Your Confidentiality Rights if Reporting a Neighbour

Your Confidentiality Rights if Reporting a Neighbour

Why confidentiality matters when reporting a neighbour

Fear of being identified holds many people back from reporting problems with neighbours. Whether it is noise, anti-social behaviour or something more serious, the worry that your name will get back to the person you are complaining about is understandable. Nobody wants to make a difficult situation worse.

Most organisations you report to aim to treat your details confidentially, though the level of protection varies depending on who you contact and how serious the matter is. Understanding your rights can help you decide how to proceed.

Reporting to your council or housing association

For most neighbour disputes, issues like excessive noise, rubbish in gardens, or general nuisance behaviour are usually handled by local councils or housing associations rather than the police. However, the police can become involved if behaviour escalates or amounts to criminal conduct.

Before making a formal complaint, consider whether mediation might help. Many councils and housing associations encourage neighbours to try mediation first, which can resolve disputes without the confrontation of a formal process.

If you do make a complaint, your local council's Environmental Health team deals with noise complaints, smells, and similar problems. Housing associations handle complaints about their own tenants. Both types of organisation will generally keep your identity confidential when they investigate.

In practice, this means they can contact your neighbour about the problem without revealing who complained. They may refer to having received a complaint or observed an issue themselves, particularly if they install monitoring equipment or send an officer to assess the situation.

Complete anonymity is not always possible. If a complaint reaches a stage where formal action is taken, such as a noise abatement notice or a hearing about a tenancy, your involvement may become harder to conceal. You might be asked to provide a witness statement or give evidence. Before things reach that point, the organisation handling your complaint should explain what might be required and discuss your concerns.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Reporting to the police

When you report a crime to the police, confidentiality works differently. Officers will try to protect your identity where they can, but their ability to do so depends on several factors.

For minor matters, the police may be able to act on your information without naming you. They might increase patrols in the area or speak to the person concerned without disclosing their source.

More serious offences present a different picture. If a case goes to court, witnesses are often required to give evidence. The accused generally has a right to know the case against them, which can include knowing who reported them or witnessed the alleged offence. This is a basic principle of the justice system. Where witnesses face genuine risk, the court can put special measures in place, such as screens, video links, or in exceptional cases witness anonymity orders.

If you are worried about reprisals, speak to the police about your concerns. They can explain what protections might be available in your particular circumstances.

Your rights under data protection law

Organisations that hold your personal information must comply with data protection rules. Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, they should only share your details when there is a lawful reason to do so. Lawful reasons can include legal proceedings, safeguarding concerns, protecting someone's vital interests, or carrying out tasks in the public interest.

This means your local council, housing association or the police cannot simply hand over your name to a neighbour who asks. You can ask any organisation what personal data they hold about you and how they use it. If you believe your information has been shared inappropriately, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. The ICO will assess your complaint and may investigate whether the organisation followed proper procedures.

Before making a complaint, ask the organisation directly about their confidentiality policy and what happens if the matter escalates. Keep your own records of incidents, including dates, times and descriptions. If you are concerned about your safety, make this clear when you report the problem.

Reporting a neighbour is rarely comfortable. Knowing how your information will be handled can make it easier to take that step when you need to.

@td That sounds an exhausting situation and genuinely worrying that anonymity through Crimestoppers seems to have been compromised somewhere along the line. If you haven't already, escalate to the IOPC rather than just the local force, as internal complaints rarely go anywhere when officers are the ones being complained about. Citizens Advice or a housing solicitor can also help push back on the homelessness threats. Keep every recording and written log you've got, they're your best protection now.

Hi problem neighbours there has been cannabis issues on our street for 5 years I made anonymous reports to crime stoppers and police accused me of harassing neighbour and the whole street through the anonymous reports.

I made to crime stoppers and police also sent an email to parents landlord when trying to get evicted for allegedly harassing neighbour when reporting cannabis matters anonymously.

I have been threatened with wasting police time and also threatened with homelessness via the police and yet the cannabis issue still occurs on the street. The neighbour no longer lives at address and yet is still returning to cause issue's with a vibration through the night as well and told council was making false allegations in 2020 after parents arrest and he was release with no charges to this.

I changed my name via deed poll and police were still calling me by my original name until March 2023 and issued a resolution order for assault in previous name when neighbours father jumped me down the road and 2 harassment orders were issued in previous name in 2020.

I was accused of using the complaints process to avoid contact with police via the police commissioner for the area after requesting a right of review to my complaint when police were threatening and harassing through neighbours false allegations my solicitor made a complaint of neighbour and police harassment in 2020 and the pcso who visited me in March 2023 threatening me with wasting police time because I contacted another force outside of the area claimed our allegations were unfounded with out checking police records and also refused to speak with solicitor via stating would not deal with past issues.

The police are still trying to accuse my self of harassing neighbour when cannabis issues are still ongoing so if all you readers do make a report be prepared for harassment from police and always have recordings when reporting any issues about your neighbours.

Replying to someone who was asking what to do about a neighbours rubbish. If someone is dumping rubbish outside their house, especially household waste, is considered fly-tipping. I'd contact the council.

My neighbour, smokes weed, The Water Authority are trying to sort out a leak on shared ground and that the water are doing it free being a shared supply, he is saying we have to concent to it when I have good advicde we do not.

He is also saying that a shared drain is my responsibility to pay for fixing, when the same advice says no and he has accused me of not fixing it when all it needs is keeping clean in the shared pipe which I have been reliably told just needs occasionally cleaning and not something I need to pay for.

He is also claiming that someone I know is causing problems to a pet when the pet in question is under the vet for mobility problems partly due to age and a medical condition that is been treated.

He lives in a small property and is known to be aggressive to others and caused problems to other neighbours and is known to lie and cause problems.

What can be done to either stop him or get him to move?

I recently reported my neighbour for parking his car in front of my house and blocking two parking spaces. The complainant was to our housing association. The housing association came out and spoke to him telling him I had complained. Should this not have been confidential? It's created an atmosphere between us now and he's still parking in the same place.

