Your council's environmental health team handles far more than most people realise. They're often a quicker route to a fix than the police, who generally won't get involved in noisy neighbours, smoky bonfires or rat problems.
Environmental health officers have legal authority under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the Noise Act 1996 and the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. They can investigate, serve notices and take matters to the magistrates' court.
Services vary between councils, so check your local authority's website for specifics.

Air quality and smoke: Smoke from a neighbour's bonfire, frequent barbecues at your boundary, factory fumes or problematic wood burners. No law bans garden bonfires, but regular smoke stopping you using your home normally can be acted on. Pests: Rats, mice, wasps, bedbugs and cockroaches. Where the source is a neighbouring property or overflowing commercial bin, the council can require the owner to deal with it. Dogs: Persistent fouling on pavements and parks can lead to fixed penalty notices. Concerns about a dangerous or nuisance dog are shared between the council and police. If you've been attacked or believe an attack is likely, call 999 or 101. For ongoing worries about aggressive behaviour or poor conditions, contact environmental health or your local dog warden.
Food hygiene: Report unhygienic cafés, takeaways, restaurants or food shops. Officers carry out inspections behind the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme run with the Food Standards Agency, and can inspect premises, take samples or close a business down.
Fly-tipping, litter and graffiti: Dumped rubbish on streets, alleyways or private land is taken seriously. Identifying who's responsible can lead to fixed penalty notices or prosecution. Graffiti, fly-posting and litter linked to a particular business are also council matters. Householders have a legal duty of care for their own waste: rubbish piled up and attracting vermin can be addressed too.
Contaminated land and water: Suspected chemical or fuel leaks should be reported. Pollution affecting rivers or groundwater may also need reporting to the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA in Scotland or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
Housing conditions: Private tenants with serious unresolved problems such as damp, mould, broken heating or unsafe wiring can ask environmental health to inspect under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System. Council and housing association tenants should use their landlord's complaints process first, then the Housing Ombudsman if needed.

Before you contact the council
A private conversation often sorts things out. People may not realise their bonfire smoke drifts into your kitchen, or that their dog barks while they're at work. A polite word or short note is often enough.
If that fails, or you don't know who's responsible, the council is the right next step. Keep a diary of dates, times and how the issue affects you: officers will ask for this evidence. Most councils let you report problems online by searching for your local authority plus "environmental health" or "report a nuisance".
Once a complaint is made, officers will investigate, contact the person or business responsible, and escalate through warning letters, abatement notices and court action if the problem continues.

Common questions
When should I contact environmental health about my neighbour?
Contact environmental health when there is a real and ongoing problem: persistent noise, pests, smoke, smells, fumes or unsafe conditions. They cannot help with one-off events, ordinary household sounds, or disputes that are really about personal differences. Keeping a short diary of dates and how the problem affected you strengthens any complaint.
What can environmental health actually do?
Officers can investigate, fit noise monitoring, serve abatement notices and, if those are ignored, prosecute or carry out work and bill the owner. Many complaints settle at the warning-letter stage. They cannot act on hearsay alone: you usually need to be willing to be named as a witness if the case goes to court.
Will my neighbour be told who complained?
Officers will not name you, but it can be obvious from the nature of the complaint. If you are worried about retaliation, say so when you make the report and ask what protection is available. Mediation services through the council may be a calmer route in some cases.
The ash trees have grown in recent years both in height & girth & are now taller than the Kings Ave house they're alongside - their bases are all 2-3m from that house & parts of their higher canopies have grown over the roof of the house.
A few weeks ago I was at the bottom of our garden & found a piece of brick on top of our compost bin. I looked up at the Kings Ave house & noticed a brick missing from a balustrade - a section of the roof that the branches from our nextdoor neighbour were knocking against. It's fair to assume the branches had dislodged the brick - the Kings Ave house's other brickwork is not in a poor state of repair.
I contacted the owner of the garden flat of Kings Ave to warn them about falling debris, especially concerned that they have small children who play in the garden. They had apparently contacted my nextdoor neighbour last year with concerns about the trees - both for direct damage & subsidence. They contacted my neighbour again after I'd told the about the fallen brick (they also realised another brick has been dislodged on a chimney stack) & requested something be done to remove the threat of further damage.
There has been an exchange of correspondence but my neighbour is denying he has any responsibility for the branches overhanging the Kings Ave house & is telling them they have to sort it out themselves.
Obviously, my neighbour has a duty of care which he appears to be overlooking.
My position is that I'm concerned for everybody's safety - including that of my own family who would appear to be at risk given I've already found a chunk of brick & various shards of masonry around our compost bin.
I appreciate the Kings Ave residents are doing their best to have the situation resolved but it's not looking like a straightforward friendly resolution is going to be found. If I were to contact an EHO, who would my complaint be against?
Most councils have a general complaints process on their website where you can report various neighbourhood issues. Look for sections about "environmental issues" or "neighbourhood complaints" on your council's site. Some councils also have dedicated teams for dealing with overgrown gardens or accumulations of rubbish if they pose health risks.
If the mess includes things like rats, dangerous waste, or structural hazards, Environmental Health would definitely be interested. Otherwise, you might need to contact your council's planning enforcement team or neighbourhood services department. They can advise you on the best course of action.

Been in touch with all agencies, tenants have been told multiple times but nothing changes. If anything it has become worse.
I can hear there every move and sound. i hear crashing and banging noises all day long until they are all asleep.

It does need clearing up and she’s not around to do it. My mum recently passed away and it’s her funeral on Wednesday the 10th of April and the hearse is leaving from my house, with family and friends coming as well, it’s so embarrassing and upsetting that it will be there for people to see. 10 years and they have these huge trees (birds of paradise ) with extremely sharp limbs
and full of liquids which smells horrible .... when we started living here we had no problems just trimming the trees , but now over the years they have grown so tall , we no longer have sun
in our pool ... and when those limbs fall it is very scary also , we requested many times

A while ago they got a quad, they stored it in the outhouse. Spilled petrol and didnt bother to clean it. The smell carried from my utikitynroom (former outhouse) all the way through the house for a week. Hesd buzzing tired sickly etc.

