The Basics of Home CCTV
Installing CCTV at home is legal in the UK and increasingly common. Most people do it to deter burglars or to keep an eye on their property, and there is nothing wrong with that. In most cases, you do not need planning permission or your neighbours' consent to put up cameras on your own home, though there can be exceptions for listed buildings or properties in conservation areas.

Where it gets more complicated is when your cameras capture images beyond your own property. If your CCTV records footage of a neighbour's garden, their front door, or a shared driveway, you may start to engage legal obligations, and there are several laws that could apply.
Which Laws Apply
Home CCTV does not fall under the UK GDPR or the Data Protection Act 2018 if you are using it purely for personal or household purposes. This is sometimes called the "household exemption". As long as your cameras only cover your own property, the data protection rules do not apply to you.
However, if your system captures footage beyond your property boundary, such as a neighbour's house, their garden or a public footpath, the household exemption may no longer apply. At that point, you could technically become a data controller under the UK GDPR, with obligations around how you store, use and share the footage. People whose images are captured may also have the right to request access to that footage. In practice, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) tends to try informal resolution with householders first, but they do have the authority to take formal action where they consider it necessary.
The other laws that can come into play are the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and general nuisance law. Privacy arguments can also be raised in civil cases, drawing on Article 8 of the Human Rights Act 1998. If a camera is positioned in a way that makes a neighbour feel watched or intimidated, they may have grounds to take action under one or more of these.

A camera pointed at your own front door that happens to catch a sliver of the pavement is unlikely to cause trouble. A camera angled directly at a neighbour's bedroom window is a different matter. The key question is whether the setup is proportionate: does the camera capture only what is reasonably needed for security, or does it go further than that?
Common complaints between neighbours include cameras that overlook a garden where children play, cameras with audio recording that pick up private conversations, and cameras positioned so that they make a neighbour feel deliberately surveilled. Even if the camera owner has no bad intentions, the effect on the neighbour is what matters.
If a neighbour asks you to adjust a camera and you refuse, they can report the matter to the police (who may treat it as harassment if there is a pattern of behaviour), complain to the ICO, or in some cases take civil action. Courts have ordered cameras to be repositioned or removed where they found the installation was disproportionate.

What You Can Do if a Neighbour's CCTV Bothers You
Start by talking to your neighbour: our guide on what to do about a neighbour's CCTV camera walks through the options. In many cases, they may not realise their camera captures your property, and a polite conversation can resolve things quickly. If the camera has been put up following a dispute, the conversation may be harder, but it is still worth trying before escalating.
If talking does not work, you can write a formal letter asking them to adjust or reposition the camera. Keep a copy. You can also contact the ICO, who have published guidance on domestic CCTV and can investigate complaints where footage goes beyond the owner's property. They tend to try informal resolution first, but can issue enforcement notices if needed.
If the situation amounts to harassment, such as a camera being used to monitor your movements or intimidate you, the police can get involved. Under the Protection from Harassment Act, a course of conduct that causes alarm or distress can be a criminal offence. In serious cases, you could also seek an injunction through the civil courts.
Keeping Your Own CCTV on the Right Side of the Law
If you are installing CCTV at home, a few practical steps will help you avoid problems. Point cameras at your own property as far as possible. If a camera unavoidably captures part of a neighbour's property or a public area, consider adjusting the angle, using privacy masking (most modern systems support this), or reducing the field of view.
Let your neighbours know you have cameras. You are not legally required to put up signs for a purely domestic system, but it is good practice and can prevent misunderstandings. Store footage securely and do not share it publicly, for example on social media, unless there is a genuine reason such as helping police identify a suspect.
Being open and reasonable about your CCTV is the simplest way to avoid disputes. If a neighbour raises a concern, take it seriously rather than dismissing it. Most problems with home CCTV come not from the cameras themselves but from a breakdown in communication between neighbours.
The problem is is always been a trouble maker and if anyone seeks to this elderly neighbours she accesses them of talking about her, she's even sent hate mail to other neighbours who talk to them.
This situation is out of hand, this elderly lady is scared to look out of the window, close her curtains, they've also had their car scratched, these people ate making their lives hell,
They take the cctv cameras down but 5 minutes later when the housing people have left they put them back up.
No one should have to live like prisoners in their home, and even though its s council estate, and they've warned this women she just laughs and brags about it.
What else can we do, it's difficult for this elder lady to move cause she needs an adapted house and there's none about. So she's stuck.

Data protection law says that people who capture images or audio recordings from outside their property boundary using a fixed camera, such as a CCTV camera or smart doorbell, should:
tell people that they are using recording equipment;
in most circumstances, provide some of the recording if asked by a person whose images have been captured;
regularly or automatically delete footage;
in most circumstances, delete recordings of people if they ask; and
stop recording a person if they object to being recorded, but only if it is possible to do so. For example, if they can point the camera in a different direction but still use it for the same purposes, eg keeping their property safe.