Our neighbours HATE us and worse, are FIXATED by us. They have made 10 various complaints to authorities and police over the years ALL where found to be unsubstantiated and/or MALICIOUS.
We’ve given up and want to move - they watch us on cctv 24/7 and they never leave their home. What can we do ? If we sell do I have to say Weirdo psychopathic neighbours or nothing ? They complain about us not the house . We feel defeated.

My middle aged neighbour next door is bitter and racist and I have only recently found out after 6 years of living here! She has done something very very bad to us after gaining our trust .. it is a private matter that I cannot discuss on here for fear she may see it. I was desperate for her help with this matter and she helped me but then turned on me on stupid Facebook calling me all sorts of names and telling everyone I have dirty nappies in the house and dog crap everywhere which is TOTALLY untrue!! She called my boyfriend all kinds of racist names behind his back. She reported me about the supposed dirty nappies and now I’m scared I’ll be evicted even though my home is very tidy. Why do people do this kind of thing it’s rotten! What possesses someone to make others lives a misery?
Reallyhadenough. 17/04/2022 at 5:58 pm
The family that moved into the council house next door are very messy, they have lots of rubbish on there back and side gardens, black bags of general waste teaming with maggots, TVs Hoover's, broken bikes, prams and toy's galore, they don't put out the blue or brown bins at all and don't always put the black bin out, at first I turned a blind eye but it's been well over a year now and it's just getting worse, I've been round and spoken about it but nothing gets done, how do I complain anonymous and who do I contact please.
AmyW 14/04/2022 at 7:43 pm
I’m spending much time in our shared garden planting flowers and veggies. Last year everything was fine, but this year neighbour’s cat who walks on his own in our shared garden has chosen our flower beds and veggies bed to do his number2. It’s very frustrating to find every morning lots of smelly cats poo in the flowerbeds, also I haven’t put in any veggies yet cos I simply don’t want to get them grown through the cat’s poo...
I’m not sure whom this cat belongs to as I haven’t seen him with his owner, he always walks on his own. I’m tired to take his poo out every morning, it’s smelly and disgusting. Also it’s absolutely pointless cos the cat comes back every morning and simply does it again.
What should I do? Any advise is appreciated

We have new neighbours who have moved into a shared house by us. It has become apparent that they are using the house as a car sales outlet. They have been bringing cars and even long wheelbase vans to our cul-de-sac parking on the road repairing and even spraying them at the side of the road. I would be highly surprised if they are have a mot or tax let alone a parking g permit. Is there anything the council can do to stop this.

So my neighbour decided to take down my hedge without my consent, doing so he has raised the water table, so when it rains there is now going to be standing water. Then to compound matters, he has put up a 2 foot call within what I believe to my boundary, even after he was told not to do anything until I came back from back, as I work away from home. He waited a week and then sneakily put the wall up whilst my family was out, he intentionally waited until they went out. I put a letter through his mail box, pointing out a couple of facts:
1. Under the property act 1995, he has to give me 2 months written notice of what his intentions are, I have to reply with a letter to agree or disagree. He never did this.
2. The wall he has put up, has had no damp course completed, so guess what damp will begin to form inside the house.
3. He has build a wall on my property without my consent.

I've asked him to rectify all of the above or legal proceedings will begin.

Am I write in what I have put down above?

The person with access only turned up a few weeks ago he leaves a note on my dead neighbours door to take parcels 2 doors down then removes the note after delivery. My neighbour died 7 weeks ago and has no family.

moted 01/03/2021 at 9:05 pm
hi, Just to put the other side of the situation. We moved to a small village in Herts in Dec 2019. We own a rescue German Shepherd dog, as we live next to an alley, she tends to bark when other dogs go by, the barks last no more than 4 to 5 seconds, and as we have CCTV we can carefully monitor her behaviour. The worst day showed her barking for about 5 minutes in total all day. In September 2020 we received a letter from our Council saying that we had been reported , we had to keep a log for 3 months .In that time the complainant offered no evidence to the Council, and the case was closed. However, to our astonishment we received another complaint last week, from apparently the same person. We have to keep a log yet again despite our dog not constantly barking. The law needs to change. Why should a person be able to use anonymity to hide behind and produce no evidence whatsoever. Councils should be free to disclose the complainants details if they make unfounded allegations. The complainant is using the council to harass us, we have never even spoken to the person. Something needs to change, as once this one is over, he can do it again. That is wrong. My wife is on her nerves edge as he shouted at her last week, only he knows why, although neighbours tell us who they think it is, we don't definitely know, so cannot do anything.

Well It's very sad to read all these stories about hate and noisey neighborhood and drugs ect. Let me tell you mine story for about 7 years of Racism' Hate' and Unacceptable behaviour.
It's terrible now days there is not longer Respect for others.
When I called the police some don't want to give a incident Report at all .Mobile Homes are making additional dwellings and subleasing part if their homes to rent and gain profitable income.
Wich this situation is unpleasant since you don't know who is that renter?or any background check And terrible for the person who pay their rent all by them self's.

