where it was coming from (yet) it wasn't really that loud either (yet) and it only lasted an hour or so. This continued over several weeks, disturbing my sleep. Then it went 24/7. ONE album of what I can only think of as some sort of party/rave mix. It got louder too. It's been going on for over nearly two months now NON-STOP.

I tried to get the council involved, they put me in touch with an environmental health officer who explained how things work when dealing with a noise complaint 'It can be a painfully slow process, especially when the first letter doesn't work'.

A letter has now been sent to the offenders. The EHO told me she would be in touch in a couple of weeks(!) to hear my thoughts.

I'm going to tell her I'm still not happy about the music. The offenders are over the road and down a little, I'm surprised no one else has complained (the EHO told me this), despite two neighbours saying to me that they are sick of the noise.

I think the EHO will be sending some audio equipment which is to be set up in my flat so the music level can be recorded. This is as far as my enquiry has gone.

Sadly I might not be able to help the EHO any further, I'm looking at flats to rent elsewhere and want to move in a few weeks.

Hope everyone gets their noisy problem neighbours sorted, good luck.

I have lived in my current house for 15 mostly dreadful years. After years of renting myself and my then wife and 2 kids bought a terraced house in a not too great area. We bought right at the height of the property frenzy just to get on the housing ladder and it quickly became apparent the area was dreadful, immediately we got eggs at windows stones thrown which smashed a window, every car I have had has been vandalised , jumped on etc, garden furniture stolen etc etc. We had intended to move up after 4/5 years but sadly the marriage broke down and she walked out on me and our two boys .
Anti social behaviour around here is the norm and anyone who stands up to it is made to regret it .I am now divorced and still live here with my two ( now grown up sons ) . we all work but my neighbours are all on benefits and the neighbours on one side are appalling. They are all taking drugs ( class A ) , they talk openly about drugs, they grow cannabis too and the alley at the back is constantly full of people whistling and their 17 year old son is dealing to them, they sleep most of the day and start to wake up mid afternoon, when I get home from work as soon as I open my back door they are sat there smoking cannabis, they throw stuff in my garden and at my house and a constant stream of lowlife hang about the house well into the early hours. Last week they started to party at midnight and were smashing bottles in the back and doing karaoke until 5am. I get up for work at 5.15am :-( .... I have spoken to the police who have done nothing, social services who told me that if people didnt want to engage with them there`s nothing they can do ( the family is known to them ) and finally the landlord which is a housing association for troubled families who promise to ring me back but never do. I`m putting the house on the market and the estate agent tells me the property has lost £10k since I bought it despite putting in new kitchen, bathroom and central heating .....because of the area and the junk in next doors garden front and rear .God I feel low..........

Moved into a semi detached just 3 weeks gone, after 7 years in a flat with constant noise issues and about 4/5 different tenants.

First week into the house I spoke with the new neighbour to find shes hard of hearing and asked if she was ok to turn tv down a notch as I work dayshifts and got to be up at 4am. She said yes thats fine.

Issue has been constant for a week now and I approached her last night, in a nice friendly manner and this time she didnt take it too kindly.
She said her tv volume is at 40 (which is nearly half and is loud)

I sympathise that shes hard of hearing and I did try to make my point to say that I am not trying to stop her watching tv and would like to compromise on the situation, as with me having 4am get uops, but before that could go ahead she closed the door on me.

I spoke with my landlord and they said they will try and get in touch with the council. But with an elderly person who is hard of hearing, Im not sure if there is much they can do, apart from ask her to get hearing aids, turn her tv down, move the tv to a different location

Ive lived in my house 18 years. Recently we have spent a fortune renovating it, something we could never afford before because we have 3 kids. The house next door has been converted into 2 flats and rented out, the family living in the upstairs flat are lovely people, quiet and polite. Last year a young girl moved into the downstairs flat, we have since found out she is a student. When she first moved in she would play really loud music. The music would go on at 7 am and not stop untill 3 am every day. We could hear it in our bedroom, evan though she was in the downstairs flat and our bedroom is upstairs. My husband gets up at 3am because he is a postman, he went weeks without a proper sleep. I myself am a nurse working 13 hour shifts. If I am working a day shift I would get up at 5. I found I was also going to work on only 2 hours sleep a night, and then having to look after patients. When I work nights I knew I was in for no sleep. During the day we couldnt evan watch tv, because we couldnt hear it over her music. We tried talking to her, but she was very aggressive. In the end we gave up and reported her, something we didnt like doing and have never done before. She was warned because the enviromental health were shocked at how loud it was, and her music was turned down at night, and she does turn it down now if we ask her, however she still plays it extremely loud in her garden and kitchen every day, to the point we cant sit in our garden and enjoy it. We have found out she has placed speakers in her garden. Although she does turn it down now if asked, it gets a bit much having to ask her constantly throughout the day. Her new thing now is student parties every Fri and Sat night, and although her music gets turned down, slammimg doors, the drunken laughter and very loud talking keeps us awake. Due to our jobs we dont have every weekend off. We have explained this to her but she just dosent seem to care.
She is also very aggresive to me when she sees me (not my husband just me), it has come to the point now that I am scared to leave my house if she is outside, and that includes my own back garden because her back door over looks ours and the wall is low so she can see me. At 1 point she was throwing cat poo in our garden, that stopped when my husband caught her red handed and threatend her with the police. We are now considering selling the house that we have spent a fortune doing up and nearly paid off, and move and literally have to start again after 18 years. People should not be allowed to get away with this. We have tried everything, we have even contacted the landlord and he dosent care aslong as the rent is getting paid each month.

We've been renting a terraced house for around 10 years now. All the tenants that have ever moved into the one house next door have been simply vile. Loud music, banging on the walls, drug usage, screaming and the tenants that are currently living there let their kids play with a rape alarm.
Only recently has it been affecting my anxiety severely and has it contributed to depression, they are not approachable at all, sometimes I wait inside before going to work to make sure they are not out front.
Because of the pattern of problem neighbours is there some way that the land lord can be held accountable?
Call_The_Council 02/07/2020 at 9:36 pm
Short Version: Contact your council's Environment Officer department for noise nuisance STRAIGHT AWAY the first time it happens, ask for a diary to be posted to you.
The police dont get involved its all council.
Dont move, this is your Castle, be strong but act first and act fast!.
But at the same time, be vary careful where you buy and unfortunately there is a "price" to pay in purchasing in areas where a landlord can turn a profit.
I still say its worth it to only buy the property you need as its tens of thousands of interest £ in the long run isnt it. Is it worth paying £500 more a month in interest just to live in 'nicer' area that still has a (lesser) chance of the next door detached 5 bed being rented out?

Long Version:
I live in Terrace house, and mid 20's family of a Romanian persuasion moved in to the rental next door.
Started playing loudspeaker in garden, mates round shouting, drugs, drink etc.
Blocking off other peoples driveways with friends' cars.
Having read comments here and other places, i think it is quite deliberate; sometimes it is to seek people to sell up / move out of rentals so that their friends can move in nearby.
Often up beyond 10pm on a weekday i wouldn't mind the odd weekend night but this is too much.
Tried the 'friendly' approach, asked to stop, turn it down, each time a bit of movement, but then reset again the next time.
So i went to the council after a YEAR of trying to sort it myself after about 9 major ad hoc incidents.
It's the Environment Officers ones, they say ok posted me a 'diary' which i need to fill in 5 events then send them back. I said i got 9 right now, they said ah, has to be 3 from the point the diary is received in the post.
Had 3, and emailed it in. Made a point to mention i have audio recordings from both within my house and with window(s) open to show the impact.
Since then next to nothing i think they sent them a warning letter.
BUT i have taken to playing some music on my mobile phone in the garden not loud but enough that htey can hear it when they are playing their music middle of the day the loud bass and the folk music.
Also, USE SHAZAM mobile app's to record what the music is, eg the singer, the track name etc. then make a log it will add to your case.

This is a terrible nightmare for all of us,neighbors upstairs always run on the balcony and steel stairs next to my sleeping room, i can't sleep sometimes because they he will play with his children till late at night and the burglar gates just keep banging open and close. I honestly i can't take it anymore, i can't even study for my exams as this is eating my mind. I have complained to the agents of this building and hoping this doesn't worsen the noise levels as the these people are spiteful and raw. I leave it to God now

I’ll also mention the hour of music a day was for working out and my previous neighbours told me how quiet I was, that they hardly knew I was there. There’s nothing I can do in three situations

So sad reading these comments, each one has its own story, but each of us looking for answers to an obviously widespread problem. We have lived in this property for 40 years, that alone will give some indication of our age, it gives me no more rights than the next person, and I state it solely to indicate my experience of different neighbours over the years. Never had a fall out with any of them, but boy is the one we currently have making up for all the decent folks before. Maybe we have been lucky and our luck just ran out. I have spoken with council officials and I’m awaiting the backlash which I’m sure is going to happen. Hang on in there, I wish each of you peace.

Reading some of these experiences, I feel for every one of you. My neighbours are driving me mad, made worse by the Coronavirus lockdown. I feel like they are living in my house, may as well be as I can hear every conversation they have as they speak so loudly. Alarm??? My neighbours are my morning alarm, I can either hear them talking at the top of their voices or their dog barks. Since lockdown their has not been a single day that they aren’t in the garden, I know they’re entitled to to but I mean from 7am until late and if we try to sit in our garden their dog barks continuously until one of them eventually shuts it up... for all of 5 minutes, therefore we have not used our garden once in the last few months. The dog they had a few years ago barked at every noise we made, if my house phone rang (wasn’t loud) the dog would bark... if we opened the back door and the dog was in the garden ... it would bark. I lost it one morning when the dog woke me up at 7am on a Sunday, I knocked on their door and told them I couldn’t bear the dog barking anymore, that it’s not fair we’ve gotta put up with this... It didn’t stop it until the dog passed away... but then my neighbours thought it would be a good idea to buy another dog to bark at everything again, it’s even worse than the first dog. So it’s obviously not the dogs fault, it’s the owners who just can’t be bothered to train it. Also the husband is always banging/building something or other... you’d think they lived in a mansion... surely there’s nothing else to build ?? I was trying to finish my university final exams online a few weeks back which I had already informed my neighbours of and asked if they could keep the noise down, nope, the same day he was hammering in the garden for a couple of hours until my head felt like it was gonna burst so I told him to give it a rest for once to put it politely. Is it too much to ask for some peace occasionally... as I’m writing this the dog is barking his head off again ?? I’m even considering moving house as I can’t take it anymore.

So, my daughter, dog, and I have been in our condo since January, 2020. For 6 months to date, we have dealt with the neighbor below us, as we’re on the 3rd floor, having shouting matches, transient company, loud music, banging, slamming, fighting, parties, you name it. Just last night, he cranked up his ridiculous music at 10:30pm and by 12:00am, and after calling the authorities many times in the past, we decided to retaliate back. We were over the point of calling anyone and the letter-writing days have long escaped because this individual is aggressive and there is a thick layer of contentiousness. When the music stopped, after we retaliated back, guess who comes knocking on the door? Right, the cops! ?? The cops after HE was the catalyst for it all! I haven’t ever had the authorities called on me and thankfully my daughter works where she does. I disputed the reason for their being called and sent them down to HIS place as well as informed them he had been loud music for the past 4 hours which was well over the noise ordinance. For example, we’ve laughed before and he’s banged on his ceiling, our floor. He has even came up to our place and knocked so aggressively, that it shook our door. He even has a modified car, with a super loud, ear-crashing muffler, that he backs in and when he goes and returns, everyone knows and feels it because the sound flushes against the building. We‘ve alerted HOA months ago and all necessary people. At this point, it means war! Right? We live on 3rd and have further to walk, so we’ll be claiming an unassigned parking space, where he parks, and the one next to it for starters. Like really, screw him!