Lately there has been unwanted behavior such as teens and younger loitering spitting smoking litter, rubbish left in and around the block also horrible swearing and breaking into properties and wee pooh is it possible to look at footages with out having police involved
I hear the point about it being a human rights case, but if the footage proves my suspicions were correct, do they have a leg to stand on? If I point a hidden camera at the sky, their window opens, a hand comes out and litter is thrown out, is that voyeurism?
It's similar to Matt Hancock's scandal. Allegations were made and no one believed he wasn't following rules. When the footage got leaked, why is there "a breach in national security?" even though we all know the truth?
Also, some drivers drive with dashcams. I may be in someone's footage without consent, even though I've done no wrong.
Clearly some exceptions can be made right?

Latest update:3 days ago, the landlord's worker said to my housemates(The workers talk in a way where I will know), "Is he(They also use he when describing me) still living here? Something about the cctvs(Sounds raising the security), if leaves and takes out his bags, break down his door and call the police". I suspect the reason they say all these is because they think and fear that I will leave the property and not pay for rent and wall redecoration for the mould I cause in the room. The couple are very very very troublesome, busybodies and fast to judge. The next day, they were talking, verbally abusing, insulting and threaning me with police and many things in the backyard. In the past, I have many times wanted to complain about them to the ICO and police but did not because of the relationship "we had"(It is bad now). I am going to move out of the property in several weeks.

First raise the concern regarding domestic cctv capturing images beyond the property boundary or in a communal area with your Housing Manager.
Permission is usually required before any external fittings such as Sat Dishes, CB / TV Aerials, CCTV, etc is installed.(see your tenancy agreement).
If the landlord granted permission but did not conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment**, They may be LIABLE for allowing a Tenant to breach your Human Rights Article 8 "right to privacy" line 1.
You have the right to ask the landlord for the "clear and justifiable reason" (from ico guidelines) that overrides your fundamental rights* (granted under UK Data Protection) for giving the Tenant in question permission to intrude on your privacy.
You should also ask the landlord for the "legitimate interest reason"*** that the Tenant has for capturing images beyond the property boundary.
By making a reference to "The Tenant", The Tenant is now a Data Controller as defined by UK Data Protection Law........SEE PREVIOUS POST.......

( I own)has a cctv which films all the coming & going of everyone in all the apartments . The cctv is pointing towards my apartment & I feel I’m being watch 24hrs a day. The landlord of the offending apartment does care as long as he’s getting his rent.

The management company to my apartment block has installed a CCTV camera with sound in the communal reception area.
Should they have a GDPR policy in place and if so should it be available to owners of apartments.
The management company are using the CCTV to monitor who is visiting the apartment blocks and attending meetings in the communal meeting room.
Also employees of the Management company are accessing the information put simply watching it on an evening as a person would watch a TV for no purpose other than to access knowledge of who is visiting the apartments for social purposes.
I draw your attention to this excerpt from section 3 of the code;
The use of surveillance systems for limited household purposes is exempt from the DPA. This applies where an individual uses a surveillance system to protect their home from burglary, even if the system overlooks the street or other areas near their home. Information captured for recreational purposes, such as with a mobile phone, digital camera or camcorder, are also exempt.
We have a couple of strange neighbours who we believe are pointing cameras front and back of their property, capturing passersby. They admitted to doing this during an altercation with someone else.
Concerned about why they would do this and moreover how they are storing the data, we notified the police. The police advised that whilst they could not tell us whether or not these people were using CCTV, the individuals concerned had not broken any law. They would need to put signage up alerting to the use if CCTV, and there are none.
My question therefore is this; If they are infact not using static wired- in cameras, but video camcorders instead, are these devices exempt from CCTV and GDPR please? We see red lights flashing and are still convinced that something is recording us.

How can I really safeguard my privacy in this situation?
a neighbour had CCTV installed due to DV by our joint social landlord.
She suffer issues and has trained the CCTV on our drive and property moves it off and on the house. For no reason moves it with a stick .. she broke a window on our house and when the Sd card was taken out thete were thousands of images of me my kids in our garden and house.
Our landlord knew she moved the CCTV but did little to prevent her moving it after they had reset it...
I did not know initially it eas landlords CCTV .. as there was no signage ...

After some advice, my car keeps being vandalised, keyed, thrown rocks, damage to my windscreen etc. All at a cost to me. My question is am I legally allowed to install a camera so it looks out of my window and onto my car, I am the only person that uses that parking space and I am willing to let all of my neighbours know why and where it is placed (I live in a block of maisonettes) and the camera would view the pavement as well as my car.