Goodness knows how she’s managing to feed that many animals but surely with all of those people on the house and they many animals it’s a health hazard. Her house just smells like pee it’s disgusting.
now like 10 years later that small bush has overgrown soo much it’s coming into my garden and onto the roof of my shed which I can’t reach onto as it’s very tall which has asbestos can’t remove as I’m poor

I have reason to believe shes hoarding old food as it smells like a corpse.
I have no idea why she's doing this but I know she suffers from mental health issues and when I raised this with our landlord (who obviously spoke to her about it) she started screaming from her flat - which we can hear - about how we were going to pay for getting in her business.

Landlord must be aware, as been told not to use the access anymore, but to go round and use a secondary entrance. You cannot imagine the smell !!!!

Her husband had to place additional panels under the fence because of the gap her pressure wash created.

She also attacked the land opposite her property cutting down all shrubs and bushes and again pressure wash that soil.
I did tell her not to do it because it is not her land and we had birdnest season

Where can I report this problem? Because I try to find something on Torbay Council site but I could not see anything.
Has a bonfire going most nights. Mainly late in the evening. They burn all there household waste and his also a builder so I know he burns stuff he shouldn’t. There is often big thick black smoke and explosions. I worry what my kids are inhaling from the smoke.

Our neighbours behind us have put a huge trampoline right against our hedge which is only 20 ft from our property.
There can be up to five kids in it who constantly shout and scream.
The noise is so bad that it penetrates throughout our property with no escape .
Totally irresponsible behaviour from the parents who just close their back doors and let them get on with it .
Of course the mence is at the bottom of their garden ??.
We can't enjoy our garden with this noise.
My husband and I are both in our 60's and I feel we deserve a little peace and quiet , and not having to switch up the radio or put in ear plugs .
We're not grumpy towards kids at all, I still work with children .We brought our own two boys up at this house but wouldn't let them our neighbours.
We know that kids get excited and make noise but this is totally unacceptable ??
The problem I have is that there are a number of pigeons that live in this courtyard and my landlord apparently never cleans the area for some unknown reason. This leads into the real issue that when I open my bedroom window, which overlooks the courtyard, the air coming in constantly smells like a dirty bird cage.
I haven't approached my landlord yet about this as I don't want to make unnecessary waves if I don't have to. I like to be a quiet Tennant who pays on time and has nothing to say about my neighbours.
However, if the law is on my side, I very much want my landlord to clean up this mess so that I and the other tenants can enjoy our property better. Any advice on what to do about this would be great.
They are social housing and their fence is a mess, along with the front garden.

I have complained to the council multiple times over the course of 2 years. Have had pest control add preventative measures in my property, and pesticide. As a result I have had a dead rat located under a floorboard or in a wall. The smell was aweful. That's not the worst part. This all happened while wife was in hospital due to give birth.
The council have been informed about all of this. The problem of rats from next door and waste is getting worse. The property is tenanted. And the tenants have clearly been the root cause of the infestation.
I've spent thousands on pest control at my.own property. The experts have visited next door and have said that the source of the problem is from them.
Who can be held accountable?

When she came back the problem started, each night when no one is around she throws food out into the garden. It’s attracting fox’s, mice and fly’s. I have contacted the letting agency as I don’t want any contact with her, she is very rude and shouts at people. Nothing has been done yet. The other day I found bones, sausage rolls and today there was cooked pasta all over the grass.

Several years ago I requested that the occupiers control the area - to be told that the gardener did not have time to do so !
Two years ago I paid a gardener to completely clear the border in my garden of all plants and the brambles that had suckered .
Last year I went to discuss this issue but the householders were not at home due to being away whilst restriction was imposed on travel - the person looking after the garden in their absence said that he had the equipment and would cut the offending growth back - this however did not happen !
At the begging of this week I went to the house to discuss the problem - they were isolating and requested that I return today - which I did .
I was told in no uncertain terms that they would not be undertaking any form of control to this area as they had enough to do with the garden that is at the back of the house and that can be seen from the house . I could however get a gardener to deal with this nuisance but without any intention for paying for this service themselves / or deal with it myself . There is absolutely no intention of accepting responsibility for the state of this plot of land . I had invasive abdominal surgery two years ago followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy - of which they are aware - hence my inability to control this problem last year.
It is causing a great affect on both my physical and mental health .
Incidentally the house is owned by Liberal party supporters - one of whom is the councillor for Panshanger.

I have a neighbour opposite me, and they do party ones in the month. I don't mind the party but after midnight they are so loud the friend's shouting, girls screaming, I am a girl then I know how loudly I can be but thats to much . People work all week and they're need rest on the weekend . Can I do something with that after 11pm or 12 pm ? when the noise don't stops?
Also on the other side neighbour's front garden is completely overgrown with brambles and I have to keep pushing them back or they will spread into our garden. Can they be made to cut and clear?
See the person that is how bad it is and now the front garden has just been left to its own means. Please advise as I am going round in circles please.

We have notified our landlord Karbon Homes over a one year period (which I have copied of emails sent to them), but they just seem to ignore us stating its nothing to do with them.
Although the weather is wet at the moment (it is going to warm up), has a dual swing in his part of garden which the kids use, but it is that overgrown at the moment and all kinds of rubbish could be hidden including sharp objects.

Their back garden is massively overgrown and litter also appears in the passageway. The fence is not sturdy enough and is not keeping the overgrowth out of the access path.