How inconsiderate are you, as a male, to call the authorities in these times, on 2 super-quiet women? It baffles me. Thank goodness we’re not the only ones that have a problem with this person, so we don’t feel bad, but something has to change and quickly.

30 years of living next door to nieghbours from hell 5 years of heavy duty low frequency noise and vibrations i think would be known as infrasound Environment health guy picked up on unusual frequencies and an idling deasel generator with his monitoring equipment but the authorities have failed to deal with my noise nuisance iv suffered from sleep deprivation on a regular basis ..i know the gran mother who is a long term habitual alcoholic and chain smoker has had multipul children who are now grown up and like her are out of work and on the sick long term..i have and want to work albait care for others..but these vibrations and heavy duty like pumps and ventilation like noise has turned my entire life upside down feeling down whilst the authorities have been very unhelpful in putting a stop to the hell im put through

So sad reading some of these stories......my heart goes out to you all. It should be a human right to enjoy peace and quiet in ones own home.

I recently moved into a DETACHED house where I thought I could live in peace at last - wrong! I live next door to RACING people that are animals..... They shout, drink all afternoon and play music loudly. I have witnessed one of them urinting up our fence on two occasions and approached him and he totally denied it. They have been issued warnings from the landlord but still continue regardless, probably as they’ve forgotten once the drinking starts again!

I have two beautiful young daughters who are very intimidated by this, we feel we have to hide in our home.

Something needs to be done about these anti-social people ruining lives for us all.

I have only ever found total piece of mind and that was living in a camper van when I was a youngster touring the world.....if not for my daughters I would move out immediately!

Good luck all.

I have had a problem with my neighbour now for over ten years. Loud music, banging of doors till all hours, banging his walking sticks on the floor to wake me up. Even flicking the light switches on and off to try and annoy me. I complained to the council years ago but nothing was done really done as he would just denial all knowledge then go quiet for a while till he was off the radar again. Even got the police involved but they said it’s nothing to do with them and that I need to contact the local council noise team. It’s just like going on a merry go round, no one seems to want to help and I am just suffering here in silence, he knows what he is doing. I hate it, it’s not a home but know I would find it difficult to sell.

It is so sad to read how everyone has been affected by something I am going through as well. We are running out of ideas against our noise and ignorant neighbours, we have tried everything from talking to them and speaking to the council and environmental health. We've even been threatened by the neighbours and the house we live in now feels like a prison to us, we can't use the garden or house to relax and this started about a month after we moved in. the excuse they always use is that the road we live on tolerated it before we arrived and therefore we should get over it. It has really affected our anxiety and stress levels. We are now curious about whether the previous owners of our house had any issues that they didn't declare and wondered if anyone else had experience of getting this information? I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Im so very sorry to read about the hell you are all going through. My story was written on here december 2019. I honestly feel there should be a law brought in by our government to protect us from these horrible selfish human beings . My story can still be read if your interested, though i have now a happy ending as the neighbours moved out 3 weeks ago and renting the house out to her parents who appear to be quiet and considerate , but im still holding my breath because of association and being related . My years of hell hopefully over as i wish for all of you too.

If only there was a way to partition the government to come down hard on these neighbours who cause us distress surely out there must be a solicitor or lawyer willing to start one to help because enviromental health dont carry any weight at all . My heart goes out to you who still suffer .

My newish neighbours in Mill Hill have had a loft conversion and extension to their semi, still not finished from last August even with builders working illegal long hours. Sadly its made their property noiser than ever, especially with slamming doors. This sound always wakes me up so not getting a lot of sleep. I did text neighbour to ask him to be more considerate as he stayed till 3 one morning doing diy work. He was hostile saying I shouldn't send him this as it could be classed as harrassment and all semi detached houses have some noise. He recommended I move to the countryside. He said its his house, he had paid for it and can do what he likes. Also he can't think about noise he makes as he will burn out!

Anyway might mention it to his wife when I next see her as she is nicer. He occasionally parks his car in our front garden, on the grass, also using our drive. He is very intimidating. He has said he wants to buy my house. I'm suffering lots of anxiety as a result. He's not following lockdown rules, mingling closely with a handful of builders but more fool him.

I'm so sorry to hear people are having such a terrible time with neighbours. We have a problem with noisy tenants in the area - mainly East Europeans - who are noisy, play their music loudly in the garden till late at night, and often sit out in the garden till 1am talking loudly. This used to be such a nice area till people started renting out houses to them, often packing in as many people as possible - greedy landlords!

They should make it part of the tenancy agreement to follow the noise pollution rules of the UK. The authorities in this country are far too soft. Enfield and Haringey councils are really crap at dealing with this. I know so many people who have had longstanding problems with neighbours (many of them council tenants) but nothing is done about it. It makes me so angry that decent people have to put up with this rubbish. We need to be more like Germany or Switzerland where such anti-social behaviour is not acceptable. I'm not sure what we can do but I feel we need to put pressure on local government to act. My heart goes out to all you people who are suffering.

We've had nothing but helll from our neighbour for 4 years. We own....she rents. She's a drug user. Her child is feral. She's 'on the game'. Constant noise and fighting. She's spat at me. She's verbally abused me. She's verbally abused my son. The constant smell of cannibis is horrendous. She refuses to use her bin, preferring to throw her rubbish into the garden. Her yappy dog yaps away for hours at a time in the garden. Dog does its business in the garden and it's never cleaned up. Had to report her a week or so ago and she was warned....so now in revenge she's accused me of bullying the child at the other side of me. That house is rented to a drug dealing heroin addict. Both of them bring the street down....without them it'd be a nice street.. Neither landlord will deal with the issue. We really feel like we live in a 'scrote sandwich' haha. Seriously though, we're at the end of our tether and it's now really affecting me. We refuse to sell up and move. Why should cockroaches like thia force us out of our home! I've sent a report today to the local authority and also to the Victim Commissioner for England and Wales.

Hi I’ve just read your comment ‘fed up and ratty’ that sounds awful and the police should hopefully be able to do something it isn’t fair that you have to go through something like this , just like everyone else in this chat shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of behaviour of their neighbours! We had been thinking about taking it to the council but the lad is trying to be nice now so we’re playing it cool and hoping for the best
Fed up and ratty 10/05/2020 at 12:24 am
My neighbors moved in Feb 2019 and we're a pain from the from the word go. Banging, drilling and shouting till 3am. Despite that, we still sent a welcome card after having a polite discussion it wasn't acceptable. Things got worse. Shouting and screaming. Spitting on our property. Blocking my drive so I couldn't get in or out. The shouting wakes up my little girl and keeps us awake. This is almost daily. Enough was enough. Feb this year I took it to the council after I asked her to keep the noise down and she was verbally aggressive. Things since complaining to the council have got worse. They have had a warning and still continue and are worse with each day. We have even had police out. We are at breaking point and even with tonnes of evidence, I feel like we are getting nowhere. We are all affected. No or little sleep. Ratty. Intimated. Totally fed up. Bring polite and leanient got us nowhere. Complaining through the correct agencies is getting us nowhere other than in more stress. I have no idea what else I can do.

I moved into this house with my mum and brother when I was little and I am now in my late teens and still live here , I’ve always had lovely neighbours either side but up until my right neighbour moved out. Then came my new neighbours this was about 3 years ago now , they are really bad trouble! We spoke to them to get to know them, We trusted them and got a long with them but then we went on holiday, my mum was getting sent a parcel full of expensive makeup like Tom Ford Estée Lauder etc , and they took it in for us, when we got back we went round to get it back off them and to thank them for taking it in for a couple days and they told us they have not got it! Although we have cctv of them taking it in! After rows we realised we was not going to get it and just gave up. We never spoke to them since then. Recently starting from maybe the start of January (2020) the youngish lad that lives with his mum who is old enough to know better has started turning his music up louder and louder , we are now in a pandemic on lockdown nothing else to do and every night he plays it loud enough to hear the words, it is not fair we have a baby in the family now and sometimes it’s to loud that we wonder if she’ll wake up. My dad found his Facebook on the internet and messages him when it’s to loud and he reply’s and turns it down but it’s every night ! wouldn’t you think that he would get the hint and turn his music down every late night and save him the hustle of having to text my dad back? We are trying to keep our peace with them as we don’t want to make it go worse but it makes me not be able to go to sleep as his room is next to mine, me and my mum both suffer from anxiety and some night are unbearable to cope for me and I just want to cry, what do I do?

Hi! We've got the same situation with the neighbours above us.We moved to our flat 1.5 yrs ago and all seems to look fine, no problem at all, all nice and quiet, sometimes we could hear things dropped from upstairs or child shouting, but we understood as it was rare. But from the end of March all became a nightmare. First we could hear a lot of running and jumping all day long back and forth, back and forth. We wrote a polite note explaining what kind of noise we can hear from up there and kindly asking if they could do something in regards as it is very disturbing having this all day long while we are also in lockdown. We waited for a week and nothing changed, it was actually worse than before. One day me and my husband went to them to speak nicely, but we couldn't belive what kind of people we will be about to meet. He opened the door and I said to him nicely that we came to see what we can solve in regards of the noise that we have constantly. He said he's there for 3 years(we never met them in more than 1year)and then started to shout and to tell me that I'm crazy because i'm staying home, then she came as well to shout. I said to them to calm down as we came to discuss not to fight when he started to swear and say that he can do whatever he wants in his flat, have loud music, playing games on his playstation and his child can run as much as she wants. We left disappointed as we couldn't sove it. We were thinking maybe they've been angry because we went there but they will think about and will stop, but we were wrong. I started to bang few times in the ceiling when was very loud but they were banging back so bad, probably with a hammer. We called and wrote emails to the management and they have contacted both landlords. Our landlord called us and he said he wanted to speak with the neighbours landlord but no one is sharing the contact details. After another few days we called the police and the council as our landlord advised us and we are now waiting for the 10 working days to pass and to be contacted by the environmental health officer. We really don't know why they are doing this and don't really know what to do about. In the evening, if we have the light on in one of the rooms, he's coming and bangs there, and dropping heavy things on the floor that really scares me. My husband put some bass music, but sometimes we just need to increase the volume to not hear them. Please advice what can we do with these people as we are not able financially to move as everything is more expensive than we pay. It just became a daily stress that i can't get make it end.

We have lived in our property (flat) for past 10 years and I have raised my 6 years old daughter and 3 months baby boy in our flat. From very young age I've shown my children to be caring about my neighbours downstairs and never had any complaints from my downstairs neighbours. Now my children are 16 and 10 years old.For 8 years we had good lives in our lovely flat and cant complaint about it as we had a very understanding neighbour upstairs and downstairs. In 2018 new neighbours moved in, from day one they have been a nightmare, their child started running, pulling, jumping and stomping from 6.30 am until 11 pm.when it became too much ,my husband and I went to speak to them and they did show some understanding and the noises seemed to calm down a little bit then it went back to same situation. This has been affecting my children and myself .I've become very sensitive to noises as this Olympics activities keep on going upstairs and now they have two children ,when the children calm down a little bit then it's the adult drilling, hammering for past 2 years.I dont get how can someone DIY all the times. On and off the children run so fast and crashes on the floor making everything shake in our flat.In early morning and evening they constantly move furnitures .Once I got so frustrated that I banged the ceiling so that to make them aware how noisy they are but in response they all stomped back.On weekends they are playing loud music from 8 am until they feel like and these music vibrates in our flat, making our life miserable. We have the right to enjoy some peace in our property. I'm not against the neighbours to play their music, they should consider others,my husband went to speak (despite we are not too keen to speak to them as they dont look approachable) to them regarding the music because it was unbearable. The women answered the door,my husband asked her if they could lower their music as this is disturbing us,she said,"this is not loud for us n she doesn't care and slammed the door on my husband's face.We dont know what to do anymore as I did complaint to the management and nothing happened and they suggested to go to the noise environment.Since they moved in we are trying to adjust and compromise but sometimes it's too much.Once they had a birthday party and there were about 20 children running stomping above us from from 12 pm until 11pm.I couldn't bear it and went to sit outside. Now as we are in lockdown this is affecting us more as the noises are continues, it only stop when they go to sleep.I even feel bad for my husband as he is a key worker, he has to go to work and when he return home,he cant have some quiet time.