Mobile home Park association plays ignorant and asked how do you prove they rent their bedrooms or part of their homes?
I have couple neighbors Wich they all conspiracy into a hate and hostility towards my family.
Too much stress is ridiculous..many videos regarding tresspasing property damage...and persecution still on going..The solution We need to move away Ad keep PRAYING ?? that GOD IS OUR FATHER AND SEES EVERYTHING'S EVIL DOERS ARE DOING.
HE IS OUR REFUGE AND STRONGHOLD.
Fed up neighbour 03/10/2020 at 1:18 pm
Hi everyone looking for some advise if anyone has any. So here goes 2 1/2 years ago my upstairs neighbour (only the one person supposed to live here) moved in and parties every weekend for 3 weeks solid so we went to the local housing office myself and another neighbour and they said they would have a word which stopped it for a while then all of a sudden a full family move in not being racist but they are salamian and the majority of them are very loud well mines make a total exception mines are sound like they are walking about with microphones screaming every last word which I can make out every part of there conversation then he disappears and rents his house out for 1 full year to a very quiet family (by the way the housing knew this but had no proof and because everything was quiet they just left it) then the move out and its all back to square one the abso people got involved and told me to stay away from there door do not make any interaction with them they would deal with it this was at the start of lockdown the police have been phoned on many an occasion they even came 1 night with a breeding ram trying to put there door in for the fighting and the music but no one got arrested. Since then he now has his 16 year old daughter staying there and there are a load of school kids hanging about the house I called the police about this and the music and it took them 1 1/2 hours to come out by that time the house was almost empty except his daughter in it. I called my locals housing and they said because they are out of office there hands are tied but just keep calling the police and hopefully they will get the report to pull them in and the neighbour will get fed up getting pulled in by them he will just leave his flar. I’m sorry for the long rant but Iam tenge only one in the building paying full rent I work shifts and Iam not getting a proper sleep somethings I stay out the house just to get a proper sleep can anyone shed any light where I can go from this?? P.s the as o people told me to record everything which I have done and they have never got back I. Touch the housing said they handed it back to them because things went quiet for a while . Iam not moving home I love my house I just want them to go it’s getting worse I feel like Iam fighting a losing battle
Bubbles 26/09/2020 at 8:22 am
I've been living in my council flat for 8 years my neighbours underneath slams there doors at 6 in the morning shouts and swears at there kids I've addressed it to my housing officer and she said if I'm making a complaint she needs to tell the neighbours who it is making that complaint is that allowed?
Moted 18/09/2020 at 3:33 pm
What about people who make complaints with no substance? We have had an untrue complaint regarding our dog. TheCouncil have to investigate, yet we have no idea who has lodged the complaint or even why. Why should people be allowed to make anonymous complaints? My wife is much more upset than I am-that doesn't mean I am not upset-,and feels that someone had it in for us. Bearing in mind we moved into village just before Lockdown, so apart from immediate neighbours who are also dog owners, the only people we see regularly are dog walkers. It is not right that people can complain and mess with other people's lives and not reveal who they are. Especially when there is no substance to their complaint.
Bridie 08/08/2020 at 5:18 pm
Hi all, I made a complaint to the local council about my neighbours dogs barking, they were not happy obviously but I just didn't have the confidence to approach them because of mental health problems, well it all went pear shaped and they made it their mission to find out who'd done it, with letters to the council and adding neighbours names ect to it, saying how lovely this neighbour is ect ect, a witch and hate campaign is the only way I could describe it, well apparently they posted on FB that they'd done some searching and had ways and means of finding out and they did, not just me but 2 other people, must be neighbours as this person with the dogs had, had 3 other complaints regarding planning permission for building work they were doing so they know who they are too, they have told most ofther neighbours about me and probably them too, it doesn't bother me too much that as I've never been one to live in neighbours pockets and happy with just family and close friends here, what concerns me most is, that obviously my information has been leaked to my neighbour, not just me, 2 others as well, I rang the Data protection department of the local council and made a complaint that someone had obviously told them, they're looking for names so they can investigate but about 90 people have access to them files and unless they've been edited they cannot find out who it is, if they had any names they could investigate that person and see if they've looked at this file, my complaint has been filed, plus it seems that the other 2 people have complained from what the conversation with the Data protection people were saying, I did explain that leaking confidential information to the public could have dangerous reprisals, it was obviously someone they knew, if they are found out they will be sacked from they're position, I felt I was being fobbed off a bit, has anyone else experienced this, I'm not where i stand to be honest, it seems like a bit of a minefield.
Hadenoughofnextdoor 06/08/2020 at 11:40 am
Well I have rpivate neighbors that drill, bang, stench of paint and turps coming through my walls, can her mouth running constantly (not swearing thankfully) they have had fires and basically they act like they can do whatever the hell they want but if you have a dog that barks once or twice when someone is at the door then they will report you even if you had to leave the dog to go the hospital because of a stroke

I moved into my home 30yrs ago, brough my children up in that house, next door neighbours where bullies, and vagabonds, and may i let them get away with too much as i was a single parent bringing up 3 kids on my own, my kids all grew up and left home, but the next door neighbour did things to me daily, she layed stones in her garden and layed taupaulin on the ground it was held secure by 10 12" nails 3feet into my private property, hers was council, she threw cigy buts over burning patio furniture, she would discuss pictures hanging in my home with her daughter while looking though my window, her cat would use my newly sealled and pebbled shed roof attached to my property as a giant cat litter tray, leave dog poop right outside my back gate regularly, and bang on the walls all night long.her older daughter opened a bank account in her own name but my address. and started sending all her letters to my address. this too infuriated me, so i complained to the council and police. big mistake, the police started arresting me for things i had no knowledge of, i was arrested twice a week for 2 yrs. council despised me for whatever reason. i am a disabled lady with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, and a brain trauma, i didn't know what was going on i'm almost 60yrs old. i was took to court even though i never whent outside and lived m life in total darkness afraid to even open the curtains. i cried every day. the served a civil injuction on me, i trie dover 500 solicitors for help in co/cleveland to no avail, as soon as i said my name i was refused, so i whent to co/durham and found a solicitor, and whom he believes i am guilty of what ever , but got the injuction done away with, but in between all of this, i whent to live far away in darlington with a girl i knew, and cuncil posted a letter stating that i had continued to harrass the nighbours and so they have took it to court and asked the judge to serve me with 3 yrs or more in prison sentence, the girl i lived with had an important job and rang my soicitor and told him i lived with her so how can this be ? So somebody was making up dangerous lies about me, i put my lovely house on the market and moved far away into private rented housing and estate agent said the neighbors have brought the area down , while she is showing prospective buyer around my home they are coming out their houses with alcohol in hand and balling and shouting and kids screaming , she said either they will stop you from selling it or you will have to sell for peanuts which i had to do. £20,000 less than it is worth, police gave newspapers mug shots of me so everyone knew who i was and i am totally innocent of any wrong doing. I was a model many yrs ago and a beauty queen. i did a lot of charity work all my life for the town, and they have erradicated me from the archives.

Hello, I need some advise with regard to my neighbour.

His front garden is an eyesore, old microwave, various cardboard packages from purchases (TV, PC Screen etc etc) and general waste. I have asked him to please clean up his front garden and was told "if it bothers you so much you pay for it to be taken away".