What can we do?
Looks like they have no respect for his neighbours, there is a law against using power tools and building work at the weekends, he has constantly drilling, on Saturday afternoon sanding and god no what else, he has a dog that runs riot and has attacked several people since September 2020. And that’s what the residence of Meeds road pay their council tax for. For a neighbour to be a constant nuisance.
He has 8 geese which he houses on the other side of the fence. They are quite noisy at times. He also keeps a Cockerell which forever crows at all hours through the night.
And the last one is he also puts all of the chickens and geese dropping under an open lean to for his compost just on the other side of the garden fence, which cause so many flies in the summer months that we can't enjoy our time in the garden or even enjoy any food we have to eat without having to swat the flies away.
What is my solution to this problem?RAN
I am concerned for the welfare of the pigs as their enclosure is very small and you can often hear them squeal.
Also i dont think they have all the relevant licences, CPH no or registered as a small holding to be able to keep such animals.
This causes so many problems with pests.
Who do I contact to look into this as RSPCA are not interested.

My neighbours moved in a month ago since then he is keeping a bag with rubbish in front of his yard and today he added a second one . The yard is very small very near to the street Main Street and my home. The houses are facing the main road for God sake . What is wrong with some people ?! When you stay with the rubbish thrown in front of the main door the nasty people will throw even more rubbish at you . I am tired to clean up .from the street . What can be done about my neighbours?

I did the same as CAL09 and unsurprisingly we had a visit from the council. Unfortunately sometimes the word 'racist gives some people a card to do whatever they like. You automatically assume that CAL09 is white, just like you'll assume that i am because we have to be don't we?

Should we just put up with this then? We have nowhere to turn as the council's fear of being racist just plays into it. It's perfectly fine for groups of men to gather honking and spitting it up on the pavement, revving the engines of their cars, beeping their horns, selling drugs, that's fine. Everyone should be able to enjoy their homes without the encroachment of other people, you shouldn't have to wear earplugs to drown out the racket and you shouldn't feel embarrassed when your family visit because they don't have piles of fly tipped rubbish all over their own street and you do. First the smell coming from the bins means we cant sit in our own Garden as the smell makes us feel sick, we sat in our Conservatory today with the window open and again the smell meant we had to close the window.
I have 2 Kids who normally stay in the garden for most of the day but they don’t want to go outside anymore saying the smell is to bad.
Secondly we are getting rubbish thrown over our wall exactly where the bins are so it looks like people are throwing rubbish into the bin and missing which means it comes in our garden.
One of my kids is nearly 2 and we are also scared of him picking up the waste in case it is something sharp or worse

It's had such a bad effect on all of our lives going from a home we loved to one that we hate and makes us anxious as soon as we come home. It's also a housing association property so we can not physically afford to move out (we both work full time), have joined home swapper sites for the last year (which nobody wants to swap to a 2 bedroom flat in our area - for work and our kids schools) and joined the housing association's internal transfer list (which we've been told by the housing association we'd be lucky to offered a place within the next 20 years!!!).
We feel trapped and miserable with no idea what to do next, ANY advice is really appreciated.
I knocked on the door and introduced myself politely roughly 2 months after they moved in. I explained the walls and floors were very thin and asked if they could be a bit more mindful with their stomping, slamming doors and DIY at irregular hours as it was waking up my young kids to which they said there wasn't much they could do as they have to walk around and had already laid a new carpet (which I believe is the problem as the old neighbors carpet stopped EVERY bit of noise). They agreed to install more underlay to see if that helped which I thanked them profusely for. If they did do that, it did NOT help in the slightest.
They then bought new bass heavy sub speakers, attached them to their walls and started to play loud drum n bass every day from lunch untill after dinner - not fun when having to work from home and 2 young kids at bedtime. After another month of this, I contacted the landlord who could hear the music through requested recordings and rang them to say keep it down and sent a warning letter (which thankfully stopped the music!).
The landlords also asked me to try and record stomping and banging which proved impossible on the app they provided me with (30 second noise recording phone app) as it always took too long to open and record, almost like the neighbors knew this and were doing it on purpose. So the landlords asked me to call the council and ask for recording equipment to be set up in my home. We didn't want to do this as we don't want our neighbors kicked out of they're genuinely trying to keep it down so we wrote the neighbors a note to say it was having a huge effect on us and to just remind them about the noise aswell as my phone number if they wanted to talk about it or of we were too noisy. To which they called us and asked us to let them know when it was noisy via text and they'll sort it - Great! Hoped this would be an end to it.
A month later I text them for the first time when it sounded like men were wrestling above our living room and were going to come through the floor, to which they lied and said nobody was home and we must be mistaken (their window was wide open with loud voices/laughter inside and a pile of shoes outside their door). Same thing happened a week later when we text again (lots of noise, they text saying no-one in).

I live in Eastbourne in a Victorian conversion block of flats. There is an over flow pipe that has been redirected so that if there is an issue with over flow from a toilet cistern it now cascades onto the side of my flat and over my court yard (I live in a lower ground flat). This is running directly over a ventilation shaft and is now causing damp in my flat it’s normally an easy fix but the resident to whom the pipe belongs to is an alcoholic and a recluse that refuses to respond to notes, knocking or emails. Is there anything I can do legally please ? The damp will make me very sick and I can not afford to take time off work.
I don't want to create tension therefore am reluctant to go over to have a chat. Is there anything that could be done?
We have gathered substantial evidence against them and continue to do so recently even the kids have been at it and caught on CCTV
What should my next steps be ?

On windy days the said rubbish is flying around the whole car park which is shared with other businesses who are constantly having to pick up said rubbish as the gym won’t accept responsibility for the rubbish.
This issue has been reported before but never improves so what else can be done?
I have a problem with very bad smell coming from the downstairs property that is spreading everywhere in my flat, some days it is very difficult to stay in ta house and sometimes the smell lasts for days. I did discover that the downstairs property are using a comecial steemer but I can't see any extractor fans so I'm assuming that why the smell comes in to my flat, also I discovered that they using my draining sistem to pump out the steam, I get smelly steam coming out from the sinks and bathtub.
Any advice would be much appreciated