If you are capturing images beyond your property boundary, you should have a clear and justifiable reason for doing so. In particular, you will need to think why you need these images. If asked by an individual or the Information Commissioners Office (ICO), you will need to be able to explain your reasons, so you should write them down now. You should also write down why you think capturing the images is more important than invading the privacy of your neighbours and passers-by.
You will also need to:
Let people know you are using CCTV by putting up signs saying that recording is taking place, and why.
Ensure you don’t capture more footage than you need to achieve your purpose in using the system.
Ensure the security of the footage you capture – in other words, holding it securely and making sure nobody can watch it without good reason.
Only keep the footage for as long as you need it – delete it regularly, and when it is no longer needed.
Ensure the CCTV system is only operated in ways you intend and can’t be misused for other reasons. Anyone you share your property with, such as family members who could use the equipment, needs to know the importance of not misusing it.
You also need to make sure you respect the data protection rights (Data Protection Act 2018) of the people whose images you capture. This includes the following things:
Responding to subject access requests (SARs), if you receive any. Individuals have a right to access the personal data you hold about them, including identifiable images. They can ask you verbally or in writing. You must respond within one month and give them a copy of the data.
Deleting footage of people if they ask you to do so. You should do this within one month. You can refuse to delete it if you specifically need to keep it for a genuine legal dispute – in which case you need to tell them this, and also tell them they can challenge this in court or complain to the ICO.
Consider any objection you get now from particular people about capturing their image in the future. Given the nature of CCTV systems, this may be very difficult to do. However, you should again think whether you need to record images beyond your property boundary – particularly if your system is capturing images from a neighbour’s home or garden.
If you fail to comply with your obligations under the data protection laws, you may be subject to enforcement action by the ICO. This could include a fine. You may also be subject to legal action by affected individuals, who could pursue court claims for compensation.
If you follow our guidance and take all reasonable steps to comply with your data protection obligations, the ICO is unlikely to regard you as a regulatory risk. So the ICO would be unlikely to think that taking enforcement action against you was a proportionate use of its resources.

The cctv was installed the next day and i persnally have seen it largely as a benefit.
There are two cameras,one outside the front door and the other inside on the ground floor hallway.
I was sited as one of the people displaying anti social behaviour by a neighbour so what this has done for me is show the HA that there are no anti social behaviours coming from my flat... neither from myself or any of my guests. Behaviours that are considered to be anti social aren't usually able to be amended very much within a short period of time certainly not curtailed to be non existent within 24 hours! So the cctv has been my vindicator!
However I don't feel the same about the covert cctv camera that was also installed at the same time. If I weren't so aware of my own surrounding's I would not have seen it. It's inside a voltage warning box right outside my front door on the landing. It's the only one hidden camera and it's on the second floor outside my home. I know other people have been sited as being anti social as it was I that made the complaint, so why is there only a camera outside my flat? I've told my next door neighbour as she is under the cameras gaze along with myself. We both feel violated. It's one thing to film someone with their consent but to do it inside their own home a place of safety and security without their knowledge or permission can't be legal... it's certainly not ethical! It seems that integrity and common decency have been replaced by fear,paranoia,and the desire for control.

No offended neighbour has the automatic legal right to perceivably force a neighbour to take down a CCTV camera etc. if you check with your local police constabulary they will show you a copy of the rules and regulations that clearly states any home owner or occupier is lawfully entitled to install their own security CCTV system to protect themselves and their property.
Only UNDER EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD ANYONE BE FORCED BY A COURTOF LAW? TO REMOVE THEIR CCTV CAMERA.
The police treat these issues mainly as a "CIVIL MATTER", this means the police can raise an incident number and provide evidence to a court of law, however you will have to put your hand in your own pocket or bank account and pay for your own legal proceedings in a court of law.
WARNING be advised that as the law currently stands you are lawfully entitled to install your own CCTV system, the judge will most likely remind you that at the court hearing, thus under current laws you are very highly likely to lose your court case, this means the neighbour you have taken to court has the legal right to COUNTER SUE YOU (issue to costs) for costs, damages and compensation for wrongly forcing them to appear at court, so a simple application to court with or without a solicitor costing up to £300 could in fact cost you £600 - £700 if you fail to win your case.
If the court orders you to pay your wrongly accused neighbour their issue to costs and you fail to comply with that court order and pay your neighbour.
Your neighbour can pay £60 to the court and enforce that charging order, this means just like on TV that two big burly men like bouncers will turn up on your door step and demand full payment with extra added fees and interests, thus it could easily escalate to £1,500.
Being high court bailiffs with a live writ they can remover your car from your driveway and contents from inside your house whether you like it or not, and if you call the police they will only attend to keep the peace, the police cannot lawfully stop the high court bailiffs from removing your property to be sold off at auction.
There is however circumstances where local public authorities like your local council can automatically go to court and have your camera removed for anti-social behaviour in collaboration with the police!
Such an example would be a private CCTV camera overlooking the local council owned school and playground, thus the parents concerns raised to the school headmaster and the local council authority.
Basically it is all self explanatory if you think about it, but in short no disgruntled neighbour has the automatic lawful right to have another neighbours CCTV camera removed.