The same landlord owns four houses next to me, and will only rent to East Europeans, how he gets away with this I don't know, but there we are. He continues to allow large groups of mainly men in these houses, there are a few women. These houses aren't registered as HMOs. The people are noisy, selfish, inconsiderate and intimidating, they are all friends and they doss about in the front gardens playing loud bass music from one of their rusty old cars, or play traditional Romanian music in the back garden, at top volume, for hours on end. I dread weekends and public holidays when they are home all the time. Complained lots to the landlord who does nothing. Am currently keeping noise diaries for the council. I dread coming home from work in case they have music playing. Can't relax in the bath because I have to listen to their music. They don't give a toss about any other neighbours. The houses are disgusting hovels and they've really brought the area down. Sometimes I just want to end it all. Been like this for about eleven years, and every group of people who have ever lived in these houses are the same. Is it too much to ask to have quiet, respectful neighbours.

We are in North Berwick and have been having a torrid time with neighbours from hell. It began when we moved into our new home almost 2 years ago one side on from us moved in too. From outset it was hell on earth! They are made of straw, have nothing and act as if they've landed in paradise which, to them, it probably is especially when I see where they come from! They have proceeded to make out lives an utter misery at every given point and, despite having called the police on them on numerous occasions, they still do not stop. Their latest behaviour is rallying other neighbours against us to defer from what they really are - trailer trash. I have decided that this matter must now go to court to get a non-harassment order against them and would like to know if anyone here has had any experience of this in Scotland.

I have lived in my mid-terraced house for 21 years. Have a lovely neighbour one side but the side I am attached to the neighbours are a nightmare! It is a Council house and when I bought the house they neighbours were lovely. Over the years I have seen neighbours come and go and have only had to complain at the odd loud noise of a tv or radio. However, current neighbours (man and his teenage kids) moved in about 3 years ago and he is a DIY nut. He has ripped all the carpets up and put down laminate flooring. His kids are there on a weekend and just scream and slam doors and put music really loud (to a point I can put up with this). He has recently installed a 50inch tv on the party wall in the front bedroom and I have been round and complained about this and to be fair he has turned it down. Last weekend, he was doing someing in the bathroom and I had drilling and banging from 10am to 8pm. I had to go round and say that my middle daughter is very noise sensitive and for this not to go on too late. I undersatnd he works in the day and can only do things at night. He also dumps all his rubbish in the front garden and has recently spilt paint on the pavement (which my other neighbour complained about). I phoned the Council last year and explained the situation and they said they put it in their system. However, I spoke to him the day after makign the complaint about hte bass noise from the radio and this has now been sorted. I called Council back to say not to do anything further. My anxiety is awful, I have to sleep with ear plugs in and white noise. Its driving me to distraction. I have now decided to sell the house but worried no one will buy it and I will be stuck here forever!!

Moved into my flat 3 years ago below noisy neighbours. They are 7 people in a 2 bed flat housed by enfield council. I've complained to the council for years and finally the council told them to remove their floorboards and underneath they had tiles!!! Now I'm having to ask the council to ask them to put in carpets. They are the most uncivilized and selfish people. Thay sleep at 2 or 3 am. Dont work for years and disturb everyone else in the block. The neighbours dont like them at all but wont say anything as yet. The husband has been making passes at all the women and goes out every Saturday night and walks around at 5 am in his heeled boots instead of taking off his shoes.

The wife is some kind of crazy woman with no regard for any of the neigjbours screaming at her kids all day and night. The food stinks to high heaven and she cooks at 12 am.

Her kitchen is above my bedroom and she has no regard for us or the neighbours and gossip in there until 2 or 3 am. My poor kid gets nightmares because of the noise.

The house is an absolute tip and stinks so badly.

To top it all she has also let her eater leak into my bedroom 2x and damaged my bed.

The enfield council are useless and seem scared of her. Why she hadn't been served an abatement order and threatened w a fine I dont know.

I described my experience with hellish neighbours and realised there have been some messages left, how can I read the messages, and even though my story is quite long, what I left have been somewhat edited, whereby I cannot read the rest of the experience I shared, can someone help me please, on how to do this?!

I have lived at Patmore Estate for nearly 20 years with my brothers, and I have never had an issue with anyone. I suffer from Sickle Cell Disease and what I have been subjected to by these horrible families have nearly killed me in July of this year 2019!! My brothers moved out of the flat and got a place of their own. 4 years after that this Bangladeshi family moved in next door to me, and that is when my nightmare started. The man didn't like me for whatever reason, and he wanted me to be aware of this, which didn't bother me, until one day whilst going about my business, this same man pinned me against a wall, and pressed his chest against my breasts and pressed his penis against my genitals, and he did this for nearly 19 minutes before he let me go. It took me a year to report the incident to the Police ??, and when I did they didn't take Me seriously, in fact the Police made things worse. Since this incident nearly a year ago, this man has continued to intimidate me, harass me and stalk me around the Estate, by following me around, as if this wasn't had enough he has encouraged and brainwashed his wife, children, brother and relatives to mock me, threaten me, insult me, and try to attack me on numerous occasions: even though I have written to Wandsworth Council on 3 different occasions, all the complaints and issues I gave raised in these letters gave been ignored by the Council. And there are also 2 other families harassing me, bullying me, torturing and intimidating me, and every evil thing imaginable you can think of these Jamaican and Somali families have disrespected my mother, saying they will kill me, beat me up, and told me to go and get a man, just because I am single (which I don't think is anyone's business, and I am not single by choice, I have got a disability, which makes it hard for me to be in a relationship, but I don't really see, why these families in invested in whatever I do with my life!!).

For 1 year, this Somali woman, who used to be a good neighbour to me, just started being very horrible, along with her 3 daughters, who have told me to go and commit suicide, she and her daughters have tried on 4 different occasions to break into my flat, because this woman is a refugee, she believes she has the right to treat me anyway she likes, without any consequences, and since Wandsworth Council doesn't want to get involved, even though this has affected My health very badly this year 2019, it has deteriorated and I was on admission at the Hospital ?? ?? for 7-8 times this year 2019, which is a lot for a vulnerable woman who suffers from Sickle Cell Disease (Most of the admission into the Hospital ?? ?? I was either in for a week or sometimes, I was in the Hospital ?? ?? for 2 weeks, and I have had blood transfusions, high blood pressures, etc!). Now here is where it gets sinister, because my bedroom is next to the Somali woman's kitchen, and the walls are thin, anytime I am on my mobile ?? speaking to friends and f

We have lived in our beautiful property for 13 years, 10 of which were lovely....then we had new neighbours!!!!
They have 3 children who come home from school & all hell breaks loose till bedtime which can be up until 11pm
My fireplace vibrates with the noise!!!
The 18 month old has no bedtime & goes to sleep when the parents do, which can be midnight!!!
When I do go to bed the father keeps me awake snoring, it’s a nightmare!!!
They have 2 people carriers & have spent 40k on renovations.....but they don’t work????
Why should people be so inconsiderate???
I have contacted the council but they told me that if we put in a formal complaint should we decide to move we would have to tell prospective buyers that we have problem neighbours!!! It’s a joke!!!

I'd like to add to my previous post that the young couple bought their house and it is not rented. When i recently spoke to the police i was told its difficult as they are entitled to their life , but to keep reporting it as the address would be flagged up .

Also to add when i last spoke to anti social team 2 months ago i was told it appeared i had a vendetta towards my neighbours as it looked bad because no one else was writing in or phoning the police. You see im not scared of pumped up 25 year old childish men

Ive nevet had a vendetta towards anyone in my life !

I live in a mid terrace 35 years old. All of us in the row of 6 are over 60 all looked out for each other , lovely place to live , my home my sanctuary until 3.5 years ago a young couple moved in . I welcomed them as did the others . Within weeks anti social behavour began in the name of parties . They had stripped all carpets and the house had plastic floorboards , it is like a village hall acoustic . The place filled with foul mouthed drunken so called human beings . People vomiting under my bedroom window , people pissing in the garden against my fence . These went on from 6pm until 6am . I wrote a nice letter asking for consideration , it was ignored . Then i asked attached neighbours to my home to discusss and apart from one wno is on the other side of the wall no one would become involved . I contacted police who referred to anti social team and i kept logs . Each weekend or sometimes a few quiet weeks then all hell loose . During sunny bank holidays disgusting foul languge shouting at top of voices , sometimes the drink makes them aggressive . Anti social team wrote to them then phoned them and neighbours ignored it. Anti social team wrote and told me the case was closed . I still log each disgusting party for the future .

Last sunday morning at 6am yes 6am a huge bang then shouting yelling mens voices and the music " cotten eye joe" blaring out as they thumped and danced and banged the plastic wooden floor with wood or metal poles . It went on until 8.30am . Obviously they had been to a party and came home to continue. His wife is often there so she has no excuse . One neighbour watched from opposite and saw 7 blokes all in the bedroom looking inwards at something going on and i could hear one shouting " did ya f....k her, have ya fu...d her yet through my bedroom wall .

I hate these people , they have disturbed my life . The other 65 year old suffers too but he goes to stay at his mums . Hes to scared to say or do anything. I often go to sleep on my friends sofa .....im 70 years old for goodness sake .

WHAT CAN I DO

I live next door to the most inconsiderate, simple minded, thick as two short planks, low IQ and zero manners family. I bought my mid terrace house after a long slog (almost a decade) of saving. Single mum with two kids moved in 5 years ago. Then a stream of boyfriends, all of which took up residence in the house for a few months at a time, usually ending in late night screaming matches. The "forever" guy moved in two years ago and is a Diy nut. Diy pretty much every weekend morning for a good year and up until the new baby arrived, much of it taking place on the noisy wooden cladding he installed by their back door - just a few feet from my bedroom window. Constant hammering on the walls, kids screaming, and they also decided to take 'ownership' of the little green which sits across the road infront of the terrace - and teamed up with another chavvy family in doing so (the dad and mum sit half dressed on their doorstep smoking every warmish weather day). Toys and bikes and big tyres strewn across the now muddy grass. No peace in the summer - forget about sitting out in the garden. They do kareoke and play loud music at any given time. I have not sat down to read a book in my own home for the past few years. I'm on edge and cannot gain pleasure if there's a chance the peace will suddenly be disrupted by slamming doors or random banging of toys (I presume) against their hardwood floor and walls. As a single woman, it's too intimidating to approach them, and will probably do me no favours..... a) I tried a few years ago and she got her big burly thug of a boyfriend to answer the door (it's her council property) - noise improved for about a week, wash, rinse and repeat, b) I tried contacting the landlady and she hung up the phone on me, c) their best mates across the road will retaliate (I won't go into it but they have on my previous mild requests) and d) I just can't afford to have council noise issues on record when I do finally sell my house. I feel trapped but am being as stoical about it as possible - as I sit here with my heart pounding and nervous energy throughout my body, and the tv turned up (which I don't like but it is one way I drown out the noise sometimes). The constant banging is unbearable. If only landlords would at least NOT remove carpets and soft furnishings which lead to massive noise increase for the neighbours (these landlords who decide for their own selfish reasons to let a private home to a council mum and kids who clearly is playing the state). It's just awful. I feel for everyone who is in a similar position.

Used to live in tenement flats. The communal wooden doors going down to the main exit doors would get smashed up by neds roughly once a month. The main door would also bang so hard because it was magnetic that it would wake me from a sleep. Romanians would leave bags of rubbish instead of taking them down to the skip like everyone else. I woke up to a god awful noise one day, it was 2 feral kids on my roof tearing tiles off, no joke. Some kid used to play football at the top of the flats and kick the ball off metal railings that you'd never heard a noise this loud in your life, it would echo down the flats. Groups of neds would meet in the corridor stairs at the weekend of the 1st floor to play music bang on walls and leave a mess. I had to call the police for that one because they kept coming back.