In addition, because his back garden is up kept - grass and weeds currently waist high the fence is leaning over - I did asked him if he noticed the fence was leaning over before I could ask him to cut his grass and trim the edges as it was causing pressure on the fence he shouted "its your fence, your problem".

Any suggestions how to solve this (other then sell and move away) would be appreciated.

I live in a flat and all day and all night I hear people shouting ,crying ,banging things and what sounds like dragging.
They are so loud it is coming from the flat above me it sounds like they are right next to me they are that loud .
Then there is a strong smell of weed in the hallway I know full well people sell weed in this building because there is always gangs of men coming in different cars late at night .

Drug addict neighbour. Constantly sniffing and smoking Cannabis. Drugs are hidden in the fridge/freezer as you can continuously hear it opening and closing. Microwave always pinging through warming something up. People in and out of the flat. Cannabis stinks the whole block of flats out. There are children living in the same block of flats inhaling the 2nd hand smoke.

I have lived in my street now for nearly ten years. Unfortunately I have a elderly male nuisance neighbour, but two doors down, who quite clearly doesn't like animals of any kind. Even though there is a undone male tabby cat - who has attacked my own and caused vet bills - that lives closer to him than I do, he constantly insists that my cats are always defecating on his garden. He threw this at my window once, scaring my children and guests inside, and tries to "sneak" outside the front of the house and leave it by the cars parked outside my property. Our mutual neighbour once had to have an ambulance called to the house (which parked outside mine), and he did nothing but shout, swear and bib his car horn until the paramedics came out, when he released it wasn't for me, he scurried back inside and never went out in his car to my knowledge - clearly not in any hurry to leave to go anywhere then! I can't do anything outside as he stands at his front door and just watches me until I go back inside - no one who lives round here can do anything outside the front of their house without him coming out and just staring towards them. In the past, I have caught him scaring and chasing cats away from his house - we all back onto a main road, and unfortunately I have lost cats down there, who would never usually go anywhere near there! I suffer from anxiety and depression, and this has not helped - I have been put onto antidepressants because of all this, as I constantly feel on edge! In the last two weeks at some point he has acquired a "cat scarer" (it emits a very high frequency noise which animals do not like, therefore will hopefully avoid the area) which I don't really have a problem with - I don't want any animals near that area for their own safety! - but it's deafening, even to humans! I'd be surprised if other neighbours haven't complained about it already. I'm at my wit's end, I love my house and the location is brilliant for what I need now, but I can't live like this much longer. Can I report my neighbour to anywhere that would listen?

Hi, wonder if anyone can help or give advice
I and my partner have not long moved into his sister home after she suddenly passed anyway in July, so we have tuck on the house and also her two little dogs,

for the past 12 months the next door neighbour has this dog and it barks all day and night, we have asked nicely if she could try and control the dog as myself and my partner work shifts which include nights and we seem to never have a good night sleep because of this, ( I understand it is hard to control your pets but this is at 4 am, 6 am) and she does not tell it to be quiet or kicks it out in the garden and lets it bark yes at 4am.

going back 5 months a new neighbour has moved in next door to the one I am already complaining about, there are two adults and 2 kids and a newborn, the fella is clearly beating up his girlfriend which they ended up in the street and he was hitting her with a pole they obvs have relationship issues of some sort, but whilst they are fighting where is the baby? secondly, they have a new dog and its not a puppy, it has this horrible nasty bark - the fella has which I have seen hit the dog as the dog is yelping in the garden there so horrible to the pet which makes me so upset, but they lock it out for hours on end Rain, sun and the cold. the longest the dog has been in the garden is 5 hours of none stop barking

Iv contacted the PDSA they have asked for proof but they live 2 doors away so we can not really see into the garden however you can see if they come out but there obvs bigger than the dog, we record the horrible nasty barking but they won't do nothing to help,

The newborn I am unsure what to do here as really should I call for help on this?
and for the council ha they told me they send a report out to them but will show who has put the complaint in? which personally i do not want

Right now after losing my sister law who was only 30 has been very hard to deal with but right now i have two massive problems with my neighbours and no where to turn as I do not want it to come back to my addresss?

Any advise would be great

Hi im a mom with slow learning disability I've had new next door neighbour that moved in my area since 2018 but been put off reporting them because of some issues... I have been suffering with bad behaviour from them ever since they moved in and coming from this guy and his own Children make racist jokes about quran my religion islam saying "Oh that's a bad sound" ect and laughing and this was back in January 2019... and also every time when my 2 babies cry then him and his kids make so much noise and banging on the walls and sealing!! and causing trouble and gossiping bad about us saying we cause there damp in there house and blaming us for that and some other stupid stuff as well... I think they want us to move because they get irritated so easy and one time I was in kitchen doing food for my kids and I heard my next door neighbour saying OH she in the kitchen and he was swearing alot saying Iies about me... and today I smelt chemical paint coming through my house it was very strong and I just about had enough of this harassment and need help quick because it only just get worse and I suffer from anxiety because of them as well and I hate it here

I've had troublesome neighbours and after 3 years and countless complaints to radian housing they have done nothing. My family have received some vile abuse and had stones thrown at me and my car. Radian do absolutely nothing but speak to their tenants about the complaints which then gives the tenants a good idea of who has complained and things get worse. 3 years of hell now and radian housing have made things worse rather than improve things. Would love to sell my home and move but these people will make it difficult to sell.
Phil 06/04/2019 at 1:54 pm
Actually, people are put off from complaining as they have to declare it when selling, and could end up loosing thousands.

For 3 months my neighbours play loud music all the time they bang shout and argue. I live in flats, they stand on the walkway swearing drinking, threatening the neighbours who live under them. When anyone else makes the slightest noise when there in bed through the day the guy kicks off. They are constantly being reported to gipton council and they do nothing about this. Perhaps if someone rang yorkshire evening post they may do something about it.