This neighbour has cctv cameras to the front, side and rear of his property! His cameras are not only directed into his back garden but also the public alleyway and into his neighbours back garden the other side of the side alley. He has never sought approval from his neighbours nor displays any signage that he has cctv cameras in use!
He also has some suspicious looking 'heads/busts' (which we are convinced have got small cameras set in the eyes of these heads) positioned in opposite corners in his back bedroom window, one facing into his neighbours back garden on the side alley plus the other facing into my partners back garden(two doors down)
What action can we take against this and who should we contact?

"To the extent that video surveillance such as that at issue in the main proceedings covers, even partially, a public space and is accordingly directed outwards from the private setting of the person processing the data in that manner, it cannot be regarded as an activity which is a purely ‘personal or household’ activity for the purposes of the second indent of Article 3(2) of Directive 95/46.’ [para 33]"
With the DPA1998 now replaced by GDPR/DPA2018 it would pay to double check whether or not a "home" CCTV system meets the ICO recommended standardsand is installed in a compliant manner with the DPA 2018.
"Only public authorities have obligations under the Human Rights Act. You can’t take action against other people or private organisations because they’ve breached your human rights.
But if you take court action against someone for some other reason - for example, a claim for unfair dismissal against your employer, the courts can look at whether your human rights have also been breached. This is because courts are also public authorities and they must take account of human rights in all cases they hear."

I am neither paranoid nor delusional. I already have CCTV installed on my property and it does the job perfectly it is setup to deter burglars or damage to the “property” and to be honest it just sits there in the background I’ve no need to be sat watching what’s going on but should I ever then it’s safe to say the footage can be used and for my neighbours too if their property if broken into.
When the Homewatch team send an email and an update on their social media with the plans to have CCTV installed deliberately to point towards the entrance of the street so they can monitor the incoming and outgoing of the street not to protect the property
then this is where residents are challenging the decision as this is not being installed for the original purpose to deter crime against the property.
It’s not effective use of CCTV as it will not prove if a crime has occurred down the other end of the street. Local policeman is saying it will need to have signs up saying there are cameras up that will have a knock on effect to house prices and a number of other reasons. So that’s why the post was uploaded, it’s not about being paranoid.
Also, what makes you think people are installing CCTV to spy on you? You seem very paranoid and bordering on delusional. If something happens to your property surely you would like there to be CCTV in the event it may aid any investigation of any crime committed against you.
Homewatch has teamed up with a resident who has a house that faces onto the entrance to the street. The resident proposes to install cctv and direct it at the entrance to the street so Homewatch can track the incoming and outgoing traffic into the street whether it be by foot or car.
A number of residents have said signs will have to be put up around the streets advertising this and it could have an effect on house prices as nobody wants to feel like a prisoner being watched 24x7 and it also gives the impression there is crime happening all the time.
The installation will also not give the required evidence that a car was involved with a crime at the other end of the street it would only give the police a lead, it neither proves or disproves anything.
The fact the cameras are not being installed to protect the property / deter the house from being broken into sounds like Homewatch and the resident are trying to exploit residents (especially as they are asking for donations for the installation)
What does the law say regarding this scenario... I don’t like the idea of walking dogs and being filmed and audio recorded to as some residents have suggest already exist on the street.

Just want to get some more advice on this subject as the more I am reading the more in getting confused..
We live in a end terrace house, we park our cars in the same place day in and out. We have what we thought a council watched cctv installed at the end of the road but found out recently its never on and never caught anything or been able to be used.
Weve recently had numerous cars in the street damaged on several occasions including two of ours. one person even grabbed a person who was caught kicking their windscreen and he was given a public order notice for grabbing a 17 year old who had smashed his windscreen but the police were more concerned about how this gentleman had grabbed the person rather than the damage. The police have said we can report any damage that happens but its ongoing.
I want to install my own cctv system that over sees ur cars that are parked on the street.
Can anyone help me legally where I stand with this one.
Ive tried speaking to the ICO and our local police but they have said once ive installed it they will come view it to determine if im in any breach then take action.