Now my Lovely Wife has been violently attacked & robbed by two of these addiction problem tenants in front of our three year old daughter, & the housing body have done absolutely nothing to address any of this. One of the addiction problem tenants has attacked three people in our street now & the housing have done nothing about her behaviour even though she has been taken to court for attacking my wife but she still goes out of her way to cause harassment on a daily basis. Only last night we were kept awake until 3am gone because of her behaviour & one of her drinking buddies.
What has one got to do other than taking the law into ones own hands because nobody is helping me or my family, I feel so deliberately sorry for my Wife & our nearly four year old because they are having to witness all the ASB.
We've had rotten meat put though our letterbox dog feces bags our front scratched up our car vandalized to over £1,000 pounds worth of damage. Our front mat thrown out the back windows water hose pipes put up though our opened windows. My mountain bike damaged tyres & mudguards, bullied by their family members.
My Wife & I are at our wits end now, in not knowing what might happen to us or our home & Barnet Homes are not doing anything about it.
Several other neighbours have raised the same concerns of harassment & racial abuse & nothing is being done to stop their behaviour.
My neighbour has a pond which he is constantly over filling and it keeps leaking under the fence onto our patio area. We have spoken on several occasions and he doesnt see that its a problem as its only water and he is old so forgets!!! The water coming through stinks and leaves green sludge marks. Im basically at the end of my tether with him and i want to put a play area down for my grand daughter but cant do this because of this problem. Any help or advice would be fantastic.

We are all at our wits end . We have written to the neighbours with a reply , it’s what we are doing , tough luck basically . I don’t think for one minute the council will help as they get planning for anything they want . We are really upset by this nuisance and is it is causing huge stress which is affecting our health . What can we do please.
There is this foul smell coming from inside the house that my stomach cannot handle.
They store the produce right where the dogs use the restroom, so I know that this cannot be sanitary.

I have found out after a conversation with my local PCSO that I have a neighbour with learning difficulties. I was given his social workers details, and I have had to have contact with him on a number of occasions.
The man has been advised to stop moving bins, however he now keeps leaving gibberish notes on my property as well as dumping street rubbish into my garden.
I understand that he has special needs, however, what can I do now? I know he is watching my every move, and I live alone and feel harassed and anxious. I don't want to sell my home, but I am coming close.

I have already approached them and they told me that they have had pest control out and they were unable to do anything and they will die eventually blah blah blah although Queen Wasp hibernating and coming back with a larger nest next year wasn't mentioned??
I rang my local council to come to my premises and double check they weren't in my loft, but when i explained that they (wasps) were entering my neighbours house on the opposite side of the house to mine i was assured that I didn't have a wasps nest inside my property. Even so..... I still place 2 Bombs inside my loft hatch and hadn't seen any for a week or so. BUT, today I found 1 dying on my bedroom windowsill and I've recently hoovered a couple up off my bedroom carpet.
My neighbours are fairly new (less than 6 months) and also young (early 20's). I really don't want to be 'that' neighbour who keeps knocking and complaining about things as I think of myself as 'fairly easy going" but..... I'm at my Wits End with this pest issue.

Our bedroom facing the neighbouring building which is a businesses premise. On the ground floor of the premise is a grocery sumpermarket and on the first floor is a workshop. Recently I have noticed that they have installed a rather huge compressor which I believe is for an airconditioning system. Lately there is a humming noise coming from one of the compressors intermittently. I am not sure from which one but the humming noise has become louder even if our windows are closed. The noise now disturbs our evening and my sleep. What shall I do and who should I report this to.
I would love some advice. This year we have seen a massive increase in flies in the house in our village and nearby town so much so that flypapers were sold out on several occasions in our shop. I didn't think anything of this as it has been in the papers about increased flies due to the hot summer. I keep 4 bantam hens in my large garden which are free range in the back garden. I have had them for 3 summers now and flies have never been a problem. I follow advice about cleaning etc and there are no flies in the coop. However this week I have had three visits from my neighbors who wait until,my partner leaves and then banged on my door at 7:15 am and basically the husband gave me a tirade about how all the flies in his house are my chickens fault. I tried to explain that everywhere was having problems and was I to blame for the village and the towns fly problem. Then he said I was being obstructive and if I didn't do anything to solve it he would contact the environmental agency. Since then he and his wife have been round 2 more times always waiting for my partner to leave and writing me a nasty letter. I did my own research and couldn't find anything I was doing wrong but offered to put two fly deterrents up at my own cost. All this has really upset me I feel bullied. If I try to pick holes in their arguments like why haven't they complained for the past two years I just get that they have lived in their house for 27 years and they know that it is my fault. When I go to work I basically don't want to come home again

There are a lot of very bad neighbours around. Very selfish people who consider themselves rather than other people - but the law is there to help. If you are having problems with a bad neighbour, first ask them to stop what they are doing as it is causing you some stress and affects your own life. Make sure you make and keep a diary of all the annoyances they make. Be confident that you are not being unreasonable - that is, why should you suffer because of someone else - If your request fails to do anything - drop the offender a letter, stating that you have asked them to stop and nothing has been done, and that you have no alternative other than to bring a private prosecution. You will find advice on the internet and sample letters to send. Follow that. It is easy, most of these cases, I believe are free.
I keep a clean house and yard and don’t want rats where I live
Last week I had my neighbour knock on my door he told me that he is reporting me to my landlord because my girlfriends brother and myself watch the football at our home.
Week before last it was a big football match on a Saturday and we was 2-0 down and then bounced back up, there was a lot of swearing and cheering extra which you would expect from regular football fans. However apparently the noise is so bad we are waking up kids at 3am which I really can’t see happening unless people live in our walls! We have been here 4 years we got a puppy 2 years ago at first they was complaining about her little barks at night but now she is calm and makes no noise, she is also a Chihuahua so definitely not a dangerous dog. They are a family with 5 children and we hear them constantly. We do not complain! I really can not see what grounds they have to go to environmental health over us! The garden is a bit untidy at the moment but that would be sorted out soon as summer is coming . They have never been inside my house so have no reason to question that! I don’t know where they have a leg to stand on here or was he just trying to scare me? He even said he is contacting my landlord. I’m pretty sure that it would need to be over a cause of time but we have had no problems over the last 4 years apart from the odd yap from the dog, it was just from me watching the football and my sports and the odd swear word and cheering during the day. I can’t see how they do not get any sleep because of us we have not changed anything over the last 4 years so I really don’t know where all of this has come from. Can anyone help?
We have spoken to council and they fitted noise equipment most days 30 to 40 db and 30 to 55 at weekends . And came back to us as it's a lot of noise but not enough to be anti social behaviour.
We have had soundproofingfitted to help but as they grow so does the levels