Hello
I received an anonymous letter today and it had such a disturbing language about us and my kids as we are not white skinned..the letter stated that my children are ferrel kids and we are disgrace to the neighbourhood as just my kids play with their bikes and they leave the bikes outside my front garden..they don't leave it a anywhere else .
Please can anybody help me how I could I report this matter to the police or what should be done to prevent such things.
Wilma 21/03/2019 at 11:50 pm
Hi . I was reported by a neighbour for burning rubbish all year round and causing an obnoxious smell. I was informed by the council of this complaint . However I have provided proof that I recycle all my rubbish . How can I find out who reported me . I want to clear my name . I have contacted the freedom of information but they have decided not to give me the information. Can you please help me clear my name . Thank you

I hear constantly in the night my Arab neighbor, I am an Arab and I understand their language, quarreling. The husband's voice is incomprehensible and the wife accuses him of treason and cursing him with very ugly words
And I also hear that he hurts her and she is suffering. Today I heard heavy things thrown by one of them. Maybe, I do not know, perhaps one of them throw it on the other. But the sound of heavy vessels hit the ground. They live in the apartment under my apartment. Worse yet, they have a girl who is about a year and a half old she still cries and panic for 20 minutes or more. It always happens that day and their voices were very loud and worse than every time.
I feel it is my duty to do something for the girl but I do not want to reveal my identity. what should I do?

We live in a privately rented house. The 1st 2 years we had no issues with our neighbour as we were told by the letting office that an elderly gentleman lived there. To cut a long story short it actually came to light that it is the home of a drug dealer and he must have been "away" for a while. Our house now smells like weed all the time and there is shouting and fighting heard all hours. (You can hear it's drug deals gone bad) we and our other neighbours have gone to police and nothing has been done. Is that because we have done it anonymously?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/09/2018 at 11:21 am
Who owns the allotments? If the allotments are council owned, they may be able to take action. If the allotments are privately owned, contact the owners. Environmental health will be able to advise you if you can find a resolution.

I have lived in my property for over four years my problem is in the allotments there are Cockerells that start around 4am and it's constant all day I have not had a night sleep since I moved here I have been on sleeping tablets to no avail, they have woke my kids up my eldest has trouble getting to sleep and doesn't manage to get to sleep til after 2 so being woke up at 4am is making mine and my children's lives horrible I am constantly tired I can't sleep my kids aren't sleeping all night I don't know what to do as I can't make a complaint online due to not knowing what address the Cockerells are at
Ste 06/08/2018 at 11:01 pm
this is bull. Housing associations wont do a single thing if you report crime anonymously. Unless you are prepared to stand there is court and put both you, your property and your family at risk nothing will get done, The country is a joke.
Dave 01/08/2018 at 7:36 pm
We moved in to a semi detached property 6 years in an open plan estate and we have had issues since day 1. When we first moved in I had the dust caps stolen off my car parked in our drive. A few days after the neighbours had a party for their parents "wedding anniversary" this consisted of childrens (yes really) disco played through a PA at ridiculous volume the set only lasted about an hour and was played several times from mid day into the evening. A couple of weeks later we had a carbon copy re run this time for someone's childs birthday. We put up CCTV cameras which only covered our property. I had a neighbour storm round demanding to know why we had put cameras up and was outraged that it covered our front lawn. This was down to several neighbours using our front lawn as a shortcut and their children playing football on it. It came to a head when I found a man I'd never seen and his family having a snowball fight on our lawn. I went and told him to get off but when I looked out he was still on our drive a few minutes late, next thing the resident two door up comes running at me and then decides it might not be such a good idea but proceeds to tell me that he hates people like me who spoil everyone fun. I told him ? I just wanted to be left alone and didn't want people or their children on our property. He backed down and slunk off. A few months later he was jailed for attempted child rape on a 15 year old and his family moved out. However the incidents have still carried on whilst we have continued to tell people and their children to keep off our property. A couple of years ago I had some parent banging on my door threatening violence complaining I had sworn at his child. I hadn't and never swear in any of these incidents. The fact was I had never spoken to his child and I still haven't to this day. Instead of asking me what had happened, another child had apparently told him this story, he just kicked straight off on my doorstep at me. I had thought things had calmed down however today I had one of the wives let their youngest child wander up our drive now they know very well how we dislike this. I opened the door and asked her to get her kid off my drive At this point she exploded and told me how dare I talk to her like that, I'd only told her to get her kid off my drive. She then said my child has a name..How exactly am I supposed to know what the kids name is I never speak to them. Then she told me she would send her husband around. All that because I don't want someone uninvited to wander around on our property. I am concerned that we are now back where I was 6 years ago with a feud going on frankly I'm sick of it and would advise no body to ever buy a property on an open plan estate. The irony is the family in question has grown bushes along the side of their hose and put dividing blocks down the middle of their lawn. Frankly I hate living here but we will not be in a position to move for at least another 2 years due to work

Just looking for advice. My neighbour has a dog I consider to be behaving aggressively but she doesn’t think so. She was always quick to bring the dog inside if it was out the front when I went out there. Relations broke down when my mum went to my house while I was at work and the dog trapped her against the fence on the path outside our house, barking and growling at her. When neighbour came to bring the dog in, my mum told her she needs to sort the dog out as it’s aggressive. My mum then we raise but the neighbour banged on the door for 5 minutes demanding my mum come outside and yelling that my mum just doesn’t like dogs. After five minutes my mum left my house. She got halfway up the pavement towards our car before the neighbour ran out of her house, chased after her all the way across the road shouting. My mum got in the car. My dad and 7 year old son were already in the car waiting for my mum. It was a hot day so the windows were down. Neighbour stuck her head through the car door window shouting abuse and demanding my mum gets out and talks to her. My dad got out and apparently threatened to kill the dog if he ever hurt his family. She then threatened to call the police and my son was crying and distressed. The following evening the dog was running around her front garden barking and growling st 9pm at night so I tried to video it from the window as evidence should I need it. Stupid thing to do because she saw the flash! Since then she has made several snide remarks when I’ve seen her but I’ve ignored them. Yesterday she made another snide remark as I tried to leave my house with my three year old. I told her to shut up and she shouted at me, told me I’ve been hanging out of windows taking photos and that I must be a pervert taking photos of her kids in their underwear. Threatened that her dad is bigger than my dad (I’m not joking lol) and that her dad will go after mine if he says anything to her again. She shouted do much more abuse at me than that but can’t remember it all. Said she has contacted the police and told them my dad was tgrwTening to her and her dog and that she’s gonna tell them I’m a pervert. What should I do? She also says she has spoken to the RSPCA who have assessed her dog and done a report saying the dog not aggressive. I asked if I could see it but she said “she ain’t showing me nuffink”.