I have a neighbour whom I do not socialise with in any friendly chatter, only making contact when she consistently complains if any foliage that encroaches over the fence on to her property.
Recently I purchased another home with the view to move
in and then carry out renovations on my first home to sell.
A real estate agent approached me on behalf of my unfriendly neighbour to ask if I would remove trees and foliage that impede the sea and city views of her property and affect the sale price of her home she also intends to sell.
The trees are significant , up to 25 years old. I declined to have them removed but agreed to trim. For the last two months, I've been living between two residents. Over the last weeks, I've have noticed a deterioration of my garden bed at my first home that is left vacant on occasions.
First, a full hedge of witches broom showed signs of rapidly dying off
Then my 25 year old Chinese Fan Palm showed significant signs of poor health and in and into the last stage of dying.m An arborist was engaged who informed me that my large garden bed was completely poisoned and in the stages of dying .
In addition, 50 or more holes were drilled into the trunks, and a glyphosate potent herbicide was injected into two of my Palm trees. Coincidentally both trees in the line sight of the neighbour's sea and city view she would want to achieve. My garden with torch Gingers, witches broom hedge, Exora's Foxtail Palms and many more plants, all now in advance stages of completely dying. In addition to my garden vandalised and poisoned, a 25-year-old Council owned, Cuban Royal Palm Tree on the Council verge also in line sight of the neighbour's sea and city view has numerous drill holes with the injected potent glyphosate potent herbicide.Her CCTV camera would record when I am in residence or not! I have filed a police report and notified the Cairns City Council who are investigating the dying Cuban Royal.
I am a retired female owner in fear of this neighbour's alleged erratic and suspicious behaviour. She is (maybe a 55-year-old) sole resident of this neighbouring property.
What other action can be taken by me to protect my property and possibly my safety?
I have access to the main unit and also an app on my phone installed by the company enabling me to view all cctv from where ever I may be.
Recently the directors and managing agent have also installed the app on their phone.

All 4 residences use the rear garden as access too. I'm about to install cctv in the rear garden which would point to the entrance of the garden, 1 camera pointing at the front down to the gate and also one upstairs outside my front door.

There is however circumstances where local public authorities like your local council can automatically go to court and have your camera removed for anti-social behaviour in collaboration with the police! Such an example would be a private CCTV camera overlooking the local council owned school and playground, thus the parents concerns raised to the school headmaster and the local council authority.
Basically it is all self explanatory if you think about it, but in short no disgruntled neighbour has the automatic lawful right to have another neighbours CCTV camera removed.

we had cctv installed because of our violent neighbour. Police checked our monitor and said it was ok because with children etc walking past couldn't see them. Our neighbour next door has installed his own cctv, the thing is its a 360 degree
Recently our 'neighbours' the local angling society have installed CCTV cameras into their car parks due to recent vandalism and theft. I am sure that one of the cameras points towards our garden and home and are worried that the camera could be recording images of the children. Unfortunately they are not very friendly neighbours, can i ask them to ensure that their cameras are turned away from our home? or to see evidence that it is? or to ask for a letter confirming it is? I got a problem whit a family which they living whit my familiy in same house. Just I let you know we rented this house so we are not owns. They fit a cctv camera for protect their car which it's parking on road. They did that ago two years. Ago 6-7 months they accused us that we not pushed good gabage in their space(this area it's in our communal courtyard out front). When we asked them Who they know they said "I checked on cctv camera". We were verry surprised because they told us this camera gonna be just for protect their car not for check us activity on our communal courtyard. After that they repeatedly used cctv camera to check us out if we signed for a envelop or which Time we come home or if we shut The gate. We are verry upset for this, we feel watching all time and i a big disconfort for us. They don't have any permision from agency or land lord. Please help us.

I want to install a small CCTV camera outside to keep an eye on my car. There is a parking space either side of my car.
Am I allowed to put a camera up on council property? I have found an extremely small camera which would surfice to my requirements. I actually want it more as a deterrent before this fool causes me to have a serious accident!
So, can I install a CCTV camera to record just this area of tarmac? I want to install it to collect evidence for civil prosecution against the tresspassers but outside of evidence gathering, it will obviously record my neigbours crossing it to get to and from the property.
I am now informed that because I moved the camera to capture what has been confirmed as evidence of a criminal offence (benefit fraud), that I may be in breach of the use of my CCTV, in deed may have committed a criminal offence myself.
The captured footage was passed to the relevant authorities, never made public & is kept secure under my data protection policy.

I am disabled and have CCTV in my home not pointing at any one I live in social housing and the landlord refuses to do repairs as long as there on I explained there for my safety in my own home. I repeat these are in doors and not pointing at neighbours or anyone else's property I have had them for years. there has been a number of people murdered or beaten in this area where I stay and I want to make sure I am safe and if anyone does do anything the police or my family can see who it was. my question is this illegal to have cameras in my home for my protection the only time a camera would capture anyone would be if the front door was open (camera films front door from inside property not outside) or when they entire my property there has been a notice in my hall way for years 6 to be exact and the landlord was fine with it and people have repaired stuff before now there getting difficult and saying there passing this to there legal team. I fail to see how I am breaking any law all cameras are in my home none film out side unless the doors open when they capture whos there.

My question is; does a landlord need to inform you if they are installing CCTV'S in the communal area? The on of the cameras is actually facing my front door so they can actually see who comes and goes, what deliveries i get etc. I understand the need to prevent crime but without consent or consultation i feel my privacy is violated and i am now being watched.