I live in a four in a block and my neighbors downstairs I’m in the flat on top of them and they are really noisy all the time sometimes all day and I don’t know what to do I have went to housing association and they said they would say to their landlord because they are private tenants but they are still doing it. I live alone and I’m becoming depressed and sad all the time and can’t sleep. Please help
Some context; we share a building they are flat one and we are upstair in flat 2 it is a converted house. We share a garden.
Problem 2 I assume to to the piling up of waste has given us out next issue, rats or rat. We've had the the outside walls checked- there is no access into our flat through holes outside. The only way in is through our own separate front door which is never open for a prolonged period of time. Or the wall cavity which is linked to downstairs. So if they get rats we get rats.
I have thought to write them a letter or knock and mention however I have only ever seen them once since living here and they don't seem very approachable. so far all I know of there existence is arguing and shouting at any time of day.
What do I do please?

I have tried to talk with the neighbour who states that it's possibly just one cat responsible for this problem (I see this impossible cosnidering that we are talking about 10-15 excrements in a week) and that she looks after this cat which is a stray but she is not the owner. She refuses to do anything and didn't look keen to help in anyway not even helping with the cleaning.
I don't know what to do. I have tried spray and several tricks to keep them away with nl result. What would you suggest me to do because I can't tolerate this anymore. She sees me upset and cleaning and completely ignore me. I don't know what autority I should contact to get help.
What can I do about this I’ve already sent a note through her door about loud music at 9.30 when our young kids are in bed I wouldn’t mind but she has a young child herself and let’s her stay up to all hours I can’t survive of five hours sleep!
They let it walk out of their driveway and up and down the pavement on it's own, therefore pooing not only in our driveway but others too and we are all fed up with it.

However, the company that manage the flats keep informing me that the new owners (who caused the damage), are complaining that I am making excessive banging noises (they aren't specific as to what and when). I can only assume it is from my washing machine which, as there are no longer internal walls in their kitchen, now vibrates throughout their flat.
Can I be held responsible for noises that are caused by their own decisions to remove internal walls?
They never asked for any permission or told anyone that the initial building work was happening.

The neighbour is absolutely disgusting, she's been hording rubbish for years-almost 19yrs!! I'm sick of it, I have mice in my house I had them exterminated once before now I'm pregnant I am disgusted I have them again. She has mattresses, bed frames, 4 dustbins and mounds of clothing. I have to view it constantly has they refused to build the wall any higher. There are 6 children over the age of 20 and 2 adults living int he property, they play music, scream, shout and swear so much I just sit and listen as I woman refuses to listen or speak to me. I'm sick of this I seriously can't cope. I caught her putting rubbish in my bin countless times, even opening the front door and asking her what's her problem and why is she doing this. She has started storing household rubbish in her shed. I've taken pictures of this constantly then deleted as my family think I am going to cause problems. I am sitting writing this and even now had to bang the wall because they keep playing music whilst my daughter is asleep. Help!!
My good friend is experiencing an issuing with one of the other tenants in a shared privately rented accommodation, the people are on housing benefits.
He has lived there for nearly a year, at first the place was really quiet and all the other tenets got along.
Then a guy moved in his partner works for the local authority in the benefits department, she is always getting involved and laying the law down, she stays at the premises often she thinks she is superior and in charge of the property.
The guy keeps them a wake all night, with having different people coming round and shouting outside at all hours it is believed that he is dealing in drugs, people are coming and going at all hours. He sleeps all day and complains when the other residents make any noise during the day. He has threatened the other tenants and calls them names, he has broken the lock on another tenants bathroom despite having his own within his room, he filled their bath up with rubbish and empty cans of booze and broken glass.
He has been reported to the landlord on several occasions and the landlord found drugs in another room and flushed them down the toilet, this person is making everyone's lives a misery with lack of sleep and constant noise and behaviour.
they deal with customers at various times through the night last one was 4:30 am car running outside below bedroom window a woman having a conversation in the street with chemist person through the door then he serves her by opening and closing the door making even more noise. this has lots of hour variations anything from 1am - 7am all waking me up most times.
What can we do? If anything> Instead of front gardens we now have multiple car parks in the front of our houses (semi-detatched and terraced make up all of the road on both sides. We have medium sized front car parks and large back gardens which the people running their businesses use for storage and warehouses/sheds, they even have fork-lift trucks ruining our peace and the possibility for our children to play happily in their back gardens. Tyres are piled up over 6th in the back garden next to mine and I fear it's a fire hazard.
Is there anything we should do? Can do, or try to do I have tried politely explaning that they are making our lives a misery by converting their garden and our surroundings into an industrial area but it gets worse day by day hour by hour. As I type a large industrial container TRUCK is parked outside our house blocking the parking areas and road space of 4 houses as they are AGAIN loading up a big truck obviously as part of whatever business they are running from home. Why should we all have to put up with this anti social behaviour and no consideration for neighbours? I wonder can anybody do anything about this situation?
I have an old staffy, he barks some times if there is someone outside the house or if some one is banging and this gets worse when there are fireworks going off. I have medicated him, put a plugin in and left the radio on in the hopes of reducing his anxiety. My neighbour has started to complain as he feels my dog barking intermittently for an hour once a fortnight is to much, my neighbour is in and out of his house and our houses are very close together he chops his wood outside the property which my dog is obviously going to get upset with. I've tried explaining this to him but he seems to expect my dog to be silent, he has even admitted that my dog only barks every now and again and not for long but still he is not happy with this. Do you have any advice? Am I being unreasonable? Is an hour once every now and again excessive?
(1)Regarding the absestos and the rats - it will be more productive to contact environmental health not the HSE. They should be able to make an order for the owner to get the place cleaned up and will be able to liaise with HSE if necessary.
(2)If the cesspit is draining somewhere you feel it shouldn't be (i.e not a sewer) then contact you water company.
(3)The boundary issue is something you'd need to sort out via the courts or an alternative dispute resolution method if it cannot be resolved amicably
(4) Any assaults or threats should be reported to the police.