I have been reporting to the anti-social team for the last 4 years and I have not got anywhere. I live in a flat first floor their are 4 more flats in this block. I have a neighbor opposite me that is a drug user and has drug dealers coming in and out the flat all hours of the day an night, he also has dealers threaten him for payments and people who shot for him from outside when he doesn’t answer his door at times these people also constantly bang his door for a response which is disturbing my little baby who is now 5 months old I am terrified leaving my property I also have a neighbor who lives below who has mental issues when I complained last year the council offered him more support then me he Evan tried to force entering my property with a knife police was called but nothing was done. The anti-social team have told me I need to report all matters which I have done so but this has made matters worse for me. I am now suffering from depression being locked in my property all day an night I have had my doctor give me doctors letters in regards what is causing me and these have cost me £20 each time. My health visitor has also wrote to the council local Mp has wrote to the housing association and nothing has been done. What else can be done for me?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 27/04/2018 at 11:43 am
Just respond to the sender (we assume this is landlord) of the letter saying you left it there for 10 minutes while you put your shoes on and agree to attend the interview. At that time you could ask who reported you if it makes a difference.

Someone is making false complaints about me I'm pretty sure I know who as happened over few years on anything they can not just house I could probably prove this now if council told me who recently complained about me for being anti social as if I know for sure it wasnt a neighbor in one of 4 places around me I know only one other person miles away who knows what my neighbor's could to make a false complaints and pass It off as them as I would now get police involved as they are actually family member and somehow knew alexactly who my meeting was with from housing officers first name but they rent private new his last name and would have absolutely no reason to know this person as never been in council housing or lived in same area to have that officer anyway I they did

Neighbor has moved boundary fence of housing Association house. (Not aloud to do this)
I want to report it but I feel threatened by neighbour in the first place.
What should I do?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 03/04/2018 at 2:33 pm
You would need to seek professional legal advice really. If the extension is built on your property, it's trespassing , to we hope it should be relatively straightfrorward. Has the building inspector passed it yet? Talk again to both builidng control and planning.
Sticks 30/03/2018 at 3:23 pm
I have the upper part of a two storey Maisonette and my living over looks both the upper & lower maisonette gardens my neighbour has built a rear extension which not only obscures the view of my garden but the height and the width of the build encroach on my property by 6 inches & 18inchesrespectively . 6inches & 18inches are built up on to my property ,Part of my air vent brick has been cemented over ,And now when i open my landing window i can touch the roof of the extension dispite an 18inch gap from window sil to skirting board
The council approved the building plans despite being shown photographic evidence of the encroachment and member of the Councils Planning department visiting the property.
any advice would i have case to go to court with ?

I own my flat but the adjoining property is rented out to local council tenants, the latest adjacent to me are noisy, inconsiderate, playing music, chanting, shouting and hoovering at all hours (literally) disturbing my sleep and relaxation every night.

I have reported to Anti Social team over a month ago, who said they would come back to me and have not so I complained to the council complaints team, nothing.

If your local Council won't help you, what am I meant to do? Where else can I go next?

Contact your local PCSO and environmental health, they should be able to take action to help with this.

We believe belong to to the 1st house next yo the flats on sneyd hall road these neibours are constantly parking in the driveway which our access to parking..number 35a are constantly banging and have graffiti on walls which looks an eyesore ..we have youths taking drugs in the communal areas urinating and spitting it's a disgrace
ProblemNeighbours Editor 26/01/2018 at 10:08 am
Keep on with your complaints to the Housing Association and environmental health. They should do more than simply send letters, they have power to take further action, such as arranging for the garden to be cleared out and then re-charging the resident etc.
Amanda 24/01/2018 at 8:31 am
Hello, I live in a flat. My view from my balcony is over the neighbours garden. It is full of piled up rubbish, domestic waste and dog fecals. They simply never take out the bin for collection and don't recycle. My husband offer to help them to clean the garden and get rid of the rubbish but they said they will do it themselves. They haven't. I have already contacted the health and environmental agency, the council and the housing association several times. They send them a letter but nothing has changed. I am desperate to move away but can't sell my flat for the same reason.

Councils will not usually investigate anonymous complaints but they are usually willing to keep details of the complainant confidential.
Mamet 08/11/2017 at 11:45 am
This environmental services is joke. It say that if you report anonymously in most case councils will investigate. This is no true, and is loose information with no definite help. I have live many area in UK, and in some area have see problems and other neighbors say they report problems but councils use any way they can to not bother do things about problems. I have say about man who let him dog foul all on street and in people front gardens and no on lead while he outside him house fixing cars to sell on Internet (no permission or proper thing in place for do this) him whole life overflow on to other people's life. (Many olds people's in this street). But council no interest in this. I have people's tell me in before that people they are complain about can find out who is say this about them to council. I know this true, it happen to me to. I wish I had job in environment place in council. Make all day hide behind rules so not have to bother help people. People who make problem for other already know what they can get away with do. So environmental office is waste of time. No one want to help. Is just made up job to make people's think someone do something.

Hi
I am writing this letter with reference to my neighbours. Well not the couple just her. She's
Always complaining about my dog, if he barks I bring him straight in. There is just no reasoning with her to the point now that she has left nasty letters, also her language and attitude is disgraceful. My main concern is last bonfire night
They had fireworks directly in the entry where my garden fence ends. This caused so much distress to my dog and I know it was done deliberately. I mean there is a lot of entry and no animals in other houses. I am greatly concerned this is going to happen again and am starting to feel victimised. What can I do to stop this happening again this year as my dog needs to be able to access the back garden for toileting.
Please advise.
Toosey 21/10/2017 at 8:18 pm
Convinced my neighbour had reported me to the authorities as unfamiliar vehicles began parking along the road. We have had many spats in the past and now don't acknowledge one another, but I seem to be the guilty party. A lady visits the neighbour (victim support possibly) as she has only recently appeared since these occurrences. Nothing has been said or any written communications sent to me, but it all seems strangely worrying on my part and my stomach is churning constantly. My husband said it would be foolish for my neighbour to take that to Court and would be too expensive. The Police wouldn't bother with it and the Magistrate or Judge would throw it out. They would no doubt tell us both to go home, apologise, shake hands and grow up. Hope this is the case as we live directly opposite each other.