New neighbours moved in in summer of 2017. They were nice at first giving presents and chatting then things turned nasty when they got builders in to do extension and loft conversion. They didn't want to pay for a surveyor under the Party Wall Act and the builders start work after 7.am daily instead of 8am. The neighbours park in my drive and front garden without asking and they always slam doors. They also want to buy my house!
AJ 19/11/2019 at 12:06 pm
I live in a semi detached house with an intergraded garage. My neighbour is obsessed with his drive!! he is retired and gets his car out every morning parks it right at the end of the drive and leaves it there all day making it hard for me to get on and off my driveway. He then reverses the car back into the garage at about half eleven at night slams the door shut waking me up. They are retired and bump about when they go to bed after midnight every night. There inconsiderateness is affecting my mental health I am tired all the time from disturbed sleep and now dread going to bed as I know I will be woken up or kept awake by their thoughtlessness. They both have mental health problems and although I tried to talk to them deny making any noise and continue. I like my home and the other neighbours are fine but I am getting to the stage where I think I may have to sell up and move which I do not want to do as I am close to my elderly mother who needs care. I have chronic tinnitus and have to wear earplugs which makes the sounds in my head worse. I feel like I am cracking up due to sleep depravation I don't know what to do

I truly feel so sorry for all the folk on here having to deal with the stress and anxiety caused by people that we have the misfortune to live next door to . Sending positive vibes to you all . Reading your experiences makes me feel I am in a way lucky to not have as bad a time as you. But we are all affected in some way . That’s the common thread here . I live alone and have lived in my home for 21 years, 19 of which perfectly happily . Until the ‘family’ moved in next door - semi detached so we share very thin walls. Young couple with 3 kids under aged 6 , 2 huge dogs , and no consideration for the property or anyone else . Her mother bought the house cash for them as I presume they were either evicted from previous properties or just have no money . The once cared for garden is now a tip filled with rubbish . I am woken every morning (despite wearing earplugs) by dogs barking kids screaming them shouting and banging every door ,cupboard ,wall . At the weekends this goes on for hours . The walls are so thin I have installed sound proof boards but to no avail . If they go out the dogs howl intermittently. One thing I am grateful for is that they do not play loud music .i have developed anxiety over it and am now noise sensitive. Even a door banging sets me on edge . I have spoken to them about it and was told to f off! Now I avoid parking my car out front in case I bump into them. I am scared to report to any authority as it appears nothing is done and would make things worse . I am thinking of moving . I just hope some karma comes the way of these people who affect the lives of so many of us .

Had a noisy neighbour move in to council maisonette below me. Problems with loud music started 3 and a half years ago, and after 6 months a nosie abatement noticve was put in place. Unfortunately it wasn't adhered to, with an all night party being the peak of the many following issues.
Eventually the noise did calm down slightly, but by then the damage was already done. I suffer massive anxiety and depression, knowing that this can kick off again at any moment.
My GP wroted to the council in 2017 because of the adverse effect on my health, but nothing has been done about it since.
Intermittent noise issues have recurred and I have also been subjected to targeted anti-social behaviour.
I called on the council again, but they have fobbed me off, suggesting I can "take my own action," and that I need "independent evidence," which is impossible to get as they never send anyone out.
I suffer social phobia, so my home was my only safe place. I have had that taken away. I really am at my wits end as the anxiety is so extreme. Just don't think I can carry on with it much longer.

We live in a residential area and when we moved there it was relatively quiet. Unfortunately for us that came to an abrupt end when new neighbours arrived. They have been building a kitchen extension for a year now and the noise has been absolutely horrendous to the point that our house has been vibrating oh and our ceiling in dining room collapsed. Time off during school holidays -forget it. Having a peaceful weekend -forget it. Studying for A levels - forget it. The culprit or diy Dave as we like to call him must have a drill permanently attached to his arm. They have had parties in their garden for 10 to 12 hours at a time with music blasting. Don't think about politely asking them at 12.15am to turn it down as your son can't sleep. Completely oblivious to anyone else, they turned the music up and carried on.
Their last party finished in garden at 5.00am Sunday with all of 3 hours sleep for us. Is it just me or is there just too little help out there for dealing with nightmare neighbours. Also what is it with the continued desire to create the so called 'perfect house' by any means possible. Bring back the seventies - we just used gardens as gardens and only did diy if we had to and with much more thought, grace
and courteous behaviour at that!

Live in a semi detached. Neighbours in there late 40 early 50. Have 3 year old. Confined to living room from 7am to 8pm. Noise consists of loud footsteps, banging, clattering of toys off the wooden floorboards, kid screaming, parents screaming, lot of Peppa pig. Parents not in, granny day care in there 80 in, a bit deaf, they are shouting. I never get a lie in on my days off or that quiet switch off time. Went to their door, police was called. I went to noise police. Outcome the neighbour responded he’s a family man doing family activities. Now am I need to put my music / tv up to drown the noise. One of the neighbour verbal abuse me and bangs thru. Reported to police, they said both are home owners and I need concert evidence, Like it’s ok for them to make noise but not for me, i have tried to record the noise but it all fussy.

Nightmare neighbours in HMO Chitterfield Gate, Sipson - who are daily constantly playing really loud music, screeching down a personal address system/ karaoke machine, shouting, screaming, smashing bottles - nothing is ever done about the drunken bums.

Neighbours next door to our semi have always been very vocal and noisy- let it go for the past 4/5 ,years as we know the daughter has metal health problems. I believe she is now 17.
The noise of late is awful.
They have 2 dogs that yap all the time. The mother doesnt seem to be able to communicate without shouting and the girl's groaning and moaning sounds are so loud and go on for hours .
I've tried to speak to them with regards to the mothers shouting and the dogs barking which calmed down for a while but has started up again. Ive never made any comment about the daughters noise as I know she is disabled, but when I tried to talk to her about the excussive noise she just states ' I've a sick child in here! We have rights'
What about my rights- I've worked hard for my home and have sunk all my savings into it- moving is not an option ?
I'm coming to the end of my tether- I'm not a violent person but I could happily snack her one.

Neighbour R had trashed and abandoned the property. The lower glass panel of my communal door had been smashed and boarded up.

Long story short, the council workers tasked to clean up the damage had to contact the housing department for help. They hadn't seen anything like it. Furthermore, the housing department had lost track of Neighbour R and asked me if I'd seen him.

Four days after resettling into my flat, the trouble with Neighbour L began in September 2016. I've had to put up with loud music after 11 pm all year round - even at Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The same half a dozen songs are played up to 3 times each until 5 or 6 am. He also sings out loud.

Neighbour L has also damaged his communal door. Reinforced doors had to be installed but it didn't solve anything. The frequent door slamming and domestics carried on with him. He also owns two dogs that bark at set times and scratch the wall. He also brought a motorcycle indoors and revved the engine after 11 pm.

I've complained twice to the local council but they've shown lack of accountability for their poor treatment and slow response. (Too much crazy making to discuss. I had to seek legal action twice to glean any info from them.) I've dealt with my local councilor and also contacted the local newspaper. Despite all of that, the council kept making circular arguments and phone calls. One council staff member said that their downplaying of the antisocial behaviour was 'in my head.' Despite an explanation to my lawyer that Neighbour L's music would only affect people living directly below (Which is ridiculous because I'm directly adjacent and below via a shared wall and within a 12 foot radius of their communal door. )

Since September 2016, the environmental health team came out 6 times. The antisocial behaviour still exists but not as bad now. There's a lot that I haven't written about. The prolongued stress has given me face/scalp ecsema, blepharitis, weakened eyesight, muscle tension/lower back pain/sciatica, anxiety nightmares, poor concentration. I've had to adjust my life/diet/travel plans to cope. I can't cope with certain activities anymore. I feel let down by the local authorities who prefer to harass innocent people instead of the troublemakers.
Argus 13/06/2019 at 11:36 pm
For the last two years and nine months I've dealt with noisy neighbours. There were three of them who lived on either side of my ground floor flat. For the sake of ease, let's call them Neighbour R, Neighbour L and Neighbour W.

Neighbour R lived directly across from me. In March 2016, Neighbour L visited Neighbour R. He left the property with a cut hand and smeared it down the side of the communal door. He was really angry. Neighbour R's girlfriend persuaded him to go back inside. He reluctantly agreed and took his frustration out on a door.

Later that day, Neighbour R had several arguments with his girlfriend that spilled out into the communal area outside my front door. Then, Neighbour L returned late at night with a group of guys. Neighbour R accused Neighbour L of calling the police two or three times. Neighbour R then accused th e lady upstairs and had to be restrained from banging on her door.

Between March and August 2016 I had to suffer domestic arguments, frequent communal door slamming after 11 pm, frequent door slamming that increased to all hours of the day and night, a debt collector who threatened Neighbour R up against my front door, suspected late night drug dealing and a 6 am drug overdose. Also... Neighbour L had told Neighbour R to stay away from him and he punched the glass out of Neighbour R's front door.

Neighbour W had a habit of playing loud music at night. His dog would bark loudly too. He was given an ASBO but still hung out with Neighbour R and L.

I reported the noise disturbances to the police and the local council's environmental health team. The plan was to give Neighbour R an ASBO. However the local council's environmental health team switched the goal posts after three months of noise complaints. They told me that they wanted to evict Neighbour R. He wouldn't be given an ASBO but told me to keep reporting noise.

Over a five month period, I experienced gaslighting and poor treatment from the council and police. Neighbour R was treated more favorablely than me. One police officer actually said that there was no pattern. When the police left, the antisocial behaviour continued.

In mid August, I was forced to leave my flat because of sleep deprivation and chronic anxiety. I'd had enough of the antisocial behaviour and poor treatment from the authorities.

Prior to leaving my flat, I overheard a conversation with Neighbour R. Neighbour L had already gone to prison for causing trouble at a local bar. Neighbour R was looking after Neighbour L 's flat for some reason. (After Neighbour L had threatened him to stay away.) The only problem? Neighbour R had been stealing his stuff and left the flat in a mess. I saw Neighbour R come in with a widescreen telly one night. Neighbour L had somehow found out, was fighting in prison, and threatened to hunt Neighbour R down.