Until what time is aloud to cook in a shared house as my flatemate is cooking every evening around 10pm to midnight. He is living upstairs and we downstairs, get the rooms filled with foodsmell and making noise as well.
The new owners have encroached my land and demolished items on it, erecting fencing panels dividing me from my land, not on the boundary. I have twice asked them to observe the boundary and not encroach our land. They say there were no arguments even though the CPS gave him a criminal record and fine. I have supplied them with my land title deeds. The building rubbish containing asbestos remains I did report it to the HSE but got no response. Rats remain and the cessp it has been connected to the road rainwater drains and is polluting everyone's land and the local storm drains. Help I've had enough of assaults and threats
They also have 7 cats who dig up our fresh laid turf and toilet on it.. Ther s cat prints all over our car, it's so frustrating,
He also has cameras pointing onto the garden... Front door and has a camera on his shed I don't know where this can see so I have to keep my blinds closed at all times!

Now I have a 3 month old son and his intimidation has got far worse. He actively tries to wake my son up during day, if he makes the smallest amount of noise during night feeds bangs on the ceiling.
I can't speak to him as I tried once at 3am to ask him to turn his music down and he shoved me and told me to f*** off.

We have a wasp nest behind the guttering on the rear of our house. There are a few wasps around the nest but have caused no problems whatsoever. I guess the nest is in the cavity wall as there are none in the loft.

We hear every noise, when they talk, walk, shout and especially when they do diy (which is almost every night) bang bang bang bang constant repetitive and loud, this has went on almost a year now, I'm not sure what they're building in their 2 bed flat but it must be something quite spectacular if you take the time and noise into consideration of the effort they've spent so far.

My neighbours have two dogs, they allow there dogs to dog foul outside my home aswell as in my back garden( dogs jump over fence) and there own garden. My main concern is they don't remove the fouling, it just sits there for days, attracting flies. It's so bad to the point I refuse to hang my clothes in my own garden and can not allow my children to play in the garden nor eat out side due to the wicked stench and many flies. What can I do..

Recently bought a ground floor flat in a victorian conversion. The tenant above us runs their washing machine multiple time a day, typically between 3-5 times. For a single person thats a heck of a lot of laundry. Not judging here...
Anyway the insulation between our flats is terrible, I can hear footsteps as they walk up and down and even hear them murmuring whilst talking on the phone, so you can imagine when they run the washing machine, i can't hear myself think. I've asked them to reduce the spin and not run the machine as infrequent but their response is to leave them in peace. Meanwhile I'm clearly not allowed to enjoy peace and quit myself.
Management agency won't help and I'm not sure what to do, any suggestions?

There are private flats, which have their own bin cupboards, but because ours are closer to them, they continue to use ours. I have informed the Housing Association and the Council, I've lost count how many times in 3 years. Apparently letters have been sent out, but they continue to use our bins. Because they are using our bins, the bins are overflowing constantly. So when the bin men come they won't empty them. So then they get worse and worse. Eventually a private company come and clean them out (at my cost, I forgot to mention)! The bins are now overflowing yet again and have been for the past 7 weeks. Cats and foxs (and i dread to think what else) have pulled the bags apart and rubbish is all over our carpark. Also the amount of flies is ridiculous! Dirty nappies, rotton food, thousands of flies and with the heat, this really can't be hygienic?! That is the bins.
Now for the abandoned cars. Someone had dumped 3 cars in our carpark. The carpark has the facility to have electric gates, but the Housing Association, do not like the idea of us having key fobs to lock it, so the gate remains open. I informed the Council and the Housing Association about these cars being dumped 9 months ago. The Housing Association sent letters to everyone asking about 1 of the cars (even though there is 3)?! Asking for the owner to remove it, that 1 was taken away 2 weeks ago and the other 2 remain there with flat tyres, looks like a salvage yard! If someone sets fire to these cars, with all the rubbish scattered around the carpark aswell, the whole 2 blocks of flats will be set a lite also! As for the Council and the Housing Association, they do not seem to be bothered about these problems. Who else am I left to turn too?

I own 2 cats. my neighbours have been throwing faeces over the brick wall, the proof being that there is some faeces still on the brick wall itself. this has happened a few times, but i've never had evidence of where it came from. Sometimes the faeces are too large to be a cats, so i think they are just using our garden as a tipping ground. As i have small children come to visit, this is very unhygenic, and frankly i'm tired of their inconsideration.
As i said, i have 2 cats. one cat will only use our front garden or the litter box, he wont stray from the household, and the other does her buisness on empty ground around the corner- like clockwork!
I am going to get CCTV, but what other suggestions do you have? This is an example of antisocial behaviour, and is really unhygenic!!!
I have flat kitchen units on my driveway as I have recently refurbished my kitchen. It is an unshared driveway and my household units,cardboard, worktops are not on the street but are neatly piled up inside my drive. There is a fence between my neighbours garden and my driveway therefore it is not in anyone's way and nor is it affecting anybody. It will be removed soon but because of work I am unable to remove it straight away. Can my neighbors complain? Or do they have a right to moan or interfere ?

My downstairs neighbour is in a private let he has rubbish all over the decking and garden... I have also had mice before he moved in and it was the landlord who stayed there at the time he rabbits in the garden so I put it down to that...
I phoned my local council office to be told they couldn't help me and that I would need to write to the landlord kind of easier said than done when i have had to get police involved before

I live in a house. My neighbour keeps putting the bin infront of our property instead of by their door. We have our bin out, as well on out side. So. We keep ours and theirs. Legaly is "inside " their property because is by their window front, however I have asked them to keep it by their door, as we have ours and theirs, and they refuse. It's their property and they can do whatever they want.
Is there anything I can do about it?