My neighbour is being evicted for antisocial behaviour. The court have granted the housing association, who owns the property, a Possession Order with a warrant attached.
Unfortunately my house is connected to this neighbours. Myself and my Daughter have been through a year of sheer hell. I originally raised the issue with the housing association, kept diary sheets, had noise recording equipment etc.
I was left a voicemail by the housing officer yesterday saying he couldnt tell me the exact date the warrant is to be executed. Is this correct? Many thanks.

Hi, I reported a person who was putting his 4yr old childs life in danger. She was riding a illegal quad bike on the road while the father and family stood there watching. I called police and they arrived 30 mins later and missed them. The father was asked tho attend the police station and give an explanation. The inspector told him that I reported him and the father turned up at my door threatening to kill me as well as setting fire to my house. He was with 3 other mates as he is a gutless drug dealer who lives in a caravan outside on a drive in my culdisac. I'm not scared of him as he is scum of the earth. Was this right to put me in such danger?

You can make a complaint about their behaviour if it has some foundation. The best thing to do is to see a solicitor (some have the first half hour session free) or Citizens' Advice.
Lil 23/11/2016 at 8:30 pm
If someone makes complaints against you and they are untrue, even though they are ringing up housing and making anonymous complaints, which could jeopardize your tenancy is there any legal way of taking this further - ie court and making them present the said complainant to get things sorted out? or are they just left to ring up and complain to their hearts content?

ProblemNeighbours Editor 27/09/2016 at 11:03 am
Your landlord should be able to help if this is such a problem. Are there any measures that the landlord could take to minimise the noise from the doors closing perhaps? Unless this occurs very late into the night/early mornings, it's unlikely that enviromental health would be able to help.

To anyone seeing this: DO NOT CALL THE POLICE FOR ANYTHING
They are trying to charge me with "wasting police time" because I have not given them a statment regarding my current situation, they have never asked me for a statment. I have two numbers and an email address but apparently I am uncontactable and they know my address. I had issues with a previous neighbour which nothing ever happened and they are seeing this as me wasting poice time and making up reports because THEY choose not to do anything about my complaints.
image that, I went ot them as a victim and all they have done is research me and pass on my details to third parties
this is insane
just dont call them for anything please

do I have a legal right to leave a fixed short term tenancy agreement if the neighbours upstairs constantly smoke cannabis and smoke in general that blow into our flat all the time and most worringly into my 12 year old daughters bedroom?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 06/07/2016 at 2:12 pm
Complain to the housing manager - if they were investigating a complaint made by someone else, then your name should not have been mentioned.
Cindryx 05/07/2016 at 11:04 pm
A while ago my neighbour rang my housing manager to complain about some antisocial behaviour from other neighbour kids. The housing manager came to speak with me as it involved my gas meter, so i spoke with him and told him everything. Next he sent a formal warning letter to the antisocial neighbour stating that I was the one who complained and he put a detailed explanation of everything i said. I contacted the manager and told him that he has put me and my two young kids in danger. He should have asked my permission before doing something like this seeing that i wasn't the one who phoned him in the 1st place. He has since written to the anti social neighbour stating that i have removed my complaint hence the formal warning was removed. I since live in fear of their intimidating look. What can i do?
ProblemNeighbours Editor 08/06/2016 at 2:33 pm
Just ask for permission to hold a party next time?
ClaireLou 07/06/2016 at 12:52 pm
A friend of mine is feeling a bit intimidated by the landlord and other neighbours. She held 2 children's parties in May (both finshed by 8), where she had bouncy castles. She lives in a block of flats and both times a neighbour has put in a complaint because of the noise (apparently children aren't allowed to be happy in her block). Apparently, at the 2nd one we were all drunk and doing drugs, which unless her 3 year old is a dealer, this is not the case. Also, the only block of flats on the whole estate to have received this letter, is my friends but the whole estate is owned by the same landlord. They requested that any and all parties are to have permission from the landlord (just the one block, remember) and yet none of the other blocks need to obtain permission. This to me feels like the housing officer has taken a personal dislike to my friend (not the first time this has happened with this housing officer) and I just want to know what she can do about it. She's contacted her landlord but it appears that they will do nothing. I've also told her to contact Citizen's Advice, to see if they can help. Is there anything that she can do in the meantime?

Newly moved into new house, nice residential road with typically respectful neighbors. The neighbor on our right has been playing ridiculously loud techno music - to where the bass vibrates our home all of yesterday day throughout a BBQ event, right through to 2:30am. The party continued all day today (Sunday!) from 3pm and is still at large currently. This has been repeated on numerous occasions and is restricting sleep, the use of our garden and general happiness in our home. We can not afford to move again however need it to desperately stop. How can we report in confidence?

When I say to chat to me, I meant environmental health themselves. Like do they come to your home to go over your complaint?
Leighliee 05/04/2016 at 1:42 pm
If I wanted to make a complaint about my neighbours leaving rubbish at front of the property, would I be able to contact environmental health, and it remain anonymous?
Would they ever, in any circumstances, come to my house to chat to me???

Can the police give my mobile number to someone I have complained about.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/03/2016 at 12:51 pm
if you think these threats are serious your should report them to the police. If the bikes are being revved for a long period of time on a daily basis, your environmental health office is the place to make a complaint.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 29/03/2016 at 11:42 am
Your local police will come and check on these to assess whether anyone's privacy is being impeded.
Gardner 27/03/2016 at 4:38 am
My neighbours are revving there motorbikes and laughing about it and when I complained to them they told me where to go and animated that i would be dealt with.

Im now a little worried. And the neighbours are scared to report it.