Please read my situation carefully. I'm a ground floor resident and I have 3 floors above me. I don't why, but these upper residents hate me and my family, and my house. They always throw stuff in our lawn from above, almost everyday. I had lodged a complaint but due to lack of evidence no action was taken. Due to this reason, I have installed two CCTV in my home, both of which cover only their two windows (from which they throw) one balcony and one kitchen window. I was recently scammed and now paying for an online course..
It is a distant learning course and the Rep/Salesman came to my house to discuss the course.
However he lied to me and said i would get an NVQ Level 3 and i could cancel anytime which now i find isn't the case.
He also said i would be paying £120 a month but there taking £150, the company is called Trades Gateway.
I want my friend to get an interview with them like they did with me but video record them inside his home discussing the "course".
I was hoping they would use the same sales pitch they used with me and lie to him.
Then ask the interviewer to leave the contract as he wants to think it over, as i'm now being told i am not allowed to cancel and i they took out a loan on my name for the course which i was not aware of, he took the contract aswell on the day.
Is this legal to record in his home? Without consent as he wouldn't lie if we told him he was being recorded.

manner and I received abusive and threatening behaviour. *There is a Covenant which is written in every residents deeds, * that there will be no parking in the Court of Caravans, Boats, or Commercial vehicles. I am contemplating on the issuing of a Court Injunction to my neighbour and the man with a van.

Is it breaking a law that if you have (cctv in operation) signs in a premises that doesn't even have cameras? I'm just unsure.
As they never enter fully onto my property, it is necessary to record the footpath directly outside my house. The cameras do not extend beyond this path.
Am I allowed to do this solely for the purpose of providing the police with video evidence?

It seems to me that if we were to go back to treating neighbours with some respect either way there would be no need for the cameras, therefore no one would need to complain either.
Can I suggest you go and talk to your neighbours, try and understand their concerns, then express yours and why your talking to them and try and work out something between you, calling the police or council around rubs people up the wrong way, try talking to them first yourselves and try to be unselfish as well as dealing with your concerns too of course, you never know you maybe surprised!!

I work for one of the largest CCTV suppliers in the UK, and one thing I can say is that people are not as neighbourly as they perhaps once were.
Bottom line is this, 1, if you weren't such an a-hole maybe your neighbours wouldn't need cameras. 2, If the cameras are not there for you then they are there for somebody else, which means you should keep your nose out anyway lol.
Sorry I am just having a rant, people are not anti-CCTV, they tend to be anti-anything new.
Oh my privacy! Oh me, oh my lol. Just chill out people. Prime example is my next door but one neighbour. I happen to get along fine with him only because I let out my steam online instead of in person lol, but he called the police on next door neighbour but two, i.e his next door neighbour when he was having CCTV fitted.
The police, despite knowing this guy is a-hole numero uno side with him.
Little did he know that they were my cameras and my installers.
So I sent the installers back who were a little shaken up by the police visit. Bottom line is this, nobody can stop you recording nout!
One small point to mention, one of the camera angles was a little high, so that police community van with the PTZ camera on top came round and told him to readjust it slightly so make sure the cameras are only pointing on your property. Sometimes it is natural for the cameras to record some footage of the neighbours, then I just hope your neighbours are not moronic, jealous cowardly types...
I have breeched my tenancy so they say and that's without them looking at my property. If I take it down then she starts her harresement again. I can't cope and just want to end my life because of being victimised by her. Housing association will not do anything in regards to what she has done to me. They have now served notice of persession belive her. They have no proof and I do but still no help. Just more threats of as. Not true. I want to protect myself and home. Now I will feel more valuable than I already do
we live in a block of flats with car parking at the back , one parking space per flat , we had trouble with the people down stairs and police were involved and they were asked to leave the flat .The police also asked about a cttv system I had set up ,which at the time was not working and they told me to get it up and running to protect my car out in the car park.
I have since done this and now I seem to have other tenants moaning that it is watching them going to there cars, the camera is set on my car no windows or buildings . and the only ones moaning are the ones breaking housing management rules by using two car spaces when only allowed one .

So there you have it people. If you are unhappy about your law abiding neighbour having any sort of CCTV that maybe covers only a small part of your property, like a boundary fence. Maybe you like to play loud music, or fight in the garden when drunk or simply throw your rubbish in your neighbours garden when you feel like it. Or maybe just let your dog out to defecate when you see fit. Simply telephone the Police, complain your human rights are being infringed and you feel harassed by your anti-social nieghbour. Even better tell them you have teenage kids and the PTZ could be used to zoom in through your windows. The law is a joke.
Ironically the lady complaining has no front gates, open plan garden. And has never had any problems. In fact when my house and car was pelted in eggs the Bullet camera vision never caught the perpetrators. They could only come at my property directly from the side across her property. Go figure.
My position is perfectly clear to the Police. The PTZ camera is for my own personal security. It is not being used voyeuristic purposes. The capabilities of the PTZ are not being used for unethical purposes. The camera is in a static position, the recordings alone
on the hard drive are evidence. .
My wife wants me to just rip it down, to me now this is a matter of legality, and principal. I could fully understand if I had the camera staring in to someone bedroom invading their privacy. I would not even situate a camera in my back garden being conscious of this. That is why i have only used cameras on the front and side of my property. I am being asked to make modifications that totally block out her entire property at the expense of my own security.