Have video ie pipes taken a few months ago, New builder asked them to do it that said a lot of silicone had been used and it was a bad job.
My house is a non smoking house but i moved into it a few months ago and the neighbour downsatairs is a chain smoker.
The smell is terrible, she is up from 5.30 in the morning till 2.30 smoking away, my house, me, my dog, my clothes are stinking of her smoke. I also have asthma and am wheezing, my taste buds are nipping as are my eyes.
What can I do about this, she ignores me when i tried to talk to her? Can I call envviromental health, i feel sick every day now .
His music is never that loud, there is 3 brick walls between his room and the neighbors wall.
They have a religious believes that their children can not play music and be normal kids.

Sometimes, we witness acts of violence on the street outside, involving associated male neighbours and the next-door neighbour's associates. As I write, at 00.26, the volume of sound is very disturbing.
This very evening, we witnessed a violent incident.
We intend communication with the landlord. Thereafter, the police and the environmental department.

There is a shopping trolley on the path in front of our houses, mountains of rubbish/useless bags of what would be ruling however doesn't dispose of it.
Paper rubbish over flowing on to a council owned section of garden in front of their property.
An old car which i believe to be sorn in front of the house all be it in a carpark.
Parking of another vehicle (used regularly) extremely close to a public access way (I would guess in the region on 3feet) which is constant problem to the public and council lorries and yet there is very adequate parking in the car park to the front of the properties off the road.
Due to the parking of the car on the road the public footpath is being blocked to pedestrian access.
What can I do is transport I need to contact for the vehicle?

The owner has failed to answering the door on the occasions I have knocked and in 3 years of living here have only seen them once and that was at 2am when I saw her pottering about. I'm at my wits end.

She needs to do two things - 1. make her garden more attractive to her own cats, ie make a large 'toilet' area of soil, keep it clean and dig it over every week, and 2. to be fair she needs to clean up in your garden at regular intervals.
I have 2 cats and I do both of those things, and I have a good relationship with my neighbours. I call it my fortnightly 'poo patrol'!
Just have a polite chat with your neighbour, and ask her if she could do those two things to begin with and see how it goes. However, I'm afraid no-one can ever 'change a cats behaviour' so you may still have to keep your door/windows closed. Good luck.

Our cats have caught and killed two rats over the last three weeks and I believe our next door neighbour's failure to dispose of rubbish correctly is attracting them.
Can Environmental Health act in this case? I have a newborn baby and a two year old so I am very concerned our neighbours are attracting rats.
I am living on 1st floor and neighbours on ground floor.
Unfortunately, they have sold house and new family moved with dog. New neighbours are allowing to do pooping in the garden. I am really upset as I always had kids in garden and putting my laundry. Now you have to be very careful as you can step on it.
This family is not clearing poo.. I have spoke with them, however they are telling that on their site dog can do whatever he likes. Problems is that dog is doing this on both sides. Today they have told me, that I can not put my laundry on my side as it is covering day light to her kitchen. Crazy !
Please note that it is not really possible to split this garden on half with fence.

Whille you say your neighbours are not approachable, do give this a try before taking the next steps. Ask them if they can re-angle or partially shade the light, fit a lower wattage bulb, or consider fitting a PIR so that it only illuminates when movement is detected. If your neighbour will not consider any of the options you can report this to your environmental health officer.

The access behind our property where we gain access to our garage is very over grown behind other people's properties with bushes and trees. How do I legally go about getting them cut down. I also think some properties have taken their garages into the rear access way making it harder to drive out car up. Who do I contact? What can I do?
We have begun the work and it has been very difficult getting access to our property because we have a shared drive with the neighbour and every time we have a delivery or work carried out they are kicking off about the drive and not being able to get passed even if we ask them if they would like us to move; they will just leave there car in the way and block the access. We had a lady collect or kitchen the other evening the neighbours wife can home from work whilst it was being loaded just left her car in the way and then whole her head at the lady buying the kitchen and stormed in, they had to knock on the door and ask them to move she was shouting abuse from the other room at them!! They have also rang is at work about the dust and parking.... They are just really being unhelpful and I want to know what we can do as it is really getting to us how.
Our every week problem is with a household rubbish which some of our neighbours aren't able to put in bins but leaving them laying on the floor right next to the bins provided. We also have a managing company who posted numerous letters plus signs all around the communal hallways to inform everyone to put their rubbish INSIDE the provided bins but seem people just don't care. It's frustrating for rest of us as we unable to find out who exactly does it and truly needs help. What should we do?
New neighbours (6ish months)
Shouting in the street , swearing . selling drugs . smoking cannabis . rest of street has to keep Windows etc shut .(police are quite frequently around their house but I don't know why ) dog that regularly barks and dumped outside. Dog jumping over 6 foot privacy fence in to surrounding gardens . neighbours climbing fence in to my garden . neighbours climbing fence and just standing on it. leering over whilst talking to neighbour other side of my house , or trying to get attention of people around the corner in the street. cats fouling all over my garden , on my dds toys , hidden In grass so I mow over it(yuk) , digging up flower beds and fouling there , fouling on wellies left outside , urinating In my porch , I put mesh one side and trellis the other the keep cats dogs and people out , it was taken down both sides by neighbors, what can I do about any of this(moving seems to be easiest option to be honest)
Our neighbour stacks wooden pallets in his garden against the wall, which have been getting increasing,y higher. They now exceed the 6ft fence and in places lean against it.
What's our position in terms of this issue, as I'm concerned on 2 levels:-
1. The weight could cause a similar problem as before and damage our retaining wall and fence
2. The height of the pallets above our fence from a H&S perspective, ie if they were to be moved either manually or in bad weather and come over the top of our fence.
what can I do ? if I put a fence up the bushes and overgrowth with push fence down in time and the drains will continue to smell and overflow

I have a stable yard but next door has a barn and land that he keeps 12 or more scrap cars, old wood, building rubble filling every inch of his land plus 8 large store containers. It's making the countryside an eyesore and people who are not associated with the barn looking round or dropping things off in there as well. Is there anything the council can do
It is now starting to smell, I have a dog and she has been going mad in the garden and today I found out why rats.
I know the house is a private rent but I don't know how to contact the landlord, as the rubbish that is being piled up in the garden is now damaging the fence.