People on the recieving end of these vile incosiderate people need serious help because are lives are being destroyed.I contacted the landord of the loads of people who live and visit the the property next door to me (not joined) to explain the many problems eg swearing horrible high pitched shouting ,damaged fencing due to retreiving ball off my garden, abuse etc. His response was to call the police. What can i do i live in private property. This has me in a stalemate situation. No one to get them to alter their ways and cant sell because they have devalued my property.
Is the next step to expose to the media ? As they are directors of high end care homes.(information i sourced from GOV.UK )

WitsEnd: great post? Your point about TV shows such as 'Neighbours from Hell' is well stated. When people's lives and suffering is offered up to the public as 'entertainment', what chance do we stand as victims of this soul destroying and selfish behaviour! I have always tried to be the best neighbour I can, being upstairs in a cottage flat, I'm hyper sensitive to the noise I make, especially after 7pm, so our house rules include no footwear inside, no washing machine after tea time, no loud music or TV etc. A little bit of consideration goes a long way! Mind you, there's just no way to get through to a certain class of neighbour! There ought to be special tower blocks at the edge of the city to stick all the A-holes in together and let them fight it out amongst themselves!
WitsEnd 17/04/2019 at 8:01 pm
I feel for each and every person on here who is so hugely damaged by the behaviour of problem neighbours. Every comment I read seems to say 'It is making me ill.' 'I am so depressed.' 'It is destroying my life.' 'People don't understand.' Me too. I have been subjected to appalling DIY building noise, over-filling their garden with buildings, accompanied by loud music, shouting, 'singing', screaming and much bullying, harassment and criminal damage to my property every day for the last six years. I feel that I have had my peaceful retirement stolen from me. It has largely destroyed me.
I have been to the Council to complain. The Council have done nothing but pass me on to someone else, who passes me on to someone else still. I have been pushed from pillar to post, from officer to officer, from Head of Department to Director, from Councillor to M.P., from Information Commissioner to Ombudsman, from Ombudsman back to Council and NONE of them has ever done a single thing to make this stop. Please do not have any faith in the laws which were originally designed to protect us from these kinds of things. Councils have found sly ways round them. They have made the legislation toothless. As an example, I applied for a copy of a report on the building situation under the Freedom of Information Act. The Council jumped through hoops of fire to deny me this information and managed to find case law which allowed them to wriggle out of giving me a copy. I believe the way forward is publicity in the media. Councils need to be shamed into protecting THE VICTIMS. This is destroying lives. Everyone thinks it's very funny to watch 'Neighbours From Hell'. I would like to know what is so funny about people being driven to the point of suicide? If any other problem was leading to suicide government would sit up and take note. This is a national problem. If anyone on here wants to join with me in forming a pressure group to make the law work in the favour of THE VICTIMS, put a stop to Councils/police dodging their responsibilities and make them stop these vile, bullying neighbours from causing ruined lives and sometimes deaths, make them sort it or be heavily fined, then say so in this comments section and I'll try to get to talk with the owners of this website about it.

i have been living in my new house for 4 months , everything seemed fine with the neighbours they are very chatty and friendly cant fault that, but she started taking the piss getting partner to do things in her house as shes on her own with her daughter odd jobs no payment was offerd so we stoped doing things like that as she kept knocking on our door at all sorts of times night and day, also asking us for money to pay her rent which we refused!
since the winter has come her door has "swollen" (her words) and it does stick when closing but no need to slam it everytime. its been waking my daughter up from her naps and at night as shes in and out all the time. i have told her that it keeps waking my daughter up and could she contact her landlord to least have a look at it but she says he wont. but she told me she owes him money for rent so i dont think she has even told him about it.
its now affecting our door where she is slaming it as hard as she can everytime its opened. so my landlord is getting us a new door.

its really annoying me now and she is not doing anything about it. is contacting her landlord a good idea to at least tell him about this.
with all this she is playing loud music as she pulls on her drive and beeping her car horn for ages to get her daughter to come out and great her. im just so helpless right now

I have been renting a single bed flat from metropolitan Thames Valley housing since 2001. There are numerous faults in here and the one that causes me the most problem is the inadequate noise blocking material. As a result of that it is impossible for me to enjoy some peace because all the noise that comes from my neighbour can be heard. It is always worse at night and at the weekends when the relatives Come round with their children who proceed to run around for long periods of time. The sound of their feet travels up to my flat and I feel really fed up and increasingly angry. My landlord is quite frankly useless and has not done much to help me. My health is suffering and I am very unhappy. I wonder if I could bring a case against my landlord for failing to build a flat that is adequately sound proofed?

I have huge problems with the neighbours upstairs. Single mother with out of control 13 year old son and a boyfriend many years younger than her also out of control and his friends. Banging shouting stamping on the floor. She leaves the 13 year old home alone a lot. With his mates and an Xbox right above my bed. Numerous complaints to their landlord. No change so I've emailed my landlord see if they can do anything. Am anxious and tense after knocking on their door to complain about the noise and getting threatened followed by having my front door kicked several times. Police have been involved. Now hate living here it's making me ill

Dufresne - Your Question:
I have issues with my neighbours' kids (aged 10-12) swearing - I have three kids aged 9, 3 and 18months and don't think they should be subjected to such language. I've had several conversations each summer with the parents but nothing seems to change. Any suggestions?
Our Response:
This could be considered a statutory nuisance and your environmental health department might be able to take action. If they can't/won't, then you can complain directly to the Magistrates Court under section 82 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The Magistrates Court will need to be persuaded that the nuisance problem amounts to a statutory nuisance. South Gloucester Council has a good guide here.
LOL THIS SITE IS SO FULL OF CR*P IT'S HARD TO TAKE SERIOUSLY.
Swearing in it's self is not a matter for Environmental Protection nor is it a crime or a civil offence (at any age), you have no right to NOT be offended and in law no word itself has any recognised legal standing over another. This site is encouraging you to waste your time.

Hi, I too have Somalian family next door with their 5 kids. I also suspect the children all school age, are being left in the house alone at night.
They don't seem to be capable of normal communication, everything is yelling, shouting, slamming the internal doors, the kids are constantly screaming, jumping on the floor, scraping furniture, the TV is on full blast in the evening's till the early hours. Also, the boy kicks a football in the room next to my living room, and constantly bangs on the wall.
They also leave bags of rubbish for days outside their front door till foxes come and rip the bags up.
I'm at my wits end with this, its getting me down and affecting my quality of life. I can't enjoy my evenings and weekends anymore. I contacted environment health, all they said is it's children playing and they can't do anything.
I don't mind children playing but this is excessive, unnecessary noise. It's like living in a zoo! Please don't say 'move', I can't afford to right now.

I have a a Somalian neighbour on my left hand side of my terraced house. Ever since they moved in I have had issues with noise. They have groups of people in the room at all times shouting, talking, laughing loudly. If I understood Somalian I could write a script. My young child and I just want to sleep but these loafers have no respect. I have complained and mentioned it several times. I'm at the end of my tether. Finally I complained to the noise abatement department today. I could cry with frustration. Please someone help.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/03/2018 at 11:43 am
Do you rent? You could try asking your landlord to have a word. It's unlikely environmental health services will be able to take action over this.

I live on the ground floor flat. Above me lives family with 6 years old daughter. Every day she jumps and runs around the flat. You'd think it is general noise but it is so loud that when she jumps my lamp swings. I spoke to them couple of times but they are pretty aggressive and always shouts. The noise happens between 16.00 - 20.00.

My neighbours have recently moved into the flat next door to me and have a new born. They have stripped bare floorboards and we can hear them stomping around and dragging their funiture along the bare floors - which makes my hairs stand up on the back of my neck. In addition, they have a baby monitor!! So the back bedroom is the main bedroom where they and their baby sleep - as do we as the flat set up is pretty similar - and they have the baby monitor set up in the living room on full blast, which is the furthest point away from the back bedroom covering the entire length of the property. The crying is so bad as we can hear the crying from the bedroom whilst in the living room (the baby monitor is not needed!) then 2 seconds later we hear the crying again but amplified through the baby monitor. You cannot go into any one room for peace. In addition, they have a creaky bedroom door that slams into the party wall and keeps me awake until someone mornings 4am!! We can clearly hear the door creaking and banging into the party wall so surely they can also. We have already had to write to them asking if they would mind turning their music down when they first moved in, as they had a habit of playing their music at an unreasonable level which they have now stopped. It is a shame that these further nuisances have since come into existence AFTER we had sent them a letter otherwise I would have included them. What should I do as I do not want to be seen as harressing them, but some nights it’s so bad that I have to sleep on the sofa. I cannot continue like this.

Hi, I have had severe problems with my old neighbours having parties 7nights a week and complained to the council and was threatened by the neighbours so I didn’t complain again. I put up with this for 7years and it’s destroyed my mental health as I’ve also had several bereavements and severe sleep deprivation and it’s also created other severe health problems. Now I’ve moved and I have another neighbour who is a problem. I have only been here a month and with all the stress over the years and recent stress pressure to move I have had 2 Arguments with a friend in my flat. The neighbours above now are eavesdropping 24/7 and telling all my neighbours all my business. I have no privacy. The walls and ceilings are so thin, they can hear when I’m phoning the bank, doctors and talking to friends in flat or on phone. Their bedroom is above my living room and they constantly eavesdrop and when my friends leave my flat they go and tell the other neighbours everything that’s said. The reason I know this is because I can hear them come into the room every time I speak on the phone or my friends come in. They stay in the room and leave within minutes after I’ve stopped talking if I’m on the phone and also leave there room when my friends leave my flat. Then I hear them going to the neighbours door and they are there for about 15minutes and go back to there flat. Also I’ve never spoken to them above as we haven’t met yet. But the neighbours who I had spoken to who were nice are now shunning me. The person above me is a snob who owns all the upper floors. I’m just renting from a friend and I’m poor and they are all rich. The two arguments I had was about how my mental health has severely deteriorated and how suicidal I am. The neighbour above me did make a comment outside my front door after I accidentally switched my outside door light off. She implied I done it deliberately. I didn’t. I was very busy and severely stressed out and I was turning things off in a rush as I knew I hardly had enough electricity for a shower and was going in for a shower. I just starting switching everything of in my flat so I could shower. I then heard what she said and how bad she was making me out to be and I came out shower and switched it on. This person is fault finding and my mental health can’t handle it. I just want peace from constant eavesdropping and also PRIVACY. If this eavesdropping and defamation of character persists what can I do? I regret having those arguments and them knowing my mental health but they are going to the extreme with taking a severe interest in me constantly and they are early retired so are home 24/7. They don’t play music or make noise other than attitude or footsteps in the room above which is there bedroom above my living room. I can’t watch tv past 10pm as I hear moaning if I have the Rev on with the sound at 4 meaning I can’t hear Tv and have to watch subtitles and I can barely hear tv. I smoke cigarettes and when I light a cigarette I hear

If your neighbour is refusing, you can try an alternate dispute resolution service such as mediation or you may be forced to pursue it via the legal system.

follow up to the reply about Environmental Health: they tell me there is no definition of 'nuisance' in law, it is down to the opinion of the officer handling the complaint. They tell me that opinion is formed by previous case law, but will not tell me what the case law is. It appears they never test the law by trying for a precedent, only by following previous cases which they will not describe. In every Ombudsman decision on the LGO website concerning Environmental Health the Ombudsman says she cannot tell EH whether or not they should have issued an Abatement Notice, as it is down to their opinion based on case law. Even if the Ombudsman does find fault with the way EH have investigated and makes a recommendation, she has no power of enforcement and the council is free to ignore her recommendation. I know this because it happened to me 2 years ago in a different complaint against a different council and I lost thousands of pounds because the council refused to follow the Ombudsman's recommendation, and the Ombudsman advised that if I did not agree with the council's compromise, she could not do anything further to force them to accept her recommendation.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 22/03/2017 at 2:26 pm
If the TV is at a high volume and is disturbing neighbours, that should be sufficient for the EHO to investigate. Your have to comply with their procedure (e.g agree to have a monitor installed) if that's what is required. If you feel Environmental Health is not doing its job properly (i.e not issuing abatement notices where they are applicable) then your should complain the local governement ombudsman.
Mary.M 19/03/2017 at 11:39 pm
I live next door to an elderly deaf woman who likes to watch TV all day and sometimes all night at high volume. Social Services have given her headphones which she won't use, and asked her not to turn the TV up above 40 on the volume scale, which she ignores. Our local Environmental Health Service didn't issue a single Abatement Notice last year in spite of receiving over 400 domestic noise complaints. I didn't have a noise monitor installed because of that, seemed like a foregone conclusion and a waste of time. My GP sent a letter saying the noise is 'prejudicial to health', they say 'case law suggests' it is not a statutory nuisance. It seems the EH people just say there is no case law to support anything, and as we all know, you can't prove a negative so I can't challenge them. Is there any case law that does support 'noise prejudicial to health' as a statutory nuisance? Last week her TV started up at 06.20 and the week before it was on from 01.30 to after 04.00 so I also asked EHS about night noise under the Noise Act but they didn't reply.

I am at my wits end with my neighbour she has destroyed my life & she has become the only person in my 55 years on the planet that I hate. If the word chav was invented for anybody it was surely for her. How anybody can have no self awareness especially as she has two young daughters is beyond me. The council tell me it is normal noise; probably is if you take cocaine & drink but I don't you see; I just sit in fear waiting for my life back or my death & praying I make it out of this nightmare. Unless people have experienced this they have no idea & if I do get through I want to set up a help group for people as bad neighbours destroy lives.