I put the Camera up. She then immediately complained to the police.2 PCSO have visited my home 3 times in just 4 days, once with a uniformed officer. They asked to see the camera. It was in a static position video recording my entire front garden as it had been since installation. The hard drive was evidence if it was needed, alas they were not interested in the continuous recordings. They asked me to physically move around the PTZ on to my neighbour garden and then zoom in on to her windows. Then they said to me the camera could be used for voyeuristic purposes, because it can see in to my neighbours property. I explained I could look out of the window and get a much better view of my neighbours windows and property, not that I want to mind you. In a nutshell what they were saying is, I could hypothetically commit a crime in the future. I have not obtained any view from the PTZ that I would not normally have, It is Only 3x Zoom a very basic model it does not have the capacity to peer through windows. To be honest someone stood at my front gate would be very difficult to identify
My argument to the police is the camera is only being used by me to cover my front/side garden. and see over my front hedge where youths gather. Why should I remove it, or fill the dome with masking tape as requested. In fact why should I make any modifications at all to my install. In my opinion I have done nothing illegal. Yet I feel like I am doing something illegal. The issue seems to be the dome having the capacity and the potential to be able rotate and zoom in with the camera feature. It would be easier for my wife/me to stand at the windows with her I phone 6,and get a much better quality picture or video. He seemed unable to comprehend what i was saying. The PTZ to the PCSOs makes me a potential criminal. I have the capacity to commit crime further down the line. I mean seriously. The PCSO said it was like walking past a Primary School with a Video camera,ridiculous. The insinuation did not go unnoticed, I have gone from security conscious home owner to potential paedophile by just installing this PTZ camera.
The hole idea in installing PTZ high on my property is to make it tamper proof. And have the capacity to see everything in my garden. Mine covers front gate/back gate /drive/blind spot behind edge. It would be impossible to rotate to my back gate without rotating straight past my neighbour side. Maybe I should also put my bins out blindfolded.

Just a quick query please. My children (7 years old) play football on a footpath which separates houses. I understand that playing football in such a small area can cause problems. Our neighbours also claim that this has broken some of their fences, which isnt the case.
We have changed the football they play with twice ( going to a flyaway ball and now a spongeball). Damage from either of these items to fences will be non.
Today we have noticed that our neighbours have insterted a CCTV camera which overlooks the area my children play.

I have a flat in a tenement building in Scotland. Every year we have a lot of problems, we have usually to replace the door lock twice a year and we have few time people trying to break down the door of the ground floor flat. The house across the roads water drainage pipe is under ground directly through my land.
They have 2 cctv cameras looking directly onto my land they say it is to watch that nothing happens to there pipe.
Even though the pipe is leaking on my land and they received a lawyers letter informing them of this. They won't get it fixed.

One looks directly at our house and a further two overlook our private shared driveway therefor monitoring all traffic to and from ourselves and our two immediately adjacent properties.
Others are positioned to monitor all traffic entering or leaving the private development of ten houses of which he is not a part only having right of access to his property adjacent to the development
We have had antisocial issues with this neighbour in the past so contacted the local police to see exactly what and why cameras were monitoring our development.
The police called at their property but were refused access to discuss the situation regarding the cameras.
The police have told me that our neighbour can have these cameras and there is nothing they can do as it is a civil matter!!
I cannot believe that someone is allowed to monitor neighbours in this way, as to to my knowledge there have not been any incidents at any property that would warrant 6 CCTV cameras to be installed.

We have had "problem neighbours" for several years.
The Police have been involved on numerous occasions as have the Local Authority, Neighbourhood Resolutions and ALL the services involved have found the neighbours to be "the aggressors."
The neighbours have continued a campaign of intimidation, harassment directly and indirectly by inciting third parties to harass.
We have had endure countless investigations by South Yorkshire Police, DWP, Yorkshire Water, YEDL, British Gas, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Councils Social Services, BMBC Environmental Health, BMBC Building and Planning Depts. following allegations made by the "problem neighbours" ............ all allegations made by them have been found to be without substance or grounds.
The neighbours have been warned by South Yorkshire Police regarding their behaviour but no further action has been effected.
The problem neighbour is a Victim Support Worker - the very people who are supposed to help Victims of harassment, abuse etc etc etc.

I have recently built an annex within the curtilage of my property and installed a CCTV system myself. The problem neighbour has been filmed photographing the Cameras of my CCTV system .............. quite clearly he thinks it's ok to film myself and family but does not think we should have the same rights to install a security system.