What can I do about cctv on a neighbours house. 4 cameras in fact. At least 2 filming outside of the front garden boundaries. It also films on a pavement a road and the opposite pavement No signs saying filming in progress..
ProblemNeighbours Editor 14/03/2016 at 11:43 am
Speak to the neighbour first. If that doesn't have any effect and the noise is happening at night times (eg past 11pm) then definitely contact your Environmental Health Officer.

We are a family of four with two little girls aged 1 and 4 living in a ground floor flat. The upstairs neighbour has been banging on his floor, our roof really loudly since 6 30am and has woken us all up. He does this often at all times of the day and it really upsets me to the point of me having anxiety attacks and it really scares my children. He says he does it to get back at us for making a noise which is rubbish because we are a quiet family and have been fast asleep all night. He does it on A Sunday when we are all in the kitchen having dinner, he bangs so hard I get scared the roof might cave in. I'm assuming he is throwing heavy objects to for it to be so loud.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 01/02/2016 at 11:26 am
Your environmental health officer will usually be able to keep your details confidential. If it's a police matter you can try crimestoppers.
Pet 29/01/2016 at 11:40 am
Why is there no advice or help that can report a definate complaint through text I am dumb literally an I don't want the complaint/offenders knowing I reported it , or do I just ignore the crime when there's kids involved in the thick of it all , as I'm not going into a station an obviously can't phone

Hi There

I need some advice there was a disturbance in the communal area of my block of flats, we are used to that around here usually always the same neighbours having a domestic dispute.

However this time I think there was some sort of scuffle or something and the fire alarm was set off during the argument.

Therefore I ring the housing association to get someone out to turn off the fire alarm and I told her there had been some sort of argument and I believe it had been set off during this time, and I assumed it was number 44 as we were used to this.

The customer services lady then goes and rings number 44 or one of the neighbours and tells them that I had said there was an argument coming from inside their flat, next thing I know I have the neighbours from 44 shouting in the communal area saying "he rang them up and he said there was an argument coming from inside our flat"

Really I only rang up because I wanted the fire alarm to be turned off, was just giving a reason for why I think it went off.

This will probably cause some friction between my neighbours now, I am just wondering if the housing association have any legal responsibilities to keep my phone call confidential.

I did ring them back to complain that my confidentiality was broken and have asked for their customer services manager to ring me, unfortunately the housing association I am with is really really poor so I doubt I will even get a phone call back.

Any advice on what I can do, is there anywhere I can report my housing association etc?

Hi my neighbor is playing Korean gambling games morning and night and it is very annoying and I can't sleep anything I can do
ProblemNeighbours Editor 21/09/2015 at 2:06 pm
Have you tried contacting your local police/police community about this?
Alice 20/09/2015 at 5:56 pm
Have problems with next door neighbours because of my disabled dad. One throws food over the fence and parks in my dads disabled bay. The other thinks its funny to drill into the back of the wall. Both gives us abuse if we confront them. Both just simply think they are above the law.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 10/09/2015 at 12:49 pm
If she is running a business, the planning department may be able to act. Especially if there are local conditions relating to commercial operations in a residential area.

I live opposite a house used by a prostitute - she lives there with her partner/pimp and 17 year old daughter - there is a steady stream of clients throughout the day.

I live on a residential estate where many promary school age children live.

Anything legal I can do to curtail her activities?

My neibourghs are violent and racist towards my mother and anyone who enters our property. Constalty we get abuse from the female. She acts all innocent "single mother of little girl" yet is an obsolte vile woman who constantly abuses me or my mother. Police does't do anything.

I live in Hampshire and wish to report a neighbour to Environmental Health anonymously. You mention the use of certain agencies. Can you give me contact details for one please.
ProblemNeighbours Editor 22/05/2015 at 2:37 pm
@K. This is the kind of behaviour that you should report to the local police.

My neighbours started throwing tea and coffee over my husband and my car. They've now started throwing some blue liquid over them. We own our properties so wondering who I could report this to as it's annoying having to rinse it off every morning. I know who it is as I've seen them do it, so has another neighbour. Thanks

@secret-for-safety. Only you can make this decision. Many will say that we have a duty to look out for others in our community and to report anything suspcicious. Others will say that there are lots of strange goings-on and harmless rows which have nothing to do with us, so we should just let them be. Crimestoppers is one way to report a crime anonymously. The other thing you could do would be to get to know the girlfriend/wife a bit more...you may find that reveals more about their relationship which could help your decision. Sorry we haven't been more helpful.
secret-for-saftey 15/03/2015 at 9:47 pm
I think my next door neighbor is violent towards his girlfriend/wife. I work early mornings, and once I personally saw him holding her by her neck outside their house, she was crying and he was saying something angrily behind her. Both went inside when they both noticed me walking past: its a semi detached house.

Seeing this has made me question every little thing I have heard since moving here (I live with a family member, we rent). I feel really guilty, and tonight for instance (15/03/2015) though I am not fully certain, I think I can hear her crying next door. I really don't know what to do because what if what I saw back then was a one off, and what I'm hearing is actually the T.V? back then he could have been drunk for all I know: it was between 4:15am and 4:25am. But what if I'm right and he is abusing her?
He acted/acts like a really nice guy, and I was completely mind blown by what I saw since I couldn't believe someone who was so nice could treat someone like that.

I want to do the right thing, but I'm scared because like I wrote: I was seen. So he would know it was me if I reported it. I have been told that I wont be able to do anything anyway, since unless the victim comes forward, I have no evidence, nor can anything be done unless she reports it. So what should I do? Should I report it anyway and hope for the best and risk everything: where I live including my own safety as well as the safety of my brother, or do I wait and hope she comes forward?
I don't really trust the police in my area either...so what or what can I do without it being known I have said or done anything?

Hi our neighbour at the back of our bungalow, has put a mobile home in his garden and his daughter her partner and baby are living in it, it over looks our garden and then to add insult to injury he then puts a children's play house thing in his garden, it is not one you buy from argos its one you would fing in a play park , it towers above the six foot fence I would say its about 10 to 11foot high a d the kids are staring in all 4he time and my dogs go mad with it does he need planning permission, also surly its classed as another dwelling and council tax should be paid be advise me as its even stopping us sitting in our garden and blocks us seeing the lovely sunsets thank you .......