Hi
I have complained to Sandwell council and have had noise monitoring equipment Installed relating to noise nuisance over 2 weeks. A letter was also posted through to the door of the neighbours advising them they were going to be recorded. The noise for the time the machine was installed was quieter than what they usually deliver. After the equipment was taken i was advised that I am sensitive to the noise and I should expect to hear noise. I have been living on this estate 9 yrs and I have not experienced sleepless nights and disruption like this ever. I am now fighting to sleep and fighting to get to work so that I can function. The council have basically minimalised what is happening based entirely on the recordings of 2 weeks, despite the problem occurring for 18 months. Am I entitled to pay someone and install noise equipment with a view to going to court? I also feel that Sandwell council should be held accountable for the consequences of their policy on housing people. There is no rigorous thought about how people are being housed and whether the properties are fit for the purpose they are being used. It is a one bedroom flat maisonette. They work from home at unsociable hours ( I have been advised by Sandwell council they can't stop people working unsociable hours even if it's affecting me.) They are young, not going out to work and have an adult son also living with them who has advised me he and his mothers partner are the carers. There are no physical disabilities. My rights to live here have been thrown out the
window . In addition there have been a huge amount of other problems with neighbours taking sides and i being singled out. I work whereas a lot of them have all day to spend on this. I have been advised that I am asking the council to make them homeless whereas the fact that I may have to sell up is not a factor.

We have lived in the same house for over 12 ywats and had no issues with our next door eights however since a few months ago a new women an her two kids moved in since then it's been a nightmare.nothing but loud banging noises all day and right the way through to the night that it's waking me up.... constant shouting and screaming.. summer was the worse had the windows wide open with music on and loudness right the way til 3 in the morning on a weekday when I had to get up for work, we do confront her about this an it still continued so we contacted the local council who issued a letter... after that stopped and then out of know where we had police knocking the door questioning us about her behaviour and the welfare of the kids and from then we noticed she wasn't at the property for a few weeks. Now she is back and We are back to square one again loud banging at 11 in the night and the doors being slammed and this carries on right the way through the night. I am at my wits end and do not know what to do I can't sleep because my bedroom is right next door and it doesn't help I'm 3 months pregnant aswell

Unfortunately housing legislation places this duty on local authorities. The Housing (Homeless Persons) Act 1977, Housing Act 1996, and the Homelessness Act 2002, places statutory duties on local housing authorities to ensure that advice and assistance to households who are homeless or threatened with homelessness is available free of charge. A ‘main homelessness duty’ is owed where the authority is satisfied that the applicant is eligible for assistance, unintentionally homeless and falls within a specified priority need group. Where a main duty is owed, the authority must ensure that suitable accommodation is available for the applicant and his or her household.

Why do some councils waste time serving an abatment notice then evicting the culprits etc and then rehousing them somewhere else for some other poor souls to suffer it all over again ? !

Contact your planning department, there is a chance that the property is unsuitable for renting out and your neighbour is doing this illegally.

Our neighbours recently converted their garage into a habitable area so they told us. A week after completion they moved a couple into the conversion which has a kitchen and wraps around to a living space and shower room which were already in the house before they converted the remainder of the garage (we have a garage which runs full length of house and most houses convert the back end and leave the front) since then we basically now live in a terraced house rather than linked detached and the couple are so noisy. Banging on walls, scraping chairs etc. we are not the quietest family but feel that through no fault of our own we have a nightmare now as have to hear noises which were never there before as was a garage. We are not sure what to do as think they have not declared this living space, not sure about ventilation for the kitchen and have to deal with excessive noise. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have been in my property for 9 nearly ten years and the neighbours nearly as long. 3 members of the family have hearing problems they barley leave the house and worst of all leave 2 sometimes 3 televisions playing all night long. They are not excessively loud but they are loud enough that I can pick up what is actually playing on the TVs. I zone in and out from the different channels all night long. I have a 19 yr old daughter who moved out 18 months ago as she is studying and also could not get any peace in her home. I usually end up getting about 3-4 hrs sleep a night and am absolutely exhausted. Their is 4 people in the household but when the rest of the family are there wow it's unbearable. Two 20 somethings with autism who are unable to speak at any other level than fog horn level. It has completely ruined my life, I've started making errors at work which I have worked hard for. I have a 4 yr old daughter who is overweight and overly tired when she stays here at home. so unfortunately I get family to have her overnight. I'm very concerned as she starts school in September. My life has been completely destroyed, I don't see friends or family as I should. Not carrying out all my responsibilities each day!
I have been working with the council on and off over the years and not once has anybody been round to the neighbours just to say we are concerned about the family next doors health, and the TVs loud voices and banging doors is seriously depriving them of sleep!! Please turn your TVs down or get them removed. What the hell, they state they need evidence. As someone mentioned I've had the recording equipment put in twice and each time they have told me the noise is me! I am no liar and know a million percent that i recorded when I was silent. They also tell me the noise isn't loud enough. Surely that is subjective as to what everybody can deal with is different and I can no longer listen to 2-3 TVs anymore all night! I really need proper sleep to deal with life daily.
The worst of it the council told me over the phone that they believe I am depressed after speaking to mental health professionals, I am a nurse also, I told him from the council of course I am. This situation and dealing with it alone sucked any life out of me years ago. Honestly I am absolutely disgraced that hardworking citizens like me, working two jobs supporting my children's study, paying my bills goodness I even work in healthcare. Can't get any support with this. I feel like ultimately my body will fail me I've already blacked out twice from exhaustion, have no appetite or quality of life at all. Then the council will have to rehome me and my children as I will no longer have a job, be able to pay bills or support us. The family next door get everything paid for they have disability scooters and other support all good so why can they not get some hearing aids sorted. So much more to add. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone out there knows what I can do abo

hi
im having a nightmare at the moment ,
i had lived in my previous property for 16 years and decided i wanted to move to a more rural part of the country so i managed to get a housing assosication house ,

ive been here just a month and already have had run ins with 2 neighbours ,
the first one we asked if the man (2 doors up) could move his car up a bit for me to get mine in and he went into a vicious tirade of abuse threatening my partner to fight etc ,
i had to call the police and they had a word with him (apparantly he is known by the police) ,

ive only just come around after that then our next door neighbour a elderly gentleman banged on our door at 11pm saying to "turn the music off" , looking puzzled as i was watching TV
but i turned it off , then today i had to sit and listen to him knocking on EVERY neighbours door slagging us off about the noise of music (it hadnt occured to me that people might hear the tv as my window was wide open)
then he banged on our door about 5pm and my partner had to listen to a lecture about the laws on noise , i went to the front door and offered he come in to discuss it but he flatly refused ,
we then realised he was doing it to show the neighbours what he was doing ,
it was so humiliating , i wrote him a note tonight saying that as he didnt give me a chance to explain i would do so in a letter and told him that id had trouble sleeping as my mother is dying of cancer and im up worrying and had no idea the tv was loud ,
and why would he do that to my partner on the street especially after he had just seen him in the back garden and said "HELLO" ,

i just feel so isolated now i cant stop crying i came here for a fresh start but now all the neighbours think we are bad people

what can i do
PLEASE ADVISE ME i really need help

My adjoining neighbours are having a lot of building work done on their property. I except that there will be a lot of disturbance. I feel it's unfair that they start hammering and banging at 8.45 on a Saturday morning. We've have spoken to them about it as we have adults who work nights. They say the right things but carry on anyway. Is there anything I can do?

I have had the same problem for 26yrs now I live in housing accommodation I have made numarous complaints have had 2abso out on the family but still nothing is being done they are now on their 3rd party in a month with people in the garden and also people out in front of the house children running all over the place sometimes these party's end up with fights the problem is that they have friends in the housing department and are told when there is a complaint against them. The housing put a box in so that the housing could record the noise we only had it a week guess what they never made a sound when it was in but as soon as it was taken out the noise was started up again also because I have complained they bang on the walls slam doors
ProblemNeighbours Editor 21/06/2016 at 12:01 pm
Give the environmental health dept a ring to see if there's any progress with your complaint?
Tired and emotional 20/06/2016 at 12:50 pm
We have the same problem with our neighbours, but it's on a daily basis and its driving us crazy. After approaching them about their music on several occasions we were last greets with abuse, so we had to put in a complaint about noise nuisance. Our diary has been going on now for 4 months and it's getting no better. We haven't heard from the council about the reply we sent to them with the noise diary but the neighbours are getting worse and worse with their noise to the extent they are now banging on walls and being as loud as they can. It seems that no matter what you do some people just don't care whether they are impacting people's lives at all.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 16/03/2016 at 10:01 am
We assume if you've only received a summons that you have not yet had court date. There are many wood burning stove users in the UK and you appear to have carried out the installation properly and gone to great length to ensure it doesn't affect your neighbours unduly. We cannot advise on whether to appeal or not however as we do not have all the facts.
Jo 15/03/2016 at 6:36 am
Hello we installed a wood burner all defra approved since then we have had our neighbours complaining to the environment about smoke and smell in there house which is 40 ft away
From our chimmy ,
The stove was installed by a hetas installer so it is all legal .
We live on the seafront and yes we sometimes have very strong winds
So at the environmental officers suggestion we started taking logs of the wind direction
Speed ect and at the times the winds wer in our neibours direction we only burnt smokeless
Fuel and for most of the time kept the fire banked down
We hoped this would help the situation but our neibours are now saying the smokeless fule is
Giving of a horrible smell ,
The fule we are using is also defra approved and our logs are well seasoned as the officer
Told us when he visited us ,
However as none of the above have worked we have now been issued with a summons which we can appeal ,
We really don't think this is fair as we have done everything th environment officer suggested
And as we pointed out to her how can she summons us when she has only visited the house
Once and on that day she did smell smoke ,
Another officer also visited once and said that he could smell a little smoke in the toilet
Where the window was left open but did leave us saying he did not consider us a statuary nuisance ,which he is now saying he's not sure if that's what he said
Also yesterday the officer was going to our neighbours after visiting us to discuss ours and their logs that we had both kept ,we had lit our fire to show her and at her own addmitence
She said she knew that there wouldn't be a smoke smell in the neighbours today as the winds wer in the wrong direction
Our neighbours have written things like walked to the gate on our way to a hospital
Appointment smelt smoke at the gate which made us cough
When we asked the officer how we can be served a notice for her visiting just one time
She said it's because the neighbours have kept a log ,
We feel after all our efforts we are in a no win situation
We have contacted the solid fuel advisory plus defra who all say they can't see what the
Problem is ,
Do you think this is worth taking to appeal,
Would be grateful for any help as we have to appeal by Friday
Regards jo walker

Lived in tower block for 17 years 10 as leaseholder. Lost some 5 jobs due to antics of ethnic neighbours noise and intimidation. Social housing landlord went through motions and environmental health waste of time. Had to move out but with sanity now intact.
No triple sound insulation. You need responsible people to live in tower blocks not socially challenged individuals

If it is for essential repairs and the neighbours do not consent, you may have seek action via the courts for a decision.

I have an old warehouse and need to replace the roof as it is 50 years old! I have written to the two neighbouring properties to inform them of my plans, which would include erecting a scaffold on their gardens for a period of 2 / 3 weeks! The two properties have replied to my letter stating that under no circumstances am I to enter their properties, this has actually been written by their solicitor! could you please advice if I have rights to carryout the works discussed via the correct procedure please?