You are captured hundreds of times a day on cctv cameras in shops, pubs, petrol stations, do you send lawyers letters to these people to say that they are infringing your privacy.
We live in an upstairs maisonette. It has no marked out parking spaces but a neighbour always parks his expensive car outside the window of the downstairs maisonette underneath his and close to ours.He has recently installed three CCTV cameras on the spot were he likes to parks. I have two young children and it means it's near our front door. I feel like it's intruding into our family life as he can watch my children and myself come and go. Is this legal as it doesn't point onto his own property or his official car parking space. It really makes my uncomfortable. I really think families should be given more privacy.

We don't get on with our neighbour. At all. She won't even speak to us an never did, when we first moved in and said hi, she grunted in response! That's what we are dealing with.
She has cameras on all sides of her property. The camera on the side is one in a dome that can move around. We can't see it moving. We strongly believe that she maybe using the camera to 'trespass' onto our property and look into our side door, window and garden.
She would never admit to it. Can we ask police/council (as she is a council tennant) to make her replace it with one that doesn't move and so is solely fixed looking at the side of her property?
It is above her side door and she also has a 6ft gate before anyone even gets to the door!
Just wondering if there's anything we can do.

Would I be breaking the law if I had a cctv camera pointed to the pavement where the car is parked?
My question is, one of my tenants covered the lens of the camera with tape. I have him on video doing it. You can't see his face, but he is the only black man in the house, and the hand is clearly black. Is there anything I can do about it?
I came across this forum hoping to find some answers following a dispute with our neighbour.
He has a total of 11 CCTV cameras covering his 3 bed terraced house, 8 of which are on the front and 3 on the back of his property. They are also installed with sound.
He has them pointing where the Children play on the Avenue, one on my garden, one on my back garden, one at his cars and I am unsure about the rest of them.
I am just wanting to know if there is a limit or a law on how many CCTV cameras an individual can have on a council property as this is becoming ridiculous.
Also the park diagonally in the street to allow 3 cars to be parked into 2 spaces, therefore the left front wheel next to the kerb and the back wheels apx 2 feet away from pavement, causing an obstruction to the residents. they also park on the pavement outside my house, when walking them to school they have to walk in the road to pass the car.
I have some horses they staryed to behave in a rather timid way and i grew suspiscious that they were being deliberately agitated. I have had them all since they were born.i started to check on the hedging etc and noted that there were saw marks on certain parts so one could see from main rd through my field to theres. also there were lots of stix and paw prints.My little shed had the metal bent in several places so to monitor my field and horse. this was a concern as i dont always go in there daily which makes me think theyve been there when ive enjoyed being there alone. lately thouhh all horses been out because the person throwing stix allowed dogs about five of them worry the horses to jumo outta field.they were on a single track lane on other side and she was seen to get in her vehucle and chase them towards the main rd.i have lost my tack and ive not even got headcollars which was stolen of heir heads.the man who told me about her chasing them is scared of them and wont say anything.i got out.as the last straw whe she walked past my old girl lying dying in a fence that shed been chased over and got tangled in.she left her for dead. i moved them. i had to ut was killing my horses and police cud do nothing.where i moved is two sides ofmain roads but two accessiblae only by way of going into private property.wgat can i monitor and be safe knowing it will hold uo in court.its clearly still a problem as my two mares ran away from their feed as she drove past one day so they know her vehicle well. i want so much to see her in court for what sges done but cannot get it wrong as she us very uo on legal terms etc and laws.

Something needs to be done he can't keep getting away with this.
They refused to remove the cameras off. I checked my home insurance and as it has legal expenses cover I spoke to a Solisitor who advised that this was harassment. My Insurer's agreed to fund an harassment claim. My Solicitor wrote one letter to my neighbours and within a week all the cameras actually overlooking our property were moved off.
There remains one camera that overlooks just outside our front garden and the road. This to me is still invading our privacy enabling the neighbours to see who is coming and going into our house which is not acceptable, so we will be requesting the removal of that last one as well.
People like this know what they are doing is not illegal, but they DO NOT want a Solicitors letter dropping on their mat with the threat of legal action.
If you have weird neighbours that are obsessed with your movements this might be the way forward. Its working for us and our neighbours are a nightmare with far too much time on their hands.

no mention of plants etc in deeds so hey ho il continue to trim and weed but is it illegal for her to photograph me?
we are now assuming these horrible neighbours have friends in the police force too.
What is the law on stalking and tresspass by 50-70 year olds?
my neighbour has taken down the fence to the side of his property to do some building works leaving the garden unsecured. Last night an intruder got in an my dogs 'saw him off' by barking. Because the fences between our properties are low will I be liable if the intruders get onto my property and the 3 dogs bite/knock him/them down?