I just noticed that they have just added 2 Shetland ponies in the garden and erected a garden canopy as shelter. Surely this is cruel to these animals, one looks very shabby and I hear its not safe to keep these animals in a residential suburban garden.
He's got a dog and constantly chucks the popped balls into my garden, he chucks unwanted food the dog didn't want like cake and stuff into my garden making our lives hell!

The property im living in is wet, damp and mould everywhere and I'm suffering from body pain as a result. My landlord is not doing anything about it. I have stopped paying the rent and asked to fix the damp she hasn't done anything about it instead she took me to court to evict me from the property. The court has given me 14 days to leave the property now. Is there anything that I can do about this?

I have been to environmental services, so they are aware as are. Social services and other local authorities. They have done nothing. So now we are in temp homeless accommodation.
My question is this, all the furniture beds, couches etc are my own I bought them brand new. They are now ruined with damp and mold. Should just leave everything and walk out? Or do I have to take it all with me? It's ruined completely. I also have photographic evidence. I don't want any of it I just want to leave it walk out and start a fresh. Cheers.

I live in a quite road and work from home quite often. My windows face the street and for this reason I get very often disturbed by a neighbor who keeps his cars (he has two) on for about 20 minutes to warm them up...This causes a lot of noise (he parks his cars always under my windows) and pollution (therefore I cannot keep my windows open).I don't know what am I suppose to do, as I talked to him but he still hasn't chance is behavior in any way.

We get on very well with our neighbours and dont really want to start a war but we are at a point where something has to be done.
I have managed to ignore this issue but due to the recent rat infestation in my own premises i have seen fit to seek the assistance of the environmental health organisation as i do not see why i should be in fear of entering my own garden due to my neighbours lack of cleanliness.
The responce i got from the environmental health was one i could not believe. I was advised that after 1 visit i was told they would write to them but due to LACK OF STAFF they would not be able to follow the matter up! WHY AM I KEPT A PRISONER IN MY OWN HOME AND RESTRICTED FROM ENTERING MY OWN GARDEN BECAUSE THE AGENCY DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH STAFF?! I pay taxes so do not expect to be given this as an excuse for lack of service!
I wish to progress my disgust further to a higher force as the environmental health cannot do anything about this. Surely there must be someone who can surely ensure this scruffy individual i am unfortunate to live next door too learns some basic hygene standards!

I understand that this particular type of bush is known for the foul smell emanating from its fallen leaves and that planting it in confined spaces is best avoided other than in accessible areas where it can be trimmed and fallen leaves cleared.
I have tried to get my neighbour to cut down or substantially trim the offending bush, but to no avail. On very few occasions, after I asked him to come over to my side and experience the foul smell for himself he or his handyman wound their way to the rotting leaves and cleared away some but not enough. I have repeatedly asked him to stand in our drive to witness the foul smell which he acknowledged but did nothing.
The smell has been evident to my wife, aged 84 and to me, aged 88 and visitors as well
as passers-by. We cannot open front windows in warm weather. Rather than confront my neighbour's wife - who appears to be the boss - and who refuses to engage a regular gardener, I would like to resolve the problem amicably, but so far it has not been possible.
Should I approach the Council or Environmental Agency? What, if any, are my legal rights?
Also the state of the neighbour's recycling bins is bad: they never squash any cartons or bottles, consequently these items blow around, into my garden, and into the street, under car wheels, and strewn over the pavement. The leak was going into my sons room all down the walls down the ceiling and the electricty.The room which he is sleeping is in very poor damp conditions and is making him ill.Ihave reported this to lambeth council since november and they are ignoring this issue.I also have dampness in my room which has made me cough and ill several times.
I am very concerned about my son sleeping in that condition as he is coughing constanly.Lambeth promised the job would get done by the 17th of march and once done i would get decoration allowance for the rooms.
Please could help resolve this matter and get someone from your team to come and look at the unsutiable room my son is sleeping in.

I have neighbour that has already had the police around on many occasions for multiple things
And it was not even myself that has reported them the noise from them
Is unbearable now and there is the smell of drugs the noise from there

when we have heavy rains, the old sewage tanks fill up and run into my garden, (the council have made a small trench where the water rises from the ground from these tanks and flows into my garden along the trench.
The water may be contaminated with sewerage and could be a health concern .
I could build a wall along the boundry fence to stop this flooding .
the council could redirect this out flow to the opposite way , away from my propery .
We have lived here for seven years , the problem is getting worse, and the council buildings are higher than the natural flood plain and run off is being blocked.

I am covinced it ia because of my neighbours disgustig back yard. Also they have stacks of pallet wood and logs against my side wall. The pile is very large and Im concerned it is a fire risk to me . What can I do?

I live next door to an uninhabited house which has very unkempt garden with weeds growing over our fence in the back.
The front garden has weeds about 2 metres high and the local cats use it as a toilet which doesnt smell pleasant.
It looks terrible and we always have to trim them as they make our property look bad.
What can be done about this?

I am a tenant of a backpacker in auckland city. we often have some evening party with our friends. We do some music and some talks among our friends. Tha manager of the backpacker is insisting us several times saying that this type of party is illegal and this type of music is not allowed. I moved to this area six years ago as a single parent with one child, I am currently being harrassed by my siblings (they have a different father) they are spreading untrue rumours. What is the law..8am till 8pm at night for this type of domestic noise..?
They have bonfires on a regular basis without pre-warning us, the fires are often lit 1ft away from our fence and smoke drifts into our house.
They have regular visitors who are known criminals who have no consideration for the neighbours, parking over driveways, parking on the public green, smoking drugs, swearing loudly.
We are not sure whether their actions warrant complaint to their landlord (local council). We do not want to confront them as we know their friends are criminals and fear reprisals.