Sometimes I wonder if there is any point in living in separate flats because it feels like you're living with the people below you and above you to the the side of you ,I live in a flat in North London but the lady in the flat below me likes to use her washing machine late at night after 9pm and the spin cycle is so loud it's like the washing machine is next to me. I've knocked on the door and complain to them and wrote letters to the council but it never works because as soon as I make the tiniest bit of noise it justifies their situation to make noise and noise cannot be helped if you doing some Diy in the daytime, But even without heavy noise I can hear and feel the vibrations of snoring below me all night long which is like Japanese water torture, however it's better then the neighbours before them who used to put the music on all all the time . As much as I'm angry with them, I know the root of the problem is poorly make properties in the UK in Germany they don't have this problem to the same extent as the UK Because they use triple layered soundproofing material in their buildings this does cost money for the builders but I bet it as saved a lot of arguments and paperwork over noise, yes Britain is supposed to have Some kind of building regulations since 2002 over noise pollution, But I think difference is the attitude in Britain here it's all about short-term profits as they say in building let's make it quick lets make it cheap and sell it for as much as possible. Are we building a country of long-term residents with happy living situations? No real perfection when it comes to building flats for the working class people, Britain is not building for the future it's all about short term profits. Sad because this as make people's living situations unhappy for the noise receiver and the noise giver

We live in a flat and have 3 neighbours, next door, above and below, we had loud music thumping through our bedroom wall from 9pm-3am, the guy next door was unemployed and depressed, had his mates round smoking weed which would filter into our flat, I knocked on his door, this achieved nothing, he would apologise but do nothing, eventually he wouldn't open the door, I had a new born, we called police was told to call asb, who told us it was a police matter, I told them we'd already rung them but she said they don't deal with noise nuisance at weekends, eventually he died through alcohol abuse, we got a new neighbour, slightly better, no loud music but she slams her front door and then it sounds like fort Knox with all the chains and bolts she secures it with, she puts all rubbish in pink sacks not black so they get left by binmen and strewn everywhere but she leaves them in the stairwell for a while and it stinks.
Our downstairs neighbours we complained to asb department, they said we needed to keep a 3 month diary, their dogs bark all the time they're out, they slam every door they come across which rocks our flat, they do hammering and play loud tv until late, they shout at each other but with the doors open so the whole street can hear!
Basically I live in a neighbourhood of morons that gives council estates their bad name, I'd move if I could afford it but house prices are too dear for us to get a mortgage, if the council were more severe or even took a bit of notice many of these problems would be resolved, we personally don't want to confront our neighbours for fear of repercussions like our car being vandalised etc, we need people to have a bit pride in their community and consideration for each other, I only hope that we get moved into a 2 bed soon and have neighbours with a sense of decency and respect...I won't hold my breath!

I have lived in my property for the past 26 years, two years ago a couple with a 14 year old male moved next door our property's are joined as we are both semi detached. They are mixed race the male is German and the female is polish, at first the couple were very nice and myself being in the building industry they would ask my advice on certain issues regarding their property to witch I gave, and then I was asked to quote to do some work for them once again I did then the couple ased if they could use my contacts ie electrician, brick layer, plasterer, and chippy once again I gave them the relevant details to which they called all of them to quote for work. After a few months I noticed a couple of vans outside the property and then it started ,the noise from the next door was unbearable for weeks on end from 8.00 am up to 9.30 pm 7 days a weekUnderstanding that the work had to be done I accepted the fact, however what the couple had done was get quotes from myself and my contacts had a load of polish do the work. After about 3 months the young lady knocked my door and asked If I could have a look at the work that the workers had done and that she needed some advice as to what to do as the workers had had a dispute with the couple and had taken £5000 and not finished the work, for the next few weeks I gave the couple all the relevant information on trying to get back the money through trading standards and small claims.I did not hear from the couple for weeks and the out of nowhere it started they were going to do the work themself and to top it all the son plays the guitar and try's to sing , well it's been 2 years now and if I told you that what they have done I could be here forever, in short we have fallen out in a big way so far as I have had noise equipment set up by environmentle health , the police have visited me on at least 5 separated times due to me about to kill them over the constant banging/ scraping of walls / removing all the plaster and render from the ajoining wall and sanding the bear brickwork and then getting a threaded bar to rub in the mortar joints to make them half round and smooth, as you can imagine this is taking its toll on my patients.I am now in talks with a mediation officer to try to resolve all the issues.I will Finnish by saying that I have been happily married for 27 years and I that time my wife and I have never had an argument until the issue with the new occupants moved next door.If anyone would like to share their views on my situation and any thoughts of a resolution please feel free. Many thanks ( A FRUSTRATED MAN).

@penelope. You've done the right things so far in taking steps to insulate your own property and addressing the issue of the barking dog with your neighbour. Your next step should be to speak with the mother about the daughter's night time movements. Maybe try and find some solutions that you can offer as well as simply informing her of this. Maybe there is someone else in the daughter's life that can also help professionally.such as a GP, social worker etc. If no workable solutions can be found between you, then you will have to report this to your local environmental health officer as a noise complaint.

I own my ground floor flat but after an elderly neighbour died my new neighbours are disturbing my sleep. Their kitchen is above my small bedroom. The older lady in her 70s is deaf so with her hearing aid out at night she does not hear her daughter..The daughter in her 40s has health issues so does not work and is anti social and mentally challenged. She comes into the kitchen any time between one and five in the morning, bangs drawers and stamps heavily on the floor. She also feeds the dog very early in the morning and seems to encourage it to bark.
I eventually wrote a friendly note explaining the dog barking early morning was a new thing and could it be prevented..The older lady apologised and said she would feed the dog herself as the dog didn't bark with her only with the daughter..That has helped in a temporary capacity
I hoped that the daughter would change her noisy night time habits without me specifacally complaining but that is not happening consistently.
I had my ceiling lowered and insulated but last night I was awakened again at 2 a.m.by the daughter's noisy behaviour overhead bumping and banging things..
I am planning recording any noise in the coming nights and informing the older lady again as she is obviously unaware of her daughter's night time disturbances.
I want to maintain an amicable connection with my neighbours but I find the younger woman's behaviour very challenging and unpredictable.
I am in my 60s and just want a peaceful life and to enjoy my home with undesturbed sleep at night..
Any advice comments appreciated.
Thankyou!

@Mal. It's a difficult situation for you to be in, but unless you can pinpoint anything in particular that would be worth reporting to (a) environmental health or (b) the police, there's not much you can do. You could try simply keeping a record/diary of her actions, then speak to the police or perhaps your local MP to see what advice they can give.

We live in a tiny cottage attatched to a large thatch on our right. The incumbent has made our life hell for 12 years. She resents our second car being parked outside her wall which has a border 1 metre wide, which has compromised our parking. The police have given us permission to park there, but she has tried r dry trick in the book to get us moved.Weapon of choice rubbish. Now it is food waste thrown out of her kitchen window overnightOn the whole we have tried to ignore it,but just recently it is getting to me.My husband says best to ignore it.I truly don't understand, but so far we have done nothingI have need unwell since January, and it is now affecting me.She thinks she is the lady of the manor. She's no ladyWe have lived here for 35 years and have the most wonderfull neighbours.

We bought a new build property, made the developer to do a sound test as we were experiencing loads of disturbance. We hear vibrations, foot steps, phone ringing, and the occasional music played next door in our bedroom and the majority of our flat. Their fridge freezer is placed on the party wall, the tenants have also put their tv plus speakers on that side of the room too so all those things are backing on to our bedroom wall. Unfortunately the test passed, but surely we should not have to accept this? Don't want to get the council involved but if the builders dont add extra sound isolation or at least organise so they can move the fridge form that wall (most of their kitchen appliances are there too incl washing machine) we will have to report it and if that doesn't work we will have to leave. Any suggestions? We have spoken to our neighbours, but we actually don't think it is their fault, but the builder.
Help, getting desperate

About three years ago a man moved in with the woman who lives below me. He is a drug addict and slowly slowly started introducing her to drugs. When I eventually complained she started to say that he had moved out. These are harsh drugs but the smell does not stay very long, more like chemical vapours. The police have been useless. They turned up after making an appointment with her when of course there were no drugs. She told them he does not live there and they said ok and went away. The drugs are being forced on me every day as he uses some kind of vaporiser which releases drugs into the atmosphere while he sleeps for about 20 hours a day. All the other neighbours think he has moved out but I can hear him every day and get drugs into my flat/body every day. If anyone has any idea how to get evidence I would appreciate it. It is a private flat so i can't go to the landlord or council.

@upset purple. I've had similar problem which I and 4 other residents have been fighting for over 2 years. I have now got my MP involved as feel the whole situation is ruining my life. The council are useless and I blame them for putting such an unsavoury family in my street. When I asked the council if the family could be rehoused (3 kids and 2 adults in upstairs property) their response was only if the family requested to be added onto the rehousing list. The council officers words were" we cannot change people's ways!!!!" I have worked all my life and do not rely on the state to keep me. I feel very let down by the whole system.

Good luck with the fight, cos it is just seems to be 1 long battle

I sympathise with all the above victims and targets. I to around 10 years ago had very bad neighbours. They would not let me watch tv, study or go to sleep. Even in the bathroom. i suffered from bad sleep and depression. Even constipation. I must emphasize that the council and police should do more to help. Also help should come quicker; it should not take months.

Reply re Degri I'm having same sort of problem constant threats always when no one is around to hear have informed my landlord his reply was sort it out between you or i'll get rid of both of you soooo 4 years down the line I'm still suffering cannot afford to move on like where I live apart from this man he kicked off yesterday called me all the lazy t...ts under the sun I do work but obviously not to his liking oh I never do the garden the landlord has always done that until he called me one day asking if I had any objections to the neighbour doing it I said no bear in mind neighbour has never done it his girlfriend does it... kept diaries got photos got recordings got a police number but the threat of being kicked out because I complain stops me doing anything feel I have nowhere to turn....

@upsetpurple. Write to you housing department and state the facts including the fact that you have had the issue investigated by Environmental Health. As you are both council tenants is there a possibility that one of you could be moved? It does seem unreasonable to expect a family to be living in a upstairs flat above an elderly person.
upsetpurple 20/10/2014 at 9:04 am
Hello everyone,

I am glad I have come across this website, as I can see I am not the only one suffering, We have been complaining about the family upstairs for a year now, 3 children who are uncontrollable, noisy and absurdly loud. They jump so hard on my ceiling, my glass ornaments shudder. I suffer with extreme depression, OCD, mood disorder, highly anxious and very prone to panic attacks and I am on numerous pills a day. The council are very aware of my situation and how bad it is, with the neighbours contributing. All they have done is sent several letters to her, even confirmed she has no carpets, she is all wooden flooring and has been 'warned' about her childrens behaviour and her screaming but no action has been taken. My Mum went to try and talk to the neighbour last week, but she screamed, sweared and slammed the door in her face. The children never go to bed until at least 1am. She never talks, only shouts and my life is getting worse. I haven't slept properly for over a year, my doctor has given me three new medications to help me cope but they have had no affect. The mother has been warned by letter several times but has taken no action to change anything and basically the council are ignoring us and are not taking it further as they 'do not have the funds and have to go through legalities' and I am heartbroken, please can someone advise me? I already spend my days wanting to die but they make me feel so awful and anxious, my life is deteriorating even more and I'm so annoyed the council will not help. As a council tenant, can I get legal advice/solicitor involved?

Many thanks

@rabbitfarmer. You could try approaching the environmental health department for action related to noise or antisocial behaviour. It seems a shame to inflict an ASBO-type order on an elderly neighbour with whom you are friends though. If the noise is monitored by an EHO maybe a quick word from them would do the trick. Good luck.

Hi. I'm glad I found this page. My life is a nightmare. The 84 year old women is banging constantly and slamming her front door with extreme force. over the past year she has done everything she can to make it feel as tho' she lives with me. I keep going round to have a cup of coffee and a chat with her but as soon as I leave she starts it again. I have spoken to her son and daughter who live on the estate but they refuse to believe me. i reported it to my doctor as I went there with stress. Thank god they believe me but there is not much they can do. I have read all the comments and tho your lives are also living nightmares it gives me some comfort to know I am not alone. x

My husband and I have been fighting a four-year battle with a neighbour two-doors away. She has two sons, now 18 and 21. This woman is divorced and picks up with new boyfriends with whom she spends weekends away (presumably at their houses). The sons have been having a jolly time holding parties (sometimes all-night) for the local delinquents, music provided via a massive boom box in their garden. Police have never done anything, environmental health and antisocial behaviour are worse than useless, even though I have provided them with years of logs. The problem is that our immediate neighbours (both sides) are also of the same ilk and therefore do not complain. This is probably more for fear of reprisals.
We have just suffered three consecutive weekends of parties, one from each of these neighbours and we are thinking of holding a party of our own. Of course, it would be much louder and longer than anything they could ever imagine, but we would be safe in the knowledge that none of the aforementioned 'powers that be' could do anything to stop us! Watch this space.

I can sympathise with all the above, I bought my first house 2 years ago - spent every penny I had on the deposit and the refurb works and for a while it was just bliss. The neighbours have always been rather clumsy and loud but it never really bothered me as I have a busy lifestyle and don't spend long periods at home. Then they had a baby and everything changed...for some reason the mother decided to get into the habit of running up and down the stairs at half five when the baby woke up every morning this would continue till I had to be up for work, unfortunately the stairs are next to the party wall so the noise is quite unbearable (she's not the slimmest person) at the same point the baby took to banging the walker against the adjoining wall something that I can only assume she allowed him to do as she must have been keeping an eye out? we did go to speak to them politely and they were fine at first till the second time when I approached her as she woke my guest at half five and this time i got a very aggressive response. now it seems the noise has got worse, if I come home late after nights with friends (although I come in and go straight to bed) she deliberately makes noise all morning in retaliation - I'm not a loud or aggressive person but because you never know when they will slam a door or a cupboard its put me on edge in my own home, thankfully they are moving I just hope I am lucky enough to get some reasonable people moving in this time around!

I really feel for you. I really do. I am 25 years old and live on my own in a downstairs two-in-a-block. I was in homeless accommodation for a year and ended up getting a job. I then got an offer for a council house, but it was in a village just outside of my town away from family and friends, but I had to take the offer because if not it would mean another year in homleless if I refused. I moved in, everything was fine, I ended up losing my job two weeks later but it was okay. Then the loud TV at night followed by 'Nothing compares' by Shinead O' Connor on repeat from 11pm to 7am every single day started happening. Loud arguments exchanged between a male and female and another male. I had enough of being kept up by the television each night echoing throughout my whole property so I went up at 1am one night, battered on the door, no answer so I decided to write a polite note which was met with two males stamping down on me and threatning to knock out my pet. Loud driers with single shoes in it then followed each night from 12am to 4am above my bedroom, they started using the soundbar on full to watch television programmes, making inappropriate comments whenever I used the toilet, followed me wherever I went in the house dropping things above me on purpose. They also set my on fire, lied to the council that I made them trip over their bins in the dark by moving them, had neighbours stalk me in the street and shout 'fire', park their cars in front of ,y bathroom window, smoke out the house with weed, fill my bins with their litter, throwing bongs and litter out the windows, getting the mother to come and shout threats at me. The council DID NOTHING. The police DID NOTHING. Despite recording equipment installed in the property, they still claimed there was 'no evidence' to evict the neighbour. I could not play my tv, recieve a phonecall, have my morning alarm on or even a friend over without getting a threat thrown at me from above. The neighbour has no carpets and listens into ALL of my private conversations. Thankfully, due to my anxiety disorder worsening and going onto borderline bipolar because of the torment, along with dampness affecting my asthma - the council finally awarded me maximum points and I am moving away from it all. It is not without sacrifice - I have lost out on at least £1,000 in decorating, phonecalls to the police and council every single day, silicone earplugs and my internet is now going to cost me an extra £12 a month in my new place BUT that to me is a small price to pay for something which could have easily have been your life. My advice to council tenants is - get the police and noise team phoned EVERY day, log literally everything into a diary (even normal everyday noises so that if it does go to court and you are like myself and have a 'mental illness' the court will see that you aren't stupid and know the difference between everyday noise and anti social noise) go to your local office everyday, drop a lette

Its horrible being in this situation. I've owned my house for 18months now and from day 1 its been a nightmare. I live in a terraced house so I have two neighbours, one side is bearable and i know the noise that they make is not done on purpose. But my other side is a complete nightmare. They have 3 kids, they wake up and start playing basketball and as soon as they come back from school until they go to sleep it's non stop basketball - inside the house. I've knocked on their door and there mother has been defensive and even cried to say that im bullying them. It's shocking that people can live like such tramps. When's they see me walk into the driveway they start hammering into the wall. Life is just unbearable. How people can be so evil just shocks me.

My sympathy to all of you experiencing such difficult problems. We have a pub next door to us, which sounds bad, but all was well and it was pretty quiet until new tenants moved in recently. Now we have live bands every week, whose acoustic, amplified music pounds through our party wall. It is just a small village pub, and can't accommodate a full, amplified music kit. We have been to Environmental Health and the Licensing Department, who are monitoring it. At first we tried asking the pub landlord and landlady if they could turn the music down, but we were told to get lost. Afterwards the landlady stopped me in the street as I was leaving my house and threatened me, saying 'this is war', 'round one to us', we'll be getting a little visit, etc. I was frightened, and called the police. But when they spoke to the landlady, she gave them her version of events. (Being truthful isn't her strong point.) I have no desire to go to war with her or anyone, so now we've put our house on the market, but I'm not too hopeful of it selling with all this going on.

my problem may be a little different than the others. I don't have one neighbor making my life a living hell, i have everyone on the street and the people behind me. the neighbor that sued me has managed to make everyone around me hate me.I have been living in hell for the last year and a half. the one that sued me is a dog trainer. he had a dog he was training for someone else tied to a tree and it slipped its collar. it was on a sunday morning. he came to me and asked if i'd seen the dog? i then helped him look for the dog for about an hour but we could'nt find it. finally he found it dead in the woods. he then blamed my dog and a stray for killing it. he totally changed his story.afterall he had to blame somebody for it because he was supposed to be taking care of it.i turned it over to my house insurance and they just payed cause it costs more to fight it. well now like i said he has managed to turn everyone around me against me. he has even resorted into harassing my 12 year old son. he ran into my son while he was on his four wheeler. the police have been called out so much they told me they were not coming out here anymore. they say the four wheeler incedent was one persons word against anothers. but who thinks a 12 year old is lying or the 50 year old drunk man?he was as drunk as he could be when he did it and the police did'nt do anything. there is so much more to the story. everyday something negative happens. i don't really know what to do anymore. does anyone have any advice?

What to do "... I had spoke to all my neighbors and asked them would they mind if I held a garden party for my 40th"... Everyone agreed "not a problem they said".. I spent over £800 pounds and when the magician came on to do his show"... About 30 police come thru my gate screeming and pushing people , ordering them all to leave now".. Or they will go back and get a search warrant????"... We had 2 comedy acts and a magician"...I got handed by loads of men screeming in my face I've got a £5000 fine"... It was a small garden party for my 40th with about 30 civilized good hardworking honest people"... So thankyou very much Redbridge council for being totally uncivilized . I for one will now be moving out of this expensive borough.

I have experience a kind of harassment from my neighbour. I live in a block of flats and this individual neighbour lives in the above flat. I started hearing a noise as if a metal object is used, but the worse is, it was very constant, like every morning. I went to the flat to let them know that the banging or bouncing of the object is making an unbearable noise. I put a letter in to inform them of this. One Saturday morning the lady came to my door asking me why I was complaining as it was her 7 months old. Baby that was playing with his toy.

I then asked her to please change the toy because it has been disturbing me from sleeping but she didn't want to know. To be honest, the noise now increases. I think because she now realised that I 'm only a lady that she could do whatever she likes. She's right, ever since I've been in trouble with her. I reported to the council and nothing is done about it.
Now she has a statelite to even watch me everywhere in my flat to the extent that I bathe with my dress on and in the midnight in case she has got people around to come and watch me. Every time I brought my meal to the living room or bed room, you could hear a foot stamping or a jumping up and down in the direction where I am sitting.

Why people that behave this way are allowed to get away with this terrible behavior, I don't know. I am very depressed now that I don't want to see the day. No one is there to report this to. It is sad.

I am living in a ground floor flat, a woman under social services care lives in the flat above with her 3 children.
From the day she has moved in I have had to deal with noisy kids running around, two water leaks to the bathroom (had to have complete refit as the ceiling caved in) and recently one to my kitchen, water streaming down wall and out of strip light.
Slamming of windows, I've never known anyone who can make so much noise in a kitchen or any room for that matter.
Her landlord told me its just domestic noise but other neighbours have complained about her children and him and the landlady say they are the worst tenants ever, had enough now getting a solicitor involved.

Hi, sorry to see so many people having similar problems!. We own our own home, next door is rented through a private landlord. Never had any problems, until 5 years ago when the family from hell moved in! They have one grandchild living with them and 4 others whom they look after when parents work etc. These kids have made our garden a "no go zone". They throw broken glass, half bricks, bike parts etc etc over our hedge into our garden - sometimes with the express intention of hitting us. The boys (all under 10) have exposed themselves to my daughters and urinated through our hedge. have spoken countless times to neighbours but think it is in one ear and out the other!. Have finally written to landlord - but he is as much of an imbecile as they are - they don't think they are tenants they think they are his "mates". Will be going down the legal route as far as we can if same behaviour continues. I think the worst course of action is no action at all.
Good luck everyone. Thanks.

Do I have a right to make a complaint.my neighbours parking place is right outside our living room window seperated by a path along a row of 4 houses, every day he washes his car has his step ladders stuck up in front of the living room window and is constantly walking back and forth. He sprays our car with his hose when wetting it and washing off the dirt which we have asked if he could be more considerate only to be told "why it's only water",after he has finished washing it (2hrs) he will sit in the car for 30 mins at a time with the engine on and sit with the brake lights or fog lights on which makes it hard for us to relax or even watch tv in our living room,we have also asked for more privacy and been told to close the curtains though why we should have to do this during the daytime is beyond me.Further more due to him not working he sees fit to mow his lawn twice a week beteen the hours of 7am to 7.30am or having his dogs barking outside the house anytime from 6.30 am onwards

Degri - yes we are still having a similar problem. Except a new couple rent a house next door, knew we had kids, but as soon as they moved in she (a teaching assistant) started abusive language at our children, when in the garden. She has this conception that the children are 'looking in' her garden when in fact the children talk to other neighbours' children over the fence. I just told the children to stay away from the fence. But she only swears at and is abuse to them when no other person is around. I heard her not so long ago and was appalled and horrified that someone whom works with children behaves so feral. I contacted the Anti-social behaviour help line. They contacted the landlord. A resolve was that the landlord would built a much higher fence. Now the couple have isolated themselves from the community and I am concerned that this one issue is going to escalate into many from them. Some times I wish mediators would look more respectfully on those that have lived in their homes a lot longer than the new comers and see that the new comers are being the cads.

If he wanted a ground floor flat due to his wife's disability, which is likely, the council should be obliged to give him one, if it is a council flat, not that this is any excuse for his abusive behaivour, just shows what a nasty man he is

You wouldnt believe a 75 year old man could bully and intimidate his neighbour but thats whats happening to me. This neighbour lives above me with his disabled wife
and on regular occassions comes out shouting and bawling at me sometimes with abusive language, there is no reason I can think of other than 1-he is not well
2-him and his wife are harassing me out of my ground floor flat because his wife has a disability. As I am always pleasant ad respectful and relatively a quite neighbour, its affected me so badly now I cant sleep properly, yet this 75 yold man chooses his moments carefully-typical of a bully,-when no one is around. I filled diaries in and sent them to the council, yet I am very worried what happens next, has anybody out there had similar experience?
